RUN TALK RUN WORSLEY The Run Talk Run charity is a global initiative offering a free weekly 5km gentle jog and a safe space for people to talk to others. There are clubs all over the UK and abroad. At Run Talk Run there are no coaches, counsellors or anyone offering advice; we are there to support each other, to get outdoors and to exercise. The main aim of the group is to combine the benefits of talking and of exercise with an emphasis on individual and collective health and well-being, both mental and physical. There are no PBs involved, no timings and no pressure, we’re a place for all paces and head spaces!
Our Run Talk Run Worsley group meets every Tuesday at 6.45pm at the Standfield Centre in Boothstown (M28 1FB). We have a 15 minute welcome for everyone to meet and chat together before we start our loop at 7pm. “We walk a bit, we run a bit, we talk a lot” is our weekly motto and we always start and finish together, there’s no such thing as “the back of the group”. Adults of all abilities are welcome and we’d love to see you join us! Sign up is completely free via an app called MyCrew. LOCAL FOODBANK CHAMPION Keith Walker is now a local champion for Salford Foodbank. Supporting the charity since 2013, Keith tells us how it has become close to his heart and part of his life. “Following redundancy in 2018, I struggled with anxiety and the Foodbank gave me a sense of purpose, so when I heard about the Box on the Docks Project in November 2020, I was keen to get involved and became an official donation point in Boothstown. I promoted my doorstep donation point on social media through Nextdoor, Facebook and LinkedIn, displayed posters and distributed leaflets around the local community. Since launching in December 2020, the response from the local community, family, friends and work
colleagues has been amazing. Up to the end of April, we have weighed in over 2,747kg of food. Donations left in my Mini Foodbox are stored in crates in my garage and the Foodbank come and collect it once a month. Volunteering is extremely rewarding. Over the last few years, and particularly during the pandemic, I’ve realised how lucky I am and how good it feels to give back to the local community. To everyone who has donated, thank you so much, it’s greatly appreciated. You can find my donation point at 34 Boothstown Drive, Worsley, M28 1UF. If anyone is interested in having an official donation point on their drive email: hello@foodgiftbox.co.uk. It would be great to have more donation points across Salford.”

Salford Step Into Action
ONE YEAR ON!
At the start of the pandemic, Gemma Fish began an initiative to help those in need in the Little Hulton & Walkden area. We featured Step Into Action in our JunJul20 issue and are pleased to report on their progress again....
Wow! What a year it has been! We now have a permanent base on the ground floor of Linnyshaw Mill in the heart of Walkden. We have a community shop selling affordable items for all along with our hub and food shop too which launches this June! We continue to help our local community with food parcels, home cooked meals, welfare packs and furniture as required. We now also deliver to Eccles, Swinton and Salford. One major highlight was our founder Gemma Fish being crowned Citizen of the Year 2020 at the Spirit of Salford Awards! Then in May, we had a great time meeting Andy Burnham and Paul Dennett and telling them about Salford Step into Action; what

Local History
William Barber Upjohn
W
ith the RHS Bridgewater site having recently opened, I thought it an appropriate time to bring to one's attention to this gentleman who served as Head Gardener to the Earls of Ellesmere for over 50 years.
He came to Worsley in 1871 and in that time served the third Earl and the area most nobly. He quickly became a highly recognised professional and became a founder member of the Worsley and Swinton Horticultural and Agricultural Society. For numerous years, the grounds of the New Hall hosted its annual show, covering plants, trees, fruits, vegetables and farm animals. He toured the country to represent the Earl at similar shows and won a large number of awards. In later life, he turned to judging. William was born in Norfolk and worked as a young man in various parts of the UK. He and his wife, Mary Mathieson Simpson Robertson, married at Dalkeith, Midlothian, on 21 December 1870 and within four months relocated to Worsley. They were to have 14 children, of whom 3 sadly died at a very young age, and a fourth (Frank Forsythe Upjohn) who, having emigrated to America, was killed in Hawaii, whilst on shore leave from a U.S. naval survey vessel. His gravestone today stands in a cemetery in Honolulu. A grandson of his, (William Gordon Wheeler), born to Margery Upjohn (his fourth daughter) and Frederick Wheeler, attended Manchester Grammar School and St. Mark's Church. Very much influenced by the Rev. Canon H. W. Thorne, he was initially ordained into the Church of England in 1934. However, in 1936 he finally decided to become a Catholic and was received into the Church at Downside Abbey in September that year. In his later years, he specifically mentioned the influence of Canon Thorne, “my favourite Vicar, to whom I owe so much”.
