I recently gave a talk on BBC Radio 4 on the first official Pride march in 1972. It was part of a series called ‘1970s: The Decade that Invented the Future’ (and you can catch the whole series on BBC Sounds and on the BBC website). What I sought to do in the talk was show how the events leading to this first Pride were part of a much wider shift in our culture and politics that linked the emergence of gay liberation to the rise of the women’s movement and a new radicalism. After the broadcast someone asked me jokily why I never mentioned Opening Doors London. The obvious answer is that I was talking about what happened in 1972, long before anyone dreamed of an organisation of and for older LGBT+ people. Most of us involved at the time were young and gave little attention to the needs of older people. Nearly fifty years later most of us around in 1972 are now in our 70s and have a strong sense of the value of something like ODL. But the question set me thinking about the relationship between past and present, and how each of us individually and all of us collectively carry history within us. For LGBT+ people, who have historically been forced to live at the margins, at odds with our society, we live our history all the time. We are history. Which is why as an organisation like ODL puts so much emphasis on preserving our history. A number of you will already have been interviewed for our oral archives projects. Preserving memories of the past is not a self indulgence. It is essential for navigating the present. That first Pride in 1972 is not a half forgotten occurrence, It is part of our living present. Pride of course is still with us, as are many of our members who were around for the first Prides. Above all we have the living memory that this was not something done for us by others. It was something we did for ourselves – and we have every reason to be proud of what we have achieved in the years since, and what what we can achieve together now and in the future.

Lily Tomlin and Julia Gardner in Grandma (2015)

Screening of Grandma with Aon’s Pride Network The Aon Centre Join the Aon LGBT+ Network for a screening of off – beat hit Grandma (2015) with a drinks reception to follow. Lily Tomlin stars as Elle who has just gotten through breaking up with her girlfriend when [her] granddaughter Sage unexpectedly shows up needing 600 bucks before sundown. Temporarily broke, Grandma Elle and Sage spend the day trying to get their hands on the cash as their unannounced visits to old friends and flames end up rattling skeletons and digging up secrets. “Time passes. That’s for sure” reads an onscreen epigram at the start of “Grandma,” a quotation from the poet Eileen Myles (another model for the Tomlin character), and like Myles, Weitz suggests there are few other certainties in life. We will grow older, maybe wiser, perhaps a bit more tolerant, but no closer to understanding the stirrings of the human heart. A fun and interesting film awaits ODL members! 5 – 8pm

50+ LGBT Coffee Morning in Wandsworth The Furzedown Project See first Thursday of the month for more info Every Thursday 10am – 12pm Women’s film night: Rafiki Tavis House This month we’ll screen Kenyan film Rafiki (2018). Join us for the social from 6pm and we’ll start the film at 6.30pm. Synopsis: Street – smart tomboy Kena and rainbow – haired free spirit Ziki both dream of a life beyond the stifling confines of their conservative Nairobi neighbourhood. From the moment the two young women meet, the connection is clear and soon their budding friendship blossoms into something more serious.

Torn between the romantic desire to follow their hearts and the pragmatic need to follow their heads, the star – crossed lovers find themselves forced to make an impossible choice between happiness and safety. There is no question that Rafiki is a timely and necessary film. Even before its premiere at Cannes this year, a national ban was enforced for its supposed “intent to promote lesbianism in Kenya, contrary to the law”. Such intolerance only serves as a testament to the unabashed courage director Wanuri Kahiu demonstrates in telling queer stories in a country where gay sex is still a punishable offence. But while her film has inherently political implications, it also signals a new African cinema that is youthful, stylish and thrillingly engaged with pop culture. (The film contains moderate violence and discrimination.) 6 – 8.30pm
