Friday 1 February 10-12pm Alan Turing Dance Project – interviews for members about life before 1967 Mark Smith is looking to record real voices who lived through the time when being gay was illegal. He wants to interview and record people’s experience with the discrimination they faced for being gay before homosexuality was partially decriminalised in 1967. He would love to meet and interview anyone who knows polari language very well and record them speaking in polari. Mark has received an Arts Council Grant to research and develop his idea to create a dance piece inspired by the mathematician, codebreaker and the father of the modern computer Alan Turing. You can learn more about the project: https://deafexplorer.com/artists/mark-smith/ He’s been working with professional dancers, a composer, BSL translator, audio describer & designer from mainstream theatre as well as the mathematician, Marcus du Sautoy, to develop four ideas - Alan’s Letter, Turing’s Machine (Alan’s quote “I want machine to have a heart and soul”), Turing’s Law (Homosexuality Discrimination) and the 3Ms (Movement, Music & Math). There is a video about the workshop here: https://vimeo.com/294011066 Participants Call Out – anyone who is interested in speaking to Mark andcomposer Marcus on February 1st, please, call to office or email Juliet: juliet.chard@openingdoorslondon.org.uk
Southwark Queer Arts Week LGBT+ History Month February 2019 In February 2018 we had the Queer Arts Weekend at the Shortwave Gallery. I have booked the Art Academy Gallery from the 22nd to the 28th February. It’s at the former library building on Walworth Road, Elephant and Castle. The themes for 2019 are Peace, Reconciliation and Activism. The aim is to particularly celebrate two anniversaries: the end of the first world war and the Stonewall riots. More details are available on the website ( lgbthistorymonth.org.uk ). Artists are welcome to submit artwork of any kind using their own LGBTQ+ themes, as well as the official ones. We also want performers for our opening night show. I run an informal art group for Opening Doors London (ODL) in Homerton and help with the social group in Southwark. If you are interested in more information about the 2019 Queer Arts Week or the groups, please, email me, Philippa, at phildpunchard@hotmail.co.uk or tel: 079 515 406 40.
HAPPY NEW YEAR! As we enter 2019 the ODL community continues to grow. We now have a membership of over 1800 – and we continue to reach out to the more isolated members of our communities to let them know they don’t need to be alone and that they can become a member of a very vibrant and welcoming community! Over the next few months I will be working with the team, trustees and members to develop a five-year business plan for ODL. I envisage that we will continue to deliver current services and also continue to explore areas where we can develop new support. Needless to say, I have been having many conversations with many people – and will continue to do so! I am delighted that one of these conversations has resulted in Counselling Service at Age UK Camden committing to work more closely with ODL. This is a free and confi dential service – and could include individual and/or group psychotherapy. Their therapists are familiar with the upheaval that life transitions (which are likely to happen to people 50 and over) can cause to our emotions and feelings, like changes in work and family situations, health issues. Any ODL member who has a GP in Camden can ask for counselling or to join a therapeutic group –please, see the advert on prevous page for more details.
I am so proud of the way ODL is developing – and the way our members get involved in all that we do. The role descriptions can be found on the website – please, have a look! Volunteering with ODL can be great fun and really rewarding – so don’t delay, get involved today! As we develop we need to consider how we fund our services. We will continue to apply for grants and to earn income from delivering training – but we also need to look at other sources. To help us understand your views about giving to ODL it would be really helpful if you could complete this short survey: https://goo.gl/wvozGW. It is completely anonymous and will really help us. I hope, like me, that you are really looking forward to the coming year. In 2019 we can work together to provide opportunities to develop new friendships and to have a lot of fun…and to reach out to more isolated and lonely LGBT+ people who, like us, are 50+. Together we can make ODL an even more amazing community than it already is!
We have new exciting volunteer roles for you to consider! • To make sure that we maintain contact with members as ODL grows we have developed a new volunteer role: Member Engagement Volunteer. If you are confident speaking on the phone and would like to join our amazing volunteer team – please, consider signing up! • ODL regularly hosts arts and outings where we go to exhibitions and events as a group. By popular demand we want to increase the number of outings – so are looking for Arts and Outings Volunteers to help us. So if you enjoy going to art exhibitions and events – please, consider signing up!
