Offically Re-Opened! In October 2015, posters to ‘Save our Playground’ went up around Roe Green. Much to the horror and objection from the local community, Roe Green Play Park was at real risk of closure. Salford City Council had announced it would cost £100,000 to replace the park but they only had £25,000 to spend and asked if the community was prepared to raise the other £75,000. It was unanimously decided that the Community would come together to raise the deficit.
Easter Egg Hunt, Quiz Nights, a Charity Ball and Family Fundays. All a great success, supported by a passionate community with a common goal.
So the journey began. A committee was set up, chaired by local mum Sarah Walton, supported by Andrew Murphy, Kate Fawcett and Dan Stribling, which formed a charity for the fundraising activities.
By the end of 2016, enough funds had been raised to refurbish the park, and in 2017 the Committee worked closely with the Council to finalise the designs. Work finally started in February 2018 and the ‘all new’ Roe Green Play Park was officially opened on Sunday 6th May 2018 by retired paediatrician, Dr Katherine Adler. The event was attended by the Roe Green Play Park committee, Co-op, Friends of Roe Green, Salford Council, councillors and members of the community.
The Committee were dedicated, applying for grants, attaining Community Funds, running a social media campaign and a host of events including the first
Now completed, we hope you are delighted with the results. It was a fantastic experience that showed just what a Community can achieve together.

I was unable to cook a meal from scratch and everything was from a jar or a packet as I didn’t feel I had the time but through the group support and sharing ideas each week I now enjoy homemade curries, spaghetti bolognaise, massive roast dinners all washed down by a glass of wine of course! Festival of Ageing:
SALFORD Saturday 7th July, 11am – 3pm
Helly Hansen Watersports Centre, Salford Quays
Festival of Ageing: Salford is a true celebration of ageing and living well with dementia. This wonderful family day will be packed full of boat races, climbing sessions, market stalls, talks, films, scrumptious food, fun and laughter. The day aims to positively challenge the stigmas associated with ageing and dementia; it’s a day aimed at bringing together older people, young people and those in the middle to try, buy, eat, watch and enjoy. The Salford Festival is part of a wider, week round programme of Festivals happening across Greater Manchester from 2 – 15 July 2018. Salford’s Festival will feature a boat race which is returning for its second year! ‘The boat race is about bringing together those affected by dementia to have fun and take part in something totally different where dementia isn’t the focus! Last year we had

Celebrating 33 years of being “YOUR LOCAL AGENT” Carr and Hume are Salford’s oldest independent Estate Agents and this year will be celebrating 33 years of being “your local agent”. ‘Traditional meets modern’ is a great way to describe us. At Carr and Hume we embrace both longstanding traditional methods and modern online/digital techniques. We have a positive, can-do culture, which always puts the customer first. Our ethos is simple: to offer our customers a transparent, friendly and proactive service. As well as helping you to buy and sell, we also offer a fantastic rental service for landlords and tenants and block management which continues to go from strength to strength. Here is what one of our customers had to say about their recent experience: “Carr and Hume provided us with excellent service from start to %inish. We took advantage of a special offer to market our property which made it great value for money. We were advised what price to market the property at, which proved to be very accurate. Pictures were taken very promptly, the property was listed online on a Friday evening, we had bookings for viewings on the Saturday and we accepted an offer on the Monday. So things couldn't have happened any faster. All in all, we received a great service with great communication and the sales team was a pleasure to deal with throughout. We would highly recommend this estate agent.”
