« D’une pierre, deux coups… » Vous avez salué avec enthousiasme la sortie de notre numéro 1 le mois dernier et nous vous remercions toutes et tous de la chaleur de cet accueil et de vos nombreux témoignages de satisfaction et d’encouragement. Vous retrouverez Eurometropolitan Strasbourg lors de chaque session européenne. Directement remis au Parlement européen à 3500 personnes, venues de toute l’Europe, il est également disponible dans près de 200 points de dépôt (restaurants, hôtels, boutiques, salles de spectacle etc…) de l’agglomération strasbourgeoise. Conséquence inattendue de la parution du n°1 : de nombreux strasbourgeois nous ont également confié qu’ils y ont puisé des informations inédites sur tout ce qu’offre notre ville en matière de sorties et loisirs. Tant mieux ! En faisant ainsi « d’une pierre deux coups », notre motivation s’en trouve renforcée… Bonne lecture !

You will find Eurometropolitan Strasbourg on each European session. It is directly delivered to the European parliament, aimed at over 3500 people, coming from all over Europe, it is also available in 200 different places (restaurants, hotels, shops, venues) within Strasbourg. An unexpected surprise regarding the release of the first issue: many Strasbourg people also told us they found out unreleased information about what Strasbourg has to offer in term of going out and leisure. By doing the “two bird, one stone” thing, we are even more motivated than ever! Have a good read !

Wir danken Ihnen für den herzlichen Empfang und die zahlreichen positiven und ermutigenden Reaktionen. Eurometropolitan Strasbourg erwartet Sie künftig zu jeder Sitzungswoche des Europäischen Parlaments in Straßburg. Das Magazin wird direkt im Parlamentsgebäude an 3500 Leser verteilt, ist aber auch an nahezu 200 verschiedenen Orten in der Stadt, in Restaurants, Hotels, Boutiquen und Theatern verfügbar. Unerwartet für uns kamen die Reaktionen von Straßburger Bürgern. Auch sie hätten von den zahlreichen Hinweisen und Informationen zu Veranstaltungen profitiert. Umso besser ! From rock to Baroque music, as well as rap and barrel organ, Enzo Melozzi’s music creates a playful puzzle, finely adjusted to the Pinocchio novel, the puppet imagined by the Tuscan writer Carlo Colledi on the XIX century. We all know the story of the poor carpenter, Gepetto, who created this animated puppet and decided to make him the son he never had. But that offspring liked nothing more than doing as he pleased. Even if, every time he lied, his nose extended. Pinocchio, whose antics will drive him straight down inside a marine monster’s stomach, in spite of the warnings given by Jimini, the cricket who wants to help him grow up. Also a sly cat, a smart fox, Stromboli the puppeteer, the friend Lucignolo and Blue Fairy. All those characters in this initiatory novel. The choregrapher, Ivan Cavallari retained all the episodes that stroke him most

Du rock au baroque en passant par le rap et l'orgue de barbarie, la musique d'Enzo Melozzi crée un puzzle ludique finement ajusté autour du conte de Pinocchio, le pantin imaginé par l'écrivain toscan Carlo Collodi au XIXe siècle. On connaît l'histoire du pauvre menuisier Gepetto qui façonna cette marionnette animée dont il décida de faire le petit garçon qu'il n'avait jamais eu. Mais le rejeton n'aimait rien tant qu'en faire à sa tête (de bois !), même si à chacun de ses mensonges son nez s'allongeait... Insupportable Pinocchio que ses frasques conduiront dans le ventre d'un monstre marin malgré les avertissements de Jemini, le criquet bien décidé à l'aider à grandir. Chat sournois, Renard rusé, montreur de marionnettes à l'inquiétant nom de Mangefeu, ami Lumignon et Fée turquoise... tout un petit monde tisse la trame de ce conte initiatique dont le chorégraphe Ivan Cavallari a retenu les épisodes qui avaient le plus marqué son esprit lorsqu'il était enfant en Italie. C'est « un espace magique, vide et sombre, délimité par un rideau de perles brillantes d'où apparaissent comme par enchantement ces personnages oniriques avant d'y disparaître » que le scénographe Edoardo Sanchi a imaginé pour décor de ce spectacle proposé par le Ballet de l'Opéra national du Rhin. Du dénouement imaginé par Ivan Cavallari, directeur artistique de la compagnie, nous ne dirons rien. À vous de vous laisser porter par les frasques de cet improbable personnage auquel l'écrivain Italo Calvino conférait l'intemporalité. Son histoire est ici racontée non pas avec des phrases mais dans la permanente tension des mouvements. Pinocchio était du bois dont on fait la vie, Ivan Cavallari a donné corps aux mots. as a child in Italy. ”It is a magic space delimited by a sparkling pearl curtain where dream-like characters appear before disappearing again”, a decor imagined by the scenographer Edoardo Sanchi for this show, presented by the Opera du Rhin. An outcome imaged by Ivan Cavallari, the company’s artistic director, we will say no more. Lose yourselves in the antics of this improbable character, who the writer Italo Calvino conferred timelessness. His story is being told here, not with sentences but with a permanent tension in the movements. Pinocchio was wood that came alive, Cavallari gave life to words.

