FASHION MEETS ART RUNWAY SHOW Produced by Sam James-Cockayne In late September, Adelaide hosted it’s first ‘Adelaide Hair and Make up Trade Show’ at the Adelaide Convention Centre which was a huge success and was very well received by both industry and public. The weekend was jam packed with Australian YouTube make-up sensations holding demonstrations and Master hairstylists from right here in Adelaide and around Australia educating on all the latest trends. To close the weekend, Adelaide’s award winning Sam James-Cockayne produced the incredible ‘Fashion Meets Art Runway’ show. A truly inspirational collaboration with some of SA’s elite talent within the industry hand picked by Sam to bring these two worlds of Fashion and Art together.

09

With a huge team of over 200 creatives involved, Sam spent the previous few months putting this together with the creative mind behind ‘Adelaide Hair And Make-up Trade Show’ and Kohl and Capri Director, Sam Gehlken. Major sponsors included Orbe, Modelling agency Pride Models and leading hair company KMS California. The opening featured the extraordinary Emma Hack sharing some of her thoughts and images from over the many years of her involvement within these industries, whilst local make-up artist Mandy Nash and her team showcased 6 body painted models inspired by expressionism art. Our creative teams created graffiti magic on stage with their intense colours, avant-garde geometric hair pieces and very cool one-off plastic pieces by local designer Greta-Kate. The event featured live graffiti artist Joel Rifsy finishing a piece standing more than 3 metres tall throughout the runway -- being dramatically exposed for the ending of the show. With such a successful debut we can’t wait to see this event grow and start planning for the next one!

ST. TROPEZ

Achieve a sun-kissed, natural looking tan, without ever being in the sun’s harmful rays! St Tropez uses an all natural tanning agent in all of its self-tan, spray-tan and gradual tanning products. It is green based in colour which means you will never have a nasty orange glow! There are a few different options, not only for our in salon spray tan but also for you to use at home. It features an 8hour developing time, which means it’s perfect if you want to tan at night, sleep in it and then wash it off in the morning. And for all you last minute tanners there is an express version with the same fabulous St Tropez colour that just can be washed off a bit sooner: wash off after 1 hour for a light tan, 2 hours for a medium tan, 3 hours for a dark tan. Gradual tanning products are a must-have this year, especially with St Tropez launching the revolutionary ‘in shower gradual tan.’ This product will not only change the way you tan but change the way you think about tanning. No mess, no fuss and no smell! To begin, shower with shower gel or body wash and rinse off, then turn the shower off. Generously apply in shower gradual tan in circular motions, letting it lather up a little, wash palms of hands and wait 3 minutes, rinse off and towel dry as normal. The colour will start to develop over the next couple of hours. Remember this is only a gradual tan and will need to build up over a couple of days to get a deeper colour. This product is also great for keeping the life of your in-salon or at-home self-tan; use it a few days afterwards to keep your tan looking fresh.

11 Steph’s Tips & Tricks for Tanning • Always exfoliate at least 24 hours beforehand, paying particular attention to dry areas such as hands, elbows, knees and feet • Wax or shave at least 24 hours before tanning • Make sure that skin is free from products such as deodorant, moisturiser or make up • Apply a thin layer of moisturiser to dry areas, hands, elbows, knees and feet • Apply tan according to guide colour, so you can see where you’re putting it. A foam mitt is preferable, but if you are using your hand make sure you wash them thoroughly afterwards • In order to do your back, if tanning on your own, put the foam mitt on to a coat hanger and stand with your back to the mirror, gently glide from side to side to cover any missed areas • Make sure you have loose dark clothing to put on while your tan marinates. We also would recommend not wearing a bra • Check timing instructions with your therapist or on your product to see developing time and leave on for an appropriate amount of time • When you are developed please remember you will look darker, so don’t panic! Your tan has just processed underneath the guide colour • Have a shower to wash off guide colour, stand under the water until it runs clear and don’t use too much shower gel • Pat dry with a towel instead of rubbing, continue to do this for the life of your tan - this will help to prolong the results • Use gradual tanning products to keep your tan looking lush

RUNWAY M Y WAY This year at the ‘Adelaide Hair And Make-up Trade Show’, our very own Sam was asked to host a workshop during the weekend. She did what she does best styling up a storm, with her show ‘Runway My Way’. Over the 2 hours she showcased 3 models with step-by-step looks -- taking her inspiration from recent trends seen at New York Fashion Week and putting her twist on them. The looks included wet vs dry, beautiful unstructured curls and ponytails featuring backwards braids. Our very talented Renee was on the make up tools creating 3 different stunning looks also inspired by current make-up trends, her hot tip being “keep that skin dewy and fresh!” A big thanks to our very supportive agency Pride Models who provided us with the three gorgeous girls for the morning. All models were dressed by the talented Jaimie Sortino and his new collection Woodland Lights. Makeup - Renee Models - Pride Models Stylist - Jaimie Sortino

