5-4-3-2-1 Countdown to Roe Green Paul Jones, from Manfred Mann, and wife Fiona Hendley, visit Roe Green Church, 5th July 2011 For those who lived through the Golden Age of pop the name Manfred Mann brings back memories of Do Wah Diddy, Pretty Flamingo and 5 4 3 2 1. On July 5th this year, at Roe Green Church, Paul Jones and his wife, Fiona Hendley, will bring back memories of those years. Paul's distinguished career includes being the award-winning lead singer of Manfred Mann and the Blues Band – he has recently worked on new albums with both groups. His collection of gold discs includes one for the original Evita. Millions listen to him on Radio 2, Jazz FM and elsewhere, and on TV he has hosted talk shows and done everything from Shakespeare to soaps.

His extensive stage credits range from the Royal National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company to the West End and Broadway. Fiona, an accomplished actress and singer, has worked in all areas of show business, from her acclaimed TV series Widows (for which she won Personality of the Year award) to leading roles at the Royal National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company. Fiona has starred in many West End productions, including the highly-praised and award-winning musical City of Angels. She has sung on many show recordings, and has a collection of gold discs which rivals Paul's! As well as singing they will speak about their experiences of Jesus Christ. Admission is free but by ticket only and there will be an offering taken for the work of Manchester City Mission among the homeless. Tickets can be obtained from Ian Shaw 07731 883869.

Worsley Methodist Church to Close Worsley Methodist Church on Barton Road is set to close this autumn. The final service to be held will be the Harvest on Sunday, 2nd October, 2011. The church is the oldest Methodist Church in the area. The Society was formed in 1784 with the church being built in 1801. The decision was taken earlier this year to close completely after a detailed survey of the buildings revealed extensive works were required to rectify defects in the church and school room buildings. Finances required to carry out the immediate works and maintain the buildings in the future proved too great. Other factors involved Health and Safety issues, plus the lack of new younger members attending. The Church cherishes their community links, which are currently thriving. The Methodist Church runs regular activities such as Tea Dances and Indoor Kurling. These will continue until the closure, as long as they are supported. Once again, the Methodist Church will play a major role in the Worsley Festival this July.

Eccles Community Art Gallery - a showcase for local artists

Eccles Community Art Gallery is a “not-for-personal-profit” organisation run by volunteers (often the exhibiting artists themselves), which aims to make original artworks accessible to all, in the environment of a shopping centre. It showcases the often exceptional work of local artists in a wide variety of media; watercolours, oils, acryllics, pastels and charcoal. Craft workers also exhibit at the Gallery, with textiles, wood items, hand-crafted candles and cards. There are also photographic exhibitions from time to time. Man with Trombone: John Kirwin

The idea of the Gallery was conceived by Karen Illingworth, herself a talented artist, and supported by Threadneedle Properties, owners of the Eccles Shopping Mall. Situated on Boothway, one of the entrances to the pedestrianised Mall and directly opposite Eccles Bus Interchange, the Gallery is well served by car (ample space in the Mall’s multi-storey car park), bus from Worsley, and tram. Open on Saturdays only, from 10am to 4pm the Gallery welcomes all - come and chat to the artists! canal scene in winter is by Ged Buckley

EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT TO HELP YOUR CHILD REACH THEIR POTENTIAL Is your child aged 6-16? Do you want him or her to do better at school? Has he/she got important exams to pass such as GCSE maths and English or entrance exams?

My name is Samantha and I run the Kip McGrath Education Centre based in Walkden. Over the past seven years my staff and I have helped children from local schools in and around Worsley, Walkden, Boothstown and Ellenbrook with maths, English and exams for GCSE, 11+ and Independent Schools. Entrance Exams This year we have had another 100% pass rate for children sitting entrance exams to Bolton and Bridgewater. Year 11 Exams We had a mass rush this academic year from Y11’s looking for extra tuition to secure A-C grades in maths and English and we are optimistic that we will have more fantastic results to publish on our Face Book page and website when results are announced August 25th! The Basics We can help children that are struggling to get to grips with the basics in: Reading, Writing and Spelling Mental Maths, Number Skills and Problem Solving

“Encourages you to be the best pupil you are”, Eleanor, aged 12, with Kip McGrath 4yrs

What our Parents say... “I have 3 children at Kip McGrath. My son Jordon has been attending for 5 yrs. He began in Yr1, barely able to write his own name. Jordon has Autism. The small group intensive sessions benefit him massively. He is currently in Yr7 and is now within the top band of his year and exceeding his targets. Considering we were told he could not attend mainstream secondary school, this is quite and achievement!” What our Students say... “I like coming to Kip McGrath because the lessons are always fun and it helps me in school” - Natasha, aged 7

Educational Support & Exam Preparation We support students in Y9, Y10 and Y11 prepare for their maths and English modules or final exams by going through exam papers and how to pick up extra marks.

