Salford City College does the Treble: Number 1 College for School Leavers, Adults and Apprenticeships Salford City College is officially the top performing general further education (GFE) college in Greater Manchester for school leavers, adults and Apprenticeships. Data from the government’s Skills Funding Agency confirmed Salford City College’s treble success. The high quality teaching and learning at the College was evident in learner satisfaction surveys and the Department for Education league tables. The College was rated ‘good’ by Ofsted in December 2015. 16-18 success rates proudly stand at 86%, adult success rates are 89.5% and Apprenticeship success rates 81.6%, putting Salford City College ahead of all other GFE colleges in Greater Manchester.

8 ON OUR DOORSTEP

John Spindler, CEO and Principal of Salford City College said, “This achievement is down to the professionalism of all of our teaching and support staff, their hard work and dedication and the amazing attitude of our students to their studies. Apprenticeship success is supported by the College working with great employers, who provide wonderful opportunities for people starting Apprenticeships in their chosen careers.” Salford City College has exciting plans for September 2016 with each of its centres specialising in curriculum areas. Each centre will be developing new facilities over the next two years to ensure learners will study in state of the art facilities. For more information visit: www.salfordcc.ac.uk

FOSTERING BENEFITS YOUR OWN CHILDREN The secret to fostering when you have children of your own? Talk, talk and talk some more. That’s the advice of mum of three Susan who specialises in short term fostering placements.

“Because of that I always wanted to foster and when my youngest was six, we did. I sat down with my children and talked it through and they said yes. I do the same now when I get a call about a placement. I tell them as much as I know about the child or children and ask if it’s okay.”

And with five ‘children’ in the house, ranging from in their twenties to six years old, she says making time for every one of them is also crucial.

“I encourage them all to talk and let me know if they are finding anything difficult. Plus, you’ve got to make time for every single one - even the older ones like to go out for a meal with us on their own now and again”.

“I was fostered at three years old and, while it worked out well for me, my sister found it hard to be split from her parents, brother and me,” said Susan, whose husband Harry is also a full time foster carer.

If you have children at home, you can foster as long as your foster child has their own bedroom and there is at least two years age difference between them and your children. Contact Salford City Council for more details.

Bolton School: Where Children Enjoy the Very Best Start in Life With 2,350 pupils enjoying an education from Nursery to Sixth Form, we are one of the largest schools in the UK. The School balances the best of tradition with cutting-edge modernity. This year we are celebrating our 500th anniversary since Bolton School was first mentioned as “a going concern” but this illustrious heritage is enhanced by the recent completion of an £18m building programme, which has seen the construction of a new shared Sixth Form Centre, a co-educational Infant School, Junior Girls’ School and a refurbished Junior Boys’ School.

Inspections regularly assess the School as “excellent” in all categories and annual exam results place the School among the top schools in the country. In last year’s DfE ranking of schools by GCSE results the Girls’ Division was the highest performing independent school in the country and 25th against all schools nationally. OPEN EVENTS Our next Open Morning is on Saturday 15th October (9.30am – 1.00pm). Alternatively, you can always arrange a private tour of any section of the school during term time by calling: 01204 840201

In recent years, all pupils in Years 3 and above at Bolton School have been issued with iPads to complement their studies.

REALISING POTENTIAL With consistently high examination results, outstanding inspection reports, excellent facilities and incredible extra-curricular opportunities, this friendly school will enable your child to realise their full potential. “Bursaries and Scholarships available to pupils entering Year 7”

Refurbishment Fundraising:

£20,000 STILL TO RAISE ROE GREEN PLAY PARK IS AT RISK OF CLOSURE... The existing equipment is in urgent need of refurbishment. Parts of the play area are becoming dangerous and, due to its age, equipment cannot be replaced. Salford City Council has already taken sections away. The Council has limited funds available to repair and upgrade the park so the Roe Green community has been actively raising monies over the last year. There is still about £20,000 to raise to enable works to start in Spring 2017. There are a number of fundraising events in the

