Invitation to “The Dining Rooms” Sean Kelly, Executive Head Chef at Worsley Park, A Marriott Hotel & Country Club, is this year making it his mission to bring the local community into the hotel. “The challenge with a hotel restaurant is that many local residents see it as either too expensive or too business oriented, but what we want to tell the people of Worsley and the wider surrounding areas is that The Dining Rooms is a Restaurant within a hotel as much as a Hotel restaurant.” With an 11-year career with Marriott Hotels, Sean began at the Preston Marriott (formerly the Broughton Park Hotel) in 1999. From there he took up the position of Executive Head Chef at the Liverpool Marriott City Centre where he spent 18 months. In 2004 he moved to the prestigious Hollins Hall Hotel & Country Club in Shipley, Yorkshire before making the trip across the Pennines to take the reins at Worsley Park and position of Executive Chef in late 2005. AWARD WINNING FOOD AT WORSLEY Since 2005 the hotel has achieved great culinary successes in both Marriott International Awards and the local area, gaining many awards and recognition along the way. Amongst the highlights include:l l

l

AA Rosette status 2008 Manchester Large Hotel of the Year followed by Northwest Large Hotel of the Year 2009 Marriott Food & Beverage Excellence award with the Best Overall Food Quality in Europe

6 ON OUR DOORSTEP

How have Sean and the team at Worsley Park achieved this? “The focus from the start has been to promote the best locally sourced ingredients within the menus and present them with creative flair. The restaurant concept was then modernised to reflect the extensive hotel refurbishment in 2008 and this led to the name change The Dining Rooms at Worsley Park. This represents the versatility of the physical shape the restaurant can take plus the contemporary dining experience we offer.” OFFERS TO TEMPT As Sean mentioned earlier The Dining Rooms at Worsley Park is keen to engage the local community and offers great value promotions such as:l

l

Wine & Dine for £49, which includes 3 courses from the provenance to plate menu and a bottle of wine for two people! The ever popular Sunday Carvery - at 4 courses, a feast fit for a king (£18.95).

The Chinese calendar is a yearly one, based on the cycles of the moon. Hence it is referred to as the “Chinese Lunar Calendar”. It is the longest chronological record in history, dating from 2600BC. Because of this cyclical dating, the beginning of the year can fall anywhere between late January and the middle of February. A complete cycle takes 60 years and is made up of five cycles of 12 years each. The Chinese Lunar Calendar names each of the twelve years after an animal. Legend has it that the Lord Buddha summoned all the animals to come to him before he departed from earth. Only twelve came to bid him farewell and as a reward he named a year after each one in the order they arrived. The Chinese believe the animal ruling the year in which a person is born has a profound influence on personality, saying: "This is the animal that hides in your heart." Chinese New Year, or Spring Festival, is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. The festival begins with the New Moon on the first day of the New Year and ends on the full moon 15 days later; this day is called Lantern Festival. Specific traditions are followed throughout these 15 days. Generally, it’s a time to pray to the Gods and ancestors for good fortune and health, visit family and eat. Elders give children “lucky money” gifts in red envelopes. The tradition I like most is on New Years Day - no one cleans! Cleaning on New Year's Day is serious bad luck, you might sweep all the good fortune out. However you do have to clean the whole house before New Years day.

Tigers are said to be bold and adventurous, bestowed with initiative and charm. Tigers are friendly, loving and kind but can also be selfish, short tempered and intolerant. The Tiger flourishes by power and attention - a natural leader, ambitious and strives to climb the ladder of success. However, they have a tendency to be risk takers, making them act before they think about the consequences.

The Chinese Zodiac These are the twelve animals of Lunar Calendar. What year were you born in and what does it say about you ? Rats - Courageous & enterprising. Imaginative, charming and very generous to those they love, but do have a tendency to be quick-tempered and over-critical. Ox - Tolerant person with strong character. Born leaders, inspiring confidence in everyone they come into contact with. However, can be too demanding. Rabbits - Affectionate, co-operative & pleasant with lots of friends. Private individuals who prefer to be part of a gang as opposed to leading it. Dragons - Popular, always full of life & enthusiasm with a reputation for being fun-loving. The Oriental Dragon is a divine creature and people born in this year are honoured & respected. Snake - Romantic, deep-thinking, wise & charming. Although they tend to dismiss others too quickly and are a bit stingy with money! The snake is keen, cunning & places high value on material wealth. Horse - Exciting, extrovert & the life of any party he attends. Energetic, amazingly hard working & very independent. Although intelligent & friendly, can sometimes be a bit selfish. Sheep - Quiet & calm. Charming, elegant & artistic people, who like material comforts. Easy going & relaxed but also a bit of a worrier with a tendency to complain about things. Monkey - Very intelligent, well-liked by everyone and will have success in any chosen field. Curious & clever people who catch on quickly to most anything. Lucky old you! Rooster - Flamboyant personality, feisty & obstinate. Trustworthy, hard-working and decisive. Roosters are not afraid to speak their minds and can therefore sometimes come across as boastful. Dogs - Giving & compassionate. Honest, faithful & supportive to those they love but they tend to worry too much and find fault with others. Pig - Fun & enlightening personality blessed with patience & understanding. Honest & thoughtful, they make good friends but tend to expect the same from everyone else. More often than not they end up disappointed. ON OUR DOORSTEP 9

Worsley History

Roman Walls and Catacombs?