The Liverpool Echo for Saturday 17 June 1939 reported: G.O.M. OF WORSLEY Mr. W. B. Upjohn, grand old man Worsley, Lancashire, died at his home, the head gardener’s cottage on the Ellesmere Estate, to-day. He was 96. He was known to thousands as a pioneer of Worsley Agricultural and Horticultural Show. He missed only one show in seventy-five years. A native of Norfolk, in his early twenties he was head gardener to the Earl of Ellesmere, and once helped King George V to plant a tree to commemorate a Northern visit. A keen church worker, he ascribed his long life to the goodness of God and a simple, temperate life. William, his wife, and the 3 young children are all buried in the churchyard, but regrettably no headstone exists marking the plot. For many years, William B. Upjohn served as a sidesman at the church. [For more information, please visit the website of the Worsley Civic Trust > St.Mark's Church Graveyard Tales]

HOW TO CHOOSE AND TRUST YOUR PARENT’S CARERS
Written by Bracken Jelier
Before our parents reach the age of needing a carer, it’s very easy to say that we’ll be ‘happy to do it’. But it really isn’t an easy task, and complicated by emotional and love - it’s even harder. That’s why it begins to be impossible to have the patience, and sometimes also the skills, to be able to do it all at home alone. So how do you transition to asking for help elsewhere? How do you find the right type of care for your loved ones and how, most importantly, do you then place all of your trust in that person that it’s being done the way you want it when you’re not there? This may make the difference between your parents being able to live independently at home or having to leave home and live somewhere completely new. What options are available?
catch up on life elsewhere, returning refreshed and reinvigorated. This can be particularly helpful if your parent has dementia or is recovering from an illness or operation.
Home Care Assistance This is simply help with physically demanding tasks at home. If they need help getting out of bed, bathing or showering, visiting the toilet, cooking, taking their medication and doing the shopping.
Do your parents need the help? You need to consider what assistance may be needed now, what may be needed later and how many hours they may need. What sort of person will they be most comfortable with? A younger person, a male/female, someone friendly and approachable, someone professional that remains impersonal? The same person every time or a mix of different people?
Home Help This help with housekeeping; cleaning, bed making, washing up, laundry etc. Agency If you find the planning, organising and paperwork too much then an agency can do everything for you. It may be more expensive, but you’ll always be assured that they will be there when they say they will, that there will be cover if the carer has to go sick, and that you’ll get reports on the care or any issues when you need them. Live-in Care? Round-the-clock live-in care provides a far greater level of assistance; everything from palliative, to ensuring they take their medication, turning them in bed if they are at risk from bed sores, dietary support, helping with housework and walking the dog. Day Programs Private or local authority centres are available for adult day care, some specialising in particular issues including Alzheimer’s. These offer activities, support and socialisation. Accompanying them on the first few visits may help your parent adapt. Respite Care This is some time where your parent would be looked after in a residential facility, or taken care of in their own home allowing you to go on holiday or 14 ON OUR DOORSTEP
Having the conversation with them Most people will not be too willing to accept that they need the help in the first place, unless there has been a situation such as a fall or illness. Your parent may fiercely value their independence or worry about being a burden. It may be that you start the conversation early, long before it’s truly needed. But involving them in some way will certainly ease the shock of that new person coming into their home. How to find someone You can advertise locally, or even use social media to see if you can find personal recommendations. You can talk to your GP if you believe the help needed is more skill-based. There are also care agencies and it’s worth investigating who provides help in the nearby vicinity.
