LONDON OLYMPICS 2012

WORSLEY PHYSIOS SUPPORTING TEAM GB

With the London Olympics finally arriving and all eyes on Team GB, what involvement does our local area have?

One local business is heavily involved with the GB athletics team. Local physios “athlete matters” from Worsley Physio Clinic, based in Roe Green have been working with the GB Athletics Team in preparation for the London 2012 Olympic Games, supporting long distance runners (from 800m to the marathon) at their high altitude GB training camps at Iten in Kenya and Font Romeu in the French Pyrenees. This includes Paula Radcliffe (World Marathon Record Holder), Mo Farah (5,000m World Champion) and Hannah England (1,500 World Silver Medallist). Many of the athletes will stay at altitude until around 2 days before their Olympic events. Team GB Physio, Duncan Mason shares his typical day at the camp:“Camp work usually involves getting up to start work at 8am to do pre-run checks on athletes who are suffering niggles and we tape them with ‘magic’ pink kinesio tape to correct abnormalities in their running biomechanics. Work starts in earnest in the afternoon when athletes attend for treatment to the inevitable niggles that develop as a result of running over 100 miles a week. This may involve sports massage, joint manipulation and corrective taping and exercises. Athletes who are injured need to supplement fitness with alternative training strategies such as cycling, 10 ON OUR DOORSTEP

cross training or aqua jogging. If they are returning to running they need a progressive training plan - this is where our background as competitive athletes and coaches is essential. Rehabilitation sessions tend to occur in the late afternoon in the gym, which is located a short walk from the altitude centre. Athletes who are at a competitive level need to have weight training as part of their recovery process so that they can withstand the stresses and strains of competition. Inadequate rehabilitation is the usual reason behind re-injury so it important to get this right as this could be the difference between winning a medal and getting injured. The afternoon usually finishes with my core stability class which proved very popular with elite athletes who understand its important role in injury prevention and performance enhancement. It’s this sort of little thing that may make the difference. Most of our physiotherapists have worked with the country’s leading endurance athletes. The treatments we give to the international athletes on training camps are also the same as delivered at Worsley Physio Clinic in Roe Green including core stability classes, sports massage and physiotherapy”. Duncan will be working in the Olympic holding camp in the lead up to the Olympic Games this summer. Colleague Andy Walling will also be carrying the torch in the Olympic torch relay!

KEEP CALM AND BEAT EXAM STRESS

The summer term is upon us AND already and the dreaded exams are lurking! A survey by Childline has found that 92% of children feel anxious about revision and exams. If you are the parent of a teenager sitting their GCSE’s this month I am sure the end of June can’t come soon enough. We are into the final straight, but it is important to keep up their moral and the pace of their revision.

COME TO KIP

With months of hard work and preparation almost over they are hoping that it will have all been worth while! It is no surprise that taking exams is one of the most stressful times in a young person’s life, particularly as 18 ON OUR DOORSTEP

their importance may have been drilled into them for months, sometimes years, beforehand. Some pupils and students are able to handle the pressures: they may get nervous but they cope. Other people become anxious, agitated, bad-tempered and may even become literally ill or seriously depressed. Remember that anxiety is a normal reaction to stress, but make sure that they are anxious because they want to do well and not because they want to please you!

HELP YOUR CHILD BEAT EXAM STRESS There are many ways in which you can help and prepare your child to cope with exam stress. These handy hints should be considered before any test your child might be sitting and it is not too late to sit down with your child and make sure their revision is on target. FOR ADVERTISING OR GENERAL ENQUIRIES, PLEASE CALL 0161 790 2504

OOD JunJul12:issue 17

25/5/12

13:15

Page 19

7 TIPS TO HELP BEAT EXAM STRESS: Make a realistic revision timetable and

stick to it. Make summary notes of your books,

notes and essays to make them more user-friendly. Think carefully about what revision routine best suits you. If you are a morning person do most of your studying before lunch, not late at night when you can’t concentrate or you feel too sleepy. Try answering questions from past exam papers or explaining tricky answers to someone else to make sure you have made sense of it. If you really cannot concentrate it may be because you are tired or hungry or just bored. Take a short break and come back to it 10 minutes later. Always ask for help if there are things you don’t understand, and especially if you’re feeling stressed out. If stress really gets on top of you, talk to your parents or your teachers. Finally, never forget that there is life after revision and exams.