FASHION FESTIVAL In it’s fourth year and part of the official ‘Adelaide Fashion Festival’ schedule for the first time, Honda presented ‘A Night of Fashion at the Art Gallery’, held through all four galleries in the Elder Wing. A spectacular venue is an understatement and some of our team were lucky enough to be involved! Sam, Paige and Mel were on the tools for Cloud 9 creating modern glam hair with deep side parts and brushed out waves secured at the neck with black bobby pins... YES YOU HEARD RIGHT! Leaving your pins in when placed right is a hot trend on the runway this season! A prelude to the event was held on North Terrace with Finesse Models and Pride Models parading out the front of the Art Gallery as guests entered. Ahead of the runway show, guests gathered in the Art Gallery courtyard to enjoy cocktails from The Collins Bar, fine local wines by Fox Creek served alongside the green wall by Atmosphere Events. A must go-to event for all you fashionistas!

“It’s an incredible feeling to have spent a decade with Ida & Joe under the Orbe banner. To then be given this opportunity to be a part of their brand by opening the new salon and running it in North Adelaide was amazing”, Sam James-Cockayne, Salon Director Orbe North Adelaide THE NEW SALON After a stellar 21 years with the sole salon in Norwood, Owners Ida and Jo wanted to expand their thriving brand to include Sam, a much loved team member of 10 years. As Sam explains “I have been given the wonderful opportunity to take the next step in my career and run my own Orbe team in North Adelaide. With all the new developments down this side of town like, The Adelaide Oval rebuild, new eateries popping up and local community events, the street and area is buzzing. It has become a new fashion and culture hub and I’m glad we opened the salon here, it was just the right time.” RUNWAY GLAM @ MERCEDES BENZ FASHION WEEK AUSTRALIA The Orbe Hair team have been known to contribute their hair styling expertise to prominent fashion shows and TV series. Most recently they were a part of a select few salons around the nation to be invited to style hair at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia. As well as assisting with hair in major runway shows like Ixiah, Jennifer Kate, Lee Matthews and Bondi (representing Evo & Cloud 9) where the team collaborated with other salons, they also had the chance to conceptualise the vision and create the runway hair styles for the luxe evening wear designer Galanni. WHAT WAS YOUR vISION FOR THE GALANNI SHOW? Ida: When I was asked to be the Creative Director (Hair) for the Galanni show the overall goal was

beautiful hair for the gorgeous gowns. Using Goldwell products we wanted to create a simple yet glamorous look that accentuated the luxe high-end aesthetic of the brand, and I believe we achieved that. It was great working with a cool team, everything flowed really well, we achieved the vision and the whole show was beautiful.” RUNWAY REPORT // MOvEMENT ALERT Hot off the runway, the Orbe team have helped create the leading looks that are set to make a debut at your next function or night on the town. The key word to remember this season is MOVEMENT, how extravagant you choose to go comes down to personal taste and the look your trying to achieve. Whether you’re going for a relaxed bed-head vibe, textured waves or glamour curls incorporate elements of texture and movement in your hairstyle to be on the forefront of this seasons style. “Think of the sexy Lara Bingle look, it’s all about the movement and moving away from a flat overly structured style.”- Sam AWARD WINNING TEAM Continually on the forefront of the hottest hair trends and techniques and working hard at perfecting their craft it’s no wonder that the team at Orbe Hair North Adelaide have continued in the same path as the Norwood salon and have been nominated as finalists in national industry competitions. * Top 6 in Australia for Best New Salon Design. * Sam James-Cockayne Top 4 finalist in Australia for EVY Professional Visionary and Rising Star awards.

MUST HAvE TOOL THE ALL-ROUNDER CLOUD 9 Conical Wand (Available for purchase in salon) Gone are the days where you needed multiple curlers on standby, depending on the style you’re going for, from tight curls to soft waves, this wand is all you’ll need.

WHAT MAKES IT SO GOOD? Ida: The Cloud 9 Conical Wand is constructed using superior materials so it actually smooths and puts shine back into the hair. Sam: And you can’t beat the versatility of the tool. We used it in fashion week to create everything from a glamorous look to a natural undone style. The look was more about adding texture and accentuating the natural flow. It also gets a lot of use in the salon and our clients love it, you can create so many looks with just the one tool and it’s not just for the experts, anyone can use it.”

