BRIDGEWATER SCHOOL

MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE As your child draws to the end of their primary school education you are faced with a range of choices. You’ll no doubt want your child educating across a broad number of subjects to achieve the best results that they are capable of, whilst enjoying themselves as they grow up and develop their own sense of self to go out into this world as an individual. Please take your time to think about the time your child will spend in school and how you would like them to turn out at the end of their schooling. Ideally you’ll want your child brought up in a safe, family environment that matches your values, where they are known personally throughout their schooling from their early years to adulthood, and to entering their chosen profession or University.

We could say that we would provide that and more for you and your child. It would be better still to let you hear what the last ISA school inspection report said of Bridgewater School. They said that pupils’ personal development is outstanding, and that the school is highly successful in its aim to develop pupils’ spiritual, moral and cultural understanding. Pupils are confident, articulate and sensitive to each other’s needs. The Chief Executive Officer of the Independent Schools Association went on to say “I think that what Bridgewater does so wonderfully is sow a seed inside each and every pupil that will grow into something very special.” Please feel free to contact the school to arrange an appointment with the Head and a tour of the school. For information the date of our Entrance Examination is Friday, 29th January 2016.

She said: “I couldn’t believe it when I opened my results I got 4 Cs in my AS Levels so it’s a massive improvement on last year!”

GEORGIA’S UPDATE G-FESTIVAL back in May was yet another huge success. Despite heavy rain at the start of the day the event was attended by over 3,000 people including special guest Shaun Ryder of the Happy Mondays, and raising over £22K for children in need both at home and overseas. Georgia's House 3, a school in a remote village in Cambodia is now up and running for 100 children with the building, uniforms, stationary, school meals and teachers paid for by Georgia's Children. September will see the opening of Georgia's House 4, a learning centre for desperate children in Transylvania, Romania in Partnership with Love Light Romania. Locally, we’ve supplied over 250 uniforms to underprivileged schools in partnership with Salford City Council... But our most ambitious and poignant project to date will be to bring

Georgia's House 5 home to Salford on 12th November, 2015 to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the day we lost our shining star, Georgia Murray in her 3rd open heart operation. "Georgia's House 5" is the new expansion of The Life Centre on Langworthy Road; an existing community hub looking to support even more local children and their families with Georgia's Children. To achieve this dream and to cover running costs, we will need regular monthly income. If you can help by donating £5 or £10 pm, knowing 100% of your donation will go directly to this worthy cause, please go to www.justgiving.com/gcotw. Your support is always appreciated. We also hope to release a song by local singer Jennifer Rice called "Carry Me Home" on iTunes to raise funds. For updates follow us on Facebook Thank You ! xxx ...Driven by Love, Guided by Angels

Tea Party Hosts Required! National Charity Calls On Tea Party Hosts To Help Transform The Lives Of Older People With many older people in Eccles and Monton suffering from loneliness, Contact the Elderly, the UK charity dedicated to tackling isolation among people aged 75 and over, is urgently appealing for anyone who is the ‘hostess with the mostess’ to welcome a small group of people into their home for a tea party, just one or two afternoons a year.

Contact the Elderly’s North West Development Officer, Gwen Lightfoot, said: “We’re committed to offering a lifeline of friendship to the oldest and loneliest people, but this lifeline in Eccles and Monton is currently under threat due to a real shortage of volunteer hosts in the area. Our volunteers genuinely get as much out of the experience as our older guests, so anyone who is interested in giving something back to their community to please get in touch with us now”.

The charity aims to relieve the acute loneliness experienced by older people who live alone by organising free monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups. Each older guest is taken to the volunteer host’s home by a volunteer driver, where they join a small group for tea, chat and companionship for a couple of hours.

Being a host requires a commitment of just a couple of hours, once or twice a year. Anyone who has a downstairs toilet, easy access to their home and a good sized teapot is eligible. Eccles & Monton residents interested in becoming a host can contact Gwen 01925 728969 or

NEW TIMES at ROE GREEN Those who have visited Roe Green in the past will be surprised to see a new addition on the front of the Church. There is now a brand new electric clock. This has been provided by the friends and family of long time Roe Greener Connie Duffy, who passed away last year in her 90’s. The local group, Friends of Roe Green, wanted to mark Connie’s contribution to the life of the Village. She was President of the Friends for many years. Connie who lived on the Green for over 50 years took a keen interest in what went on in the village and attended Roe Green Church when she was mobile enough to walk across the Green. Pauline Ogden, Committee Member of Friends of Roe Green, had the idea of something permanent to mark Connie’s life and the village has never had a clock, until now.

Two other Church Members also have been honoured by the Friends; Bert Tyldesley MBE, former Church Treasurer and local historian, has a metal bench in the local park in his memory and Alan Taylor, a former Church President, who died last year aged 87, has a bench on the Green in front of his old house where he lived. The clock is electric and automatically changes between Greenwich Mean Time and Summer Time. Ian Shaw, Church Secretary, said, “When we were approached about a clock on the front of Church we were only too happy to agree. It makes the Church the centre of village life”. A special Thanksgiving Service was held at the Church during the summer, attended by Connie’s family.

