It’s been a lovely Autumn so far with the warmth of summer still lingering. The mild weather, coupled with the kids going back to school, has made it the perfect time to end my shameful year of inactivity. I’ve started the Couch to 5k running programme with GMCR Salford - a friendly community running group. It’s been great to get out, meet new people and to not train alone. If you are thinking about starting yourself, I highly recommend joining a group. After last year’s lack of festivities, I am really looking forward to the lead up to Christmas. We’ve already booked onto RHS Garden Bridgewater’s “Glow” event (see page 35). It’s going to be a magical start to the festive season!

IT CHEERS US UP, WE HOPE IT DOES YOU TOO! You may have heard a rumour or had a double-take one Wednesday morning when a dragon ran past you or a someone commented, “I’m sure I saw 5 Harry Potters walking through the woods today”. Well don’t run to the doctors for a check up, its true! We are the Worsley Wednesday Walkers, and our aim is just to make people smile. It all started back in the cold of 2020. A group of us, all living on our own in Worsley, decided to meet at 6am every day to walk from Roe Green to Monton and back with the aim of helping our own mental health and fitness. One day we realised we all seemed to wear the same outfits each morning, so

decided on Wednesday we should try something different. Well, as we all clearly have a screw loose, we turned up in fancy dress expecting to surprise each other! The walk was hilarious and many people we passed stopped, chatted and importantly laughed. That was it, the idea was born and since then we’ve done the Wednesday walk in fancy dress. The reactions we get are magical, from meeting people that laugh to having drivers honk and wave. If it makes you smile, we’ve done our job. So from the Worsley Wednesday Walkers to you… have fun, live your life with a smile and pass on the @WorsleyWednesdayWalkers joy!

Alderwood Care Home’s

Mount Snowdon Challenge The residents and dedicated staff at Alderwood Care Home in Boothstown, are one step closer to their goal of raising the funds they need to buy an interactive table. In preparation for the challenge of climbing Mount Snowdon on 24th September, which is no mean feat, the Home Manager and her team took on the Lion and Lamb on Helm Crag in Grasmere last weekend. Their determination and the support they gave each other helped them battle through the pouring rain and difficult conditions to reach the summit, fortunately without too many slips and falls. This bonding experience has brought the team closer and has made them ready and raring to tackle Mount Snowdon. Not to be outdone, the residents, assisted by the staff, got involved too by doing fifty laps of the newly renovated garden. There is a Go Fund Me page for anyone wanting to donate to the cause. (This page is a collective one of all the staff raising money and the residents for their sponsors. The link is below, and the target is to raise £4,000 - the cost of the table is £4,999.) https://gofund.me/8416d00d Feel free to share and help the team raise funds! There is no I in TEAM, and this fantastic effort by Angela, Lorna, Yvonne, Shaunie, David and Malcolm demonstrates just how much the staff 14 ON OUR DOORSTEP

cares about their residents' happiness; don't you agree? ALDERWOOD CARE HOME About 10 miles from Manchester City Centre and within walking distance of local amenities, Alderwood Care Home is a haven amidst the hustle and bustle of city life, giving our residents quiet and peaceful surroundings.

This Boothstown care home is tastefully decorated with thirty-nine fully furnished rooms, many having en-suite facilities. Our Community

WE’RE DOING IT FOR SALFORD Salford residents cleaning up Salford

We are Salford Litter Heroes, a community-led litter picking group. Danielle, a local young person, set the project up with her mum in 2019 as they felt there was no end to litter and fly tipping. Since then they’ve grown a following of 1,600 people and in some months the volunteers collect over 2,000 bags of litter. We don’t just want to litter pick, then for it to return, but to end it long-term. This is our goal and it will require a lot of education. It’s a long-term process but we won’t give up on solving litter all across Salford. We are SO passionate about tackling

litter for good and have many ideas in the pipeline including a celebration event, celebrity endorsements and closer links with the council. All our events are posted on our Facebook page if you want to join in and help us! We have monthly organised events around Salford, or you can organise your own with family and friends. We are also looking for more people to help us run the Facebook group and events, so if you would like any volunteer experience, let us know! Local History

Stories behind the Headstones at St. Mark's Church, Worsley

William Edward Teale (1843-1912)

A

t the end of Lansdowne Road, Monton, south of the M602, lies the Protector Lamp Business Park, so named because miners' safety lamps have been made there for over 100 years. The company (Protector Lamp & Lighting Company) was formed in 1873, in order to acquire the business and patent rights of William Edward Teale, an oil and lamp manufacturer of Manchester. By 1892, the business had relocated to its present site. W. E. Teale was the son of Joseph Teale, initially a surgeon and later a manufacturer of cotton! He had first gained his medical qualifications in Edinburgh in 1829/1830. By 1861, Joseph and family had moved to an address in Salford, where he was recorded as being a surgeon, cotton dealer - and a Captain of a local regiment!

