The Cinema Museum in Kennington was created by 2 gay men now on their 80s and if you’ve never been...it’s a madly eccentric and magical place that’s really inclusive of everyone and seeks to share a love of cinema inter-generationally. There is reason for hope that the Museum may be saved but the campaign committee is asking us all to find just 1,400 new signatures by 1st March. Please help, and circulate to friends. change.org/p/love-cinema-save-the-cinema-museum

Register for Sunday Lunch and Film Club on in April: april2018odlsundaylunch.eventbrite.co.uk Monday 23rd April 6.30pm-8.30pm Another Kind of Life Community View We have so happy to have been invited for a viewing of Another Kind of Life: Photography on the Margins, at the Barbican! Another Kind of Life follows the lives of individuals and communities operating on the fringes of society from America to India, Chile to Nigeria. The exhibition reflects a more diverse, complex view of the world, as captured and recorded by photographers. Driven by personal and political motivations, many of the photographers sought to provide an authentic representation of the disenfranchised communities with whom they spent months, years or even decades with, often conspiring with them to construct their own identity through the camera lens. Tickets are limited so please ensure that you book yourself a place as soon as possible. anotherlife.eventbrite.co.uk Email linnea.frank@openingdoorslondon. org.uk or call the office on 020 7239 0400 for more information.

International Women’s Day 8th March 2018 Last year it was all about the men! In 2017 we partied to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality for men over the age of 21, and rightly so! As we approach International Women’s Day this month, we are looking forward to some more very significant anniversaries foregrounding the histories and experiences of women. Against a backdrop of celebrating women’s suffrage, with the 100th anniversary of the Representation of the People’s Act giving some women over 30 the vote and the 90th anniversary of the Equal Franchise Act giving the vote to everyone over 21, we will also be remembering the 30th anniversary of Section 28. This stated that Local Authorities ‘shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality’ or ‘promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship’. This laid bare the prejudice at the heart of government against same-sex love, gay families and the entitlement of LGBT+ young people to acceptance and support. It came at a time when the LGBT+ community had become quite fractured, but Section 28 galvanized the community to come together to confront and oppose institutionalised homophobia. In contrast to the situation in 1967 and, particularly as this directly affected the education sector, women were in the forefront of direct action and agitation for change. We are hoping to hold some events in May to remember this time and would welcome anyone who thinks they would like to contribute their experiences. Please email: evelyn.pittman@openingdoorslondon.org.uk
On the subject of women’s voices, we are also currently drawing up a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund to undertake a project around women’s experiences in the LGBT+ community from the time of the Sexual Offences Act in 1967 to the present day. As mentioned, women suffered much the same discrimination as men, but also from wider inequalities: lack of opportunity and inequality of pay at work (still some way to go on that issue!), huge pressure to conform to traditional stereotypes of feminine behavior, and many lesbians also suffered the heartbreak of losing their children in custody cases. It was, however, a time of seismic unrest with second wave feminism and Women’s Lib and many women from our community engaged with these movements. As society began to open up over time to a broader understanding of sexual identity, the voice of trans people began to emerge clearly at last, leading to the current climate where young people feel more able to explore their identities with much more freedom. So, there are a lot of fascinating experiences to collect and record for future generations to understand their history/herstory from firsthand testimonies. Watch this space! Back to International Women’s Day – Opening Doors London will be hosting a number of events and activities this month, including sports taster sessions for women, sessions on women’s health, and women’s film night will be showing Tomboy. Please continue reading for more details.

Wednesday 14th
Tuesday 13th Men’s Speakers Night: Henderson Court Resource Centre After their memorable talk to ODL last year in the run-up to their previous show at the Albany, We Raise Our Hands in the Sanctuary, Inky Cloak are back with a sneak preview of their new play with songs. The show, as yet untitled, explores the interconnected stories of three older LGBTQ people living in contemporary care homes: while fellow residents and staff confine them back in the closet, how will they ever make peace with their troubled pasts, let alone carve out romantic connections in the present?
Inky Cloak artistic directors Daniel Fulvio and Martin Moriarty will talk about what inspired them to develop the new show and share some extracts from the piece, which ODL members would be welcome to read out if they wished. There will then be an opportunity to feedback thoughts and feelings about the show and the issues it explores. A work in progress preview of the new show is on for one night only on Friday 13 April 2018 at the Albany as part of its programme of new writing. Social: 6pm

A biopic can take any life, no matter how transgressive or interesting, and reduce it to check marks on a list. In “Tom of Finland,” a primarily Finnishlanguage feature from Dome Karukoski, the biography is that of Touko Laaksonen (Pekka Strang), the Finnish advertising designer who, under the name Tom of Finland, published drawings of hyper-muscular, well-endowed men and became famous for expanding perceptions on the portrayal of gay life in art. While Mr. Laaksonen devoted his life (192091) to challenging conventions, the film is committed to honoring them.