Don’t rush into it. You’ll need to carry out background checks - references and DBS checks. You may also need to register with HMRC as an employer, operate PAYE, pay National Insurance and statutory sick pay (SSP) and obtain employer’s liability insurance. Don’t be afraid to say no! Consider a quick trial period. If someone doesn’t feel right then don’t use them - go with your gut instinct! WWW.ONOURDOORSTEP.CO.UK

THE MOST EXPENSIVE MODEL RAILWAY IN THE WORLD
D
uring the lockdown may people have returned to, or taken up hobbies. One popular hobby is model railways. Did you know that one of the best model railways in the world was once constructed in Worsley? The 1898-9 edition of The Harmsworth Monthly Pictorial Magazine carried an article on “A £10,000 Toy”, which was described as the most expensive miniature model railway system in the world. It was owned by Mr. Percy Leigh of Brentwood, Worsley and was built in a room specially built onto the house. Presumably, model railway kits were not available at this time and so the whole construction was made by Messrs Lucas and Davies. The 276 feet of double line track was made of steel specially rolled in Sheffield. There were 2,000 pitch pine sleepers, 4,000 cast-iron chairs and 16,000 screws holding them in place.
“
The line started from Oakgreen, the principal station, where were located the offices of the management. In front of the buildings was a platform twenty-four feet long, provided with the usual seats and other conveniences for passengers, of whom a few could be noticed waiting for the express to convey them to their destinations. The platform was sheltered from the elements by a glass roof, while the gates admitting to it were of the regular palisade type. At the further end was a passenger footbridge of trellis-work covered over; it stood high above the line, and was reached by two staircases. Behind the station proper was the goods station and siding, forty feet long, the goods shed itself being four feet long. Both of these stations, and indeed the other station and the whole line, were beautifully lit up, when necessary, by electric lamps 16 ON OUR DOORSTEP
fitted with reflectors. There were in all forty-eight of these soft, lovely lights. The locomotive, with its tender, was five feet long and about eighteen inches in height. It was of sixinch gauge, and was an exact duplicate on a small scale of an express of the London and North-Western Railway. It was a real working locomotive, most exquisitely made. Compared with the full size trains its boiler hadn’t the usual number of tubes, it had no injector, and steam was got up in it by a charcoal fire. There were both a passenger train and a goods train. The former consisted of three carriages and a guard’s van. One carriage was a first-class corridor, a second was a third-class corridor, and the third was a complete first-class and third-class carriage. Each of them was fitted with the usual upholstered seats found in compartments belonging to their classification; there were hat racks and blinds, mirrors and lavatories and so forth in every carriage; there were carpets, too, on the floors of the first-class. The London and North-Western Railway took a friendly interest in the smallest, and supplied it with the drawings and models from which it and its rolling stock had been imitated. Mr Leigh opened the railway on a number of occasions for visitors and thus raised funds for charity.

Legal Column
WHAT IS A LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY (LPA)? A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document which allows you to formally appoint others to make decisions for you in the event that you lose the mental capacity to make those decisions yourself. They can only be made while you have sufficient mental capacity to do so. LPAs are very useful tools to have in place as they can avoid costly court proceedings - if a person has not made LPAs and they subsequently lose mental capacity due to an illness such as dementia or stroke, the Court of Protection will have to appoint a Deputy which can prove lengthy and expensive. LPAs are also useful where someone is out of the country and unable to deal with their affairs in the UK; an attorney can be appointed to deal with their affairs whilst they are away.
There are 2 types of Lasting Power of Attorney: Property & Financial Affairs LPA gives your

THE LOST HALLS OF WORSLEY
W
orsley in the 19th and early 20th centuries was a popular social destination for our own royalty and also for the crowned heads of Europe. The local aristocracy, initially the “Canal Duke”, the Duke of Bridgewater and later his heirs, the Egerton family the Earls of Ellesmere, entertained the highest in the land - such was their wealth and prestige, from their ownership of the coal mines, Canal and vast acreages of land. The initial wealth was built by the Duke with his ambitious development of his assets. His original inheritance of Worsley Old Hall as a residence was considered too small and outdated so in 1759, around the time that his famous canal was built, the Duke ordered the construction of “The Brick Hall” - an elegant 3 storey building in the new “Georgian” style, facing south overlooking the canal, in what is now the site of RHS Bridgewater.