Ausflüchten dieser reizenden und ungezogenen Figur davontragen, die Italiens Schriftsteller Italo Calvino einmal als absolut zeitlos bezeichnet hat. Auf der Bühne der Straßburger Oper wird sie nicht mit Worten sondern mit den Mitteln des Tanzes erzählt, Pinocchio war aus dem Holz geschnitzt, das unser Leben ausmacht. Ivan Cavallari hat den Worten seines Schöpfers Gestalt verliehen.

PINOCCHIO – STUR WIE EIN HOLZKOPF Aus Rock und Barock, Rap und Drehorgelklängen setzt der Komponist Enzo Melozzi rund um die Figur Pinocchio ein amüsantes musikalisches Puzzle zusammen. Die Geschichte, wie sie im 19. Jahrhundert der toskanische Schriftsteller Carlo Collodi aufgeschrieben hat, kennt man. Wie der arme Schreiner Gepetto sich eine Holzpuppe drechselt, sie zum Leben erweckt wird und Pinocchio in die Rolle des Sohnes schlüpft, den er alte Mann niemals gehabt hat. Doch nichts macht der Sprößling lieber, als seinen Holzkopf durchzusetzen. Und mit jeder Lüge wird seine Nase länger… Unerträglicher Pinocchio, den seine Eskapaden direkt in den Bauch eines Wals führen, trotz der Warnungen der sprechenden Grille, die entschlossen ist, der törichten Holzpuppe dabei zu helfen, erwachsen zu werden. Die Handlung dieser Geschichte versammelt eine heimtückische Katze, einen gewitzten Fuchs, einen Marionettenspieler und eine Fee mit dunkelblauen Haaren. Der Choreograph Ivan Cavallari hat sich jene Episoden herausgepickt, die ihn als Kind in Italien am meisten beeindruckt hatten. Bühnenbildner Edoardo Sanchi hat für das Ballett der Rheinoper dazu einen dunklen und zugleich magischen Raum geschaffen. Ein Vorhang aus funkelnden Perlen begrenzt ihn, aus dem wie von Zauberhand Traumfiguren auftauchen und wieder verschwinden. Wir verschweigen an dieser Stelle, wie Ivan Cavallari, der künstlerische Leiter der Kompanie, die Handlung aufgelöst hat. Lassen Sie sich von den törichten

Et elle ajoute, à l’intention des jeunes artistes alsaciens : « Ce lieu est à vous. Venez y exposer ! Contacteznous… ». Du goût, du talent, de l’audace à revendre. La PopArtiserie veut surprendre et bousculer Strasbourg. C’est très bien parti…

Comment innover à Strasbourg, une des villes françaises les plus dotées en matière de galerie d’art ? Facile : il suffit de suivre son instinct et d’être soi-même. Solveen Dromson et Erwann Brilland le prouvent en plein cœur de la Petite France… Au royaume des colombages qui parsèment le quartier emblématique de La Petite France, un drôle de couple vient ajouter les couleurs criardes de l’art contemporain. Elle : 38 ans, issue d’une vieille famille strasbourgeoise qui œuvre depuis toujours dans l’immobilier. « Je m’apprête d’ailleurs à prendre la suite de mon grand-père, le fondateur, et de mon père. C’est totalement logique… » confie Solveen Dromson. « Sauf qu’entre-temps, j’ai travaillé chez Emmaüs durant sept ans. Je continuais à peindre lors de mes moments libres. Mais il fallait que je fasse quelque chose pour faire vivre notre rêve… ». Ce « notre » concerne aussi son compagnon, Erwann Brilland, 42 ans. Ce réalisateur de documentaires qui avait fait sa place au soleil ne pouvait plus accepter « certains compromis » comme il dit aujourd’hui pudiquement…Passé lui aussi par Emmaüs où il a dirigé la communauté « historique » de NeuillyPlaisance (celle créée à l’origine par l’Abbé Pierre), il avoue avoir « travaillé pendant deux ans sur le projet de la PopArtiserie » : « L’Abbé était aussi un peintre, on le sait peu » sourit-il. « La PopArtiserie veut promouvoir l’art de la rue. Redonner de la vie, de la couleur. La beauté est partout, le partage aussi. Solveen et moi, on avait besoin de continuer notre chemin dans ce sens… » Le résultat de cette démarche est plutôt somptueux. Une salle expo en façade rue de l’Ail, une cour intérieure déjà aménagée pour accueillir des évènements et une grande galerie en fond de cour où flashent les œuvres des premiers artistes exposés. Une vraie maîtrise dans l’art de l’accrochage. Aux murs, du talent et encore du talent. Un espace surprenant, bousculant et… un bar qui trône au

