s a region, the Madeira Archipelago displays attributes which are unique, from the agricultural viewpoint. It is a relatively small-sized territory with the agricultural structure of a mountain, ranging from the subtropical to moderate cold. These specificities have made many of the agricultural cultures introduced to the island since the time of the first settlers undergo changes and acclimatize to the environment. Nowadays, they possess an acknowledged genetic heritage. In the 1990s, some of these cultures were at risk of vanishing because of the abandonment of agriculture and the ageing of farmers. Fortunately, the love of research saved a great many of them. nquanto região, o Arquipélago da Madeira reúne características únicas do ponto de vista agrícola. Trata-se de um território de tamanho relativamente pequeno, com uma agricultura de montanha que vai desde o subtropical ao temperado frio. Estas particularidades fizeram com que muitas das culturas agrícolas introduzidas na ilha desde o seu povoamento sofressem alterações e se aclimatizassem. Hoje em dia possuem um património genético reconhecido. Na década de 1990, algumas dessas culturas estiveram em risco de desaparecer devido ao abandono da agricultura e ao envelhecimento dos agricultores. Felizmente, o amor pela investigação salvou grande parte delas.