William was born in Salford in about 1843, the fourth child of Joseph and Mary Ann. His name appears as the sixth inscription on the family headstone in St. Mark's Churchyard. By the time of the 1871 census, he was recorded as an 'Inventor and Manufacturer of Patent Colliery Lamp'. He married Ada J. Williamson in Tunbridge Wells in 1866 and they were to have 14 children. Business developed and progressed for William Edward Teale. We know from the censuses quoted above that he was a safety lamp manufacturer. He eventually patented a lamp of his own design; but prior to this, his company manufactured Mueseler Miner's Oil/Kerosene Lamp, the design of which originated in Belgium. By 1891, the family had relocated to Sindsley House, Broadoak Park, Worsley. Now living within the parish, W. E. Teale began to involve himself in the life of the parish church, serving as a sidesman and as a church warden (1893 to 1905). He died on 14th July 1912 at Sindsley House aged 69. The funeral took place at St. Mark's on Wednesday 17th July 1912 at 2.30pm. However, it was his local business that linked him most strongly to Worsley. A late 19th century copy of Slater's Trade Directory covering Chorlton-cumHardy shows the location of an early factory: Teale, 20 ON OUR DOORSTEP

William Edward, manager, Protector Lamp and Lighting Co., New Lynne, Chorlton-cum-Hardy. William set up a business under his own name in 1865, having parted company from Frank Davies. Records of a board meeting held on 28th August 1882 show that W. E. Teale was managing director of the new company. Sadly, numerous disagreements occurred within the Board over a number of years; and having formed a committee of Photo: www.protectorlamp.com shareholders, at an extraordinary general meeting, W. E. Teale was removed from office as Director and Managing Director. His formal resignation was received on 10th December 1889. However, this setback did not deter him from setting up another business on his own. [For more information, please visit the website of the Worsley Civic Trust > St.Mark's Church Graveyard Tales]

Our Community

GMP SALFORD NORTH WEST:

PROTECTING YOUR HOME Here are our priorities for the coming months... 1) Burglary Unfortunately we are once again seeing a rise in burglary crimes across our neighbourhood, and the surrounding areas. We are well versed in tackling this crime type, and will pick up where we last left off before Covid. We will be taking the following action: Putting together some proactive operations with our partners across the district and within TVIU (Tactical Vehicle Intercept Unit) to target the offenders. As always, these will not be announced until after the event so we don't give the offenders notice. PCSOs will be visiting all burglary victims and hotspot areas to complete target hardening and crime prevention work within the community. Regular updates on social media with ways to prevent the crime, report and assist us with our investigation. Targetting offenders known to disrupt behaviour. 2) Youth Crime: ASB and Knife Crime We have seen an increase in youth crime, sometimes involving the use of knives, which we are aiming to target and reduce. We will be working with our partners and school engagement officers to identify those involved and change their behaviour through varying methods dependent on the case. How you can help? Continue to report crime and suspicious activity to us via our website, live chat service or 101 (999 in an emergency) and NOT VIA SOCIAL MEDIA. Follow the Neighbourhood Team on Facebook (GMP Little Hulton, Walkden, Ellenbrook & Worsley), Twitter (GMP Salford) or on the Nextdoor app for regular updates. If you have any questions or concerns, contact us: Email: SalfordNorthWest@gmp.pnn.police.uk Phone: 0161 856 5035

Burglary Prevention Tips

Make sure your doors and windows are locked at all times, whether you are home or not. Set your burglar alarm when leaving the house and when you go to bed. Check existing door locks and ensure they are up to date with the latest lock standards. Contact your local Master Locksmith for advice Use additional security measures such as patio door locks which can be fitted over door handles or bolted down behind a sliding door. Sash Jammers can also be fitted to doors and windows, check it won’t invalidate any warranty on your doors. Make your home look occupied during the hours of darkness using a light-timer to help. Ensure keys and other valuables are stored out of reach and out of sight. If you have a keyless entry vehicle, the fob is constantly emitting a signal. Block the signal by using a metal tin, including the spare key! Register property on Immobilise.com, so it can be returned to the rightful owner if recovered. Keep bins away from windows as they can be used as a climbing aid for burglars. Work with neighbours to set up or join a Neighbourhood Watch scheme. Review security lighting.

Keep Burglars Out! Making your home less visible with overgrown bushes, trees, high fences or walls makes it easier for a burglar to get close to a home unnoticed. Lower fences at the front around one-metre high are preferable to high fences. At the rear and sides, taller fencing will prevent easy access. Trellis, thorny plants, or an anti-climb topping such as plastic spikes make it difficult for anyone climbing over a fence or gate. Planting prickly or barbed shrubbery along boundaries and fence lines acts as an effective natural barrier. Gravel driveways and paths will make sure you hear anyone approach.

