Welcome This issue we focus on the local community with a special feature with Ryan Giggs about living local, news of major investment in our recreational facilties and helping to create awareness for local charities. For parents thinking about Secondary Schools and Colleges, there are details about local schools and college open days. With the children all back at school, we seem to be rapidly heading towards the festive season. Promoting for Christmas has begun! There are many local charities needing our support leading up to Christmas, so please take a few minutes to read our charity articles to see if you can help. We have a special history feature on Ordsall Hall, written by our regular contributor John Kirwin. If you haven’t visited the Hall since its renovation, it is definitely worth a trip. It’s very child friendly with lots of open space for a run around too!

CRAIG MCNEIL: An Inspirational Young Individual aiming for the Olympics So you’re 17... School? Friends? Going out? How about getting up at 4.30am every day to train for 2½ hours before you go to school, then coming home to train more in the evening?

from his ambition. As a member of Swim Trafford, he is beginning to compete at a National level. Recently, Craig took part in the Great Manchester Swim and came a staggering 35th out of c.3,500 swimmers. He also finished 7th in the Great North Swim in Windermere. His cycling achievements are also incredible; completing the Manchester Cycle - 52 miles in 1 hour 45 minutes.

This is the routine that young para-triathlete Craig McNeil puts himself through every day in his determined dream to compete, eventually at an Olympic level. Add to this the fact that Craig battles with adversity every day.

Craig cannot get to the Olympics alone; he needs support and help to make his dreams come true. The Rotary Club of Manchester Trailblazers have taken on the task of supporting and sponsoring Craig on his journey.

Craig was born with a condition called Talipes, a deformity of the feet, which resulted in corrective operations as a baby, impaired physical development and difficulty with flexibility and movement. His condition makes training and competing extremely difficult, especially when running or using a bike.

Business woman and Company Director, Marie Burgess from local Worsley company Tribune AVS Ltd, has made this her vocation through her role as a Rotarian to support and raise Craig’s profile.

However, none of this hinders Craig or deters him

Thank You ! Victoria and family would like to say a huge thank you to all her clients for the best wishes and generosity they have shown on the arrival of her twins Bridgitte and Joseph. We hope to be seeing you all in the salon soon.

salfordautism Led and run by Autistic People for Autistic people salfordautism is a new organisation working with Salford City Council to support anyone, living or working in the city, who is, cares for or is affected by someone with an Autistic Spectrum Condition (incl. Aspergers) Whether there is a formal diagnosis or not, we offer a range of services to support individuals in living the life they choose the way they choose to, including general advocacy matters, getting a diagnosis or social care assessment, planning their care and finding suitable service providers. Our help/advice/contact line is open 24/7, including holidays, and will connect to a real person within 30 seconds, without any numbered options, or take a message that we will respond to in minutes rather than hours, if we're all busy.

We also offer awareness training to professionals and organisations who may come into contact with autistic people (just about any public-facing service or business) and will soon be offering an audit / approval system for those wishing to show they have taken the time to care. Key to our operation is that we are led and run by people with a diagnosis of autism, so we know the territory well - we live it every day. If you are someone affected by autism, or know someone who is, call us. We can help. Call us on 0845 652 0256 (1p/min day, 0.5p/min night, from std BT line, open 24/7)

Help Local Families this Christmas Christmas is a time most of us look forward to – but for families living in poverty it is a difficult and stressful time of year. Wood Street Mission helps thousands of families in need at Christmas by giving them toys so children have presents to open on Christmas Day and food hampers to offset the cost of the season. Help us give local families a happy Christmas this year by donating money, new toys or nonperishable food items to our Christmas Appeal. Go to www.woodstreetmission.org.uk for details or call 0161 834 3140 to arrange a collection from your doorstep.