THE LOCAL MARKET... Being established in the Salford area for this length of time, we have seen many of the changes that the city has gone through and are immensely proud of its achievements and the continuing growth of the market in the Salford, Swinton, Worsley and Eccles areas. From the tram links in Eccles and Salford, to the highly regarded schools in Swinton, the historical beauty of Worsley, the re-invigoration of Monton
High Street and of course Media City in Salford, it is easy to see why Salford has quite rightly become one of the most popular cities in the UK. For people moving into the area we have seen a significant demand for Monton Village and the surrounding areas. With the increase of bars, restaurants and retail outlets in Monton, the area has become extremely popular for first time buyers and professionals. However, due to the low supply of stock, prices have increased considerably with a two bedroom traditional terraced off the high street averaging at £200,000. Salford and Eccles have also seen a rise in the buy to let sector with landlords country-wide snapping up apartments and terraces . South Swinton has also prospered - here we have more traditional 3 bed semi-detached properties that cater for families and are ideally positioned for commuting with great transport links into Manchester. Additionally, Moorside Primary and High School has made it a highly sought-after area for families with children. In 2016-2017 the northwest had one the highest growths in property values with an annual increase of just over 6% and judging by the fantastic start we have had to 2018, it would appear that the trend is going to continue. In our first quarter of 2018 we have agreed sales on 80% of our newly listed properties, with all of them achieving a minimum of the asking price. To celebrate this success we offering all new instructions a fixed sales fee of £500 plus vat for the months of May and June. For further information please contact the office on 0161 794 4331.

Winners of “The Best Bangladeshi Restaurant” Award Asian Restaurant Awards 2018
Asian Restaurant Awards 2018 On Monday 5th March 2018, the Asian Catering Federation (ACF) hosted their first Asian Restaurant Awards. The winners of the inaugural Asian Restaurant Awards were announced at a glittering awards ceremony, held at the Manchester Hilton. The evening, attended by over 500 leading restaurateurs, chefs, food journalists and VIP guests, was hosted by BBC TV news anchor, Barbita Sharma.
The Naz, in Monton, scooped the presitgious title of “Best Bangladeshi Restaurant”. The Asian Restaurant Awards were organised by the Asian Catering Federation (ACF) which represents the nation’s 30,000 Asian and Oriental restaurants. In his keynote speech, ACF Chairman Yawar Khan declared the Asian Restaurants Awards a great success and promised to return next year with “an even bigger and better event.” In his programme notes, Asian Restaurant Awards judge, George Shaw, commented: “Over 25 years ago culinary pioneer Madha Jaffrey told me that too many Asian restaurant owners were in a race to the bottom, under cutting each other’s prices, with enormous menus of poorly cooked dishes. Tonight, we celebrate the achievements of those in a race to the top.” Manchester's Deputy Mayor congratulated Mr Mannan, owner of The Naz, and his family on his success. RHS Bridgewater
BOOTHSTOWN IS BOOMING Salford has undergone major regeneration over the last decade and more people than ever are choosing Salford as a place to live, work and invest. Boothstown has become one of the most sought after areas to live with good local schools and amenities, modern housing, great transport links and its proximity to green space, woodland the Bridgewater Canal. RHS Bridgewater, the fifth RHS garden, has given the community a huge boost. The £30m project, the biggest gardening project in Europe, was granted full planning permission in June 2017 and work underway at the site of Worsley New Hall. To meet housing demand, two major developments are in progress with c.300 homes being built between Boothstown and the RHS site, and another 107 off Highclove Lane and Malkins Wood. At the heart of Boothstown is the Standfield Centre, a small parade of shops providing a host of goods and services from groceries to hardware, beauty to funeral services, cafes to restaurants and much more... In this issue we feature some of the more well-established independent businesses and some of the new kids on the block! Over the last six years, the centre has undergone much change with a first wave of new businesses led by Bexters - the first independent cafe-bar to open here in 2012. Taking a gamble on a run down shopping centre (before Sainsbury Local arrived), they proved there was a market for a coffee shop and daytime eatery in Boothstown. Refurbished in 2017, Bexters relaunched as a cafe by day and cocktail bar by night. Italian restaurant Vesuvio followed 16 months later, opening in November 2013. Run by Giuseppe and Nicola, previously chefs at the famous San Carlo Group, the restaurant has flourished, winning 3 Italian awards in 2015/16 and LUX Food & Drink “Best Italian Restaurant 2017” . 22 ON OUR DOORSTEP