“Tuition has helped me go from a D to B in my maths GCSE” - Martin, aged 16

All our teachers are fully qualified, experienced and up to date with curriculum changes and we can offer support to children sitting the new maths and English GCSE’s.

New 6 week courses in:Creative Writing or Mental Maths Aimed at Year 4 and 5 pupils

If you would like to have an informal chat, look around the centre or book your son/daughter or grandchild in for a FREE ASSESSMENT and CONSULTATION, call and ask to speak to Samantha or register on our website.

4 week Beach Body Plan

by Karen Pheasant, owner of Ladies Workout Express

With thoughts now turning to summer holidays, here’s a 4-week plan to feeling energised and full of confidence. Each week of the plan introduces changes to both diet and exercise and is designed to build on the previous week. WEEK 1

Replace any fried foods with grilled, baked or steamed. Limit chocolate, cakes and biscuits to 2 small portions a week. Eat 3 meals a day and don’t skip breakfast. Aim to do 20 mins of cardiovascular exercise (walking, jogging, cycling, swimming) on 3 days at a pace you are comfortable with. Identify ways to incorporate more exercise into your day: take the stairs, get off the bus a stop earlier, walk to the shops, park at the far end of the car park - then do it every day. WEEK 2

Add 2-3 small healthy snacks a day – a piece of fruit, a small handful of nuts or a low fat yoghurt. This will help you keep your metabolism fired up and stop you over-eating at mealtimes. Limit alcohol consumption to 1 unit per day. Replace your normal dinner plate with one 24 ON OUR DOORSTEP

no more than 9” diameter and split it ¼ lean protein (meat, fish, eggs, soya), ¼ starchy carbs (pasta, potato, rice) and ½ vegetables. Repeat the exercise from week 1 but increase the intensity so that you are breathing more heavily and sweating. Add 2 sets of 10 resistance exercises using resistance bands, dumbbells or your own bodyweight on 2 days, ideally alternating with the cardiovascular work and including upper and lower body exercises. Increase your cardiovascular sessions to 30 minutes. WEEK 3

Switch to wholemeal bread, pasta and rice. Cut out all cakes, biscuits and chocolate. Add a third set of resistance exercises. Aim to walk/jog/cycle/swim further in each 30 minute cardio session. WEEK 4

1 week to go! Reduce the amount of starchy carbohydrates to 2 small servings a day (1 serving = 1 piece bread, 3 small new potatoes, 40g uncooked past/rice). Limit alcohol consumption to just two nights a week. Do 30 mins of cardiovascular exercise on 5 days and your resistance workouts on 4, but ensure you build in one full day’s rest. Then pack your swimsuit and sun tan lotion and have a fabulous holiday! VISIT OUR NEW WEBSITE WWW.ONOURDOORSTEP.CO.UK

Rumble in the Jungle A blessing or a curse? Lucky to have great access to major road networks, but living with added noise and congestion in what should be a quiet, serene village. Whatever your view, here are some facts and a little bit of history on our beloved motorway! The “Rumble” of course, is the constant background noise of the M60, our local contribution to the national road network. The “Jungle”, the remnants of the once far more extensive Worsley Woods, through which the motorway smashed on its construction path to Hull, some 40 years ago.

A Motorway with an Identity Problem? So firstly, what do we call this motorway? Some would say the M62 and, for the stretch from Junction 13 eastwards through the Woods, they (arguably) would be right. They would also be right if they said it was the M60, for the two motorways run in concert for several miles. Turn in the opposite direction and you find a similar situation. Between Junctions 13 and 12 (the M602 junction), it again is both the M60 and M62, but after that point it is the M60, that was formerly the M62 to Sale, but for some years and some existing signs still attest to this day, it became the M63!