HOW CAN PARENTS HELP TO OVERCOME EXAM STRESS? It is not unusual for parents to be as nervous as their sons or daughters during exams, but parents have a major part to play in helping their children cope with the stresses of exam time. Make sure your son or daughter gets enough sleep and keeps physically fit. Help by testing your son or daughter to make sure their revision is working. Buy them revision books and insist that they take their breaks. Most importantly, parents need to lighten the pressure they themselves place on their child so that they don’t worry unnecessarily.

Kip McGrath provides exam preparation Extra help and support is available to ease exam pressures and build your child’s confidence at the Kip McGrath Education Centres in Monton and Walkden. If your child is sitting a Maths or English exam in the coming academic year, please get in touch to see if we can help. We aim to increase children’s self-esteem and confidence as well as their academic performance by offering tutoring to 6-16 year olds in Maths, English, Reading and Spelling. The centre can tailor a programme of work to focus on any areas of weakness your child might be experiencing.

KEEP BRAINS ACTIVE THIS SUMMER AT THE KIP MCGRATH SUMMER SCHOOLS! If your child has exams coming up in the next school year, of if you feel they need a boost in Maths or English, then it may be beneficial to keep their learning active over the summer at Kip’s summer sessions. We can have your child ready to return to school in September with a positive attitude and ready for the new school year. Kip McGrath are holding Summer Schools at the Monton and Walkden Centres from 30th July to 31st August. If you would like more details of lesson times and content, please call: Justine (Monton): 0161 278 2430 or Samantha (Walkden): 0161 790 2100 New students are offered FREE assessments

Health & Beauty

Your Top 5 Skin Questions Answered With over 12 years experience in the industry, Dawn Bate at Worsley Laser Clinic shares her advice on how to get the best from your skin....

1

Why do I need to wear a sunscreen all year round?

2

My skin is dehydrated, but I drink 2 litres of water every day!

UVA rays cause ageing to the skin. They attack our skin all year round (even in winter!). UVA rays penetrate the deeper layers of the skin, generating dangerous free radicals that cause wrinkles! UVB are the burning rays of the sun that we feel on a hot sunny day. These damage the DNA structure of the skin cell. So, use a broad spectrum sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection all year round.

Your skin is the last organ to benefit from the water you drink. Apply a topical hydrator containing hyaluronic acid to your skin morning and evening; this will plump out dehydrated skin cells.

3

What’s wrong with using soap and water?

Soap is alkaline and your skin is acidic! The skins natural barrier is called the acid mantle. If you use an alkaline product on your skin it will damage the acid mantle, stripping your skin of its natural oils and causing dehydration (lack of water). This will make dry skin dryer and oily skin oilier! We need to use a product with an acid PH to increase the skins natural bacteria and strengthen the barrier function.

I look after my skin properly but my skin is not improving, what can I do?

Take a good skin supplement to feed your skin from within and make a food diary in case you have an intolerance. Update your make-up bag and chose a high quality mineral range which is free from artificial colour, fragrance, talc, and other unnecessary ingredients.

24 ON OUR DOORSTEP

Treat yourself to a regular facial. Stress can cause acne so a bit of “me time” may help. A professional treatment will also work much deeper into the dermal layers of the skin addressing numerous problems and normalising the skin. Ask a skin specialist to have a look at the products you’re using at home. Labels can be confusing and you may be using a product that’s not suitable for your skin.

5

Is there a treatment for my facial thread veins?

Yes! IPL laser is an extremely effective method of treating facial thread veins. A course of 3 treatments is ideal. For a full list of beauty & aesthetic treatments, or to book a consultation, call Worsley Laser Clinic: 07435 782200

Svelte Body

GETS RESULTS!

“After only 4 treatments I woke up and thought Hey, where’s my tummy gone?” Helen - a happy Svelte client! Svelte Body’s i-Lipo machine - “an intelligent alternative to Liposuction” sounded intriguing so I had to try it. When I broke my ankle I went up from size 8-10 to a good size 12. Despite dieting and exercising after recovering, I still struggled to fit into my clothes. I had a bit of stubborn fat that would just not budge. I loved my clothes and couldn’t afford to buy new ones so had to get back into them. After just 6 treatments, I was well on my way. I now look better in my Body Con dress than ever before and don’t need my Suzanne & Trinny big pants! The treatment is non-invasive, pain & hassle free! Sessions last 50 minutes. The first 20 mins are spent lying relaxed on a bed with the laser

pads placed on the target area – for me, my tummy. You don’t feel a thing. Then you spend 30 minutes on the exercise bike to burn off the contents of the fat cells that have just been released from your chosen area. The therapists are lovely and the time goes so fast when you’re having a good natter with someone who understands exactly how you feel. At the gym I struggle to spend 10 minutes on one machine. Normally, when I lose weight it comes off my face and chest but never my tummy. With the i-Lipo you choose what area of your body you want to achieve the inch loss. If the cost puts you off trying it, then just think how much replacing your wardrobe would be. I was very sceptical of things like this before, but the proof is in the zip fastening and when that zip goes up, it is the best feeling in the world!