How to innovate in Strasbourg, one of the best cities for art galleries? It’s easy: follow your instinct and be yourself. Solveen Dromson and Erwann Brilland prove it in the very heart of Petite France… Among the typical half-timbered houses in the emblematic Petite France, an odd couple just added the bright colours of contemporary art. Her: She is 38, from an old Strasbourg family which has always been into real estate. “I am actually ready to take the business over from my grandfather, the founder, and from my father, it’s very logical…” says Solveen Dromson “Apart from the fact that I worked at Emmaus for 7 years. In the meantime, I carried on painting in my spare time. But I had to do something to keep our dream alive…” “Our” is about her partner, Erwann Brilland, 42. This documentary-maker who made his place in the sun couldn’t accept “certain commitments,” as he now humbly says. He also used to work for Emmaus where he managed the “historical” community in Neuilly-Plaisance (the one originally created by l’abbé Pierre). He admits he has been working for two years on the PopArtiserie project: “L’abbé Pierre was also a painter, hardly anyone knows about that,” he smiles. La PopArtisanerie wants to promote street art, give some life and colour back. Beauty is everywhere, sharing too. Solveen and me needed to continue along that path ” The result of this project is rather sumptuous. An exhibition room on rue de l’Ail, an already furnished interior courtyard to hold events, and a large gallery in the back where the first artists’ artworks are exposed. There’s a real mastery in the art of catching the eye. On the walls, there is talent and more talent. A surprising, astonishing space and…a bar at the centre. “We want people to come in and discover us, even just for a coffee,” says Solveen. “No more shyness, open the door, this gallery will welcome you in warmly,” she adds. And she adds, addressing young Alsatian artists, “This place is yours, come and exhibit your work, contact us…”. They have taste, talent, and a lot of audacity. La PopArtiserie wants to surprise and shake Strasbourg. It is a good start. Coming up this February: Pierre Terrasson’s eventexhibition. The photographer for the artistic scene in the 70’s and 80’s. Backstage pictures of Mick Jagger, Joe Cocker, Tina Turner, Alain Bashung, Serge Gainsbourg and a lot more. More to come in the next issue of Eurometropolitan Strasbourg, out on February 24th.

Wie nur kann man in Straßburg noch etwas Neues schaffen, in einer der Städte Frankreichs mit der größten Galeriendichte? Ganz einfach : Es genügt seinem Instinkt zu folgen. Solveen Dromson und Erwann Brilland beweisen es mitten im Petite France… Im Königreich des Fachwerks, einem der bekanntesten Straßburger Viertel, hat ein ungewöhnliches Paar die schrillen Farben der zeitgenössischen Kunst hinzugefügt. Sie ist 38 Jahre alt, stammt aus einer alteingesessenen Straßburger Familie, die seit jeher im Immobiliengeschäft tätig war. «Ich bereite mich im Übrigen darauf vor, die Nachfolge meines Großvaters, des Unternehmensgründers, und meines Vaters anzutreten. Das war für mich schon immer klar», sagt Solveen Dromson. « Nur, dass ich in der Zwischenzeit sieben Jahre bei Emmaüs gearbeitet habe. In meiner Freizeit habe ich gemalt. Aber ich musste etwas tun, um unseren Traum leben zu können. »

