Don’t miss our “Worsley Brook” article. You will have seen the water that runs through Worsley Woods; now you can learn about its history and its path. On a sunny day follow it from start to end, it’s a lovely walk. Wish us luck on the St Ann’s Hospice flagship event - Manchester Midnight Walk. It’s a 10k walk around the city centre on 23rd June not that far, but I’m sure my legs won’t be moving much the next day!

Community News
Saturday 1st July 2017 11am - 5pm • Dukes Drive www.montonfestival.co.uk After Monton Festival in 2015, it was clear that the event could not continue in the same way. Pavements were overcrowded with adults, pushchairs and children, roads were full of people too - it just wasn’t safe and we felt it had to be cancelled. So in 2016, instead of cancelling it altogether Monton Village Community Association introduced the new, improved (and SAFE) Monton Community Festival, held on Duke’s Drive.
Come and join us for:n Games n Speciality Food & Drink n Fun Fair n Entertainment n Music n Fun Dog Show n Stalls n Baking Competition n Bands and Street Food on Monton Road n Peter Pan, Tinkerbell and Pirate-related activity in the Fairy Forest, plus entertainers and MORE…!
Despite pouring rain, over 4,000 people came along, and it was a great success for the community. And this year, it will be even better!
We would like to recognise our sponsors, as without them we could not put on the event: Revive Mortgages, Booths Furniture, Celebrations and Cake Creations, Monton Marketing and our very own On Our Doorstep!
We are still looking for volunteers to lend a hand, so if you could help for even an hour on the day (especially before 11 or 5-6pm), it would be a great contribution to your local community. Email: liz@montonmarketing.co.uk
If you think it sounds like fun, put the date in your diary now, tell your family and friends and come along to our better than ever Festival! We look forward to seeing you there...

Summer Fitness
Run to Get Fit...
Essential Tips for Beginners Running is an ever-popular sport with a variety of targets you can set. The local area offers many opportunities for training and competing at your own pace.
Cardiac Fitness: Check your cardiac fitness before indulging in high volume/intensity training – if in doubt check with your GP. Start training with a mixture of exercise, not just by running – eg. walking, swimming, cycling etc... A Slow Build Up: Build up your training very gradually, ensuring your body can adapt to the increase in mileage and intensity. A recommended rule of thumb is not to increase mileage by more than 10% a week. Rest and recovery are also very important. Preventing Injuries: Work on your core strength and flexibility with stretching and Pilates exercises, this will help keep injuries at bay.
The Right Shoe: Good footwear is essential - seek out a local specialist running shop where staff can advise you on suitable shoes. Regular Sports Massage: Regular massages will help your recovery beween training sessions. Distance and Pace: If you are targeting a race, training should include shorter runs faster than race pace and longer runs at a slow pace. Worsley Physio can help you with Gait analysis and screening for potential weaknesses which could cause injuries. We prefer to offer preventative treatment before injuries occur. Recently, a client lost 33cm from her abdominal area after just one treatment, then went on to lose a further 17cm on her second treatment. FOOD FOR FITNESS:
Why Nutrition is so Important! I think we have all heard the phrase “it’s 40% training and 60% nutrition but I prefer “you can’t out train a bad diet. I always like to say that it is 100% of both sides that’s needed to truly maximize your efforts. The correct nutrition can help fuel you for a better workout, increase your recovery rate and even help to improve your quality of sleep. Here are some essential tips to help you: n Have slow releasing carbohydrates before training to help provide constant energy throughout your run/gym training/classes etc. n Consume 20g-30g protein and between 10g-20g sugars post workout. This will help you recover from the training quicker and prevent any potential injuries.
n Eat every 2-3 hours to keep your metabolism sky high, thus burning calories and to keep blood sugar levels stable preventing insulin release. n Drink plenty of water. When dehydrated your body starts storing body fat and struggles to improve muscle tone because after all, over 60% of your body is made up of water n Never skip breakfast! Your body needs to know that you are awake so that it can start working efficiently, as it has been fasting whilst you have been asleep and what better way than some protein pancakes. n Early nights. Beauty, Health and Wellbeing at Salford City College With a focus on wellbeing, brand new gyms, hair and beauty salons, students at Salford City College get the opportunity to stay healthy and feel good. From 7.30am two mornings per week a group of students and staff start their day with a spin class, with many more students working out in the gym in-between classes or at the end of the day. These facilities enable all students to stay fit and encourage exercise during their college day. Students receive a full induction and can be supported with an exercise programme to help them reach their target. Wellbeing is high on the agenda at Salford City College as the benefits are clear to see. Staff at the head office centre have a ‘Wednesday Walk’ around Salford Quays and many staff have taken up running since the College sponsored the Salford 10K a couple of years ago. Indeed, CEO
John Spindler is a keen marathon runner, having just completed his 10th marathon. John said “I believe that we should support students and staff to keep fit and healthy. Activities go beyond fitness; we ensure that we offer healthy food in our cafes, we have visiting speakers from a range of health related organisations for students and staff to talk to, and staff can get their annual health checks done on site”. But for those students and staff who do not want to be energetic, they can take time out in one of the hair and beauty salons having a relaxing treatment such as a facial, massage or new haircut. ... for men may come, and men may go, but I go on forever Tennyson “The Brook” The Aviary: The hunting lodge of the Earl of Ellesmere
Worsley Brook Think not a few hundred years, nor even a few thousand, it could be as much as a million, perhaps even more. How long does a stream run for? If it is the Colorado River then you can count the years in many millions – enough to carve the Grand Canyon. The answer is, of course, as long as rain falls on a slope and collects to form a trickle, that builds into a steady flow. Unless there is a drastic change of climate, to create a desert, the stream will “live” and bring life to wherever it flows. So streams are ancient. They are older than anything except the rocks of the land they flow through and our local rivulet - Worsley Brook - is no exception.
An Ancient Stream This Brook predates the hamlets and towns through which it flows. It, and its fresh water, are probably the reason they stand where they are today. But, as streams go, it is never going to achieve anything in the rankings for length, width or depth. In length it is little more than six miles from its source in Walkden to its outlet into the Manchester Ship Canal (formerly the River Irwell). Quite where the Brook has its source is unknown to me. I have traced it to the higher ground of Walkden but modern development and culverting conceal the spot itself. I suspect a spring somewhere. However, once it tunnels under the East Lancs Road on its way south, it begins to assert itself. On what was (prior to the M60), a delightful glade full of wild garlic, 30 ON OUR DOORSTEP
it is joined by Kempnough Brook, from Lumbar Lane. This Brook has, in turn, travelled from the vicinity of Little Hulton. Now the Brook runs beneath the M60 before being released into the beauty of Worsley Woods on its ancient course. In the 19th century the Earl of Ellesmere decided on a spot of shooting and fishing on his doorstep and had a Lodge built, The Aviary. The Brook was dammed to create a lake that now provides one of the prettiest views in the area. The Brook was allowed to proceed via an overflow plunge into a tunnel. which drops the stream about 50ft lower, to again run through the Woods. However, this is only the beginning of its adventures for, after only a few hundred yards, it vanishes yet again, into a gaping tunnel...
Underground What Worsley Brook may lack in size, it more than makes up for in history. This little stream has contributed an immense legacy to posterity; starting in the 14th century and, most actively, in the Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries. It was first harnessed to power a water mill, used for the grinding of grain into flour or meal. Any trace of this early mill are long since gone, but its past presence is preserved in the name of the picturesque Mill Brow road where FOR ADVERTISING OR GENERAL ENQUIRIES, PLEASE CALL 0161 790 2504