Things you didn’t know about Worsley and a fond trip down memory lane

One of Worsley's lesser-known historical

curiosities is an enigmatic ruin, opposite Granary Lane on Barton Road. Now flanked by the new housing estate of Stable Fold and the block of offices which stand on what was the "Walsh's" steelworks site, this ruin (believed to be the 18th century Granary) was the "Roman Wall" of my youth, back in 1950. Built of mighty red sandstone blocks [probably quarried in The Delph], with walls up to 5 metres high, this collapsed square surmounted by mature trees became whatever the imagination of 10 year olds desired. We merely inherited the name, someone long ago decided it was the Roman Wall, and so it remained.

To us it was Colditz, the Alamo or Camelot. It was any castle that needed assailing or defending. We leapt from its walls as paratroopers and explored its strange arches, full of rubble, for hidden treasure.

Walsh's, the steel workshop to its left (now

offices), was our "Armoury", for its refuse tip was full of steel rods which became swords and spears. With a dustbin lid added to the ensemble we became King Arthur's knights. Health and Safety Inspectors of today may shudder, but none of us ever came to harm for all our swashbuckling.

The Walsh Yard held another great treasure, much in demand at our respective schools "Canebreak". Canebreak is mica, a crumbly mineral used in one of Walsh's metal 10 ON OUR DOORSTEP

processes. For schoolboys it had a much more potent value. It was reputed to nullify pain inflicted as punishment with a cane! Rubbed on the hands it not only had this welcome attribute, it also shattered the offending cane and rendered all such instruments of torture useless.

The Roman Wall is not merely an

impressive structure above ground, it also has an underworld of mystery. No sooner has Worsley Brook briefly emerged into daylight from its subterranean passage under Mill Brow, the Green and the Canal than it plunges into a maze of galleries beneath the old Walsh site and the Roman Wall itself.

Brave indeed was the child who ventured into this dark and echoing place by following the bed of the Brook. Most surprising is that these tunnels lie below the level of the bed of the Bridgewater Canal itself, just a few yards away ! What may have been the purpose of these galleries, whether for flood control or storage, perhaps one of our readers may say.

The "Roman Wall" and its underworld exists to the present day. Thanks to the developer of the adjacent housing, it has even been repaired. It merits some form of plaque relating its history and also inclusion on history walks. The underworld is also intact, but can only be accessed via the stream bed. Written by John Kirwin

Why everyone should strength train Karen Pheasant, owner of Ladies Workout Express, explains how strength training can provide significant functional benefits and improvement in overall health and well-being. Are you female? Or a male over 40? Then the chances are that when you think about exercise you picture a treadmill or a brisk walk. Mention strength training and a vision of Arnie Schwarzenegger or a female fitness model will almost certainly spring to mind. This preconception isn't helped by the attitude of the guys in the weights room at your local gym, which will at best be curious and at worst, outright hostile. The popular concept of exercise for women, and for anyone who wants to lose weight, is to spend hours a week doing cardiovascular training in serried ranks at the gym. Unfortunately, this means that the people who would benefit most from strength training either don't understand how much they could gain from it, or are put off doing it. SO WHY SHOULD EVERYONE STRENGTH TRAIN? Our muscles are vital for body structure and movement, to enable us to complete everyday tasks. Anyone who has broken a limb will appreciate how quickly muscles waste away when not being used. But natural muscle wastage starts to take place around the age of 35. Each year the amount of muscle will reduce, until in later life walking up stairs, shopping and even dressing may become impossible.

The good news is that this process can be halted and even reversed through strength training. Bone density, flexibility and balance will also benefit markedly. HOW IT CAN HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT Strength training also plays a role in weight loss. Muscle is an active tissue that burns calories, even at rest. By increasing muscle mass you will elevate your metabolic rate and speed weight loss. Plus you will look more toned and less flabby as the weight comes off. Ladies needn't worry about becoming muscle-bound, since this would require high levels of testosterone, long sessions lifting very heavy weights and following a very specialised diet. Think instead of Michelle Obama's beautifully toned arms! So next time you go to the gym, ask to be given a programme that includes at least 50% weight training. You'll enjoy the variety that it adds to your workout and soon notice an improvement in your strength and energy levels. After that you will never look back! Karen Pheasant owns Ladies Workout Express on the Swinton/Worsley border

Meet Andi Jones... a local celebrity in the athletic arena.