«Unseren Traum », damit spielt sie auf sich und ihren Partner an, Erwann Brilland, 42. Brilland ist Regisseur und Dokumentarfilmer. Seinen Platz an der Sonne hatte er sicher. « Bestimmte Kompromisse », wie er sagt, lehnte er ab. Auch er hatte den Weg der Hilfsorganisation Emmaüs gekreuzt, wo er die von Abbé Pierre gegründete Ursprungsgemeinschaft Neuilly-Plaisance leitete. Dort dachte er zwei Jahre lang über das Projekt zur PopArtiserie nach. « Abbé Pierre war auch Maler, das wissen die wenigsten », sagt er lächelnd. « Die PopArtisanerie will die Straßenkunst fördern. Sie will Leben und Farben zurückbringen. Die Schönheit ist überall, die Teilhabe auch. Solveen und ich mussten unseren Weg in diese Richtung weitergehen. » Das Ergebnis ist mehr als gelungen. Ein Ausstellungsraum an der Rue de l’Ail und ein Innenhof, der für besondere Veranstaltungen

gedacht ist, und eine große Galerie im Hof, wo die ersten Werke die Blicke auf sich ziehen. Sie verstehen sich darauf, Bilder zu präsentieren. Was dort hängt, zeugt wieder und wieder von Talent. Der Raum ist überraschend und umwerfend, mit einer Bar im Zentrum. « Wir wollen, dass die Leute die Tür aufstoßen und uns hier entdecken und sei es nur für einen Kaffee », kündigt Solveen an. «Keine Schüchternheit, kommen Sie rein, diese Galerie nimmt sie herzlich auf. » An junge elsässische Künstler richtet sie die Aufforderung: «Dieser Ort gehört euch. Kommt und stellt bei uns aus. Ruft uns an ! » Mit Geschmack, Talent und Wagemut will die PopArtiserie Straßburg überraschen und aus dem Konzept bringen. Ein Anfang ist gemacht… Im Februar : Pierre Terrasson, der Fotograf der Künstlerszene der 1970er und 80er Jahre. Mick Jagger, Joe Cocker, Tina Turner, Alain Bashung, Serge Gainsbourg und viele andere sind auf seinen Backstage-Fotos zu sehen. Wir kommen in unserer nächsten Ausgabe, die am 24. Le Musée historique de Strasbourg bénéficie désormais de nouvelles salles et présente l’histoire complète de Strasbourg. Des richesses à découvrir… The historical museum of Strasbourg now has new spaces and introduces the complete history of Strasbourg. Many things to discover…. Das Straßburger Musée Historique ist um neue Räume erweitert worden und zeigt nun die Stadtgeschichte bis zur Gründung der europäischen Institutionen. Reichtümer, die es zu entdecken gilt… Logé depuis 1920 dans l’Ancienne Boucherie (1587), le Musée Historique a pour mission d’évoquer l’histoire urbaine de la ville, comme son histoire politique, économique, sociale et culturelle. Ses riches collections égrènent le fil du temps : maquettes, tel le magnifique plan-relief de 1727 qui reproduit la ville et sa campagne au 1/600e, peintures et arts graphiques, armes et uniformes militaires ou objets de la vie quotidienne. Aux côtés de la grande histoire et du souvenir des grands hommes, comme le général Kléber, les témoignages de la vie de simples citoyens (costumes, mobilier, etc.) et les collections archéologiques permettent de retracer des siècles de vie strasbourgeoise. Dans de nouvelles salles d’une superficie de 425 m2, l’histoire de la Ville de Strasbourg de Napoléon à la création des institutions européennes est présentée à travers un parcours à la fois chronologique, thématique et événementiel au gré de sections consacrées à la vie économique, militaire et culturelle. Grâce à la générosité et à la mobilisation de plus de 115 donateurs et d’une vingtaine d’institutions, les collections du Musée Historique ont pu être considérablement enrichies et elles présentent désormais un panorama complet de l’histoire de la Ville de Strasbourg du Moyen