The Motorway Age is Born! Impressed by the autobahns of Germany, in 1946 the British Government decreed that we should have a similar road network. In 1949 the Special Roads Bill was passed and so work could begin. So which motorway came first? Was it the Preston Bypass or the first stretch of the M1? Well, the Preston Bypass was the first experimental motorway to open in Dec 1958, as part of the M6. The M1 is the UK’s first full length motorway with the first section opening in Nov 1959. However, the first construction work on a UK motorway took place here! The distinguished seven mile stretch of the “Stretford-Eccles ByPass”, designated M62 and 36 ON OUR DOORSTEP

to run between Sale and Worsley Courthouse, was planned as early as 1951. Work started in 1953, with the construction of the ramps that later were to carry the Barton High Level Bridge, thus predating all other "first" contenders. However, completion of the Motorway was not until 1960, due to the major work involved in construction of the actual Bridge. Another “first” is that the Stretford-Eccles Bypass was the first stretch of motorway built and maintained by a local authority, in this case Lancashire County Council. And what a sensation it was! At the time of its completion my boss, in a Manchester advertising agency, was Jack Rosenthal, who later gained great fame as a playwright. He possessed an elderly Ford Prefect, rusty blue, which he named “Sinbad”. Living in Flixton himself, he often gave me a lift home to Winton so that we could enjoy a heady dash along the new motorway - virtually no traffic (people were initially very nervous of such “racetracks”), close to 70 exhilarating mph! Then, with his first fees from writing early episodes of “Coronation Street”, he bought a Wolseley which he called “Embryo”, in which we got up to 80mph! Songs were written about this early incarnation of the M62 check them out on Google. The commemorative stone marking the opening of the M62 Stretford-Eccles Bypass. and leaving the motorway. Though the Woods were regarded even then as a beauty spot and were staunchly defended by local groups, there was nothing like the official appreciation of the environment that there is today. The motorway had to be built, this was the best route at the lowest cost, end of discussion, was the attitude. Worsley Courthouse, pre-motorway, early 1900’s (Courtesy of Daveweb)

The Impact on Worsley In the early days, the Bypass brought a wider range of commuters to the village. New housing was built - from 1965 onwards, houses replaced the bowling green on Farm Lane. The greater impact came 10 years after its opening - extensions from Liverpool and across to the Pennines and Yorkshire, began to realise the present form of the M62. In 1971, for Worsley this meant the drive through the Woods - a devastating event for nature but of surprisingly low impact for village life in Worsley and the surrounding villages. Yes, an appalling mess for quite some time in terms of mud, noise and traffic disruption, but very few buildings were involved in the route and demolitions were not an issue. The old road connections were untouched (although impeded by frantically busy roundabouts) and still served their purpose. The most fundamental lasting effect was the enormous traffic burden that the motorway brought with it (plus the addition of the M602) both in terms of joining

The bulldozers moved in, the cutting was excavated through the trees. Where once a delightful open field, fringed by rhododendrons, backed on to St Marks Church and greeted those who climbed the steep stepped path from the Delph, there now exists only scrub bordering the motorway embankment. Still, deeper in the Wood, there is a winding walk through ancient oak and beech trees. It descends into the valley of Kempnough Brook and formerly led to a small glade where wonderfully fragrant wild garlic and a solitary red flowering hawthorn grew. Now, sadly gone and in their place, a dank culvert which trembles beneath the weight of the traffic above, and out of which the Brook issues. On the far side the original walk still exists to Greenleach Lane but somehow the original magic is banished by the motorway interlude. Thus the quietude of Worsley of 50 years ago was banished forever. Though still praised for its many beautiful byways it has acquired a new but dubious fame - as “Junction 13, one of the Nation’s worst traffic blackspots”. Written by John Kirwin

Small Business Advice Local Tax and Accountancy Specialist, Chris Jones, provides advice for small businesses TODAY’S TOPIC: LOW PAID STAFF FILING REQUIREMENTS Q: I want to take on my ďŹ rst member of sta for 16 hours a week and I’ll pay her the minimum wage for now. What requirements do I have for the collec on of tax and na onal insurance etc, and what do I need to ďŹ le with HMRC?

A: Unless employees provide you with a P45 from a previous employment, you should always get them to complete HMRC form P46. However, assuming she indicates this is her only job since 6 April on the P46 (box A), you needn’t submit this to HMRC because she will be earning below the Lower Earnings Level (LEL), which for 2011/12 is ÂŁ102 per week. You can simply ďŹ le it away un l her earnings exceed this level. Again on the assump on that she cked box A, you will not need to calculate any tax or na onal insurance because her earnings do not exceed either of the thresholds. So unless her earnings exceed the LEL, you can simply pay her gross pay. You will not need to complete the annual forms P14, P60 or P35 either because her earnings are below the LEL. So you have no requirements to ďŹ le anything with HMRC or provide anything to your employee. On a prac cal note though, if your employee is claiming tax credits she may want you to ďŹ ll out a P60 for her so that she has evidence of her earnings.