Which hair products are best for you? Achieve sleek, gorgeous hair, even after you’ve left the salon. Hair Eden recommend the top products for all hair types from fine and limp to over-styled and damaged. For Fine Hair... If your hair is a little on the finer side try Caviar Oil Gel. This is an oil and hold in one, which gives the hair a thicker look while making it glossy and ridding you of those limp, flyaway hairs.

For Thick Hair... Redken Frizz Dismiss is perfect for getting a smooth, sleek look, and is great for anyone looking to be more in control of their hair. Although great for those with frizzy hair, it can be used to achieve a manageable hairstyle with any hair type, and works best alongside the shampoo and conditioner from the same range.

For Over-Styled Hair... For those who tend to use heat on their hair every day, Alterna Caviar Repair MultiVitamin Heat Protector is the perfect product. This light weight spray co ntains 5

different vitamins helping give hair body, strength and shine whilst also protecting the hair from heat of up to 232oC.

For Blonde Hair... To keep blonde hair from going yellow try L’Anza Silver Brightening Shampoo. This sulphate free shampoo preserves hair colour instantly brightening white, grey, platinum, blonde and highlighted hair.

For Damaged Hair... If hair has been over-coloured or over-styled and is need of repair, try Redken Extreme Length Primer. This rinse-off treatment targets distressed hair and promotes growth by reducing split ends and breakage, helping you to achieve healthy-looking, voluminous locks. For more information on the best products to suit your hair, and how to use them, visit the salon - one of our stylists will be happy to advise.

Bistro! In 2011 the owners of La Turka Bistro Zaf and Ihsan started their venture in Stockton Heath-Warrington. After four successful years they decided to sell and start a new concept in Monton Village in Eccles. A new beginning, a new challenge and great plans for the future, began in May 2015 when La Turka Bistro in Monton Village opened its doors.

Zaf and Ihsan... Four years of doing business together has formed a tight partnership for Zaf and Ihsan with clearly defined roles. Zaf, originally from Ankara, Turkey and who has long been a restauranteur, loves the excitement of meeting new people and ensuring their dining experience exceeds their expectations, while Ihsan originally from Istanbul, Turkey brings a sense of adventure to his kitchen and his passion for infusing new and traditional Turkish dishes with a unique twist is what makes the food so outstanding. They both have over 25 years of experience working or owning some of the finest restaurants and hotels.

Local History

Hanged, Drawn and Quartered... The life and times of St. Ambrose Barlow In today’s Ecumenical world, where there is mutual respect and interaction between those of different faiths, it is hard to imagine that this country was once riven by religious persecution, often of the most brutal kind.

THE REFORMATION But such was often the case in the events that followed the Reformation that was instituted by King Henry Vlll, a violent upheaval that initially had more to do with his obsession to secure his dynasty by the production of a male heir, than to religious fervour for reform. We all know that he famously married six wives in attempting to produce a son. To achieve this, when the Established Church of England was the Roman Catholic faith - which denied him divorce from his wife Catherine of Aragon - he was prepared to break with Rome and make his own rules! Accordingly he declared himself Supreme Head of the Church in England. This of course made him the potential owner of all Church property, and ably assisted by Thomas Cromwell, his chief adviser, the Dissolution of the Monasteries and confiscation of all their wealth and lands soon followed. Such institutions had served as hospitals, hostelries and sanctuaries for the mass of the population for hundreds of years, some of these were now distributed as reward for loyalty, to those aristocrats who supported Henry. Unsurprisingly, this did not go down well with many in the population, particularly in the North, which remained staunchly Catholic and resisted the changes to religious practice. They had also many economic complaints, neglect by central Government of poorer regions, they suffered the loss of support from the monasteries. Revolts broke out. First in Lincolnshire, then in Yorkshire and Cumbria. The largest was the “Pilgrimage of Grace”, a gathering of 30,000 under local aristocrats who faced a Royal army of only 12,000. Negotiations were held and the leader of the Royal army, faced by greater numbers, rashly made promises that he knew the King would not keep. The protesters dispersed, the threat was over, the fate of the leaders of the “revolt” was 42 ON OUR DOORSTEP

