Save Animals: Donate Pet Food

Dasher, abandoned outside a hospital.

At our animal centre in Weaste it has been business as usual throughout the pandemic.

We have been working tirelessly, 7 days a week, looking after record numbers of animals. Sadly, we started to see the impact of COVID as early as September 2020, as pet owners were faced with the difficult decision to relinquish their animals due to financial constraints. The situation has continued, but even more worrying is the trend we have seen over in recent weeks of young animals being abandoned, or given up, because they are no longer wanted. One can’t help but think that they were lockdown pets that have outlived their welcome.

6 ON OUR DOORSTEP

We anticipate many more animals being given up in 2021, as the squeeze on finances continues. In a bid to help we have been supporting local food clubs with pet food to try and keep owners and animals together. We understand the benefit an animal can bring, and at times where we are spending prolonged periods indoors, the comfort and companionship an animal provides is priceless. We are keen to help as best we can and would urge readers to consider supporting their local food clubs and food banks too, because together we can make a difference. Thank you to everyone for their kindness and if you would like to get in touch please email us rspcamcr_salford@btconnect.com. www.rspca-manchesterandsalford.org.uk

Bolton School

Your Community

THE SHOW MUST GO ON! social distancing and Covid-secure protocols.

Despite the pandemic, teachers and children across all age groups at Bolton School have been finding creative ways to continue their learning and enrichment activities. The quick and effective move to remote lessons in the Spring was aided by every pupil over the age of 7 having their own school-issued iPad. Whilst the children of key workers continued to be supervised in school, the majority of pupils enjoyed online and directed learning. Teachers across the campus, from the Infant School all the way through to Sixth Form, were delighted with how pupils responded to home tuition. When pupils returned to the site in September, staff were tasked with finding unique ways to continue with important school traditions while maintaining

Music concerts were delivered virtually, many via the school’s YouTube channel. Junior Boys and Junior Girls filmed their Christmas performances in year group bubbles, while the Senior Boys’ Christmas Festival was presented on Zoom and the Senior Girls’ drive-in Ceremony of Carols allowed parents and pupils to enjoy the occasion from their cars. Dramatic productions also went ahead. Separate casts of Girls’ Division pupils within Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 bubbles recorded three versions of their specially written radio play ‘Parr for the Course’, which dramatised the history of women’s football from pioneer Lily Parr to the modern day. The Boys’ Division held casting calls for their production of ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ on Zoom, rehearsed digitally and in year group bubbles and before turning the Great Hall into a socially distanced set to capture a high-quality film of their festive production.

Rotary in Worsley moves into the Dragons Den Once More! We hope to emerge soon from this ‘Covid Darkness’ and the great uncertainty we have experienced, as evenings become lighter and Spring arrives. During this time Rotary in Worsley has been supporting local causes addressing some of the terrible issues made worse by the pandemic such as disrupted childhood development, Food Poverty, Impaired Mental Well Being, Domestic Violence and Social Isolation. Having to cancel our May 2020 Annual Dragons Den event, we established an online process enabling us to distribute £16,000, raised by our Xmas 2019 Santa Float, to various local causes, many set up rapidly to address the increasing social challenges. In September/October 2020, Covid surged again and it became clear that our traditional Santa Float would be unlikely to happen and fundraising would be curtailed. Seeing Santa on our streets has such a positive effect on children and parents alike, we were keen for something to go ahead. We approached our Business Community for sponsorship and set up a JustGiving page and a text donation facility for residents. We had