The Duke had just a suite of rooms at the new Hall for when he visited Worsley and described the Hall as his “Steward’s house”. John Gilbert, who administered the Worsley estates, was installed there. In 1833, the Hall and its estates were inherited by a distant relation, Lord Francis Egerton. He took up residence here in 1837 and soon decided both the Old Hall and Brick Hall lacked the grandeur befitting his position and commissioned the famous architect Sir Edward Blore to design a new hall that would celebrate the fashionable Victorian Gothic style and provide hospitality to the great and the good. Completed in 1846, the New Hall was almost seven years in the making. It was a vast four-storey mansion garnished with pinnacles, turrets and towers and surrounded by stables and outbuildings over a spacious levelled area. The Brick Hall was then demolished. The interior of the New Hall was as grand as its exterior. Adorned by the work of fashionable artists of the day, 24 ON OUR DOORSTEP
the finest wood carvings and fittings garnered from other stately homes of much longer lineage. Built on the highest point of land south of Leigh Road, the Hall was approached by a choice of three drives. One of the glories of the Hall, were its gardens that swept down from the terrace and sloped down to a beautiful lake, complete with an island and romantic “folly” causeway. So grand was the Hall and so respected the owners for their hospitality, it enjoyed many eminent visitors: • Queen Victoria visited in 1851 and 1857 • The Prince and Princess of Wales in 1869 and again in 1909 as King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. • The Crown Prince of Germany and Empress Eugenie were also guests. In 1914, at the outbreak of war, the Hall was offered to the army and used as a hospital for officers. The Egerton/Ellesmere family left the area permanently and severed the aristocratic link with Worsley. The Fourth Earl sold the estates in 1923 to the newlyformed Bridgewater Estates Limited for £3.3m. In the following years the new owners attempted to sell the Hall, but without success. In the Second World War, used again by the military, providing temporary quarters for evacuees from Dunkirk, then as a home for the 218th Battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers until 1942. In 1943, the top floor was damaged by fire after which it was used to billet American soldiers awaiting the D-Day landings. Those were the last occupants as, riddled with dry rot and undermined by subsidence, it was condemned to demolition. It was sold for a mere £2,500 to a Mr Littler, a scrap merchant, who began demolition in 1946 and completed it in 1949. What became of its precious wood carvings and other riches is not known. The building itself was razed to the ground. Taken from an article written by John Kirwin (2011)

ALLOTMENTS: FROM SPRING TO SUMMER by Geoff Hamilton, Macmillan Cancer Support Volunteer
Whilst the pandemic has been such a total nightmare, there have been some bonuses and not least on the allotment. With very few volunteers, due to the lockdowns, we were unable to carry out the winter pruning of our fruit trees. However, this spring we have been rewarded with the most spectacular display of blossom and the insects love it! We may even get a bumper fruit crop, who knows? The birdsong is better than ever and the birds are less nervous of us. We even have 2 hunting Buzzards visiting, soaring way above the plot. A neighbour has donated 2 Marsh Marigolds for our re-furbished pond, they have both blossomed for us to enjoy and we can now watch the tadpoles growing and swimming around them. Another has given us a huge, potted bamboo which sits very nicely next to our ‘tea and biscuit’ corner. There is an initiative to plant Sunflowers, in memory of those who have died due to the pandemic, all across the City which is being co-ordinated by one of our neighbouring plotholders. We already have 41 sunflower plants ready to plant out and Don Booth, chairman of the Salford Allotment Federation has been offered, by Kings’ Seeds, a donation of 22,000 sunflower seeds for distribution across the City’s allotments. He will be distributing them through the Salford Allotment Federation (SAF) and we hope for a fabulous summer display. Plots around Salford Salford Council and SAF held a meeting in April to discuss allotment provision in the City and to see which new sites can be considered. Applications to rent plots has risen during the pandemic and many more residents realise the mental and physical
