Is it just me, or is this year racing by? We are well and truly into Autumn now with Christmas not too far away!
4
However, the great thing about this time of year in Worsley is that there are lots of fun events coming up for Halloween and Bonfire Night. Check out the What’s On guide for details for October-November. Now it’s Autumn, there couldn’t be a better time to start exercising and going for walks in the woods. Karen Pheasant, from Ladies Workout Express, explains how exercise can help reverse the ageing process, which I’m sure we all want to do!

Worsley Woods Races: September 2011 Once again Roe Green saw an invasion of families and competitive athletes ready to brave the Worsley Woods terrain. After what seemed like weeks of constant rain, the conditions underfoot were going to be tough. The 4.5 mile race was won for the 5th year in a row by international marathon runner Andi Jones from Salford Harriers AC, followed by Mark Russell, also from Salford Harriers. Donna Jones from Sale Harriers took the prize for 1st lady with Nicola Wood from Accrington Road Runners in 2nd place, closely followed by Jo Robbins (Sale Harriers). Winners - Le : Andi Jones Right: Donna Jones The family fun run was again well attended with over Below: Runners in the Fun Run 150 athletes of all ages completing the shortened version of the course. Children were all presented with a medal for their efforts and the overall winner was Hollie Barnes, with Mikey Kingston taking the 1st Boy trophy.
The races, organised by Worsley Physio, were sponsored by local businesses BetFred, Tax Assist Accountants and Fledglings nursery who provided prizes and goodies. Over £1,000 has been raised for charities, with St Ann’s Hospice being the main charity to benefit. Jackie Mason - Worsley Physio

“Save Chat Moss”
Lancashire Wildlife Trust’s quest to conserve our Mosslands Chat Moss is a large area of peat bog, thought to be 7,000 years old, and makes up 30% of the City of Salford. Peat started to develop here with the ending of the last ice age, c.10,000 years ago. HISTORY OF PEAT EXTRACTION Peat extraction at Chat moss goes back several hundred years. From the 17th to the 19th centuries, extraction was by sod cutting at a relatively low level, primarily for burning as fuel. It is only since the 1950s that peat has been extracted for horticultural purposes through a series of planning permissions which vastly accelerated the rate at which peat was removed. PEAT EXTRACTION TODAY Planning permissions for peat extraction at Chat Moss expired Dec 2010, but there are still substantial amounts of peat on the site, and new applications were submitted Aug 2010 for both the Salford CC and the Wigan side. The new proposal was to continue extracting peat following the expiry of the current permission in Dec 2010, and to delay the current requirement to restore the site to active “sphagnum” mossland, for another 15 years. In this time, the developers William Sinclairs, would remove another 2 metres of peat - not only delaying restoration but also making effective restoration more difficult. As 99% of lowland raised bogs in the North West have been either severely damaged or destroyed completely, it is not surprising that the Lancashire Wildlife Trust leapt into action to save Chat Moss. The “Save Chat Moss” Campaign resulted in over 600 objections to the proposals being received by Salford CC. It was highlighted in local media coverage and the overwhelming reaction was one of outright opposition. 6 ON OUR DOORSTEP
UNLAWFUL PEAT EXTRACTION On Good Friday 2011, to the anger of the local community, William Sinclair recommenced their peat extraction operation despite having no valid planning permission. Salford CC served them with a 28 day Temporary Stop Notice, and in June 2011 Salford Planning Committee unanimously rejected the application on grounds which included the impact on a local Site of Biological Interest, local policies, and the impact on climate change. It is believed that this is the first time a local authority has used climate change as a reason for refusing an application of this sort, which makes this a landmark ruling, but one which is highly likely to be challenged through the appeal process. Finally, Salford took High Court action to ensure no further extraction took place on their side of the boundary. Sadly, this action did not halt the extraction of peat on Chat Moss. William Sinclairs simply moved their operations to the Wigan side of the boundary and carried on extracting peat throughout Summer 2011. Wigan Council finally refused the applications on their side of the boundary in August 2011, but at the time of writing have still not taken enforcement action against the company. THE GOOD NEWS! Lancashire Wildlife Trust submitted a bid on 30th August for £1.7m to the Heritage Lottery Fund. Together with other funding, this will allow the Trust to buy Little Woolden Moss, restore it to lowland raised bog and open it up for access and learning opportunities for the local community. Tried and Tested: Microdermabrasion My skin was in terrible condi on and crying out for help, so I was keen to try it out. I was one of Dawn’s first clients at her new clinic in Roe Green. The treatment lasted about half an hour and was surprisingly relaxing. Dawn discusses your skin condi on and explains exactly how the treatment works. Before the Microdermabrasion, your face is gently cleansed. Then a machine is used to blast ny crystals onto your skin and vacuums it up. This exfoliates and removes the top layers of dead cells, increasing blood circula on and encouraging skin cell renewal. It didn’t hurt - there was a slight ckly feeling, and was a li le bit more prickly on the sides of my cheeks, but that was all. The skin is then toned, moisturised and SPF lo on is applied to protect the exposed layer from the sun. The Verdict: My skin felt immediately cleaner and fresher, and did look smoother just a er a taster session. Ideally, you have a course of 8 treatments and the intensity/rou ne changes as you progress. I have sent my husband on a full course in the hope of making him look 10 years younger! He finds it really relaxing and there is a definite improvement just a er 2 sessions.