Pride in Lleyton Appeal

SNOWBALL Celebrating Lleyton’s 10th Birthday This is a very special year for Lleyton and his family as he will be 10! What is special about lleyton #singfor that? Diagnosed with the very rare Niemann-Pick disease, the family were told within days of his birth to “go home and make memories while they could”, as the doctors didn’t expect him to have a 3rd birthday. So this is truly a special milestone for everyone! We are campaigning for Gary Barlow to attend the #snowball event and #singforlleyton. Gary has asked via social media for milestone birthdays, instead of weddings, and we think this Birthday is one Gary should attend! The Snowball is taking place Saturday 17th December, Swinton Park Golf Club. Tickets are still available at £30pp, but selling out fast.

This includes a 3 course meal, live Robbie Tribute and raffles for major prizes and autographed memorobilia. Most things needed have been donated or sponsored, thanks to many individuals and companies who’ve seen our previous articles in this magazine. However, there are still a few things we would like for the event - they are: Photo Booth Snow Ball/Men Balloon displays Candy Cart Flower Sprays or Bouquets x 10 Limo for 15 very excited children! We are also looking for raffle prizes: • Meal + wine for 2 • Meal for family of 4 • Overnight stay for 2 • Pamper session • Cut & Blow • Tickets to theatre/sports/music events • Food/Sweet/Drinks Hampers If you can help, please contact Gayle at lleyton@hotmail.co.uk

The Blitz: Part 2

Manchester in Flames Tucked away behind the concrete monstrosity that is wryly known by locals as “The Berlin Wall” in Piccadilly’s shabby Gardens in Manchester, is an enigmatic, but beautiful, metal sculpture. Flanked by the Wall on one side and by rapidly growing trees, into which it merges, this memorial is “The Tree of Remembrance”.

Passed by thousands daily, most of whom are oblivious to its existence or significance, it commemorates the civilian deaths caused by bombing in the Manchester Blitz during World War 2. Commissioned in 2005 some 60 years after those events, it was created by Fiona Heron and Wolfgang Buttress (the latter famous for many sculptures, most recently for the “Swarm of Bees” in Kew Gardens). The sculpture in Piccadilly, as its name suggests, takes the form of a beautiful Scots Pine tree, crafted in steel and bronze and the trunk carries the names of the “Christmas Blitz” victims.

Manchester Under Attack The “Blitz”, short for the German blitzkrieg (total war), was the intensive bombing of Britain’s cities by the German Air Force (Luftwaffe). In Greater Manchester it occurred frequently, from August 1940 until the middle of 1944. The major attack, which resulted in half the total deaths of the entire War, were the two raids of December 22nd-24th 1940, which caused widespread devastation, with almost 800 victims and thousands injured. A further significant attack in 30 ON OUR DOORSTEP

1941 again caused major damage and deaths. A total of 1,428 men, women and children died in Greater Manchester during the course of the War, many more thousands suffered injury and some 50,000 homes were destroyed. Other cities such as London, Liverpool and Coventry suffered far more raids and casualties and it is astonishing that Manchester, despite so many homes being targeted, escaped comparatively lightly in terms of casualties. But there were many individual tragedies hidden behind the bald statistics. In many cases entire families were wiped out. Such was the timing of the Christmas Blitz that celebrations often involved three generations of a family, relations and friends. There were also office and works parties that brought people together, gatherings of Air Raid Wardens, Police and medical personnel. Also, there may have been a more relaxed attitude... after all who would plan such an attack at Christmas? But Reichsmarshall Goering had a penchant for such timing throughout the War and he duly despatched, over the two nights, a total of 441 bombers, which dropped 443 tons of high explosives and 1,930 incendiary fire bombs. The strategic targets, the Salford Docks and Trafford Park industry, escaped major damage. Instead, it was the residential areas which were close to them and the city centre itself, which were devastated. A Christmas party in Miles Platting, which included three generations of the same family, sustained a direct hit by a bomb, resulting in the deaths of more than 20 family members men, women and children. The ARP and Medical HQ at Gilda Brook Road in Eccles was similarly destroyed, again in the course of a party, and 11 Wardens and First Aid personnel died. Local History