Ryan Giggs: Living Local Born in Cardiff, Ryan moved to Salford at the age of 7 and by 14 had signed for Manchester United. After an illustrious career playing football, he is now Assistant Manager at Manchester United and co-owner of George’s, Worsley. Which local team did you first start playing for and at what age were you scouted? I grew up in Pendlebury, Swinton and attended school at Grosvenor Road. I started playing for Deans when I was 10 or 11, having been scouted by Dennis Schofield (at the age of 8), when he was driving past the school one day on his milk float after work! If you weren’t a footballer, what would you be? I would have been a P.E. teacher. I love all sports, and now I'm a coach, I am really enjoying helping young players develop whilst passing on all my experiences. What is your favourite dish and drink at George's? I have many favourite dishes and drinks at George’s, but if I had to pick one, now that I've retired I can enjoy the George's Burger

and a glass of Paddock, the house red, without worrying too much about putting on weight! What do you most love about living in Worsley ? I love living in Worsley because it has always been so close to everything: Manchester city centre, the airport, the Trafford Centre and, of course, Old Trafford. I also love how picturesque it is with Worsley Green and Roe Green. Being a keen golfer we also have access to great golf courses; I am a member of Worsley Golf Course and also sometimes play at The Marriott.

Mission Christmas 2014 1 in 3 children are living in severe poverty in Greater Manchester. 1 in 3 children on our doorstep go to bed without a hot meal in a house without central heating. This means that as Christmas approaches, 150,000 children in our City will not have a present to open on Christmas Day. Key 103’s Cash for Kids Mission Christmas looks to brighten Christmas for these children by asking you to buy an extra present when doing your Christmas shopping. Last year, Manchester took the appeal by storm as 1,417 businesses and schools across the city signed up to support our campaign.

We smashed our target to raise £1m worth of toys and delivered presents to over 32,000 children across Manchester. The support and generosity of the people of Manchester was overwhelming, and we are asking for your help again this year. The statistics are still standing. We are even more determined to help local children and ensure as many children as possible in Manchester wake up to a present this Christmas. Mission Christmas will NOT change the poverty statistics for our city BUT Mission Christmas WILL make a difference to these families on Christmas Day.

CHILDREN’S TEETH ARE IMPORTANT If children’s teeth have to be taken out while a child is growing the remaining teeth can come through in the wrong place. Take your children to the dentist from an early age and get the advice that you may need.

TEETH WHITENING It is now illegal for anyone other than a dentist to provide teeth whitening. This is to protect the public from the use of damaging chemicals and only a dentist can tell you if your teeth are suitable for any particular whitening technique.

POOR GUM HEALTH IS LINKED TO HEART DISEASE If you suffer from bad breath or get bleeding when you brush, it is time to get checked out at your dentist and see a hygienist.

At Monton Green Dental Practice we have experienced dentists and hygienists plus a specialist orthodontist, implant dentist and children’s club to offer a comprehensive, prevention based service.

MOUTH CANCER Cases of mouth cancer are growing but treatment is improving. Early detection by a careful examination at your dentist can save you extensive surgery or even your life.

SOFT AND ROMANTIC Proposals Bridalwear of Swinton share their insight into one of the hottest trends for 2015

Here at Proposals we pride ourselves at being right on trend with what’s happening in the wedding market. We have been in the business for 20 years and have seen most trends come and go. So what’s big for 2015? Well, pastels are back in a big way along with the vintage look - so brides in lace and bridesmaids in soft chiffons with vintage details of beads and pearls, or a touch of lace carries over from the bride. The main thing is the flowing lines - brides are wanting to keep it soft and romantic. There will always be room for your traditional satin wedding gown. Whatever your preference, here at Proposals we aim to produce just the right look for your individual wedding. Romantica of Devon 2015 nza, tie-back Olympia: Ivory or White, orga

LLEYTON’S CHRISTMAS PARTY 2014 Niemann Pick Disease Group (UK) Annual Children’s Party

Gayle with Coleen at last year’s party Last year, Pride in Lleyton Appeal organised the annual Niemann-Pick UK Christmas Party at Swinton Park. It was star-studded event with Coleen Nolan and Chelsee Healey supporting the day, and help from many local businesses. Led by chief organiser Gayle Gamble, it was such a success that the NPDG(UK) have thrown tradition out of the window (a different venue every year) and have asked them to hold it here in the Northwest again this year. The date is set for Saturday 6th December at Swinton Park Golf Club, 10.00am to 4.00pm for 60 children from 18 months to 21 years of age who suffer from Niemann-Pick disease.

