“The Suffragette” David Bowie was a truly unique music and style icon. His career, spanning six decades, was defined by reinvention and visual presentation. His life and music influenced so many peop; including me. After Bowie’s passing early this year, I spent a lot of time listening and looking back on his career. Another icon was gone. I was watching a YouTube clip from the early 70s of Bowie performing the hit “Suffragette City” as his androgynous alter ego, Ziggy Stardust. I tried to find the meaning to the lyrics—which Bowie never explained—and started reading about the incredible women of the Suffragette movement in the very early 1900’s; those who fought for the right for women to vote. A movement defined by extraordinary acts of daring and bravery from some totally fearless and truly remarkable women. Meanwhile—with the world following the American Presidential Campaign, which was in full swing at the time of conception—I was being shocked on a daily basis by the horrendous words and actions of then President Elect Donald Trump. So it seemed, a hundred years on, the world still needs its own suffragettes. Women may have the vote (in most countries), but women worldwide are still fighting for that most basic right: to be treated as equals. It was a combination of these two things that inspired my collection: Bowie & The Suffrogettes: both bonafide ‘punks’ of their own eras. —Sam James

Winter Fashion Faux Fur Once upon a time fur coats were a niche look: it was either super rich socialite chic, OR granny-style. So if you secretly loved fur coats, but were neither a granny nor a rich socialite, instead working 9-5, or just had a strong penchant for fashion well then that’s too bad for you. But sometime circa 2013 though, fashion decided enough is enough! Everyone wants to look like a million bucks—and from where we’re standing there are more gals out there who love luxe then those who don’t—and you really don’t need to wait until you make your
first million, or reach the beautiful age of say 60, to be socially acceptable in a fur coat. So, for the last 5 years or so, fur coats have been the “it” coats of winter, and 2017 is no stranger to that. In fact we think fur coats have never been more of a staple than they are today. Especially the vintage style, and the brown-nude-latte-white-creamy-tone. The downside of it, though, is finding the right one without breaking the bank. So you can either chase the retail chains for latest faux fur trends out there, or just find a great fur sale to get your lust quenched.
How to Wear a Fur Coat? The glam look. When you’re dressed to the nines and a fur coat is pretty much the only stylishly acceptable coat: silky dress, high slit, stiletto sandals or over the knee boots, jewellery, bold lips. Somewhere between a Monte-Carlo-rich-look, and a posh winter evening out look. The sophisticated look. It’s sort of like your work outfit or your fashion-week-kinda-of-style topped off with a fur coat. For example: flirty dresses, boots, leather pants, button-downs, chunky sweaters, heels, beanie hats, jeans, crop tops. In other words – do you! Only with a fur coat. The cool-casual look. This look is the easiest and best by far; just because it’s so effortless, easy to do and there is no wrong way about it; though it helps if you naturally have style. This is the winter going-shoppinglook, meeting friends, running errands, etc. Try it with boyfriend jeans, sneakers, boots, activewear, baseball hats, sweaters, sweatshirts, T-shirts. So… it’s fashion without being too fashion. This one is the 2017 look!

1. Velvet dresses—These are already the star of 2017, and we could bet billions (we don’t have) that it’ll be one of the most-done looks this year. Whether it’s a slip dress in velvet or a wrap dress with spaghetti straps, long sleeves, short, maxi, or midi, we’re sure it’ll be the “it” look at every party this year. (Think Adelaide Cabaret) 2. Velvet tops—Easy to rock and adapt to most styles, they are the perfect answer for casual and even more sophisticated outfits. From T-shirts, to blouses, to jackets, to blazers, the velvet tops and outerwear are a perfect way to spice up an otherwise boring work outfit or going out style. It’s casual with just a bit of something else for fun. 3. Velvet pants—You don’t get more rock’n’roll than this, believe us. From skinnies with high waist to wide legged expensive looking and overly-long styles they are the rock star’s uniform when paired with boots and a plain tee. Perfection. 4. Velvet accessories—The easy way to wear a trend without too many implications, in case you have trend-commitment-issues. A massive velvet trend piece this season is the velvet boots! Then there are the tiny velvet bags and clutches and of course the velvet chokers. Vampire-luxe alert!