TREASURES OF THE HISTORICAL MUSEUM. Set in the Ancienne Boucherie (1587) since 1920, the historical mission has a mission to recall the city’s urban history, such as its political, economical, social and cultural history. Its rich collections go through times: Models, such as the magnificent 3D map from 1727 that reproduces the city and its surrounding on a 1/600 scale, paintings and graphic arts, weapons and military uniforms, or everyday life items. Next to the big History and the memorable men, such as General Kleber, some testimonies from simple citizens (costumes, furniture etc.) and archaeological collections enable to retrace centuries of life in Strasbourg. In the new 425m2 rooms, the history of Strasbourg from Napoléon to the creation of the European institutions is presented in a chronological way but also thematic and eventful along the sections dedicated to economical, military and cultural life. Thanks to the generosity and the mobilisation of over 115 donors and about 20 institutions, the collection of the museum have been considerably expanded and now present a full panorama of the history of Strasbourg from the Middle Ages to nowadays. DIE REICHTÜMER DES HISTORISCHEN MUSEUMS Seit 1920 befindet sich im historischen, 1587 erbauten Schlachthaus das Musée Historique. Dort zeichnet es die politische, wirtschaftliche, soziale und kulturelle Entwicklung Straßburgs nach. Möglich ist das dank einer reich bestückten Sammlung : Modelle wie den Relief-Plan von 1727, der die Stadt und ihr Umland zur damaligen Zeit im Verhältnis 1:600 abbildet, Gemälde und Stiche, Waffen und Uniformen sowie Gegenstände des täglichen Lebens. Die Ausstellung bildet nicht nur die große Geschichte im Andenken an Kriegshelden wie den Général Kléber ab, sondern stellt mit Kleidung, Mobiliar und anderen Dingen das Leben der einfachen Straßburger Bevölkerung im Laufe der Jahrhunderte dar. Die neuen Räume mit einer zusätzlichen Fläche von 425 m2 sind nun den Epochen ab der Zeit Napoleons bis zur Gründung der europäischen Institutionen gewidmet. Diese Spanne wird chronologisch, thematisch und am Beispiel wichtiger militärischer, kultureller und wirtschaftlicher Ereignisse aufgearbeitet. Mehr als 115 Leihgeber und etwa 20 Institutionen haben dem Historischen Museum neue Objekte überlassen. So ist ein vollständiges Panorama der Stadt vom Mittelalter bis in die Gegenwart entstanden, eine Ausstellung auf 1700 m2 Fläche, die Straßburgs besondere Geschichte in Szene setzt.

a rt • A R T • k u n st Photographe autrichienne et rédactrice en chef du « Streulicht Magazine for Photography and related matters », Amélie Zadeh s'expose à la Galerie Stimultania dans le cadre de l'exposition Around You, Around Me. Diplômée de l’école des Beaux-Arts de Vienne, Zadeh puise pour l'occasion autant dans les figures cinématographiques que dans l'histoire de l'art, détournant, décortiquant, réinterprétant le Patrocle et le Serment des Horaces de David, le Reflet de Narcisse du Caravage, ou un clair-obscur à la Rembrandt. Jouant sur les formes, les regards, les reflets certains ou incertains, son travail révèle des portraits cachés, dévoilés, picturaux « tantôt reflets d’une personnalité, tantôt image d’une identité ». Un travail aux frontières de l'éphémère et de la temporalité « dans lesquelles il devient l’empreinte d’une expression et le reflet d’une absence ». À l'arrivée, l’exposition « présente des visages figés, intenses, frontaux, et quasi tangibles, mais telle l’image atemporelle que nous renvoient les miroirs, ils s’effacent aussitôt pour devenir l’abstraction de visages, de traits et d’expressions ». Entre ouverture sur le monde et voyage intérieur, Around You, Around Me donne à voir un nouveau regard focalisé sur l'art. An Austrian photographer and editor of « Streulicht Magazine for Photography and related matters », Amélie Zadeh is exhibiting at the Stimultania gallery for the exhibition “Around You, Around Me”. Graduated from the Vienna Arts School, Zadeh uses both cinematographic figures as well as history of art, re-interpreting the Patroclus and the Oath of the Horatii by David, the reflect of Narcissus from Le Caravage or a chiaroscuro in a Rembrandt style. Playing on shapes, looks, reflects, her work reveals hidden or undisclosed portraits “sometimes reflecting a personality, sometimes an image or even an identity”. A work on the border of the ephemeral and the temporality “in which it becomes the print of an expression and the reflection of an absence”. At the beginning, the exhibition « Around you, around me »presents stiff, intense and nearly tangible faces, but like the atemporal image we get from a mirror, they suddenly vanish to become the abstraction of faces, features and expressions”. Between openness to the world and inside journey, « Around you, around me » gives a new look to see, focused on art.

