Welcome I’m sure like us, you miss the beautiful warm sunshine and dry weather...but Autumn can be a great season too.

Being lucky enough to have a wealth of Country Parks and woodlands on our doorstep, what better than to wrap up warm and go for a session of “kicking leaves” with the kids, dogs or even by yourselves! Kids love going out whatever the weather. It’s a shame we adults aren’t always as keen!

Autumn also brings lots of Halloween and Bonfire events to the area, and the start of the Christmas fairs. All ideal opportunities for more family and community fun.

Many of our readers have been missing the local history features, so they are making a come-back this issue with a double page feature on St Mark’s Church, Worsley!

The RSPCA Manchester and Salford Branch is celebrating its 50th year as an official charity on 23rd December. To mark the occasion two very special events are taking place in Salford.

On Saturday 12th October the Imperial War Museum Zipslide challenge takes place. Fifty participants will travel at a thrilling speed across the ship canal and land outside the Lowry theatre.

It’s certainly not for the faint hearted but will be the ride of a life time! To sign up it will cost £25 and a pledge to raise £75 in sponsorship money.

Purrfect Party 3 is an annual evening event with live entertainment and a vegetarian, hot supper buffet. In its third year, it is the official birthday party for the charity.

Both events will help raise much needed money for the charity, which costs £913 a day to run. The charity takes in the animals rescued by the national RSPCA inspectorate, rehabilitates them and finds them new homes. Last year 411 animals were rehomed.

THE WORSLEY WOODS ACTION GROUP The Worsley Woods Action Group (WWAG) was formed in 2005 by a small group of local residents who cared about the woodlands.

They work hand in hand with the Salford Rangers, whose help has been invaluable.

With the Rangers they have organised the volunteer helpers who have carried out hours of work on many projects, including rhododendron cutting, path clearance, litter picking, bench building, Himalayan Balsam bashing, repairing of steps, stream clearing and much more!

Some of the improvements the WWAG and Salford Rangers have made over the last few years include:- several wild flower wooden carvings, two new bridges near the Stepping Stones, path improvements, brook clearances, erection of notice boards and the control of Japanese Knotweed. Fifty Cherry and fifty Rowan trees and many plants and wild flowers have been planted and the installation of the amazing children’s adventure play area!

Head into Worsley Woods and you can see the current project at Old Warke Dam underway. The dam is being cleared and opened up, a viewing jetty will be built and improvements are being made to the footpaths. Securing the funding

Worsley Old Hall set to become A new Foodie Freehouse Pub Worsley Old Hall is a remarkable listed building, parts of which date from the 16th century. It has been running as a restaurant since the 1990s and traded until August 2013 as a Brewers Fayre.

The Hall has now been taken over by upmarket Chester-based pub company, Brunning and Price, who have signed a 30-year lease with Peel and are planning a substantial investment to give the building a new lease of life.

MD Graham Price said, ”Worsley Old Hall is an important building, and needs sympathetic restoration to bring it back to its former glory.

Many later additions to the property have covered up interesting original features, but we intend to strip these away and reveal more of the historic character of the Hall.”

Brunning and Price have two other historic Halls in their estate: Grade I listed Sandbach Old Hall and Grade II listed Sutton Hall, both of which had

been on English Heritage’s ‘Buildings at Risk’ register before being rescued.

“There will be a plenty of cosy, intimate dining rooms and alcoves, with open fires, bookcases and lots of honest old furniture.”, continued Graham.

“What you won’t find is televisions, gaming machines, pool tables or intrusive music. We are creating a substantial bar at the heart of the building with some ten cask beers on tap, a back shelf crammed with Malts and a decent but carefully chosen wine list.”

“Like our other historic properties,” continued Graham, “Worsley Old Hall will first and foremost be a pub, with genuinely foodie credentials. It’s sister pubs have been awarded ‘County Dining Pub of the Year’ on over 33 occasions by the Good Pub Guide, and hopefully before long Worsley Old Hall will be up there amongst the very best of them.”

Outside will feature extensive terraces and landscaped lawns. If it all goes to plan, Worsley Old Hall hopes to reopen before the end of the year.

LIGHT IN A DARK PLACE “A God-forgotten place, its inhabitants much addicted to drink and rude sports, their morals deplorably low”.

This was Worsley in 1833, as described by Lord Francis Leveson-Gower who had inherited it with its coal mines, industry and canal, as beneficiary of the Bridgewater Trust.

The Trust had been formed as the legacy of his illustrious kinsman, the “Canal Duke” of Bridgewater.

Conditional with the inheritance was a requirement for Francis to change his name to Egerton, the surname of his benefactor. Lord Francis was a younger son of the 1st Duke of Sutherland, the descendants of whom still own vast estates in Scotland. However, the wild and beautiful lands of his youth did not compare with his new possessions, for Worsley was a desolate place, choked with the smoke of its factories (once sited on Worsley Green) and busy with congested traffic of barges on the canal, ferrying newlymined coal from the Delph to Manchester.

An Aristocrat with a Social Conscience Beauty was a stranger to Worsley, but wealth flowed from it in plenty and Lord Francis was determined to use it to improve the lot of those who worked for him.