Worsley: Its Origins and Descendants... A Tale of Knights, Nobility and Royalty Mark Worsley, a likely descendent of the original Worsley family shares his knowledge of the origins of Worsley, before the arrival of the famous Duke of Bridgewater. The Worsley we live in today is a totally different place to what it would have been until a couple of hundred years ago, when its landscape changed dramatically with the building of the Bridgewater canal and the development of the mines in the Victorian era. Until that time it had remained for many centuries an essentially rural farming area, lying far away from the town of Manchester. It seems that in Roman times, the area we now call Worsley consisted of large forests, marshes and moorlands, being very wild and rugged. The Romans built several roads through the area, including the main Manchester to Wigan road, which ran near Worsley Old Hall. Later the Anglo-Saxons built a settlement here. Saxon settlements with names ending in Legh or Ley, meant a meadow or forest clearing and in its old English form, the old name for what we now call Worsley meant "the cleared place that was cultivated or settled". After 1066 the area was governed by Norman Lords of the Manor. The ancient manor of Worsley covered an area far larger than the present district and included Swinton, Pendlebury and Little Hulton. The first Norman Lord of the Manor that we know of was Sir Elias de Worsley (born 1150) and this land was given to him by the King. Elias fought in the Crusades and was part of the army of knights that fought in the Holy Land. 16 ON OUR DOORSTEP
Later descendants included Sir Richard de Worsley and Johannes de Worsley, who were both Knights of the Order of St John. The Order established a hospital in Jerusalem to care for sick pilgrims and is where the St John Ambulance originates from. These original Worsley Lords, who are probably my distant great grandfathers, would have lived in the largest house in the area, the Manor House, which it is thought may have been on the site of what is now Worsley Old Hall. The villagers leased land from the Lord and as his tenants they were expected to work on his land two or three days a week and additional days in busy times for ploughing or harvesting. The people of Worsley would have lived in little two roomed cottages made of wattle and daub, with thatched roofs. The Lord owned a water mill, probably near Mill Brow and the people had to pay the Lord to grind their corn there and bake bread in his oven. The Worsley family continued to govern the area until 1385 when the Masseys of Tatton became the owners. Later descendants of the family include Sir Charles Worsley, a Governor General under Oliver Cromwell and the first Member of Parliament for Manchester and in the present day, Katharine Worsley, who married into the Royal Family and is the current Duchess of Kent. Solar PV Panels and the Feed In Tariff Scheme... A solution to energy price rises? What is the “Feed In Tariff “ Scheme? The Feed In Tariff (FITs) scheme, introduced in April 2010, replaces Government grant funding for electricity generating products. Under the FIT Scheme, energy companies must pay anyone generating their own electricity from renewable or low carbon sources such as Solar PV panels for every Kilowatt produced, plus a small amount for any surplus energy that is fed back into the national grid. What Is Solar PV? Solar PV or photovoltaic systems convert light from the sun into electricity that can be used in your home, and any excess sold back to the grid.
The benefits of installing Solar PV Panels FITs payments are guaranteed for 25 years (currently 43.3p per unit) and indexed linked to inflation Payments are tax free Save on your electricity bills by using your own electricity. Surplus units can be sold back to grid (currently at 3.1p per unit) Provide 8-10% return on your investment. Reduce carbon footprint
If you are considering Solar PV and want to maximise the returns, then look into it now as the FIT rates will reduce in April 2012. FITs are locked in at the rate you start with for the duration of your tariff. Example:An average 2.2 kwp system in the North West would generate per annum: Electricity Generated: 1,833 kwh Genera on Tariff Income @ 43.3p: £794 Export Tariff Income @ 3.1p: £28* Electricity Bill Savings @13p: £119 Total Income + Savings: £941 Return On Investment: 10% *50% sold back to the grid

