LISTINGS FEBRUARY 2018
Notice for Members
Are you someone who has moved back home after some time away in a larger UK city or abroad? If so, I would love to speak to you for a piece in national publication exploring the LGBTQ experience of going back home. This feature will explore LGBTQ people’s experiences of returning – for the various reasons people do – to live in the locality or town they grew up in. Ideally, you will have returned to where you grew up; somewhere that doesn’t have a big LGBTQ scene (or didn’t back then). I have many years experience of writing LGBTQ stories. If you’d like more information I can be contacted by email homecomers@outlook.com or twitter.com/colincrummy

February can be a difficult time. The weather is throwing all sorts at us, discouraging us to get out and connect with others, just when we really need to! And then Valentine’s Day comes along – but it doesn’t have to be about the Hallmark version of romance. It can be about the 1500+ people receiving this newsletter, and knowing that we all have one thing in common: community. A place to go when we want a reminder that we matter. That our story is important. The one place we have permission to be all that we are. So let’s celebrate that. Let’s celebrate us. Let’s make sure that ODL continues to develop as a vibrant – and safe – community. That’s why we will continue challenging each other, hence the Members Code of Conduct, and mainstream society, hence the launch of an ODL kitemark. Together we can make the world a better, kinder, more loving place.
February is also LGBT History month when we look for fun ways to promote equality and diversity. This year the focus is on ‘Geography: Mapping the World’ … and we hope to be running activities with our corporate partners to raise the profile of the older LGBT communities within their organisations and the wider community. But also look out for our Queer Arts Weekender, 9-10th feb, in Bermondsey, In Conversation with Robert Taylor at Brixton Pound [21st Feb], and the Rainbow Dementia Café here at Tavis House, as well as our amazing range of regular social activities. So, please continue to spread the ODL love: give a leaflet or a copy of The ODL Listings to someone new. We are always happy to send you leaflets to put out and about in your local library or GP practice – just ask one of us. Help other people to connect with this amazing community!

Men’s Films Night: Young Frankenstein Henderson Court Resource Centre Young Frankenstein is a 1974 American comedy horror film directed by Mel Brooks starring Gene Wilder as the title character, a descendant of the infamous Dr. Victor Frankenstein, and Peter Boyle as the monster. The film is an affectionate parody of the classic horror film genre, in particular the various film adaptations of Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein produced by Universal in the 1930s. Young Frankenstein ranks No. 28 on Total Film magazine’s readers’ and No. 13 on the American Film Institute’s list of the 100 funniest American movies. A young neurosurgeon (Gene Wilder) inherits the castle of his grandfather, the famous Dr. Victor von Frankenstein. In the castle he finds a funny hunchback called Igor, a pretty lab assistant named Inga and the old housekeeper, frau Blucher -iiiiihhh!-. Young Frankenstein believes that the work of his grandfather is only crap, but when he discovers the book where the mad doctor described his reanimation experiment, he suddenly changes his mind… Social: 6pm. Film starts: 7pm

London Friend tea & biscuits older LGBT* drop-in London Friend See the 10th for more information. 12.30pm – 2.30pm AIG Film Night screening of In Between (2017) The AIG Building AIG have kindly offered to host a film and some refreshments for members to celebrate LGBT history month. The theme for the month is geography so there will be a screening of acclaimed 2017 film In Between which is set in Tel Aviv focusing on three Palestinian-Israeli women. More details on the film can be found below, or you can watch the trailer here: https://youtu.be/GpUVQMDoewU When devout university student Nour moves in with successful lawyer Laila and club DJ Salma, she is shocked by their partying. As Laila fights to retain her freedom in the face of a new relationship, Salma falls for beautiful trainee doctor Dounia, a romance she must hide from her family. Nour is set for an arranged marriage to Wissam, an exemplary member of the community, who may not be as respectable as he appears.
IN BETWEEN follows the lives of these strong, independent minded Palestinian-Israeli women in Tel Aviv. Away from the constraints of their families and enforced tradition, they find themselves ‘in between’ the free and unfettered lives they aspire to lead and the restrictions imposed on them by a blinkered society. First-time director Maysaloun Hamoud’s honest depiction of the lives of ‘liberated’ Palestinian women in Israel earned her the first Palestinian fatwa in 70 years. 5.30 – 8.30 pm