In 2014, Bridgewater Funeral Service joined the Standfield Centre. They are proud to be a true family business with Emma and Abbie looking after local families at their time of need. They have gone from strength to strength and are expanding into a larger building on Chaddock Lane this summer, but will be retaining their presence at the Centre for the foreseeable future. A.B. Hardware DIY & Gifts took over the previous hardware store in 2016. An indispensable shop providing an extensive range of products including Hardware & DIY, Homeware & Gifts, and services such as Dry Cleaning, key cutting and shoe repairs. In the last six months, Boothstown has experienced a second wave of new businesses. At the Centre, Present Trend opened in November 2017. Selling cards, gifts and homeware, Claire has a range of stylish stockists, great quality brands, perfect for occasions or interiors. You will find stockists in other stores at higher prices! Masons bar is the newest cafe-bar, opening its doors in March this year. Family run, they are keen to support local businesses such as Lars Zollinger butchers in Roe Green and donate to local fundraisers. It’s a community focused place for people to socialise and enjoy quality food and drink in a relaxed child friendly environment. Off the Centre, last November, came Why Not? cafe on Leigh Road. Cafe by day and bar in the evening, Why Not? Cafe brings a touch of Manchester’s Northern Quarter into Boothstown. With an eclectic mix of both décor and music, they have something for everyone. Menu includes artisan hotdogs, burgers and sandwiches, milkshakes, beers and they do a mean G&T too! Family friendly, dog friendly and well.... just friendly! In the same month, family-friendly cafe Bambino opened on Chaddock Lane; they feature in our Competition. Boothstown is booming and is the place to be!

Local History
Freemen of the City of Salford Many people remember that on 17th November 2017 the artist Harold Riley was made a Freeman of the City of Salford. He was the 25th recipient – who was the first? To be admitted as a Freeman is a tradition that has no real privileges but is regarded as a honour given to people who have lived or worked in the city of Salford and are valued members of the community. In its oldest sense a ‘Freeman’ referred to someone who had certain privileges in a city or borough such as the right to earn money and to own land. However with reforms to local government administration in the late 19th century, the award of ‘Freeman’ became an honour and more about civic pride. The first award was made to Benjamin Armitage, an industrialist, social reformer and MP, who was admitted on 18 January 1899. In October 1898, on the initiation of the then Mayor Alderman Sir Richard Mottram, the Council agreed to present the Freedom of the Borough to Mr Armitage and Mr Ben Wolfe Levy of London, and both gentlemen had accepted (Salford City Reporter, 24 December 1898). Mr Levy amongst other things had been responsible for developing the David Lewis Recreation Ground at the far end of Peel Park. The confirmation ceremony was held in the Council Chamber at Salford Town Hall, Bexley Square, when a special Council meeting was convened. Other recipients have included David Lloyd George, as a tribute to his leadership during the First World War, L.S. Lowry, Nelson Mandela and Ryan Giggs. Mrs Charis Frankenburg MA JP was the first woman to be admitted in November 1972 almost seventy-five years after the honour had been introduced. Forty years ago when supporting one of the candidates, Mayor J Hardman summed up the importance of the honour: ‘It is an occasion for happiness and 26 ON OUR DOORSTEP
pleasure. It enables the City Council to express in a formal manner its appreciation of the services given to the City over many years.’ The article above was written by Don Rainger and a more comprehensive description of the Freemen of Salford appears in the latest edition of Salford Link. Salford Link is Salford’s Local History Magazine and is produced twice a year. It has appeared for many years under the name LifeTimes Link, but with this issue has changed to Salford Link. It is a 28 page full colour A4 magazine costing just £3 and is available from city libraries, Salford Museum and Ordsall Hall. Recent issues have been produced by a team of volunteers and people are encouraged to take out a subscription, so for only £8 you can have two issues delivered to your door. For subscriptions visit www.salfordcommunityleisure.co.uk/culture We also welcome contributions which can be sent to salfordlink@outlook.com or The Editor, Salford Link, Salford Museum and Art Gallery, The Crescent, Salford M5 4WU. The deadline for the next issue is 12th October. Other articles in the current issue include: Worsley Clocks, 1918 Street, Joseph Brotherton, Pilkington Archives, Markendale Portraits and news from Salford Museum, Ordsall Hall and Local History Societies.