This man was something of a rarity for his time – an aristocrat with a social conscience, virtues shared by his wife lady Harriet. As his starting point he resolved that his family would live in this “God-forgotten place” rather than be absentee landlords enjoying the fruits of others’ labour in pleasanter climes. Firstly he built his home, the New Hall in Middlewood, then he focussed on the spiritual and educational needs of the inhabitants of his estates, intending they should have nothing but the best.

The Birth of St. Mark’s At that time only two small chapels existed in 20 ON OUR DOORSTEP

the district and virtually no schools. Choosing a site for his intended church (and its school) was however, easy. A religious site already existed on Worsley Brow where a field had previously held a cross, perhaps from medieval times, known as “Our Lady’s Cross”. Long gone, but it had given its name to the field, as Cross Field (still commemorated by Crossfield Drive).

On this site would be a church to be proud of, and to design it Lord Francis commissioned a young architect who would go on to design no less than 470 churches, achieve great fame and be the patriarch of a family of architects who still exist today. They would create such buildings as St. Pancras Station, Battersea Power Station (now the Tate Modern) and Liverpool Anglican Cathedral. This man was Sir George Gilbert Scott, prominent in the Victorian renaissance that expressed itself in the great Gothic Revival.

Inspired by the Oxford Movement, this group sought to take the Anglican church back to its medieval roots of spirituality in church architecture, with 13th century inspiration. St. Mark’s, as the new church was to be dedicated, was to be one of the finest examples of the “Decorated Period“, the most ornate of Gothic forms.

Its architect achieved such great fame in his lifetime that when he died, in 1878, he was interred in Westminster Abbey – an honour given to no other architect, before or since.

The Foundation Stone of St. Mark’s was laid in 1844 by George Granville Francis, eldest son of Lord Egerton, on his 21st birthday and the church was completed on time in 1846. In that same completion week, Lord Francis was created Earl of Ellesmere and Viscount Brackley.

Many embellishments have taken place in the church over succeeding years but its basic form is regarded as one of the purest examples of the Decorated Gothic style - and by Scott’s famous grandson (creator of Liverpool Cathedral) as his grandparent’s finest work of art.

hammer beam oak roof capped by the famed slate from the Delabole Quarry in Cornwall and the fixed pews are oak. Originally, the church was built with a south aisle only, but a north aisle was added six years later and the double line of columns flanking the Nave are capped with beautifully carved foliage.

Though the family finally left the area, having disposed of all their holdings in 1923, they continued with their interest until relatively recent times by way of donations. Their descendant is the present Duke of Sutherland, who also has the title of Earl of Ellesmere.

windows. Scott, the architect, toured the Continent in search of suitable period pieces to decorate St. Mark’s and acquired a collection of twelve windows which depict various saints.

The windows are of French, German, Belgian, Italian and English origin. Further windows depict Faith and Charity, yet others show Fortitude and Humility.

FONT: Is of limestone and contains a bronze basin. It is elaborately carved and has the famous words of Jesus:“Suffer little children to come unto me and forbid them not, for such is the kingdom of heaven”.

LECTERN: Carved in oak with a figure of St. Mark and his symbol, a winged lion.

CHANCEL: Entered by white carrara marble steps, is paved with fleur de lys and hawthorn sprays, bordered by trefoil and thistle sprays.

The choir stalls are of oak, fronted by carvings of St. David and St. Cecilia and decorated with details of Christ’s passion.

THE SANCTUARY: Inside is the “Reredos”, a beautiful piece of Italian craftsmanship rendered in alabaster, inlaid with colourful marbles and mosaics. Its nine panels depict angels, scrolls, censors, a mother and child, a virgin and flower and a central blessing. It is a memorial to Catherine, Countess of Ellesmere, who died in 1866.

THE ELLESMERE CHAPEL and its tomb of Francis Egerton, the Patron of the church, also has many memorials of his descendants, some of whom are entombed in the Vault beneath.

Originally the family chapel, it is now the final resting place for those who gave so much back to the area in which their wealth was founded.

WINDOWS: The many superb stained glass

BELL TOWER: The crowning glories of St. Mark’s are its Bell Tower, the set of ten bells and its famous clock. The Bell Tower ringing chamber is reached by an anti-clockwise flight of stone steps to a considerable height. The impressive bells are hung in the tower above.

The Bell tower also houses the winding mechanism for the Clock which can be seen on the west face of the tower. This is the unique instrument known as the “Bridgewater Clock” which strikes 13 at one o’clock! Devised many years prior by the canny Duke of Bridgewater as his factory workers at Worsley Yard claimed their lateness in returning to work from lunch was due to not being able to hear a single strike of the clock at one. The clock returned to Worsley as a gift from the Earl of Ellesmere on the Centenary of St. Mark’s in 1946 and was installed in the church.

The panel is prepped to ensure complete cleanliness and the damaged area is rubbed with an abrasive to remove any protruding rough spots and minor scratching.

The rear wheel is covered to ensure it is protected from any dust or mess.

Once the area has cooled down the lacquer is then cut using a fine abrasive.

This removes any texture or imperfections in the lacquer and creates a flat surface. The repair is the polished and buffed to a brilliant, smooth shine. All masking is then removed.