sealed. Henry subsequently had them all, almost 300, arrested and executed. From then on all Catholics were suspected of treason and conformity to the practices of the new faith, was demanded by law. All who continued to follow the old faith were termed “Recusants” and could be liable to confiscation of land and property, imprisonment, possibly death. After Henry’s death, in 1547, he was succeeded by his 9 year old son Edward lV who was schooled by Thomas Cranmer, the Archbishop of Canterbury, a committed Protestant. War between the Protestant and Catholic faiths had broken out all over Europe, eventually leading to a north/south division that generally prevails today. No longer was the Reformation simply a question of faith, but more a political divide. Edward’s short reign ( just 5 years), was characterised by strict conformity to Protestantism - or else... He was succeeded by his elder half sister Mary. The daughter of Catherine of Aragon, she was a zealous Catholic, determined to restore the Old Faith. She initially made promises of toleration but soon started on a path of revenge against all who had followed her predecessors’ policies. She was married to King Philip of Spain, a Catholic monarch and, with his backing had hundreds of leading figures (including Cranmer), arrested and summarily executed. Her reign lasted only 5 years but it earned for her the title of “Bloody Mary”. Elizabeth l was then Queen and she restored the status quo, of repression of Catholics and the viewing of them as potential traitors to the Crown and England. Barred from any public office, shorn of possessions, subject to suspicion, their fugitive priests subject to a death penalty, many conformed in public and worshipped in secret. The Pope had not helped. In 1570 he published an Edict that urged English Catholics to depose their Ruler by any means and in 1588 gave his blessing to the Spanish Armada!

THE PRIEST Into this turmoil of religion and politics a boy was born in 1585, in Barlow Hall, Chorlton-cum-Hardy. The fourth son of a local nobleman, Sir Alexander Barlow, he was christened at Didsbury Chapel as FOR ADVERTISING OR GENERAL ENQUIRIES, PLEASE CALL 0161 790 2504

Edward Barlow. In the previous year his grandfather had died in prison for refusing to conform to the rules of the new religion and two-thirds of his estate had been confiscated. The family had reluctantly conformed thereafter but, in 1607, Edward reverted to Catholicism and travelled to the English College in Douai in France to study for the Priesthood. Subsequently he attended the Royal College of St. Alban in Vallodolid in Spain, before returning to Douai where he became a Benedictine monk and was Ordained a priest in 1617, taking the name “Ambrose”. Ambrose then returned to England, taking up residence at the home of Sir Thomas Tyldesley at Morleys Hall in Astley, a moated house which exists to this day. From there he ministered to the local Catholic population for the next 24 years. He avoided detection by the local Protestant authorities in all those years by being continually on the move, frequently staying with his kinfolk, the Downes family, at Wardley Hall in Swinton (now the Residence of the RC Bishop of Salford). In all his travels he met with the local faithful and said Mass, all in secret. Despite his evasive skills Ambrose was arrested four times, but each time released for lack of evidence. In 1641, King Charles l issued a Proclamation which decreed that all Catholic priests should leave the country within a month or face being arrested and tried for treason - for which the penalty was imprisonment or death. Ambrose’s parishioners implored him to leave, or at least go into hiding, but he refused. He had recently had a stroke which had left him partially paralysed. “Let them fear that have anything to lose, which they are unwilling to part with”, he told them – an evident reference to life and his lack of fear in losing it. On 25th April 1641, Easter Day, Ambrose and his congregation of around 100 were surrounded at Morleys Hall by an armed group of 400 led by the Protestant Vicar of Leigh, Father Ambrose surrendered and his followers were released after their names had been recorded. It is said that before the arrival of the Vicar’s party, Ambrose had sufficient prior warning to enable him to throw the chalice that he had used in the Mass into the

Wardley Hall, Swinton

Hall’s moat. If true, it remains there still. Ambrose was escorted to a Justice of the Peace by an escort of 60 to guard against any attempt to rescue him and then to Lancaster Castle. On 7th September he appeared before Judge Sir Robert Heath when he professed his adherence to the Catholic faith and defended his actions. The following day, the Feast of the Nativity of Mary, he was found guilty and sentenced to death. Two days later he was taken from the Castle, tied to a hurdle drawn by a horse and taken to the public place of execution. There he was hanged, dismembered, quartered and boiled in oil... His head was afterwards exposed on a pike. The King who had specified this penalty and perpetuated the barbaric form of execution was to lose his own head, after the Civil War just a few years later... It was to take another 180 years before religious tolerance prevailed and the Catholic Emancipation Act was passed by Parliament. This removed all but one of the restrictive laws that had prevailed. The only one which still exists? No Roman Catholic may become Monarch.

SAINTHOOD On December 15th 1929 Pope Pius Xl proclaimed Father Ambrose to be “Blessed” (a prelude to Sainthood), in a ceremony in St. Peter’s Basilica. In recognition of the large number of English Catholics who were executed during the Reformation, Pope Paul Vl decreed on 23rd October, 1970 that he was Canonising (creating Saints) of a number of them. These became known as the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales. Father Ambrose Barlow was one of them.

RELICS Many relics of St. Ambrose exist. The skull at Wardley Hall is reputed to be his, a hand is at Stanbrook Abbey near Worcester, another hand at Mount Angel Abbey in Oregon USA and his jawbone at the RC church near his birthplace at Barlow Moor. `
