National holidays in August

A

Navasard and Grape Blessing rmenia has a bulk of national holidays covering different traditions and habits of the national culture. If you are interested in the upcoming national holidays, we have 2 main ones in August to suggest. The first one is Navasard and the other one is the Grape Blessing.

Navasard (pre-Christian holiday)

The holiday of Navasard celebrated on 11 August is an ancient Armenian New Year, symboling Hayk Nahapet’s (the legendary patriarch of the Armenian people) victory over the Babylonian tyrant Bel. According to a legend, about 4,500 years ago Hayk Nahapet defeated Bel’s army, which marked the dawn of the Armenian Republic. The word itself is defined as nava — new and sard — year. On that day, festivities were held throughout the Armenian territory: both the royal court, the soldiers and ordinary people celebrated the holiday. This holiday was devoted to the pagan gods. People believed that gods came down to earth and bathed in Aratsani River. It was common to sacrifice an ox to the gods, and its blood was used to mark the foreheads of the holiday participants. According to tales, on that day the tables could even collapse under the weight of various dishes, sweets and dried fruit. Royal hunting and horseracing were important events during the holiday feast. Today Navasard is celebrated by various groups of people in Armenia and diaspora.

Grape blessing (Assumption of Mary) The ceremony of Grape Blessing is among the most beloved ceremonies of the Armenian traditional feasts, held on Sunday usually following or preceeding August 15. The occasion on which we celebrate the blessing of grapes is a major feast day called “Assumption of the St. Mary”. According to some ethnographic sources, the history of Grape Blessing dates back to the paganism that had much in common with the traditional Christmas and especially with the beliefs of abundance and richness of fruits and grapes which was believed to be the noblest one among the other fruits. Moreover, on the Feast of Assumption of St. Mary the harvest was blessed. Due to another sources, grapes do have a certain symbolic significance in Christianity... think of all the references which Jesus made to wine… Time passed and the pagan holiday was included in the calendar of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Grape has a symbolic significance considered to be “forbidden fruit” and people must refuse to eat grapes until the priest blessed it. This year we celebrate the holiday on 13 August. You can also be the part of it if attend the ceremony in any Armenian apostolic church on that day.

What to taste in Armenia?

Apricot-Glazed Chicken

I

f you want to be creative and serve a dinner for your family in Armenian style, we suggest an apricot-glazed chicken. The apricot glaze will coat the plump chicken breasts sat in the refrigerator. Rice cooked in chicken broth enhanced with peas and finely chopped sun-dried tomatoes will be a great side dish for our main dish.

Ingredients • 1 tbsp. honey • 1 tbsp. Dijon mustard • 2 tbsp. apricot preserves/jam • ¾ tsp. reduced-sodium soy sauce • 3 tbsp. panko bread crumbs • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, about 1 lb. (rinse chicken and pat dry)

Preparation • Preheat oven to 375°F (190oC). • In a small bowl, mix together the honey, mustard, apricot preserves, and soy sauce, blending well • Place the breadcrumbs in a separate small bowl. • Coat a baking pan (the kind with sides) with vegetable spray. Arrange the chicken breasts in the pan. • Spread the apricot-honey mixture on the top of each chicken breast. Pat the breadcrumbs onto the glaze mixture. • Bake for about 25 to 30 minutes, making sure the chicken is cooked through, and a golden crust has formed on top. This recipe creates its own sauce, so spoon some on the top of each portion for extra flavor and moisture. Simple and delicious, isn’t it?

P.S. Add love while cooking and smile while serving)) 20 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

fficially called Sochut Dendropark commonly known as Stepanavan Dendropark. The arboretum is located near Gyulagarak village, Lori marz (region), about 85 km north of the capital Yerevan. The park was founded in 1931 by Polish engineer-forester Edmund Leonowicz. The arboretum is 35 ha in total; 17.5 ha consist of natural forest and 15 ha of ornamental trees. The collection of numerous plants and trees is expanded along the newly constructed footpaths and vistas, which began to reach into the natural forest. Dendropark is thought to be the first place in the Trans Caucasus, where a natural forest landscape had been reshaped into a Forest Park. The Stepanavan Dendropark consists of deciduous forest and ornamental plantings with avenues of Lime (Tilia cordata), and wild sourced specimens of Juglans, Malus, Populus and Pyrus. Most specimens were acquired from other botanic gardens as part of international exchange programs with the Botanic Garden in Georgia, Ukraine, Crimea, Leningrad, Moscow and so on. Specimens were also obtained from Germany, France, Portugal, China and the United States. There are now more than 500 introduced species. The arboretum is home to not only various plants brought from different angles of the world, but to a great number of native species. It is notable that Armenia is an important center of pear diversity with over 20 known species. The arboretum is of interest to the general public, professional scientists and eco-tourists. If you want to not only breath the freshest air full of oxygen, but also study adaptive characteristics of different plants to the new environmental conditions, here that opportunity will be given to you. It is also possible to conduct training programs for student internships and study the distinctive flora of the Trans Caucasus region. Prominent Armenians

