The real history can’t be denied…

Famous people worldwide who have stated the fact of the Armenian Genocide Orhan Pamuk - Famous Turkish author stated (and was put on trial for making this statement). “…one million Armenians were killed in these lands and nobody but me dares to talk about it.” Theodore Roosevelt “...the Armenian massacre was the greatest crime of the war, and the failure to act against Turkey is to condone it ... the failure to deal radically with the Turkish horror means that all talk of guaranteeing the future peace of the world is mischievous nonsense.”

John Evans “Today I shall call this Armenian genocide. I think that we, the US government, owe you, our fellow citizens, a more straightforward and honest discussion of this problem. I can tell you as a person who has studied this problem - I have no doubts about what happened. I think that it is inappropriate for us, the Americans, to play with words in this case. I believe that we must call a spade a spade.” 10 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

Jimmy Carter “It is generally not known in the world that, in the years preceding 1916, there was a concerted effort made to eliminate all the Armenian people, probably one of the greatest tragedies that ever befell any group. And there weren’t any Nuremberg trials.”

Hillary Clinton “Our common morality and our nations credibility as a voice or human rights challenge us to ensure that the Armenian Genocide be recognized and remembered by the Congress and the President of the United States.” George H.W. Bush “We join Armenians around the world as we remember the terrible massacres suffered in 1915–1923 at the hands of the rulers of the Ottoman Empire. The United States responded to this crime against humanity by leading diplomatic and private relief efforts.”

What to taste in Armenia?

Sonia Tashchyan about Zatik (Easter) traditions in Ancient Armenia Zatik Sweet Pilav

According to the expert of Armenian national cuisine-Sonia Tashchyan, the queen of Armenian traditional Zatik (Easter) table is the rice pilav with dried fruits. This tradition has been the part of each Armenian family throughout the history. The dish is served with fish, greens, dyed egg, sweet bread etc. Easter is called ‘’Zatik’’ in Armenian which means ‘’to separate’’. There have been many ceremonies since prehistoric times which were dedicated to the separation of the spring from the winter period. Before spring sow, the farmer conducted a set of rituals to please the gods; he grew malt and took it to the field to contribute to the element of soil and announce the beginning of the spring with the malt sprouts. The table was decorated with festive flowering tree and bunch of eggs. Rice pilav has always been the main dish to be made. The rice, being a rare staple food, was only used in Armenian cuisine in holidays, and that was a precious seed worth contributing to the gods. What refers to dried fruits, they have been the recollections of the previous year’s fruit harvest, while the round bread Lavash under the dish symbolized the universe. In ancient times the national holidays were celebrated with the presence of the whole community; people gathered together and asked for the spring to come soon thus realizing the universal ideology of the holiday. As the holiday will be celebrated on the 16th of April this year, besides the above pre-Christian tradition, Mrs. Sonia Tashchyan suggested the following recipe for Sweet Rice Pilav to cook for Zatik (Easter).

Ingredients

2 cups rice, 2 t/s butter, 1 cup different dried fruits, raisin, nuts, ½ Lavash bread, salt.

Cooking instructions

Cook the rice in the boiling salt water. When the rice comes to the surface, take it and rinse with cool water and strain. Put butter under the boiler, then cover with the layers of Lavash bread, after which add the semi boiled rice. Close the cover with towel and cook over a low fire approximately 30 min. Cut the dried fruits and fry with ½ butter, add 1 cup of water and continue boiling. Before serving, put Lavash pieces and dried fruit on the ready pilav. Don’t forget to add love while cooking and smile while serving. 14 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

Legends and myths of Armenia

Sister Churches of Ashtarak Town

Legend of Tsiranavor, Karmravor, Spitakavor Karmravor Church-red color of the dress

sacrificed themselves for the sake of the happiness of their younger sister. The two elder sisters wore dresses, one red and the other of the apricot color, and threw themselves into the gorge. The youngest sister fell into despair and putting on a white dress threw herself into the gorge as well. The prince Sargis became a hermit, and three small churches were erected at the edge of the gorge each of them given the name of the dress colors which the sisters wore...

A

shtarak town, situated in Aragatsotn region (marz) of Armenia, is one of the oldest sights of the country mentioned in the ancient scripts. Bronze Age dated statues, residential communities, tombs and other monuments speak about the ancient origin of the town. Ashtarak used to be a powerful residence known with its three churches-Tsiranavor Spitakavor and Karmravor. Tsiranavor is a small church of a cruciform type. The church is constructed from apricot color tufa stone. After the collapse of the roof, drum and dome, only the walls are now standing. What about Spitakavor, once it had white painted faรงade with inscriptions; unfortunately the church is now mostly in ruins. Karmravor, also known as St. Astvatsatsin, is a quite small but very fascinating church. Situated in the northern part of the town, it is a real gem of the 7th century Armenian architecture. This small cruciform domed church has survived to the present time and it is the only monument in Armenia that has retained its original tiled roofing. Unprecedentedly harmonious proportions distinguish this church from the other architectural monuments in Armenia. As the majority of sights in Armenia, these ones also are distinguished with a heart melting legend created around them. In ancient times three sisters lived in the town of Ashtarak. All of them fell in love with the same person, the prince Sargis. The elder sisters decided to help the youngest one and 20 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