8 ON OUR DOORSTEP

an amazing response and raised a fantastic £11,000! With the council’s support, we managed to bring Santa to our streets for 10 nights in the run up to Christmas, in a socially distanced way of course! We are now planning a ‘Virtual Dragon’s Den’ event in April/May this year, hoping to have our usual ‘Dragons’ to redistribute all the monies raised and once again support community causes. Local causes are invited to apply for these funds - email jeffbarnes1945@gmail.com for an application form. Our local Business partners will help shortlist the causes to attend the Zoom based event who will ‘pitch’ for financial support. Thanks again to all our business partners and generous members of the community who have enabled Rotary in Worsley to deliver certainty and support at this time of great uncertainty! Look after your hearing Look after your health hearing well, but that it is because people mumble or talk too quietly; they don’t realise their hearing has slowly deteriorated.” Walkden-based audiology and wax removal practice Hummingbird Hearingcare talks about the importance of your hearing health, hearing loss and what you can do to help it. Spring is always a good time to think about your overall health and wellbeing; your hearing should naturally form part of that. Audiologist Samuel Owen says, “A number of recent studies have established that hearing loss, even when mild, is linked to cognitive decline in older people – simply put, if you leave a hearing loss untreated, you more-than double the risk of developing dementia, as the brain has to redirect more energy to hearing rather than to processing the meaning of what was said, which is the intellectually stimulating part of communication. Hearing loss is often addressed too late, as the onset is slow, and most sufferers believe that it isn’t their fault they aren’t

In light of the results of new medical research, healthcare professionals recommend that people over 50 years old have annual ear health checks in order to monitor, and if required, address any hearing impairment. A free 15-minute hearing health check is a quick and easy way to find out how well you’re hearing. Our hearing expert will check the health of your ears, carry out a simple assessment to see how well you are hearing and give you advice on how you can look after your ears. Call 01829 824245 to book your appointment* and enjoy the peace of mind of knowing that your hearing is being looked after. *A wax removal appointment can be arranged if problematic wax is found at the initial consultation.

You have your eyes tested, teeth checked, blood pressure taken – why not look after your ears too?

A Step Closer to Normality? As we go to print, the NHS has begun the biggest mass vaccination campaign in its history to protect people against Covid-19. So far, nearly 4 million people (and counting) in the UK have received their first vaccination and are about to be rolled out to the over 70’s. In England, some hospitals will operate 24/7 on a trial basis and 10 new mass vaccinations centres have just opened - all in a bid for the NHS to meet its target of offering 15 million people in the UK a dose by 15th February. WHO IS GETTING THE VACCINE FIRST? As expected, the most vulnerable in society are receiving their vaccines first as set out by the Government’s 9 priority groups list. The “majority” of vulnerable people in the UK will be vaccinated throughout January and February. These include: People aged 80 and over People who live or work in care homes Health and Social Care workers at high risk It’s hoped all the priority groups will be vaccinated, possibly by May. The next phase will focus on the rest of the population over 18 years, who are much less likely to be ill with Covid-19. WHEN WILL MY VACCINE TAKE PLACE? When it’s your turn, you will be invited by letter or by phone to book an appointment. If you are registered with a GP in Salford, you will be called by a staff member from a member of the local COVID-19 vaccination team. If you live in Salford but are registered with a practice outside the borough, you will be contacted by representatives from that local authority area. The caller will identify themselves and say they are calling on behalf of the NHS in Salford and they are getting in touch about booking an appointment for a COVID-19 vaccine The caller will then offer dates and times for you to attend clinic. They will also give the location of the site where you will receive it. This will not be your usual surgery. Both the Pfizer and the Oxford Astra Zeneca vaccines are being used in Salford. Both require two doses so it’s vital you return for your second appointment when invited. [Source: www.salfordccg.nhs.uk/live-well/covid-19-vaccine]

DON’T CALL THEM, THEY WILL CALL YOU Please be patient and wait to be contacted by the vaccination team. Avoid calling your GP - your turn will come. Local surgeries are inundated with calls from patients wanting to know what to do. They are politely asking people not to contact them for vaccination appointments - they will contact you. By now, most of us will know someone who has suffered, or sadly passed away, from Covid-19 complications. Others are losing jobs, businesses are closing - some for good, and a whole generation is being delivered a far from ideal standard of education. Disturbing numbers (of all ages) are suffering with mental health issues. ..the list goes on. The only way out of lockdown it would seem is to follow the sensible advice to control the spread by adhering to the rules and getting vaccinated at the earliest opportunity. We all need to play our part.

