Tiarn’ndaraj - the Feast of the Lord’s Presentation to the Temple

T

his is an early episode in the life of Jesus that is celebrated by the Christian Church. Armenian Apostolic church celebrates the feast on 14 February. This religious holiday called Tiarn’ndaraj in Armenian and known as Candlemas in the West, symbolizes the presentation of the 40 day-old Christ Child to the Temple in Jerusalem. Mary and Joseph brought the holy baby to the Temple and an old man called Simeon, who had been promised not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ, welcomed them. In the tradition of the Church, Evening Services (Nakhatonak) are conducted on the night preceding the Feast Day. The morning of the Feast DayDivine Liturgy is celebrated in Armenian Apostolic Churches throughout the world. “Tiarn’ndaraj” is also related to mainly Armenian holiday “Trndez”. Though having pagan background, the holiday is made Christian and now is celebrated for young new married or engaged couples on 13 February. The symbol of the day is campfire. All believe in purifying and healing traits of it and all participants mainly bride and groom jump over it. While the couples are jumping, people surrounding them throw grain on them symbolizing fertility to their new family. When the fire is put out, the ash is gathered to spread along the valleys to bring good harvest on that year. If you are in Armenia and want to see some new traditions and way of the celebrations of this holiday, believe, you should take part in this holy ceremony. If you don’t afraid to get burnt, then jump over the fire, keep a wish and the whole energy of the fire and your mind will bring it to reality. Happy “Tiarn’ndaraj” / “Trndez”.

Legends and myths of Armenia

Saint Sarkis - Legend and traditions There are also some traditions and ceremonies which are kept and performed by Armenians. The widely known holiday is celebrated among not married boys and girls. There is a tradition to eat a salty biscuit in the previous night of St. Sargis and not to drink any water, and one will marry the person who brings water in his/her dream. Another activity which should be taken on this day is to put a plate of roasted wheat flour

S

t. Sargis is lovers’ saint who makes love dreams come true. There are different legends and stories related to him. According to one of them, a poor ashough Gharib was in love with a rich man’s daughter Shah-Sanami. She also loved him but as the ashough was poor, girl’s father didn’t let them marry as he wanted to marry daughter with a rich man. Ashough decided to earn money abroad but before leaving, he asked the girl to promise to wait 7 years for him to come back, and told to marry another man if he was late even a day. 7 years were passing with great difficulties and ashough Gharib didn’t have any news from his lover but didn’t loose his faith to go back and marry her. 7 years passed, he gained the desired wealth but the way back was dangerous and filled with obstacles making ashough feel to never reach his lover. Ashough Gharib in despair prayed to St. Sargis asking for his support. Saint Sargis, hearing the prayer, appeared on his white horse and took the lover to Shah-Saname. Girl’s father saw ashough Gharib’s faith and curiosity, the true love and devotion and blessed the couple.

in a balcony and if St. Sargis leaves the trace of his horseshoe on the flour, the daydreams of the young boy/girl of the family come true. This year the holiday will be celebrated on 11 February. Armenian Soup “Spas”

pas (spahs) is Armenian famous soup served warm in the winter and chilled during summer months. Sometimes called “tahnabour or madzoon abour”, this is a classic soup of Armenian cuisine. It’s made with typical Armenian yogurt like cream called “matsun” and wheat grain seasoned with mint or cilantro. There are several recipe variations. Some use parsley, others use cilantro or incorporate mint. Egg or wheat is necessary if the soup is hot; it keeps “matsun” (yogurt) from curdling.

Cooking instructions Cook wheat in 4 cups of water or broth until tender. Blend “matsun’’ (yogurt), water, egg and flour with a beater. Cook until it boils and stir constantly with a wooden spoon. Add salt, cooked wheat and remove from heat. Add butter, mint and parsley and simmer five minutes. Especially in this cold days serve the dish with warmth, love and smile.

Ingredients 2/3 cup hulled wheat 3 cups yogurt (Typical Armenian “matsun’’ called yogurt like cream) 3 cups water or chicken broth 1 egg 2T flour ½ tsp salt 4T butter 1 T mint (chopped) 1/3 T parsley or cilantro (chopped) 14 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

ARMENIA: THE BEST PLACE FOR DENTAL TOURISM AND MORE...

A

huge number of tourists get on a plane from around the world with an expectation to pass so much desired holidays as well as possible, but not always their wishes are only connected with having a good time. Though medical tourism is rather young field of tourism industry for us, it has already formed a large scope of demand in our country. During the recent years the field has increased its levels, but all in all it’s still not satisfactory for Armenia. Our country can provide such conditions as national customs, clean ecology, healthy food etc. to attract foreign tour-operators. We can offer not only eco-tourism, spa services or special organized tour packages for better holidays, but also unique tours to improve general health conditions such as stomatological problems, heart diseases, and to provide surgical and aesthetic interventions. Our country has giant potentialities due to our spa towns such as Tsaghkadzor, Arzni, Jermuk, Dilijan, as well as Stepanavan, which can serve as perspective for the sustainable development of medical tourism. Clean air, organic food, variety of mineral waters and, of course, qualified medical services. Medical treatment in Armenia is the combination of quality and reasonable prices which make the field more attractive for visitors. Of course, this can’t be satisfactory ground for the development of tourism in the country, because of being only small part of recourses. It’s necessary to run an aggressive strategy of advertising campaign through better arranged projects, and provide other promoting conditions. Now Armenia is in a level, when tourists come for dental tourism. The representatives of Armenian Diaspora visit both to have a rest in a motherland and take care of their teeth. We are proud that tourists are satisfied with our dental services and mention that our service 24 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

quality doesn’t yield the service provided abroad, and though the used equipments are of modern and high quality, the prices are not expensive and rather reasonable if compared with the ones abroad being an advantage for us because the same treatment in Armenia costs lower than elsewhere. We do our best to satisfy our guests through suggesting a full package of medical tourism services including hotel booking, transfer to the airport and visa verse, different tours around Yerevan and sightseeing of regions around Armenia, online consultancy, treatment plan drawing etc. The medical services are provided and implemented within short period of time solving the problem of translator for foreigners if needed. Our services provide a whole range of dental treatments including tooth implantation and tooth aesthetic restoration which is a unique support for the visitors of our country. If needed, spa-procedures shall be offered for the treatment of certain diseases both in the capital and Jermuk, Arzni etc. Mineral-thermal waters, which our country boasts, sometimes work miracles. Armenia has all possibilities to develop medical tourism because the perspectives are promising in the case of providing sufficient professional attitude.
