DOLLS’ GALLERY

Time for a fairy tale

O

n 21 March 2017, on the World Puppetry Day, the first Gallery-Museum of DollsNuri’s Dolls opened its doors to the public in Yerevan, Armenia. TourInfo visited the gallery to get a clear idea about this unique place. When we were guided around the gallery by Marina Khachmanukyan, the head of the gallery, she provided such interesting information about the gallery and, in general, doll-making traditions of Armenia that we would like to share with you, dear reader. The dolls gallery is the 1st in its kind of cultural institution in Armenia. Here the dolls are presented as historical, cultural and artistic value. Armenian ceremonial, traditional dolls, souvenirs, dolls with Armenian traditional costumes as well as the dolls of famous actors and political figures are all exhibited in different halls of the gallery. In 1921 the greatest poet of Armenia Hovhannes Tumanyan resided this house. Today heroes from Tumanyan’s fairy taleQaj Nazar (Brave Nazar) and his wife Ustian are exhibited in one of the halls. You know, Mrs. Khachmanukyan informed us that Armenians are making dolls which are related to different natural phenomenon like rain and drought from early times. The dolls are named differently and various traditions are related to them. Nuri is one of the most famous 8 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

dolls. It is also called Bride of Rain because during the drought she was the only one to bring rain to the peasants in old times. According to the tradition, she appeared both during Tsaghkazard holiday and when there was a drought. Based on the national ideology, Nuri was pretty and cute. She was kind and gracious. When people and animals were suffering from the drought, the rain was falling from her eyes bringing happiness and life to them. In the Dolls’ Gallery there is a separate corner for this unique doll and other traditional and national dolls as well. As you noticed, the name of the gallery is after her-Nuri. Adjacent to the gallery you can find an interactive studio for children. While you are discovering the touristic attractions around the city, your children can play, paint and just have some fun. When in Yerevan and want to go somewhere extraordinary, informative and interactive, the Dolls’ Gallery would be the best choice for you and your children. P.S. We would like to note, that one of the Armenian heroes- Adam Sahakyan, who died during the four-day war of Artsakh in 2016, lived in the building of the gallery. At the entrance door, there is a sign indicating this fact.

It’s stated to be older than Rome‌ The Republic Square of the modern Yerevan was earlier designed by Alexander Tamanian in 1924. The square consists of two sections. The oval roundabout that has a stone pattern in the center, meant to look like a traditional Armenian rug from above, the trapezoidshaped section which contains the dancing fountain in front of the History Museum and the National Gallery. The buildings around the square are made of pink and yellow tuff stones, fortified on basalt making ground anchor.

It was 2003 when the square undergone the latest restoration. While digging the ground, the remnants of destroyed underground premises were found. The findings were made of black and red tuff stones. The found buildings speak about the architectural features which were typical to the civil buildings and the lifestyle of Yerevan from the 18th-19th centuries. All the excavations were made by the archeologists of the institute of archeology and ethnography of Armenia, and by the administration for the preservation of historical and cultural monuments. Today our beautiful square stands shining through the lights of the streets and its historical and administrative buildings. Legends and myths of Armenia

P

Legend of Proshaberd fortress

roshaberd also known as Boloraberd is a 13th century built fortress in Vayots Dzor marz (region), Armenia. The fortress was built by Prince Prosh after whom the name derives meaning “the fortress of Prosh”. The walls of the fortress were made of basalt and there were water supplies which are still preserved. Unfortunately the whole inner structures were destroyed and buried under the thick soli layer. The folklore of Proshaberd refers to the times when it was besieged by Persians. They attempted to bring the fortress down. The leader of the Persian forces decided to cut off the water supply to reach his goal. What should be done was clear to the leader, but no trace of the water supply was found. Then the leader was advised to keep a mule thirsty for seven days and nights. After that he should let the animal go to find water. This worked. The mule went exactly where the water supply was, and so they cut the supply