The 9 Priority Groups: 1. Residents in a care home for older adults and their carers. 2. All those 80 years of age and over and frontline health and social care workers. 3. All those 75 years of age and over. 4. All those 70 years of age and over Clinically extremely vulnerable individuals. 5. All those 65 years of age and over 6. All individuals aged 16 to 64 years with underlying health conditions, which put them at higher risk of serious disease and mortality. 7. All those 60 years of age and over. 8. All those 55 years of age and over. 9. All those 50 years of age and over It is estimated that together, these groups represent around 99% of preventable mortality from COVID-19. ON OUR DOORSTEP 15

Health & Wellbeing

Why GETTING OUTSIDE every day is one of the best things you can do for yourself right now Here we are in 2021 and in lockdown again. This time it’s winter - dark, wet and cold. But, if there’s one ‘non-food’ thing we can do to improve our wellbeing it’s getting outside every day...

Better Physical Health When we're stuck at home it can be difficult to get enough physical activity, especially when most activities are taking place on screens. We should be getting at least 150 minutes per week of moderate physical activity to maintain cardiovascular health. Recent research is showing that it’s more like 300+ minutes if your goal is weight loss. Direct exposure of your skin to sunlight is one of the best ways for you to get Vitamin D. It has an important role in boosting your immune system necessary in winter, and even more so this year.

this is social health. Current rules in England allow individuals to meet one person from another household for outdoor exercise daily. Use this to meet a friend for a socially distanced walk outdoors. Or take your phone on your walk and chat with a friend. Getting outside every day, even if only for a few minutes, will only help us get through this phase. Happy walking!

Written by Karen Hartshorn, Nutrition & Health Coach www.tarragonnutrition.com

Worsley Footcare

A brisk walk outside counts as moderate exercise, so why not to fit in a 30 minute walk outside every day to increase your activity levels? Especially if the sun is shining!

Better Mental Health Mental health professionals, charities and teachers are talking about the effects of repeated lockdowns and the pandemic on our mental health. It’s really important to do what we can to look after our mental wellbeing. Research is showing that being in nature is one of the best things you can do to improve your mental health. It helps to relieve stress and improves your mood. It can even help alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Mobile Chiropodist - Podiatrist BSc (Hons) MCPod

Spending time in nature is a fantastic aim for each day - the woods or a park if you're near them. If not, install pot plants on a balcony or driveway.

DIVORCE REFORMS

Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Bill 2020 What are the changes to the divorce laws? In Autumn 2021 the law relating to divorce will change. The current law (introduced in 1973) allows divorce if a marriage has irretrievably broken down due to one of five facts including adultery, unreasonable behaviour and desertion. For a long time, it has been thought that by encouraging people to blame the other party added to the feelings of animosity that can often by generated through marital breakdown. The change provides for one party to file a notice of intention to divorce at court and for a conditional order (decree nisi) for divorce to be granted at least 20 weeks later. The minimum six-week period between the conditional order and the final order (decree absolute) is retained. Most family lawyers feel that with the problems caused by the corona virus pandemic for the court system the changes will not take effect in 2021 but the new law has been enacted and the changes will be introduced.

Will it be easier? In theory, yes. Family lawyers have concerns as to whether (given the problems the courts have faced with COVID-19) the necessary processes and IT systems will be in place but, ultimately, the new law should be simpler to apply.

What about financial remedies? They have not changed. The courts will have the same powers to deal with maintenance, capital, and pensions and the same principles of sharing and meeting needs will apply. If you need advice, contact us:

A PROUD SALFORD BUSINESS S&S Marquees was started by friends Mike and Roy in 2008, initially supplying gazebos to community run events in the city. As our range of equipment expanded to marquees, event furniture, sound systems and generators, our client base now includes several Greater Manchester local authorities, schools, charities, BBC Blue Peter and MediaCityUK. The range of events we cater for has grown, but community run events are still at the heart of the business. We are fully insured and provide full risk assessments for each event, including Covid safe working when installing equipment during the current climate. Free site visits to

