Enable your 5 senses

Touch See

The ancient manuscripts and findings were detected during various excavations. They speak about the ancient culture that existed in Armenia thousand years ago.

Visit such museums as Erebuni fortress, History museum, Yerevan history museum, etc.

The oldest cathedrals sunk into the depth of dense forests.

To enable the sense, we suggest Haghartsin monastery in Tavush marz (region) built between 10th and 13th centuries. Traditionally, an eagle was soaring over the dome of the main building at its dedication and thus it became commonly known as the monastery of the playing (or soaring) eagle (“Hagh” means a game while “Artsin” a form of “Artsiv” means eagle in Armenian).

Smell

The aroma of lavash bread and Khorovats baked and cooked in tonir. Take part in the baking process of lavash in one of the villages like Garni for the experience.

Taste Hear The yummy dishes of Armenian cuisine. Have your lunch or dinner in any Armenian restaurant like Caucasus, Carahunge, Cascade Royal, the Wine House or else to satisfy your sense of taste.

The sound of both folk music played with duduk and songs sung during the holy liturgy. Attend Sunday liturgy in any Armenian Apostolic church to hear the holy sounds. Go to Yerevan Duduk festival on 13 and 15 October.

Welcome to Armenia to enable your senses and feel all the pleasures of life! 14 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

What to taste in Armenia?

Let’s make Ghavurma

L

ike many Armenian food terms, Ghavurma can mean something different depending on the region or even village an Armenian family comes from. It’s always some form of cooked lamb, but to us Ghavurma is the rich, fat-enveloped favorite from the city where many Armenians originated: Dikranagerd. Preserving meat in fat has been a tradition for Armenians throughout long centuries.

Ingredients • • • • •

1 leg of lamb 1 apple, any kind, cut into quarters (quince can also be used when in season) Water Flank fat (order from the butcher ahead of time), but if flank fat is unavailable, use unsalted butter Salt (to taste)

Preparation • Trim the leg of lamb to remove skin • Cut meat into approximately 2-inch squares • Place cubes of meat into a large pot and cover meat with water. Bring to a boil. Cook for about 15 minutes. • Remove meat and rinse with cold water • Clean the pot, return meat to the pot, add fresh water, salt, and the apple pieces. Cook until meat is fork tender, about 1 ½ hours • Add flank fat, if you were able to get it, otherwise add 1 lb. of butter. Continue to cook for a while - keep your eye on it! • Place cooked meat in a non-metallic bowl (for ex: Corning ware). Press meat as you place in the bowl, so fat rises to the top. The fat must cover the meat. This keeps air out, acting as a preservative • Cover tightly and refrigerate. The longer it sets in the refrigerator, the better it is!

And don’t forget to add love while cooking and smile while serving)) 20 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

Prominent Armenians

Arshile Gorky

A great Armenian-American artist of the 20th century

A

rshile Gorky was a major figure in surrealism and one of the founders of the abstract expressionism movement. He is considered one of the great Armenian-American artists of the 20th century. Born as Vosdanig Manoug Adoyan in the Ottoman Empire between 1902 and 1904, he was an eyewitness to the Armenian Genocide, during which his mother died of starvation. He immigrated to the United States an orphan and changed his name to start anew, though the horrific experiences of his early years would remain with him and even influence his art. After enrolling in art school, Gorky began showing off his talent through various exhibitions. Although he was strongly influenced by Pablo Picasso and Paul Cezanne, he gradually developed a distinctive style that secured him a place among the best artists of his time. The active domestic and international art scene that converged upon New York City, where Gorky lived, led to a friendship with Dutch artist Willem de Koonig and an occasionally fierce rivalry with Jackson Pollock. Severely depressed after a number of personal tragedies, including the destruction of many of his paintings in a studio fire, Gorky committed suicide. His work continues to be exhibited in major museums across the world.

Dilijan National Park

D

ilijan National Park is a unique site of Armenia’s wildlife, which stands out by the wealth of original biodiversity, mezophile woodlands, separate ecosystems of scientific, educational and economic interest, as well as by its patrimonial, environmental, cognitive, curative and recreational assets. Dilijan National Park is situated on the northern side of the Republic, on the mountainside of Pambak, Aregouni, Miapor ranges, halfway between Aghestev and Getik rivers watersheds, 1000-2200m above sea level. The imperative need of protecting original woodlands in Northern Armenia was formulated as early as in 1958. To this end, Dilijan State forest-reserve was founded on an area belonging to Dilijan Forestry and on nearby public forest estates. Nevertheless, it was impossible to apply strict protection requirements on a site held as Armenia’s leading recreational zone for its landscape resources of medicinal interest and unique historical and cultural monuments, which is host of numerous health resorts and recreational facilities. The territory of the protected area was under high human pressure. The requirements set for site protection were violated in mass. Almost all forms of nature exploitation were used (cattle-grazing, hay-making, holiday-making, etc.). To address the above-said legislative variances and harmonize environmental and nature exploitation-related functions, the Government decided to re-organize Dilijan State-protected area into National Park in 2002. The chief purpose behind the establishment of Dilijan National Park was to provide for normal ecosystem development, landscape and biodiversity conservation, as well as protection of historical and cultural patrimony in Aghestev and Getik river basins.