Hair Trends What’s Hot
Best Shades for Autumn
Today we’re talking about the hottest hair trends that this Autumn is bringing us when it comes to colour. We’re plucking the latest hair styles and colours straight from the runways and red carpets so that you can all look like stars in the seasons ahead.
Freshly out of hair colour ideas for this season? No problem, we’ll get that inspiration going; whether the look you’re after is an allover dye, subtle highlights or simple ombre. We’ll cover everything, from the glossy chocolate brown Jourdan Dunn is currently flaunting, or the chic honey highlights, property of Alexa Chung.
Warm brown colors—emerged as a pretty potent look this fall. That’s why we’re all witnessing the A-list crowd warming up deep browns and darkening their blonde. Cameron Diaz comes to mind as a perfect illustration. Rich auburn tones—aare a serious envy (anyone thinking of Emma Stone right now?), with many shades from dark and rich to bright and fun there’s a shade to suit most skin tones. Ask your stylist what your best auburn is. If you’re in the mood for a little drama this fall, why not go a complete color change. Reese Witherspoon certainly pulled it off. She went from blonde to dark brown, and I loved it. If you’re going for an instant full look update, new hair hue is simply the perfect way to do it and get away with it. Just be careful and try to complement your eye color and skin tone with your new shade.

Bold colors—have grown in popularity recently. Pioneers of these hair trends are certainly Nicole Richie and Chloe Norgaard. Their ‘dos are ever-changing, and I think they speak for themselves. If you’re not completely sure which color is for you, you can always opt for a dye that’s semi-permanent, or go for an ombre look that’s a bit more subtle. Just print out the hair color of your favorite celebrity and head straight to your hairdresser. Red hair—It’s sought after very highly, especially with Emma Stone being the worldwide favorite girl crush and simply dominating with her luscious auburn locks. As seen on many Hollywood bombshells, red hair carries some serious sex appeal and elegance. Look at Scarlet Johansson and her long layered haircut and tell us we’re wrong. So whether your coppery locks are natural, or you’re considering the “out of the bottle option”, you can look at our stunning celebs for a plethora of ideas. The secret of the red hair’s beauty, putting extraordinary and unusual tones aside, is how much the make-up and complexion affect the overall look. Christina Hendricks will keep her porcelain complexion tan-free and natural, with a slick of red lipstick to make her a wow-worthy sight. Isla Fisher will match her dark red hair with a warmer skin tone for the overall more sunned appearance.