Top Six Things to Consider When Designing Your Bathroom Designing your new bathroom isn’t just about the obvious stuff, such as the colour of the bathroom suite. Here are 6 key elements you need to consider to help you to create the perfect bathroom design. 1. Space Fully utilise your available space. Even with limited room, make the most of the space you have; this is where good design is essential. Positioning is important – where will your fixtures go, and how much leeway is there to move them and once fitted, can you still move around the bathroom comfortably? Also, consider storage and how much you actually need, often ‘less is more’! There are plenty of inventive ways to maximise your bathroom storage whilst not taking up too much space, can you build storage into cavities in the wall for example? 2. Size It’s essential to get the balance right between good use of the space available and the design of the room. A good balance between design and functionality is the key to creating a room that will see the test of time. Always design with function in mind. 3. Light Your bathroom lighting shouldn’t be an afterthought. It’s hugely important in bathroom design and is one of the golden three things you should pay attention to. These are Lights, Tiles and Mirrors. Get one of these wrong and you will not get the most from the bathroom. You don’t have to settle for just one type of lighting. Other than the functional ‘spotlights’, consider more subtle mood lighting to enhance your bathroom as a place to relax in.

4. coLour Colour is one of the key decisions you will have to make and the choice can be daunting. Do you want to go bright and airy or do you fancy dark and moody? Also, when choosing your colour and finishes, consider the amount of natural light available and how you can best use this. With good design, you can even make a darker bathroom into a design statement which you will be proud of. The key to bathroom colour design is Tiles. Bathroom tiles are versatile and come in a broad range of finishes, sizes and colours. Chosen correctly, it is the tiles that will add that extra wow factor to your bathroom space. 5. Budget A great looking bathroom doesn’t have to cost the earth. The important thing is to make your budget work for you and to spend it wisely. An appropriate budget is essential to start your project off but making sure you don’t use it inappropriately is essential! You’d be surprised at what an experienced, innovative bathroom designer can achieve to help with this. 6. Who WiLL deSign Your Bathroom? Choosing a bathroom designer should perhaps be top of the list. You must feel confident that they are acting in your best interests, offering design solutions to fit the space and size of your bathroom and are happy to work within your budget and timescale. Most importantly, you should have good rapport with them; they should be approachable and trustworthy, making the process as stress free as possible. Alfred Fraser Bathrooms & Tiles are your local trusted bathroom design and installation specialists, providing an end-to-end bespoke design and installation service to give you the bathroom of your dreams.

PLOTTING YOUR WAY THROUGH LOCKDOWN by Geoff Hamilton, Macmillan Cancer Support Volunteer The pandemic has caused many people to look at how they spend their leisure time and to think about health, wellbeing and isolation. Growing your own crops from seed provides exercise; consideration of what to grow and where to grow it; there may also be the need to seek advice from someone you know or from the internet - it all takes interaction of some kind. Watching a new shoot appear and grow is fascinating; it’s a new adventure every time and nurturing your produce occupies your time, imagination and satisfaction is almost guaranteed. This phenomenon has produced a huge increase in the number of applications for allotments. The waiting lists for sites across the City are being re-written and updated. Don Booth, chairman of the Salford Allotment Federation (SAF) has been liaising with the Council to maximise the existing provision and establish new sites to increase the plots available. Several sites are under consideration/negotiation: Blackleach, Walkden: Plotholders here are considering making a ‘self-management agreement’ with the City Council so that the site can be extensively refurbished and more plots can be provided. Weaste, Salford: Council-owned land has been identified, near the M602, where several raised beds could be established. Finance is being sought 26 ON OUR DOORSTEP

before work can commence. Hilton Lane, Walkden: 15 new half plots are to be provided by Bellway as part of their development adjacent to the former Burgess Farm. Work has been delayed because of the pandemic but will go ahead as soon as practical. Anchor Lane, Little Hulton: It is hoped that some of the former Brackley Golf Course land can be secured to establish a new allotment site. Negotiations are at an early stage but, the City Council is fully behind the scheme. Pendleton: Discussions are underway to establish some new plots, close to ‘shopping city’ as apart of the redevelopment of the centre. Beechfield, Swinton: The Bellway development, on the former Swinton sewage farm, is progressing and discussions about the method and type of allotment provision is underway. The pandemic is slowing the progress of opening up the site so it may still be some time before we see action on site. A philanthropic sponsor has suggested monies could be made available to establish allotments on derelict/under-utilised sites in the North West. Don Booth has had some preliminary discussions with the National Allotment Society to see if any extra plots could be achieved - it’s early days but we live in hope and will keep updating on any progress. Former school sites, several redundant schools, have been identified for demolition. If any land should become available for community or allotment use then it is hoped that negotiations for additional plots can be held. WWW.ONOURDOORSTEP.CO.UK