36 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

The protective measures have as a target the protection of mezophile forests of Caucasian type, the conglomerations of beeches and oak-trees, exceptional alley of keni-trees, the unique forest fauna and original cultural and historical monuments. The park area is divided into 3 territorialfunctional zones: protected area, recreational zone and economic section. Any activity susceptible to impair natural ecosystems equilibrium or put at risk the survival of monuments of scientific and cultural interest is prohibited in the protected area. Human activities here are confined to scientific research and tourism. National holidays

Holy Translator’s day

It

was 405AD when Mesrop Mashtots created Armenian Alphabet. This opened a new era of prosperity for the Armenian literature. Mersop Mashtots and Sahak Partev undertook a giant work to translate various books into Armenian language. The first book was the Holy Bible. A group of translators translated the Old Testament, while Mesrop Mashtots translated the New Testament.

The translated version of the Bible was so pure, that it was called “The Queen of Translations” («Թարգմանչաց Թագուհի»). The translators of the Holy Bible were canonized by the Armenian Church. Since the 5th century, the Holy Translator’s Day or Targmanchats has been celebrated on the second Saturday in October to commemorate the people, who created the Armenian alphabet and became the founders of Armenian literature, written language and schools.

• • • • • •

The Holy Translators are: Mesrop Mashtots Sahak Partev Movses Khorenatsi Yeghishe David the Invincible Nerses IV the Gracious

The celebrations will be held on 14 October in all Armenian churches around the country and outside.

The first translated sentence from Solomon’s Book of Proverbs: “To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding.”

ARGISHTI THE 1ST “By the greatness of the God Khaldi, Argishti, son of Menua, built this mighty stronghold and proclaimed it Erebuni for the glory of Biainili (Urartu) and to instill fear among the king’s enemies. The land was a desert, before the great works I accomplished upon it. By the greatness of Khaldi, Argishti, son of Menua, is a mighty king, king of Biainili, and ruler of Tushpa.”

2750 FOUNTAINS

On October 17 at Erebuni hill the first ceremony of the series of events dedicated to 2750 th jubilee of Yerevan was started. It was the Festival of Flowers: 2750 trees were planted. Erebuni street was opened. A citywide festival of song was held in “Haghtanak” park, the choir of 2750 singers had sung for the first time the song by Edgar Hovhannisyan “ErebuniYerevan.” On this day 2750 flowers decorated the front entry of “Haghtanak” park and in the square adjacent to former Lenin statue, 2750 fountains were put into operation.

THE SEAL The Seal of Yerevan shows a winged Erebuni lion with a bronze shield having a blue circumference. The lion has the tree of life as a crown, holds a power staff, and has a shield encompassing the symbol of eternity and the Ararat mountains on its chest. The text with the blue background below it spells Yerevan in Armenian letters. The seal’s final design was approved on September 27, 2004. The emblem on the flag is performed in apricot and bronze colors with the blue border line: the co-authors used the colors of the national flag in order to emphasize the metropolitan importance of the flag. The co-authors of the flag are Karapet Abrahamyan and Karapet Pashyan.

ALEXANDER TAMANYAN Map of Yerevan was made before the Soviet reconstruction of the city by Alexander Tamanyan in 1924. Taken looking west, with the Hrazdan River to the north rather than the west, the map is like a sun with shining rays.

HOLY MOUNT ARARAT It is widely considered the country’s principal national symbol and brand. Ararat is known as the “holy mountain” of the Armenian people. It was principal to the preChristian Armenian mythology, where it was the home of the gods. With the rise of Christianity, the mythology associated with pagan worship of the mountain was lost. Ararat was the geographical center of ancient Armenian kingdoms. If you are lucky enough, the clouds will clear up and you will enjoy the whole beauty of the mountain. This year on 14 October we are celebrating the 2799th birthday of our beloved capital city-Yerevan. Participate the events available overleaf. 68 TOURINFO MAGAZINE