Hair Trends Cont’d Brown hair—It’s a tempting choice to embrace the dark side seeing Emma Watson, Alexa Chung and Mila Kunis with their dark brown shades that are more than lust-worthy. Inspiration is abundant. You can go for the deepest ebony or the warmest mocha, au naturel or dip dye, the most stunning dark brown shades are yours to explore. Emma Watson carries long, glossy locks in very chic updos for her red carpet events. Alexa Chung still rules when it come to brunette beadhead, and straight and shiny goes well with Mila Kunis. Short crops, glamorous undo or be achy waves are the styles to go for, depending on the occasion. Blonde hair—Well, blonde hair is a hair trends favourite (who would’ve guessed, right?). There’s a bunch of ideas among our celebrities and models to go around. Light or dark blonde, all-out platinum; you name it. Ombre uplights are a strong trend we think is here to stay, especially with Nicole Richie and Jessica Alba modeling some warmer, honey blonde shades. Ombre lights are excellent for darker shades; they add texture and depth, simultaneously resulting in dark caramel shades, only without the issues with re-growth of the dark root. Natural blondes might want to take cues from models such as Jessica Hart or May Jagger. They should opt for a dirty blonde appearance with a bed head look to it. You’ll achieve this by weaving the softer highlights among the darker tones that look more natural. You should wear these long, loose and with a lot of treatment that will ensure the required freshness and glossiness of your blond hair. Platinum blonde is a “notice me” color as always. You could go for champagne-hued tresses like Carey Mulligan or with a textured blonde crop like Jenifer Lawrence. Caramel blonde or ultra ash, I’m sure you’ll manage to find something among all those models and celebrities.
Au t umn - 2 017
Short hairstyles—They’re certainly having their moment this fall. We’re talking chic bobs, cool crops, the bold quiff and of course the mid-length. Bob hairstyles—They are a big look for this season! Casual benefits and lowmaintenance styles are taking place of sweptover curls and long bed heads. This is tricky style so be careful with this one if you are trying to get there on your own. Make sure that you don’t make a mess of your hair; choose the good stuff, pay close attention and choose the best hair straightener: We recommend Evy Professional one glide to keep your hair hydrated and smoother for longer. Plaits—they are a favourite on the red carpet right now. Whatever your face shape or preferred style is, you’ll find this look more than appealing. Medium-length—these hairstyles are definitely the cut of this season. They’re taking over the longer, glamorous styles due to their low-maintenance and practicality. Fringes—an easy, yet modern, way out of your everyday style. You don’t feel like full-on chop and you still want a change, this is your golden ticket. Plus, it works well with all hair lengths.

Blo—range Hair Trends Cont’d
New Hot Hair Colour Trend for 2017 It didn’t take 2017 much time to invent the latest hair color trend. Meet “blorange:” She’s got the best traits from both her parents (yep, blonde and orange) and she looks good on just about everyone. Well, get ready to go bright on the hair horizon, since this new trend is all about brighter shades. Last year we managed to see lots of dusty and coppery red hues, but 2017 is bringing us a more whimsical version of these trends. It’s a mix of blonde and orange that creates a juicy gradient look. Blorange is the natural extension to last years rose trend. This new variation is particularly good for fair and golden skin tones. Have a look to find some amazing blorange hair color inspo for 2017.

Team Profile Torie Kozubaj Why did you choose hairdressing ? The love I have for making people look and feel great; it was hard not to choose hairdressing! What’s your specialty ? I love any type of precision cutting, i also love being creative in colour work and i do enjoy a good men’s taper. What’s your goals for 2017? Always keeping the year interesting i’ll be attending a lot of courses to make sure my clients are always up to date with the latest trends, i’m entering comps and 2017 is for making sure i’m going beyond my boundaries and learning heaps of new things.
“The love i have for making people look and feel great, it’s hard not to choose hairdressing.” If you could style anyone who would it be ? Lauren Conrad (The Hills). I have always been obsessed with Lauren; she’s so unique and I think she would have great hair to style. She would be a lot of fun and let me do awesome things. What’s your favourite hair colour ? I love all colours! But i do favour deep cool browns, deep blues, blacks and i do also love a good cool blonde. What’s your prediction for colour next season autumn/winter ? Warmer browns, softer highlights, more balayage, it definitely isn’t going out of season anytime soon. However I have been creative with how far i’m starting lightness, not being scared of getting closer to the roots.
What’s your favourite shampoo conditioner and treatment combo? I love KMS Colour Vitality Shampoo to protect colour and KMS Moist Repair Conditioner to keep hair hydrated. Using the Kerasilk reconstruct mask to put life back into damaged hair and adding extreme shine. Who is your style icon and why ? My style icon is Rihanna. I just love how dark, rich and shiny her colour is, how she is open and different with her styling and always matches her hair with what she is wearing, making it a statement.