A BOUNTIFUL HARVEST ...a busy season at the allotment

The pandemic gave us plenty to think about and time to do the thinking.

y

Our first problem was funding. The Macmillan allotment is completely self-funded and our annual open day is our only sure source of income. The lockdown quickly put paid to this plan, so we carried on planting and feeding whilst watching our budget disappear. Luckily, some nearby allotmenteers donated compost, their surplus seedlings and one, very generously paid our seeds bill for us. We were asked to plant sunflowers in memory of those who passed away through Covid - we planted more than 200 seeds and distributed the seedlings across the City. Hopefully they have brightened some dark days. This year the weather has been particularly troublesome; the hot spells then torrential rain, followed by mixed episodes has upset many crops, but our first attempt at growing French Breakfast radishes, spring onions and Borlotti beans has been successful, whilst our onions, beetroot and courgettes have been spectacular! The dwarf french beans did not like the weather at all and we have had to declare a rare ‘crop failure’. When we planted our tomatoes we decided to mix the plants together in two beds in the polytunnel. This experiment proved very fruitful and we now have cherry tomatoes in profusion, rapidly being consumed by family and visitors and a bountiful maincrop ready for turning into sauces and soups, subject to surviving 24 ON OUR DOORSTEP

the salads that some will grace. All our varieties of apple have done very well and we are waiting to see how well they store, now that they are producing substantial crops.

SALFORD ALLOTMENTS UPDATE Away from the plot Don Booth, chairman of the SAF (Salford Allotment Federation), has been collaborating with the City Council to work towards re-opening the Beechfield allotments in Swinton. The developers of the nearby former Swinton Sewage Treatment Works, Bellway, have agreed to release funds for the building of a park area and the reinstatement of the derelict allotments. Initial work on the design and funding of these operations is now underway and the Council will be putting the legal framework for the whole process to get started as soon as possible. The land is considered to be contaminated so the SAF has been in discussion with Salford University, advisors from the NAS (National Allotment Society) and has recently approached Brunel University for advice on remediation of the problem.

Local History

Lord Ellesmere’s Bridgewater connection by Mark Child The future Francis Egerton, Earl of Ellesmere was born on 1 January 1800 as the second son of Lord Stafford of Trentham Hall in Staffordshire, with the prospect of inheriting the profits of the Bridgewater Trust set up by the Will of his great-uncle 3rd Duke Bridgewater. He established a successful literary and parliamentary career, in London, until coming into his inheritance, on his father’s death in 1833, by which time the canal repair fund, created by the Duke’s Will, was clearly inadequate to cover the dilapidations incurred over 70 years of operation. Consequently, the annual income had fallen from £50,000 in the 1820’s to £17,000 in 1837.

women underground, and used their own financial resources to build houses, schools and churches in Worsley and Walkden, as well as setting up a non-contributory pension scheme for Bridgewater Trust workers. Meanwhile he worked closely in parliament with Lord Ashley (later Lord Shaftesbury) on the 1840’s mines and factory legislation, and with Robert Peel on Repeal of the Corn Laws - on the strength of which he was created Earl of Ellesmere in 1846.

Faced with the potential loss of his entire income, he agreed with the Trustees to approach parliament for a variation of the Will in the form of a mortgage to augment the repair fund (financed out of Francis’ income) - on condition that he could take up residence in Worsley Old Hall and share control over the management with the Supervising Trustee. Agreement was reached with the existing Trustee, Robert Haldane Bradshaw, who retired in 1834, but serious difficulties between Francis and Bradshaw’s successor, James Sothern were resolved only three years later by Sothern’s departure, at a personal cost to Lord Francis of £45,000. The new financial structure led to a sharp increase in the canal income to almost £50,000 in 1837, maintained until the Canal was sold in 1871 in order to pay for improvements to the Worsley collieries.

The estate will however come to life again, as the new RHS Bridgewater garden spreads out over the grounds.

Lord Francis and his wife duly took up residence in Worsley Old Hall, in 1837 and turned their attention to improving the conditions of the villagers. They banned the employment of

His final contribution to the prosperity of Worsley was the spectacular New Hall Mansion overlooking the Bridgewater canal, along which Francis used to delight in taking his guests, including Queen Victoria, on barge excursions. The Hall was maintained as a family home for Lord Francis’s son and grandson, until 1914, but his later descendants transferred to Mertoun House, on the Scottish Borders. The Worsley Estate, including the valuable coal-mines, was sold in 1923 to cover death duties, but no use could be found for the increasingly dilapidated house, which was demolished in 1939.

Legal Column

WHAT IS A DEPUTYSHIP? A Deputyship Order is a legal document which enables elected representatives to make important financial and welfare decisions on behalf of a person who has lost the capacity to handle their own affairs (i.e. as a result of dementia, a brain injury or severe learning disabilities). There are two types of Deputy: A Property and Financial Affairs Deputy will look after a person’s financial and physical assets, for example their rent, mortgage payments, bills, investments or pensions. A Personal Welfare Deputyship Order relates to the management of important care or medical decisions. If you become a Deputy, you are also required to submit annual reports to the Office of the Public Guardian explaining the decisions you have made on the concerned individual’s behalf.

KRL Cleaning Services

You need to make an application to the Court of Protection if you are seeking to obtain a Deputyship Order. The process involves a considerable amount of paperwork, however, you can appoint a lawyer to carry out the application for you. A lawyer will also be able to provide important legal advice to answer any questions you may have about the process. If you are over the age of eighteen you can apply to become a Deputy, however, it is important to bear in mind that there may be some occasions where the application for Deputyship may be denied if the Court deems that your own personal circumstances will compromise your ability to adequately manage the affairs of the individual concerned (e.g. you have reduced mental capacity or are bankrupt).