Gayle is already getting things organised but needs help from local businesses with:n Photography/Videography to help make as many memories as possible n Goodie Bags – Boys & Girls n Character Appearances n Selection Boxes n Face painting / glitter tattoos artists n A good rate on local accommodation for the children travelling to Manchester n A good deal from a local restaurant as some may travel the night before n Individual children’s presents (ask for list) n Room Decoration Or anything else you think they may need! A Facelift for

Boothsbank Park In August 2013 the Worsley and Boothstown Neighbourhood Management team announced that £400k had been made available by Salford City Council for a much needed upgrade to Boothsbank Park in Boothstown. Since then consultations have taken place. With the help of the ward Councillors, local residents, bowling club members and newly formed group “Friends of Boothsbank Park”, proposed plans for the park were submitted. On 3rd April 2014, the plans were approved and last month (August) tenders for the works were invited. The Council’s Procurement Board are due to appoint the winning contractor shortly. Work will hopefully start this Autumn with completion in Spring 2015. Highlights of the plans include:n Replace one tennis court with a multi-use games court for five a-side football, basketball, netball and tennis. n Refurbish and upgrade of both children's play areas with new climbing equipment, swings, teacup twisters, zipwire etc.. n Replace the bowling green clubhouse with a new Bowling Pavillion and Community room. n Construct new footpaths to link the play area with the rest of the park n Landscaping improvements and new benches

34 ON OUR DOORSTEP

A new "Friends of Boothsbank Park" (FOBP) group has recently been established to ensure that the park is a true community resource and that the park is attractive and welcoming. FOBP are volunteers who are residents and members of the bowling green. The group now have at least 20 members and hope to attract more in the near future. The group understand the pressure Salford Council is under to keep services whilst their budget is constantly being reduced, but want ensure the park is maintained and the community can enjoy the park for many years to come. One aim of FOBP is to achieve the ‘Green flag award’, a mark of excellence for the best green spaces in the country. To ensure the park is kept clean, tidy and in bloom they plan to run clean ups and gardening events which will encourage the community to get involved and give them the opportunity to learn new skills along the way. Other activities planned for the future include a bulb planting day, a launch of the new park and other community events. Follow FOBP on Facebook ‘Friends of Boothsbank Park’ and on Twitter @BoothsbankPark.

GREAT THINGS TO DO ALONG THE BRIDGEWATER CANAL Salford’s historic Bridgewater Canal is being transformed along the five miles from Barton to Boothstown with over £5.5 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Salford City Council, Peel Holdings and other partners. The physical transformation of key heritage sites, including Worsley Delph and the remains of Barton Aqueduct, will start in 2015, however there are already lots of opportunities for local people to come along and find out what the Bridgewater Canal has to offer. Activities include Bat Walks, Fungi Forays and Roses and Castles art workshops, as well as regular health walks, bike rides and buggy walks. Find out more at www.salford.gov.uk/bcc

Duke’s Drive Country Park in Monton is a new visitor hub for the canal, with lots of new trails and walks and easy access to the canal towpath. A short walk from regular bus services stopping at Monton Green, and with over 50 new parking spaces conveniently located off Parrin Lane, the transformation of Duke’s Drive means it has never been easier to visit the Bridgewater Canal. Be actively involved in the transformation of the Canal. Becoming a Bridgewater Volunteer offers many opportunities to work outdoors on projects, get some exercise, learn new skills and meet new people as part of a great team. Find out more and contact Jill on 07872 808003 or email bridgewatercanal@salford.gov.uk (Images courtesy of Salford Council / Nick Harrison)

Ordsall Hall “Please to remember the 5th of November, Gunpowder, Treason and Plot” So goes the rhyme about the infamous plot to blow up Parliament in 1605, with barrels of gunpowder secreted in the cellars of Westminster, by Guy Fawkes. Fawkes was a Catholic and one of a gro u p of dis affe cte d aris to cracy aggrieved by the Reformation which had supplanted their faith. The aim was to destroy not only Parliament and all its Members, but also King James I, who had succeeded Elizabeth to the throne. Where was this dastardly deed suspected to have been planned by its chief conspirator Robert Catesby and others? Where else but Ordsall Hall, the home of the Radclyffe family, also devout Catholics, and friends of Catesby? The local legend was given more substance in 1842 by Harrison Ainsworth in his novel about the event “Guy Fawkes”. In this he writes that Fawkes, in his escape after the Plot was foiled, used a tunnel which led from Ordsall Hall, under the Irwell River, to an inn close to Manchester Collegiate Church (the present Cathedral). There is some evidence that a tunnel once existed….but for what purpose it was built is a mystery. It’s worth remembering though that “Bonfire Night” and its attendant festivities, not least the burning of Fawkes in effigy, may well have had its beginnings in this old building on the banks of what is now the Manchester Ship Canal. Whatever the truth of this matter, Ordsall Hall certainly has a lot more history in its timbers, bricks and stones.