Exclusive interview

Eduard Topchjan about music and tourism This month TourInfo magazine had an interview with Eduard Topchjan, the principal conductor and artistic director of the Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra. We talked about his current musical plans and beyond... Maestro Topchjan, thank you for accepting our interview request. Could you please introduce our readers the upcoming musical events to be performed by the Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra? As you know our orchestra consists of professional musicians having this aim to present high quality music and trying to become one of the best orchestras of the world. As usual we are having our regular concerts both in Armenia and abroad. Every Friday I conduct regular performances for general public. Speaking about upcoming concert tours, I can say that this November we are planning to have a tour in Spain and Germany from November 10 to 20, and later in the USA in Carnegie Hall New York and Boston Symphony Hall, where we will have concerts as well. In December-January for the first time the orchestra is planning a tour to China for which I am also very hopeful. Can you tell us a little bit about the new project called the All Armenian Orchestra? I am one of four artistic directors to lead the orchestra. On 24 April I and three other conductors - Karen Durgaryan, Sergey Smbatyan and Constantine Orbelian will join 71 Armenian musicians from 20 countries to unite Diasporan Armenian musicians in one place within the project called “The All Armenian Orchestra”. It will be kind of a good chance to bring together Armenian musicians from all over the world on that very special day creating a new opportunity to Armenian nation to move from a major tragedy in the past into a new renaissance future. Is it possible that music will be an important impulse to increase the number of incoming tourists? 22 TOURINFO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE 22 TOURINFO

Definitely it can be the best impulse: when I was living in Zurich, one of the known train companies organized weekly musical tours to Milan La Scala (Teatro alla Scala) or Berlin Philharmonic… That way they promoted the tourism through music which is a good example for civilized nations. We also have a chance to become an important “musical tourism destination” for the world due to our organized festivals and very good classical music performances. How often do you notice tourists among your audience? Naturally our audience isn’t only made up of local visitors. Often, especially starting from spring until October, many tourists, even from Iran, attend our concerts. Though more often see those from Germany, Russia, Italy and France. As a conclusion, will you please advise us about the main sights of interest you take your foreign guests, lets call them “musician tourists”? When we have foreign artists, our rehearsals schedule is very tight, but we arrange short tours around the sights of interest near Yerevan like St. Edzmiatsin Cathedral, Garni Geghard, sometimes, Lake Sevan. Though due to lack of time during their stay they mainly like walking in the center of our capital Yerevan.

Avanta Dental and Implantology Clinic rated best for service by WhatClinic.com Avanta Dental and Implantology Clinic (address: 5 Zakyan Str., Yerevan, Armenia) has been recognised with an annual award based on patient service excellence ratings from healthcare search engine WhatClinic.com. WhatClinic looked through 12 months data from users of its site, in relation to Avanta Dental and Implantology Clinic including patient review scores, feedback data and clinic contact rates. In 2016 over 17 million people visited the comparison site to find and compare clinics. Avanta Dental and Implantology Clinic was only one of a small number of clinics on the site that met the exacting standards needed to qualify for the award. Not only must the clinic have a consistently high Service Score™ rating to be qualified, but the rating measures the clinic’s commitment to customer service over a whole year, and so represents long term commitment dealing with patients. Less than 2% of clinics on the site were qualified for the award this year. Avanta Dental and Implantology Clinic said today: “We are delighted to be recognised for our commitment to customer service. As a practice, it is something we focus on in everything we do and receiving such positive feedback from our patients is great honor for us and a good motivation to create better conditions for our customers.” WhatClinic.com CEO Caelen King congratulated Avanta Dental and Implantology Clinic and said “Our awards are now in their 7th year, and this year, for the first time - we have made the ratings data that we use to calculate awards visible on our listings. Ratings are useful to both consumers and clinics. Consumers can see which clinics have rated well with lots of other users, and Clinics can evaluate their own performance against others in their

market, ideally with the goal of getting better and better at serving their patients, which is ultimately good for everybody. We believe that by giving consumers as much information as possible we can improve private healthcare services for everyone. With these awards we honour clinics that are dedicated to the highest level of customer care consistently putting the patient at the heart of what they do.” WhatClinic.com is a clinic comparison site that lists over 125,000 clinics globally. Last year over 17 million people visited the site to find, compare and book treatments across a wide range of elective, self-pay medical treatments. WhatClinic.com’s mission is to give the patient, as an empowered consumer, access to all the information they need to make an informed choice, including price, availability and reviews. WhatClinic.com was founded in 2007 by tech entrepreneur Caelen King, and is in operation in over 125 countries.
