This year is marching along rapidly and as usual we have a fabulous array of activities, events and opportunities to encourage you to get out and get involved! But first, some organisational news: We want to make sure that we hear the voices of our members: so we are dedicating June as Member Feedback Month. This will be when we send out our Annual Member Feedback Form and advertise a number of focus groups. It is really important to us to hear your views – and hope everyone will participate. Our Annual Members Event has moved to October where we will share highlights both from the survey and our future plans. We are looking for more members to join our team as Member Engagement Volunteers. As we grow, it is important to us that we find new ways to ensure that we stay in touch with members – and with nearly 2000 people now part of the ODL community, that is becoming increasingly challenging for our small staff team! So, if you could spare a few hours a week to make some phone calls – please, check out the role description on our website and apply. You will be joining an amazing volunteer team and really making a difference to our community.
Please note that addresses and transport information for all venues are included at the end of the listings.
Do you have access requirements? If there’s an event you’d like to attend, but you’re not sure if you’ll be able to make it due to your access requirements, please, contact us so we can help make sure you get the most out of being part of Opening Doors London. Contact us on 020 7239 0400 or info@openingdoorslondon.org.uk
Feel free to share events, exhibitions and happenings with one another by including them in the Alternative Doors listings. Email: alternativedoors@openingdoorslondon.org.uk
Please book ahead for April Sunday lunch: https://sundaylunchfilmapril.eventbrite.co.uk
ODL is an increasingly diverse community and it is really important to us that we represent and serve a wide range of older people who define themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex, queer, gender fluid, asexual and related terms. Our commitment to inclusivity can be found on our website: http://openingdoorslondon.org.uk/odl-inclusivity-commitment/ I am delighted to welcome two new members of the team: Rachael who is leading our work engaging with people from BAME communities, and Jess who will be leading our work engaging with trans and non-binary people. They are both currently working part-time, but we are hoping to bring in more resources to develop this work. We are committed to the achievement of full human rights and social justice for all LGBT + people - so it is fitting that the Barberfellas' annual concert is taking place at Amnesty International Human Rights Action Centre on Saturday the 23rd of March. ODL is one of two LGBT+ charities that will benefit from any funds raised, so please spread the word and get your friends and family to buy tickets! I went last year and it was a great event. As we continue to develop new services & activities – we are continuously looking to raise new funds. One way you can support us is by making a will. During Free Wills Month, you can have a will written or updated for free with a participating solicitor. We hope you'll consider supporting ODL with a gift in your will, although there's no obligation to do so. The campaign pays for simple wills – if it’s more complex and needs additional work, the solicitor may ask you to pay the balance yourself. It's best to check this when booking your appointment in March. From the first of March, you can visit the Free Wills Month website to see if there are participating solicitors in your area and to find out more about booking an appointment. The campaign is very popular so I recommend booking an appointment as soon as you can in March. Your gift could ensure that ODL continues to support older people from the LGBT+ communities well into the future – what a lovely way to be remembered! Your legacy is our community. ☺ In the meantime we have a month packed with fabulous things to do – enjoy!

The film is directed by Beeban Kidron and documents the lives of those at the women’s peace camp at Greenham Common, Berkshire. Filmed in 1983 its depiction of the women involved in the peace movement contrasts greatly with media portraits of the time, and subsequent collective memory. The screening will be followed by a discussion with special guests on women and protest. More info can be found below: https://www.powthanet.com/events/2019/3/9/carr y-greenham-home-film