A GIRL’S BEST FRIEND Once we find a hair stylist we know and trust, we tend to stick by them. I mean why change, right? After all, we’re putting our complete trust in them to look after our locks. And for a woman – back us up here, ladies – that’s pretty important. One of Orbe’s longest serving client, Carole Stewart, knows what we’re talking about. She’s been coming to the salon since they opened their doors along The Parade 21 years ago. “I started seeing Ida when she was just 18 and working as an apprentice at Peter and Robert along The Parade,” Carole says. Carole was living in Broadview at the time with her three young children while building a home in Stonyfell. Carole thought it best to find a hairdresser in the area. “I rang the salon and said I need to see someone today. They replied, ‘We’re terribly sorry, but we’re booked out.’” Carole’s response was testament to a woman in dire need of some grooming.

17 “Well, I just want you to know that when I hang up this phone I’m going to shave my head.” The receptionist was quick to respond: “Just a moment, please.” A couple of minutes passed before someone at the other end picked up the phone. “If you come in, Ida can do it for you.” Carole’s first impressions upon seeing Orbe’s flamboyant salon director, Ida Tirimacco, will make you laugh. “I thought she was a gypsy or something because of the way she dressed – those flowing dresses,” she says. Carole has been visiting Ida and watching as the dynamic partnership with Joe Cimmino took Orbe from humble beginnings in 1994 to one of Adelaide’s leading salons. At the time, they shared their current space with the local fish and chip shop. It was half the size. Today, Orbe offers clients the whole box and dice, from manicures to pedicures, massage and spray tans. But Carole likes to keep it simple on her routine six-weekly visit. “My colour is kept pretty natural and I have an easy-to-maintain haircut these days.” For those wondering what Carole had done at that very first appointment 21 years ago, she didn’t go quite as drastic as the complete shave. “I would have definitely had it cut, coloured and I probably even had a perm from time to time.” Congratulations to Orbe, which celebrates 21 years of As seen in Parade Magazine

service along The Parade.

We saw the naturally textured wavy hair take its stand on the spring/summer runway shows, appearing all over the place. We knew that as a 1970s staple, these locks would be back in style, considering the fact that 2015 seems to be all about celebrating that suede filled floral printed bohemian inspired era.

COLOURS The most asked for colour this season is without a doubt

much creativity!

Sunkissed mahogany is another popular choice with more lighter variation being naturally placed through those darker shades. Bronze metal is a term we’re loving! A strong warmth being seen amongst our light brown, dark blondes to replicate those true natural bronze tone. For our lighter icy winter, blondes were seeing a shift back to the surfer blonde being less done and more lived in or more specifically beach lived in. Don’t fear there’s still a place for the platinum gradient lovers but with less of a silver tone and more of a pastel colour overtone. For those a little more courageous the colour to be is purple! Dark to light ombre, variations of 3-5 shades or over toned lilac; they’re all key colour trends for the hotter months.

MEN’S HOT HAIR The short sharp fades are still going strong but with less obvious length ontop. By Removing some of that length on top but keeping it slightly undone it gives a strong look that can be more versatile than the man bun. More matte textured products are the winner this season keeping in line with that more unfinished look. Beards are still very much trending but glad to see more of you know what you’re doing to keep it in shape. It’s long but not overgrown and most importantly your number one accessory.

WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN THE BRAID BUNCH This summer’s hottest hairstyle comes fresh from the festival scene; braids that can be accessorised with colour, feathers, beads or even jewellery. From fancy fishtails to a messy tied up knotted braid, these days braids are anything but boring. Have some fun and add a bit of interest to your summer hair. You can also add some KEVIN MURPHY coloured chalk, perfect for those who aren’t quite ready for a permanent colour -- calling all you creative teens. Speak to your hairstylist today.

GLITZ & GLAMOUR Dolce and Gabbana showcased some stunning over-thetop ornate tiara style headpieces on the runway. Unstructured hair and slightly tousled look, since forever we have been talking about making buns on our heads. It used to be the buns at the nape of the neck, but now it appears that we should replace the word bun with knot instead as we will not be labouring over the way we do our hair but simply “throwing it up. They may not always look perfect, but if we put in a bit of effort, we should be able to create something that looks just as awesome as that Dolce & Gabbana design with the golden hair accessories. Dolce & Gabbana also had some stunning chignons that had an undone quality to them -- almost as if they were done by amateur hands. For knotted buns with texture add some brooches to help add that little bit of glamour! Whether your hair is up or down, this is a trend all of its own. To play with the style and add a hint of fun, hair ornamentations like clips, pins or bands can do just that! Match or clash your colours and themes by adding accessories like these.