Local History
Old Warke Dam
Merging of Worsley and Kempnough Brooks
the back gardens look down upon the stream. It is said that the Brook was once considered as the answer to the Duke of Bridgewater’s problem of transporting his coal to Manchester. It was to be made into a canal, to the Irwell at Barton, and thence up that river to Manchester. In the event, this idea was abandoned in favour of the now famous Bridgewater Canal. It was the planned path of this canal - and an adjacent site intended to be among the world’s first industrial estates - that meant Worsley Brook had to go underground. Not just underground, but under canal! So, hidden from view behind Mill Brow, a tunnel was carved from the sandstone rock which, faced with brick, runs under what became the Duke’s industrial estate (what we now know as Worsley Green!), to go UNDER the canal for a total distance of around 400 yards from where it leaves the Woods. The only surface evidence of this passage of the Green is a sluice gate structure, fenced and hidden by bushes. The tunnel exits on Barton Road about 20 feet below road level and is easily viewed from the footpath. After a brief scrap of daylight the Brook again tunnels under the mound ruin and intact underground chambers of the former lime kilns on Barton Road, before finally

The main stream
emerging to freedom. A recent expedition to explore these tunnels found them in need of some maintenance - not surprising after 250 years - but still largely sound. The maintenance has subsequently been done. Despite having been used as a disposal system by many uncaring businesses and individuals over past years, the Brook has proved remarkably resilient. Where once one could tell the day of the week by the colour of its waters (there was a dye works somewhere along its course, they used purple on Thursdays) it has run clear for decades. The Brook winds through Winton and islands of greenery, created by access roads to the M60 and there is much wildlife; through Peel Green, past the Salford Reds/ Sale Sharks stadium to finally join the Ship Canal. It has always had a population of Sticklebacks (“Jacksharps”) and occasional Dace, Roach and Chub in the lower reaches. Once, in the days of the Earls, it even had trout! This secretive little waterway and its wildlife (kingfishers in Winton, believe it or not) deserves our protection and respect. It has surely paid its dues.