Pietrasanta, Italy....an undiscovered gem on Tuscany’s Golden Coast The town is abundant with authen c restaurants serving food to sa sfy the most refined palate and café life spills out on to the square. Traffic is restricted in the narrow streets, allowing the ar sts to set up their easels and show off their latest masterpieces. Charming and stylish, Pietrasanta is one of Italy's best kept secrets. Loved by Italians yet rela vely undiscovered by foreign tourists. This wonderful Medieval town is only 30 mins from Pisa airport and 3km from Tuscany’s golden beaches. Once home to the famous ar st Michelangelo, today it is home to a community of famous ar sts and sculptors and the haunt of the interna onally famous - Giorgio Armani, Naomi Campbell, Nicole Kidman & Roman Abramovich - to name but a few! World famous sculptors Henry Moore, Bo ero & Mitoraj have worked and exhibited their art here.

...and who knew this undiscovered gem was so close? Bridgewater's Idyllic Italy have specialised in Italian villa holidays since 1973. This family run company offers quality villas with pools in and around Lucca and Tuscany's golden coast. An apartment sleeping 4, in the old town of Pietrasanta, costs from £1,250pw (excl flights). Tales of Old Monton - Part 1

Donkeys on the Green…Flash Gordon at the “Prinnac” Monton today, with its beautiful floral Green, busy shops, restaurants and whimsical Lighthouse on the canal, has the air of a genteel elderly matron, graciously carrying her years with dignity, with a confidence that everything is as it always was...but nothing could be further from the truth. Sixty-plus years ago, when I was a child, Monton was very different indeed... Then it was a more crowded place, busy with traffic and industrial activity. On the banks of the canal, just beyond the bend, stood a massive spinning mill from which, every evening ,spilled hundreds of cotton workers. Chattering in their freedom they made their way home, picking cotton fluff from their clothes like dandelions blowing in the wind. Two of the village’s main roads were straddled by railway lines then, with Monton Station sitting atop an embankment overlooking a very busy canal carrying loaded coal barges to fuel Barton Power Station. More industry was just down Green Lane toward Patricroft with Mitchell Shackleton and the ROF factory. The Green? Well that was just an unkempt field in front of the church with patches of grass and a few daisies. But in the summer, on Sundays, it came to life. Kids of all ages would make their way there to see “Mr Isherwood”. This very distinguished old chap lived in one of the grand houses flanking the golf course - many of which still had stables at their rear as relics of the past. With snow-white hair and immaculate beard, boldly striped blazer and straw boater hat, he could well have been a model for the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken ! 40 ON OUR DOORSTEP

He made his entry to the Green with a flourish with two or three donkeys behind him. His pockets would be bulging with boiled sweets for his fans - perhaps 50 or so children on a sunny day. Then he would sit like a Pied Piper and read the children stories from the Bible. There would be games, races, competitions and general entertainment. The highlight of the day would be donkey rides - particularly for those who had faithfully listened to the Bible stories. The “Prinnac” was of course the Princes Cinema (now occupied by the Princes apartments) beneath the embankment of one of the former railways on Monton Road. It was one of five cinemas in Eccles in those days, the others being the Broadway (big and grand), the Regent (now Weatherspoons), the Majestic (the “Majec“), the Palladium (the “Plad” now a bingo hall) and the sadly, derelict Crown. The “Prinnac” was our local and at a Saturday matinee (always a big queue), we kids were transported to the Wild West with “Black Arrow” and the “Lone Ranger”; to the skies with Superman (up up and away!) and to Space with “Flash Gordon” to do battle with the evil Emperor Ming. It cost just 3d in old money to keep us enthralled. After, another 3d would buy a bag of chips at Kendals, the chippy opposite. My sister, ever imaginative, would squash a chip and torment me that she alone had a piece of fish… A pity, these days , that there is nothing comparable for children to those simple pleasures that we enjoyed. Materially we were poor, but in retrospect how rich we really were… Written by John Kirwin (Apr’12)