24 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

and as a result, the fortress surrendered… There is also another story related to prince Prosh who managed to hide his treasures in the surrounding mountains, canyons and the walls of the fortress. People say that those who could read the signs left by him managed to easily find the treasures. Though the talks about the treasures didn’t go beyond the myths, there is a little story worth telling. According to it, there was a little khachkar (a cross-stone) with a strange sculpture on it. There was a carved globe with a snake rolling around the upper side of the cross-stone. Below the globe there was an inscription: “The treasure is in my head.” No one paid any attention to it thinking that the khachkar was a scientist’s grave. While it’s said that years ago the heavy rainfall caused the khachkar to break and 3 kg of gold was found from its upper part. Likely, it was only the little part of prince Prosh’s legendary treasures.

The bard of the Caucasus Sayat Nova

H

arutyun Sayatyan or otherwise known as Sayat Nova was an Armenian famous bard who composed music in several Caucasian languages: Armenian, Georgian and Turkish. He created timeless music which is widely played and adapted to our days. His works are the greatest example of the Armenian folk music. The musician was born in Tbilisi to Armenian parents. Besides writing and singing songs, he also played Armenian and Caucasian musical instruments. The repertoire of the great composer was made up of songs, ballads, and sonnets about love and life. As he was the minstrel of Georgia’s royal family, he fell in love with the king’s sister: Anna. Many love songs were devoted to her. Unfortunately, Sayat Nova was expelled when his romantic feelings became known to the king. Later on, Sayat Nova became a monk and spent his last years

36 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

at Haghpat Monastery (UNESCO sight, Lori marz (region), Armenia). While visiting the Monastery, you can see the little room where Sayat Nova was living. The musical-cultural impact which Sayat Nova had not only on the Armenian culture but also other neighboring Caucasian countries, is undeniable. Though each country says that Sayat Nova was of their nationality, he, undoubtedly, was of Armenian descent. Sayat Nova was executed by Khan Qajar, a Persian ruler, who was invading the Caucasian countries and trying to make the people cast off their religion and accept Islam. Sayat Nova was one of those who refused and that’s why was murdered. To get a close understanding of Sayat Nova’s works, you are welcomed to “Sayat Nova Festival” which will be held in Yerevan from 1618 June. To get detailed information about the event, see the ad overleaf: page 34.

Traditional Armenian wedding in the 21st century

W

edding is a great ceremony for all people around the world. Especially for Armenians it is one of the most important traditions to celebrate for several days. There are two main pre-wedding traditions before the actual wedding: the betrothal and engagement. After the groom’s family asks for the bride’s hand in marriage (traditionally this is called “Khosk-Kap” within Armenians), they decide the day of the engagement and wedding itself. There are some old traditions which are still preserved in several regions of Armenia with slight variations. One of them is “Red and green ribbon ceremony.’’ In the old times the crown which was placed on bride and groom’s head during the wedding ceremony in the church, was made of white, green and red threads which symbolized peace, life and sacrifice. After the wedding ceremony the couple and the guests usually go to groom’s house. Upon their arrival some traditions with Lavash bread, honey, plates and beyond take 70 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

place till nowadays. Specifically, motherin-law puts Lavash on the just married couple’s shoulders which symbolizes prosperity. Motherin-law gives a spoon of honey to each to make their lives sweet. While entering the house, two plates are put on the entrance which the couple should brake to perish the evil. Armenian weddings are like feasts full of flowers, food, drink and music. The main dish to be served is Armenian traditional “Khorovats” which is brought to the ceremony hall under the tunes of its own song “Khorovats is the best dish” (“Khorovatse shat lav ban e”). The most important couples after the bride and groom are godfather and godmother. They should be the closest married couple known by the groom and bride. The Godfather should give the most expensive wedding gift. By the way, giving presents is a separate tradition during the wedding when all guests are invited to hand their gifts. After officially getting married, the couple starts to live with the groom’s parents.