Makeup By Mel Mel Norris Mel has been in the beauty industry for over five years specialising in eyelash extensions and makeup. Since joining our team in September, Mel has worked on photo shoots for SA Style Magazine, worked on models for Goldwell Colour Zoom and makeup for the newspaper. Our resident makeup artist Mel shares some of her tips and tricks to making yourself looking and feel great: “Great makeup always starts with a great base, so making sure your skin is freshly cleansed and moisturised. If you have a dryer skin type then a quick exfoliation is recommended. This means that your skin is looking and feeling great so your foundation will sit and last nicely on the skin.
“Great makeup always starts with a great base, so making sure your skin is freshly cleansed and moisturised. “ “Start your makeup with the eyes first. I know that it seems strange but all the great makeup artists start that way! It just means that if you are doing a particularly heavy eye and you get some fallout from the eye shadow then you can easily clean it up without ruining the rest of your makeup. Also, in case you’re trying out a new look or have made a mistake, it can be easily changed.
“There are lots of options for eyebrow products but find one that is easy to apply and a good colour to suit your tone. If you’re finding that hard then have an eyebrow tint to give you some more definition. Don’t forget to also have them shaped. Eyebrows frame not only your eyes but your whole face so make sure you show them some love. “Lip crayons are not only a colour but are a lip liner and treatment all in one, so use a longlasting variety. They are easy to apply and are keeping your lips soft and moisturised. I am loving Issada’s lip crayon called Smooch.” So whatever your next occasion is make some time to come in and see Mel for all your make up needs! We also offer makeup lessons for anyone who feels like they need some help, or a change in the way that you are applying makeup, All our in-salon makeup treatments are redeemable on products. Purchase 3 or more products whilst in salon having your makeup applied then your application will be complimentary!

Men’s Trends Autumn 2017 70s Shag—this trend has been roaring back for the last year. It’s very game of thrones inspired, particularly Kit Harington sporting his texture curls and waves. It’s a revamped style from the 70’s and 80’s. The beauty of this style is that it’s not exclusive to the young college student or the older muso. This haircut can be worn professionally and worn well. By being super versatile, this style can be wavy, curly or straight, depending on products used of course. We recommend using KMS Wave Foam that can be diffused for a more fuller look, or left to dry naturally for a tighter curl. Kevin Murphy Killer Curls can be substituted for this also. If you’re after a smoother, refined style, use Evo Easy Tiger, blow-dry this in to really smooth and create a more professional and cool style. Blunt Fringe—this style has made the full transition from runway model hair to the streets this season. Can be worn very textured, almost pieced out, to a smooth high school/ college prep look. Do avoid if you have a fuller and/or round shape face, this look will suit lean angular faces more and pronounce those features well. Products to try are KMS Moulding Paste blow-dried in and Evo Construction Cream when dry to piece out parts of the hair and create texture.
Au t umn - 2 017
The Throwback Cut—1990’s boy bands are back with this hair style. A full on revival was seen on the runway last year and is definitely on the cards for men this Autumn. What’s unique about this style is that it predominantly uses the middle part, almost flops from side to side. This style needs little effort to make look good. Would be a good place to start for older men not wanting to go too short and keep some length. KMS Gel Wax would be a great choice for this style, dry or wet apply from roots to ends. Short Spiky Pompadour—A timeless hairstyle really does belong on this list, especially when it has slight change from the classic. The point of difference this season though is that this cut is becoming shorter and edgy as opposed to longer and medium styles. A Very low maintenance cut when properly looked after, regular trims of 6 weeks would keep this style in top shape. Style doesn’t need to change between day/night as it is professional and cool at the same time. Products to use on this hair would be KMS Gel Wax applied on dried or towel dried hair.
Long on top with Surgical Line— Slits are making a comeback and they aren’t just reserved for the youth either, from making an artificial part to adding some artwork on the side/rear of the head, to a focal point to make your style stand out. This haircut can definitely add some edge and angular benefits to your face shape as well. What is also great with surgical lines, you can implement them small or large, wide or thin. We recommend to limit it to 2 lines as it keeps it clean and not too busy. Products to use would be Evo Box O’ Bollox and Kevin Murphy Night Rider.