VAHAN CARDASHIAN

Founder of the first Armenian-American lobby

“Force alone can achieve independence, but it alone cannot keep it. Sound leadership, good diplomacy and economic independence, plus force, retain political independence.” V. Cardashian V. Cardashian, the Armenian-American political activist and lawyer, born in Caeasarea (modern-day Kayseri) in 1883, moved to the United States and was subsequently admitted to the Yale Law School, where he began writing. Cardashian spoke no English when he arrived in America, but through diligent study, he was able to become fluent and eloquent in written and spoken English. After graduation, he started working at the Ottoman Embassy in Washington, DC, but soon got word that his mother and sister had been murdered during the Armenian Genocide. He used his position to secretly inform others about the violence, but the Ottoman ambassador found out and fired him. Cardashian established the American Committee for the Independence of Armenia (ACIA) and lobbied leaders in the United States to support Armenia’s independence. He amassed an impressive cadre of well-known and respected

34 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

Americans to serve on ACIA’s board, which helped to elevate the issue within the upper authorities of American government. Even after the independence of Armenia in 1918, Cardashian continued his lobbying efforts, particularly to secure an American mandate over Armenia and Armenian provinces in the defunct Ottoman Empire. In both his and others’ view, this would prevent Russian or Turkish aggression. Unfortunately, the United States delayed any decision on establishing a mandate and securing an enlarged Armenian territory as proposed by President Woodrow Wilson - what would become known as “Wilsonian Armenia.” The ACIA set the groundwork for continued lobbying efforts by Armenian-Americans in the future. It is seen as the predecessor of the modern-day Armenian-American advocacy organization, the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).

Legends and myths of Armenia

Duduk

D

uduk or also otherwise called as Tsiranapogh is a famous Armenian national instrument known around the world. The Armenian oboe is a doublereed wind instrument characterized by a warm, soft, slightly nasal timbre. The roots of Armenian duduk music go back to the times of the Armenian king Tigran the Great (95-55 BC). In 2008, the instrument was inscribed on the representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO. There are different stories and legends related to this legendary instrument, here is one of them: “Once upon a time Young Wind was flying over the picturesque mountainous area. Suddenly he saw a tree of an amazing beauty. Never before had he seen such a beautiful tree and got strongly impressed. Playing with its delicate flower petals and lightly touching the leaves, the Wind removed amazing tunes. When the Supreme Wind heard about that, he got very angry and furiously

36 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

destroyed almost all the vegetation of that area. The Young Wind did his best to save the tree, announcing that he was ready to do anything to save it. After hearing these words, the Supreme Wind said: “You can stay here but you will never be able to fly”. Delighted, the Wind agreed to part with his wings, but the master stopped him with the words: “Your wings will stay with you, and you can take wing as soon as you wish, but once you do, your tree will die.” The Young Wind was not upset, as he was glad to stay with the tree and not to lose his wings. The days passed, autumn came. The tree lost all its beautiful flowers and leaves which had been cheering the Wind up. He felt so bored while his brothers were having fun tearing the last leaves from the trees. The Wind could not bear anymore and joined them. At that moment, the amazing tree died, and only a small branch was left. After a while, a small boy seeking for brushwood found that brunch and made a small reed pipe from it. It was duduk, the producer of amazing sounds...”

Armenian National Costume:

Taraz

N

ational costume (Taraz) is one of the greatest aspects of our culture. Armenian Taraz is unique with its design, colors and origin. Our national costumes reflect a number of cultural traditions and habits. The main materials for Armenian wear are wool, cotton and fur. The silk dresses were made for rich people. Before having a silk production, we imported silk from China through the silk road. From the early periods, Taraz was adopted to the climate of each region around Armenia. The main classifications were due to gender, social class, region, etc. While describing the style of the costume, we can say that it is a loose garment with grooves. Dominant colors are black, white, red and yellow. According to the XIV century Armenian philosopher Grigor Tatevatsi, each color refers to a certain phenomenon: the black refers to the earth, the white to water,

66 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

the red to the air and the yellow to the flame. There are other symbolizations as well. For example, the purple is the symbol of wisdom, the red of bravery, the blue of heavenly justice and the white of prudence. Interesting was the fact that the color and form of Armenian national wear could help to know whether the person is married or not, how many children he/she has and so on, which made the role of taraz much more important in Armenian lifestyle. For example, the essential part of women’s dress was the apron, on each corner of which a life tree is growing from the decoration patterns. This composition of ornaments expressed the idea of prosperity‌ We can say much more about Taraz, but it is better to see once, than read twice. To get a close understanding of our National Costume, you just need to become the participant of Taraz Festival in August 5th, at 18:00-22:00, in Northern Avenue, Yerevan.
