LISTINGS DECEMBER 2017

LGBT* Befriending Scheme • Are you feeling lonely or isolated? • Can’t get out so easily anymore? • Are you finding yourself spending more and more time alone? Living in London can become a lonely experience as you get older, especially as you can’t get out and about as you used to. Having somebody to spend time with and talk to can make all the difference. The Opening Doors London Befriending Scheme might be able to help you. The Befriending Scheme aims to reduce the stress of loneliness and isolation, increase people’s confidence and enable older people to maintain their independence. The scheme matches a volunteer Befriender with an older person for regular social contact. So if you feel you could benefit from the regular visits of a volunteer befriender, or if you have any friends, neighbours or relatives who could benefit, or if you would like to become a Volunteer Befriender please contact the Befriending Service 020 7239 0400 or befriending@openingdoorslondon.org.uk

the last few weeks have been busy at Opening Doors London. Staff and trustees met for an Away Day, hosted by our fabulous corporate partners Clifford Chance. It was an opportunity for us to think together about the journey travelled over the last year and celebrate some of the successes.

This really validates the need for separate and safe places for all of the LGBT communities. It really needs more funding to enable us to offer transport, do more publicity and keep it going beyond 6 months pilot – so if you are able to help in any way, please let us know. And in the meantime, please promote … and come along!

We also spent some time thinking about our values which underpin our work: being inclusive, dynamic, collaborative and having integrity. I hope to be able to update the website in due course with more about what these values mean to us as an organisation – and get your feedback. Paul, our Befriending Coordinator, commented on the day: “It is amazing. To think that only a couple of years ago there were a few of us sat round a table, worrying about whether we would be here in three months time. Look at us now! We are going from strength to strength.” In November, our Training Team delivered two training sessions: On 19th October our new Training Manager, Jim Glennon and three of the Opening Doors London Ambassadors [Annie Southerst, Geoff Boyd and Maggie Jones] delivered an intensive training workshop on ‘Understanding the Health and Social Care Needs of older LGBT* People’ for 40 staff and managers of the Alzheimer’s Society. This was a new programme, specially tailored to the needs of Alzheimer’s Society North West London, many of who provide dementia care support. Staff were particularly interested to hear about all the work Opening Doors London has done to support older LGBT* people living with dementia, including the positive results of our befriending relationships and the most recent ‘Rainbow Memory Café’ initiative. Feedback from staff on the day was uniformly positive, with one senior manager saying that the whole workshop had felt like “a really helpful conversation” about very practical ways in which care and support professionals at the Alzheimer’s Society could improve the quality of life of the older LGBT* people. We were also in Haringey for the first of our World Café events looking at how mainstream older people’s services [across all sectors] address the needs of the older LGBT* communities in the borough. Thanks to ODL members John, Jocelyn and Maggie for coming along and participating, ensuring that the voice of older LGBT people was heard! Our Rainbow Memory Café facilitated by Sally Knocker appears to have taken off well, with Sally saying “We couldn’t have wished for a more lovely group of gay men and women talking about how dementia impacts on their lives. A real sense of sharing our gay stories too from gay pubs in London which have come and gone, early Pride marches and coming out [or not] to our mothers”.

We also delivered the first sessions of our virtual support group for gay and bi men affected by Prostate Cancer. Our first meeting took place on Wednesday 15th October. Ben, our facilitator commented: ‘For me it highlighted each persons unique reaction to being diagnosed and the effects on their lives. It also reminded me how much more work we have to do in the NHS to improve our attitudes and understanding of the needs of gay and bisexual men. As each man’s story unfolded there was a true sense of comradery and despite the odds we are all in this together’. For more information contact ann. innes@prostatecanceruk.org I hope that I will see you at the various festive parties and events we have lined up during December. We have a Members Festive Party in Canary Wharf, a Volunteers Party here at Tavis House, a concert with the fabulous Nadine Benjamin and a carol concert at St Anne’s Soho. All require pre-booking – so don’t delay, get on Eventbrite today or call the office to book over the telephone.