– before the War it had many more... The policy of the Nazi war effort was twofold: Having failed to invade our islands, the first aim was to destroy the capability to fight by eliminating our industrial capacity and starving us into submission. The second was to terrorise the population into accepting defeat, hence the indiscriminate bombing of cities without regard for civilian life. To see your city burn was supposed to destroy morale. Salford Royal Hospital after an air raid, June 1941

At Fernleaf Street in Moss Side a total of 24 people died. Ten of them lived at No.54 and included three young families of whom 6 were children. The street sustained a further direct hit at No.60 and all five members of the same family, including 3 children, perished. The street was so badly damaged that half of it was subsequently demolished. In Stretford the biggest loss of life was sustained at Stanley Road where a land mine descended by parachute. It exploded, smashing four houses and taking more than 30 lives. So violent was the explosion that some victims could not be identified - an anonymous fate that fell to 44 people during the course of the War. In 1941 a major raid on June 2nd struck the old Salford Royal Hospital at the Adelphi on Chapel Street. A bomb blasted half of the entire facia of the building and killed 14 nurses who were engaged in a staff meeting. The building was restored and has recently been converted into luxury flats but it still retains a memorial plaque to the nurses on its frontage. Air raids continued until 1944, but by then they had greatly diminished due to the decimation of the Luftwaffe. They were replaced by guided missiles - the infamous V1 Flying Bomb, the “Doodlebug” and the V2 Rocket. Manchester was beyond the V2’s range, fortunate in view of its destructive power. However, the V1 had the capability to reach the city and an attack was launched in 1944 on Christmas Eve with terrible consequences. One of the missiles fell on Oldham and killed 27 people.

The Material Damage To The City Victorian Manchester has many notable buildings

As far as the first aim was concerned the Luftwaffe displayed conspicuous inaccuracy in Manchester, which suggests that the second stratagem was the more likely - terror. In the Battle of Britain when they initially attacked the fighter airfields to cripple the RAF (and almost succeeded), they switched abruptly to civilian bombing - an inexplicable decision which cost them the Battle. Manchester’s industry survived to make war material, the Docks and its ships to transport armaments and food. A few bombs on the locks of the Ship Canal would have rendered the waterway useless. But the City suffered... The Cathedral was hit; the Free Trade Hall was gutted with only its walls still standing as an outer shell; the Royal Exchange suffered the same treatment - its magnificent trading hall destroyed. The Shambles, the mediaeval heart of old Manchester was reduced to only the Wellington Inn and Sinclairs Oyster Bar. Victoria Station, Central Station (now GMEX), the Palace Theatre - all these were grievously damaged but destined to be restored after the War. Many others were damaged or destroyed. The magnificent Assize Courts, a Gothic masterpiece did not rise again, nor did the Victoria Hotel.

Piccadilly, Manchester’s great Square had one entire side, consisting of four matching blocks of cotton goods warehouses, go up in a spectacular blaze. Their site is now entirely occupied by the City Tower and hotel complex spanning from Mosley Street to Portland Street. A stroll through the Northern Quarter or Spinningfields can still reveal a few “crofts”, now car parks, where once stood buildings, but are actually relic “bombsites”.

HELP REVEAL BRIDGEWATER CANAL’S HIDDEN STORIES We are looking for volunteers to contribute to the transformation of the Bridgewater Canal through rediscovering its stories and sharing them with residents and visitors. There are many ways you can get involved from researching photographs and documents, exploring heritage features along the canal to taking part in visits to archive collections, devising interpretative walks and lots more. The volunteer programme is designed to be as flexible as possible. If you have an interest in a specific topic related to the history of the Bridgewater Canal in Salford we should be able to help you find out more & support you to share the stories you discover with a wider audience. 42 ON OUR DOORSTEP

Our heritage volunteers meet up every couple of weeks to share their progress and work together on joint projects. Come along and become part of the Bridgewater Canal’s unique history. For more information about any of our heritage projects please contact Katherine Rice at bridgewatercanal@salford.gov.uk or on 07766 550352.