Ready, steady census! Census 2021 will provide a snapshot of modern society Households across Salford will soon be asked to take part in Census 2021. The census is a once-in-a-decade survey that gives us the most accurate estimate of all the people and households in England and Wales. It’s been carried out every decade since 1801, with the exception of 1941. “What a lot of people probably don't realise is that census data is used in the planning of all sorts of services, from schools and hospitals, to doctors surgeries, transport and business,” says Alison Gilbody, Census Engagement Manager for Salford. “The information people provide on their questionnaires on the 21st of March will be used to make major decisions and inform future investment over the next 10 years”. “Census 2021 will highlight areas of deprivation, show the ethnic make-up of the country, provide information on our living arrangements, health, education and the jobs we do and the data from it will help inform policy at a local and national level for years to come. It will also provide us with important insights into the impact of the pandemic on our society.” This is the first time that the census will run primarily online, making it easy for most people to complete the questionnaire on any device – whether that be a computer, mobile phone or tablet. Households across the country will receive letters with online codes allowing them to take part from early March. Paper questionnaires will also be available for people who may need further help and support to complete the survey. Census day is on March 21, but households across the country will receive letters with online codes allowing them to take part from early March. Local Census support centres will be offering help. While census results will be available the following year, all personal records will be locked away for 100 years and kept safe for future generations. 28 ON OUR DOORSTEP

CHANGING LIVES @ CARRINGTON Changing Lives @ Carrington was set up to help meets the needs of disengaged young people, to change their lives through the development of key life skills, and engage them back into society through caring and working with animals. During the pandemic, our focus changed a little and we set up an Animal Rescue Centre to help animals that are in need of a loving home. Since August 2020, we have received over 100 cats, rabbits and guinea pigs that are in desperate need of help. Most of these animals have been rescued from people who are unable to look after their beloved pets due to loss of income, illness or death caused by the current pandemic. We have not refused a single animal despite their poor health, ailments and in some cases, injuries. No expense has been spared to bring these animals back to good health and subsequently

find loving 5 star homes for most of them. Although we are very lucky to have very dedicated volunteers that help us care for these animals, we still need funds to feed and maintain them as well as vet services required for re-homing purposes such as neutering, chipping, flea & worming and vaccinations. The costs for this alone is in excess of £110 per animal plus any costs required for ailments/injuries. The latest lockdown has prevented us from being able to fund raise so we are now in urgent need of help. If you can help, donations can be made by Paypal: paypal.me/changinglivesanimals, or our Amazon wishlist. Please get in touch for details: Nicole: 07507 404006 Email: changinglivesatcarrington@mail.com www.changinglivesatcarrington.uk

FOOD FOR FORK FEEDING OUR HOMELESS

I’m Danielle Denton, a local mum in the M44 area, and I’ve set up this local group to help our local homeless. Set up with fellow volunteer Daniel Murray, we have both worked with with the homeless before but wanted to do more. In a week we pulled together a small team which started outreach on 22nd January. We set up from scratch and have been very busy collecting food, clothes and essentials. The response has been amazing from our local community, but we have a long way to go to achieving our goal to have enough volunteers, food donations and help to feed the homeless 7 nights a week. To find out more, please join our group on Facebook Food for FORK. 32 ON OUR DOORSTEP

Makants Greyhound Rescue NW, in Tyldesley, was formed by Siobhan Hoppley in December 2013. With the help of a team of volunteers the rescue have successfully homed over 450 ex racing greyhounds in loving forever homes since this date. Last year the charity had to readjust due to the Coronavirus pandemic but, with volunteers help, still managed to fundraise and find homes for 80 greyhounds. Whilst greyhound homings are currently restricted we’d love to have your online support. Follow us on social media and at www.makants.uk