benefits of working in the open-air to grow crops for their own satisfaction and consumption. If you would like more information on any of the following sites, please contact the City Council’s Allotment Officer or register your interest on the Council’s website. Beechfield, Swinton: It will be some time before these allotments will be in use. Finance in is place and the layout is under discussion, but work cannot start until all parties have agreed the programme. Contamination is still an issue to be resolved. Blackleach, Walkden: A spectacular effort by the proposed committee has transformed this derelict site into a blank canvas ready for remodelling. Community Payback have worked with the group and talks to establish a ‘self-management’ agreement are underway with the Council. Weaste, Salford: The committee is in discussion with the CVS to try and secure funding for the proposed extension of the site and Don Booth is hoping to see early progress to provide additional facilities. Buile Hill: hosted a visit by the committee of the SAF to show the work and facilities which have been provided by Mark Frith, the project leader and his volunteers with the help and assistance of the ‘friends of Buille Hill Park. The cafe is subject to COVID limitations but, is open and a very welcoming spot in the beautiful surroundings. Ordsall, Salford: The site is being reviewed with help from the CVS and consideration of its future operation and committee arrangements will be resolved at the earliest opportunity. Several potential new sites are under discussion with the City Council who are very supportive of the SAF and allotments. Any questions, enquiries or comments can be referred to their Allotment Officer, via the Councils’ website. ON OUR DOORSTEP 27

The Power of Customer Reviews and Testimonials Marketing and advertising have come a long way in a short space of time. As a business owner, your brand reputation is no longer entirely in your hands. Like it or not, people are no longer in the habit of only taking your word for it when considering buying your product or service. 82% of people look at online reviews before making a purchase (rising to 93% in the 35 to 54 age group) and they read an average of 10 online reviews for each purchase [source: brightlocal.com]. Statistics for 2020 aren’t available yet, but the word is that with the surge in demand for online shopping driven by the pandemic, those numbers will climb even higher. This means that customer testimonials are now a powerful marketing tool in an increasingly crowded marketplace. Real positive feedback, stories about user experience, and emotional reactions to using your products create confidence in a purchase decision. This is sometimes referred to as “social proof” and it should be a vital part of your marketing strategy. Where to Publish Customer Reviews Once the sole province of Amazon, there are now plenty of free platforms where you can encourage your customers to write reviews independently of your own marketing channels. By using these platforms, you can give your customers the confidence that their words won’t be edited, abridged or otherwise modified by you in any way.
Google My Business: If you haven’t already you should claim your free Google My Business listing. It provides a shortcut to a review page with a link you can share with customers. www.google.com/business Trustpilot: Anyone can use Trustpilot to give feedback on any business, so if your business has been reviewed here then you can add the average star rating to your marketing channels via a link uk.trustpilot.com Facebook: If you have a Facebook business page WWW.ONOURDOORSTEP.CO.UK
then you can add “Facebook Recommendations” to your profile. Rather than leave a star rating, your customers can simply answer “Yes” or “No” to the question “Do you recommend (business name)?” and then add tags, photos, and text. facebook.com
TripAdvisor: If you’re in the hospitality or travel business then (like Trustpilot) anyone can use TripAdvisor to give feedback on any business. Also you can request to be listed on the platform directly. tripadvisor.com/Owners Getting your Customers to Leave Feedback - Some Do’s and Don’ts!
DO ask them – and don’t be shy! Add a request for feedback as part of your after sales process and let them know how important it is and how much you value their views. DO make it easy. We’ve seen a lot of commentary on social media from consumers being overwhelmed with feedback requests, so the less painful you can make the process the more your customers will be encouraged to respond. Provide a link to your chosen platform, or a use dedicated reply email address. DO reply to all feedback, positive and negative (all the above platforms will allow you to do this). It lets your customers know that you have seen the review and appreciate it. DON’T offer a discount or a refund for a good review. It’s OK to incentivise people to give feedback but if you only do it for a favourable response then it becomes unethical. DON’T suggest what they should say. Ask specific questions by all means but don’t put pressure on them to answer only positively. Trust is a key factor in business these days, and the display of an average star rating is often the first thing your potential customers will notice. So make sure you’re using a feedback process in all of your customer interactions. Written by Helen Say (www.cblservices.co.uk) Freelancecwriter and Blogger