He is one of the UK’s leading distance runners. Born Oct 1978 in Manchester, Andi specialises in road, cross country and mountain running, competes for Salford Harriers and has also represented England and Great Britain. Andi in the Birmingham Half Marathon 2008 (1st)

Many of the team at “athlete matters” are runners. Clinic Director, Duncan Mason, has over 20 years experience as a Physiotherapist specialising in running injuries. He has competed in the Elite field at the London marathon three times with a best time of 2hrs 21mins. He is involved with coaching young athletes at Salford Mets AC and currently works with some of Britain's top Endurance runners, including Britain's top finisher at the London Marathon 2009, Andi Jones......

At what age did you start running and how did your running career progress? I started running at 18 years old by wanting to run the London Marathon. This came from watching the marathon every April on the TV and a thought of “I can do that'. I entered my first London Marathon (1996) with the aim of breaking 4 hours. I did no training for it, headed off to London, finished in 3hrs 58mins - so objective met. From then I kind of got the running bug and was already looking for my next race on the way home from London! Next came two Leeds marathons, the Manchester Marathon, two more London Marathons and I also participated in the Tour of Tameside - a six stage, seven day race. Following this I got involved with East Cheshire Harriers and competed for them for a number of years on Road, Cross Country (XC) and Fells. 26 ON OUR DOORSTEP

Around nine years ago I changed club and coaches and joined Bob Merrell at Salford Harriers. I was looking for a greater level of competition and guidance and found this at Salford Harriers. Gradually training, times started to fall and I started winning races in good times. I picked up a few England vests for the XC and Mountain running. In 2003 I finished 4th at the World Mountain Running Championships in Alaska, USA. I have ran at numerous European Mountain Running Championships and in 2009 the World Half Marathon Championships, Birmingham. What are your future ambitions in the sport? It’s good to have ambitions and targets. I hope to run a fast time at the Virgin London Marathon (2010) and get selected for either the European Marathon Championships in Barcelona (July), or the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi (Oct).

Left: 4.5k Worsley run Sept 2009 (1st) Above: London Marathon 2009 (13th)

I want to continue to chip away at my marathon time and run a time which I know I am capable of. I also hope to encourage more people to get involved with sport and athletics and put something back into the sport and repay what it has given me. What training advice would you give to someone wanting to take up running? Running is the best sport for anyone to get involved in. With a pair of relatively good shoes it's basically free! No gym membership needed, you can just leave your front door and run. If you want to get more serious or are looking for the great social side of running too, there are always local clubs to join who will welcome people of any standard. Don't think you need to be the next Radcliffe to join a running club:l Find a club which does the type of running you like, whether that be road, XC, fell running or track racing. There are plenty out there. l Build up steadily. Don't go from no running to big miles - you will be injured in no time. l Follow a carefully constructed training programme. l Regular physio will also help ensure you stay injury free and that you can get the

best from yourself. You service your cars so it's only right to service your body on a regular basis. What are some of your favourite races? Favourite races - London Marathon. Any marathon really, but the atmosphere when running the London Marathon cannot be matched anywhere else. Racing around the streets of the capital, being the first British athlete and having thousands of people cheering you on is awesome. Also, any race where I am representing England or Great Britain. When you compete you give 100%, but I always feel that added pressure when wearing the country’s vest to perform even better. Lastly, I favour any race in the Lake District as the place is beautiful. Interview by Jackie Mason athlete matters & Worsley Physio Clinic

14th March 2010 Don’t forget to organise something special for your mum this Mother’s Day. I’ve been a mum for 4 years but I forget that it’s a day for me too. I still think of it in terms about what to do for my mum, and reminding my husband to do something for his! So what would be my ideal Mother’s Day, or treat? It may give you some ideas for your mum, or wife, although there are plenty of websites to help you with that too. From the simplest to the more extravagant... 1) Not having to get out of bed until at least 9am! 2) A day of no chores; no cooking, washing or ironing; not having to get the children ready..... a total day of rest, not even thinking, just being looked after. 3) Getting cute handmade cards from my children. 4) Going out for lunch - somewhere family friendly where the kids can run around. Dunham Massey is always a good place for that. 5) Some pampering ie. a full body massage and/or a facial to revive my tired sleep-deprived skin. 6) Being whisked away for dinner and staying in a 5 star hotel for a night 7) A weekend luxury P&O mini-cruise ! So what will happen this year......we can only wait and see!

Mother's Day is the contemporary version of the original name ‘Mothering Sunday’. The occasion has a long history, which dates back to the 17th century when the poor used to send their children to work as domestic servants or trainees in the homes of higher class people. Once in a year, these children were given leave for a day so that they could visit their Mother Church as well as their own mother. This holiday became know as “Mothering Sunday”.