The Hall and The Radclyffes To begin with it is one of the oldest building sites in Salford, indeed in Greater Manchester. The earliest record of a settlement on the site dates from 1177 when “Ordeshala” paid 2 marks in feudal tax.

In 1251 the Manor was owned by a David de Hulton and in 1335 it passed to the Radclyffe family, who came from Bury (a place now known as Radcliffe). It was to remain with this prominent family for over 300 years. The Ordsall estate consisted of 164 acres of land situated on a wide bend of the Irwell, what is all now Salford Quays. Local History

In 1354 Sir John Radclyffe, a prominent knight in the service of King Edward III in the wars against the French, took possession of the Hall. To commemorate the three battles in which he had distinguished himself, the King gave him the right to use “Caen, Crecy, Calais” as the family motto. As part of his reward for service the King permitted him to take a group of Flemish weavers home to his estate. It seems Sir John was not only a valiant soldier, but also a shrewd businessman! A seemingly trivial favour was to become the foundation stone for the textile industry in Lancashire. In the 15th century the Hall was principally a building built with a timber frame of oak, infilled by “wattle and daub”, on a sandstone foundation. Although not a fortified house, there was a moat surrounding the building. Bricks not being in general use at the time, the infill consisted of willow stems plastered with mud, straw, cattle dung and anything else which came to hand, then lime-washed. The Radclyffes were a remarkably fecund and successful family. They married into all the local gentry so that they shared relations with the de Traffords (who lived just across the Irwell), the Breretons of Worsley and the Booths of Barton. However, despite earlier good relations, a feud developed with the Booths whose land bordered their own. This culminated, in 1444, with an incident between the two families that led to tragedy. Several Radclyffe brothers and their friends were hunting in the Weaste Forest in a part known as Little Bolton. This was a hamlet known as late as the 19th century, where Ladywell Hospital used to stand until just a few years ago. They were confronted by a group of Booths and their retainers who disputed their right to hunt in the area and a fight broke out. In those days it would have been fought with swords, knives and even arrows - rather more aggressive than a modern gang fracas - and the results more drastic. Two of the Radclyffes were killed and a Booth also. A subsequent legal case

however, found all participants acquitted of any crime, a curious result for 3 deaths and probably some nasty wounds… Such was the resilience of the times though, that two generations later the families were yet again marrying each other. In 1512 Sir Alexander Radclyffe, then head of the family, on becoming High Sheriff of Lancashire decided to make Ordsall Hall much grander. He had the old Great Hall demolished and built a new one (which exists to the present day). Away went the earthen floors of accumulated straw and 200 years of filth and the “Star Chamber” (so called because of its star-shaped lead ceiling bosses) was also added. The Hall grew further, in 1639, when his namesake, another Sir Alexander added another brick wing. Sadly his timing for such ambitious spending was to prove a little rash, for the Civil War was soon to break out. This pitted Parliament against King James II and Sir Alexander, as a Royalist, backed the wrong horse. He was imprisoned for the duration and, on release, found himself in hard financial straits. When he died his son John had to sell the Hall and end his family’s long association with it. However, reputably one Radclyffe still remains in residence. The “White Lady”, said to be Margaret Radclyffe who was a favourite Lady in Waiting to Queen Elizabeth I, “died of a broken heart” when her twin brother drowned at sea. Since 1599 she is said to haunt the Great Hall and the Star Chamber. In 2004 a TV series which investigated famous hauntings, made her the subject of one programme. Since then webcams have been installed by Salford City Council in the hope she will seek further stardom! The past 300+ years have seen the Hall with many additions, interesting residents and uses but, after a major restoration recently, it is now a civic attraction and eminently worth a visit.