Health & Leisure
The Leisure Club... ...on your doorstep
The Country Club at Worsley Park is home to a fantastic Leisure Club. Many people don’t realise that the Leisure Club offers various membership packages, extensive facilities, studio classes, car park and a lively social atmosphere. The biggest surprise when people visit the club for the first time is the wow factor when they walk into the gym. Being part of a hotel, the general perception is a small basic gym with minimal facilities… this perception could not be further from the truth. With 14 treadmills, 9 cross trainers, a combination of 16 bikes, rowing machines, step machines, resistance equipment, free weights and core zones our leisure club is one of the biggest in the UK Marriott estate. The facilities don’t stop there. A large exercise studio caters for a variety of inclusive classes such as Yoga, Pilates, Zumba, Spin, Boxercise, Circuit and many more…. Further more, the leisure club has just had a soft refurbishment including a new look and brand new Star Trac Cardiovascular equipment. This impressive equipment definitely compliments the status of the hotel and country club. 28 ON OUR DOORSTEP
For the swimmers out there, a 20 metre indoor heated pool caters nicely for your chosen method of exercise. Challenge yourself to 80 lengths in our pool and you’ve hit 1 mile. Whatever your workout, whatever the reason for your visit, you’ll probably end up relaxing in the spa pool, Sauna or Steam Room afterwards. Choosing Worsley Park Leisure Club will also get you an attractive benefits pack to use around the hotel and country club. With 20% off food and beverage in our bars and restaurants, 20% off spa treatments and products and 50% off golf green fees, you have everything you need in one spot. Spa treatments and products are available to everyone not just residents of the hotel or country club members. The Spa of Senses has 4 treatments rooms, a manicure and pedicure room, relaxation area, shower facilities and a wide range of products to be tried and purchased. Get to know the leisure club that’s on your doorstep. You are invited to come and take a look at anytime. Call the club on 0161 975 2011

You’re never too old to exercise You are probably used to being exhorted to do 30 minutes of gentle exercise a day to reduce your risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke etc, but do you know that exercise can help to slow the ageing process, and even reverse it?
‘We don’t stop exercising because we grow old, we grow old because we stop exercising’ – Dr Kenneth Cooper
Muscle deterioration
From the age of around 35, we start to lose muscle. At first, it’s no big deal, but the older we get the more serious the loss becomes. Muscles are essential for movement and posture and this muscle loss is the main reason for loss of independence as we grow old, when we become too weak to get out of a chair unaided and even wash or dress ourselves. Muscle loss is also related to the onset of many bone diseases. The muscle that holds our spine in alignment can deteriorate as we age and cause major back problems. The same is true for the muscle and tendons around the knee and hip joints. Plus muscle is an active tissue that burns calories at rest, meaning the amount you can eat without putting on weight will also decrease with age.
Regain lost muscle
The good news is that regular resistance (or strength) training can halt and reverse muscle loss and it’s never too late to start; research shows that the older we are, the more relative benefits we can get. Resistance training can be provided in all sorts of ways; 30 ON OUR DOORSTEP
by moving our own body weight e.g. walking up stairs and getting up from a chair, by lifting, pushing and pulling weights e.g. free weights, or just doing household chores and gardening! We can also use water such as aquarobics, resistance bands, hydraulic gym equipment and pilates. These have the added benefit of being very gentle on the joints. Try to include some flexibility exercise like stretching or yoga, as this helps to keep our muscles and tendons supple and our joints mobile.
Building up your exercise regime
If you haven’t exercised for some time, start slowly with short walks 3-4 times a week and build up steadily. Then add resistance and flexibility work; there are some great books and websites out there that will guide you. Alternatively, book a session with a gym instructor and ask him or her to demonstrate a suitable programme. Remember though, to check with your GP before starting any new exercise programme. Low Back Pain... Understand and Advance by Jonathan Gaul, Swinton Physiotherapy Low back pain is a big issue because of its prevalence, affecting most people at some stage in their lives, and also because of the effect that it has on days lost from work. Terms like ‘spondylitis’, ‘trapped nerve’ and ‘slipped disc’ are common jargon but unless you have a true idea of the nature of the problem you could be doing yourself more harm than good.
and strain stimulus, whereas an older or more sedentary person will suffer from compression stimulus as there is less risk of strain, but greater potential for wear and tear.
There are two main sources of pain at the low back; tissue that is subject to stretch e.g. discs, ligaments, muscles; and tissue that is subject to compression e.g. bone and cartilage. Pain can fall into either category according to our age and lifestyle. The younger and more active individual will tend to suffer from stretch
Either situation requires different approaches to treatment. These days access is available to a wealth of information about back pain and exercises to treat yourself, but if that advice is not specific to the condition then it can prolong symptoms. Hence the importance of getting a thorough examination from a physiotherapist in order to allow a full appreciation of the cause of your pain, and a tailored rehabilitation plan to get you pain-free and functioning.

Small Business Advice Local Tax and Accountancy Specialist, Chris Jones, provides advice for small businesses
TODAY’S TOPIC: BOOKKEEPING WHAT DO I DO? Q:
I’ve just started my own business having been made redundant from my last job. I’ve registered with HMRC as self-employed, but could you tell me what my obliga ons are with regards to record-keeping for HMRC?
A:
Under current legisla on, business owners must retain their records for 6 years. Payroll records, CIS records and personal tax return informa on may be retained for less. HMRC provide no rules regarding the format of the records, but as a minimum they should include all sales and purchase invoices. Ul mately, the most important factor is that you keep accurate, mely records. So these could be anything from manual cashbooks, to computerised spreadsheets, to a sophis cated computerised bookkeeping package. Penal es will apply if HMRC ever enquired into your affairs and found no evidence to back up the figures in your income tax or VAT returns. HMRC are also clamping down on poor records, and can impose fines in severe cases where the records are felt to be inadequate and inaccurate.