Arbeiten der österreichischen Fotografin und Chefredakteurin des « Streulicht Magazine for Photography and related matters », Amelie Zadeh, sind derzeit in der Galerie Stimultania zu sehen. Zadeh hat an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Wien studiert. Für ihre Arbeiten, die jetzt in Straßburg zu sehen sind, hat sie sich gleichermaßen mit Ikonen des Films wie der Kunstgeschichte beschäftigt. Sie interpretiert sie neu, spielt mit Formen und Blicken. Dabei enthüllt sie versteckte Porträts, Bildnisse, die manchmal Spiegel einer Persönlichkeit, dann wieder Abbild einer Identität sind. Zadehs Arbeit spielt sich an der Grenze zwischen Vergänglichkeit und Zeitlosigkeit ab. Ihre Fotokunst wird zum Abdruck eines flüchtigen Ausdrucks. Auf den ersten Blick zeigt die Ausstellung « Around you, around me » versteinerte Gesichter, intensive Konfrontationen. Man meint sie berühren zu können. Aber so wie das Bild, das uns ein Spiegel zurückwirft, verschwinden sie augenblicklich, um zur Abstraktion von Gesichtern, von Gesichtszügen und Ausdrücken zu werden. « Around you, around me » bewegt sich zwischen Öffnung auf die Welt und innerer Reise und gibt uns einen neuen, einen scharfen Blick auf die Kunst frei.

Qu’ils viennent de Lyon, Dakar, Shanghai ou Bucarest, qu’ils soient employés ou ingénieurs, ils ont en commun d’être un grain de sable dans la grande économie mondiale ». Un voyage, un poème narratif sur fond de « course effrénée au profit », de « folle circulation des capitaux se ruant sur la main-d’œuvre la moins payée », de « dérèglement du marché financier multipliant les faillites d'entreprises et accroissant la dette de pays entiers ». Autant de choses que « nous subissons comme de mauvais rêves », relèvent Aurélia Guillet et Jacques Nichet metteurs en

Das Stück der rumänischen Autorin Alexandra Badea ist ein narratives Gedicht, in dem sich der Zuschauer auf eine Reise begibt. Es geht um die hemmungslose Gier nach dem Profit, den wahnwitzigen Kreislauf des Kapitals auf dem Rücken derer, die am wenigsten verdienen, die Deregulierung der Finanzmärkte, die Insolvenzen von Unternehmen beschleunigt und zur Überschuldung ganzer Länder geführt hat. Die Regisseure Aurélia Guillet und Jacques Nichet inszenieren diesen Albtraum und machen die Schauspieler zu den Sprachrohren fragmentierter Sätze angesichts dieser Krise, die in den Köpfen herumspukt und die Körper durchdringt. Badeas Sprache funktioniert mit rhythmischen Variationen und einer weit ausgreifenden Energie, die sich auf Klänge und Musik stützt. Nouveau conte de l'errance intérieure Le moteur de Fatou Ba, auteure de « Ici » : interroger le monde actuel en cherchant des réponses ou des éclairages dans les histoires anciennes qui ont traversé les siècles. Associée pour l'occasion à la metteure en scène Babette Masson, l'auteure strasbourgeoise puise son inspiration dans les ateliers qu’elle conduit en milieu scolaire pour dépeindre l'itinéraire d’hommes et de femmes venus d’ailleurs mais vivant aujourd’hui ici. Des « héros du quotidien » qui bien qu'ayant choisi de s’impliquer dans la vie de la cité n'en sont pas moins en proie aux conflits d'identité, entre terre natale et terre d'accueil, entre errance et résidence. « Ici » writer Fatou Ba is about questioning today’s world by looking for answers or evidence in ancient histories across the centuries. Associated for the occasion with the director Babette Masson, the Strasbourg author gets her inspiration from workshops she runs in schools to portray the itinerary of men and woman from abroad, who live here nowadays. “Everyday heroes” who despite choosing to get involved in the cité’s life still have conflicts of identity, between their native country and where they are now, between wandering and residency. Nach Antworten sucht sie in den alten Geschichten, die Jahrhunderte überdauert haben. Inspiration findet die Straßburger Autorin in den Workshops, die sie in Straßburger Schulen gibt. Sie versucht gemeinsam mit der Regisseurin Babette Masson herauszufinden, welchen Weg Männer und Frauen, die von anderswo nach Straßburg gekommen sind, zurückgelegt haben. Passeports britannique et irlandais, neuf langues à son actif et toujours un voyage en tête, David Mardell, a choisi Strasbourg comme port d'attache. À moins que ce ne soit Strasbourg qui l'ait choisi... C'est en 1954 qu'il a posé ses valises à l'Hôtel du Centre de Colmar. Pas pour y dormir mais pour y travailler et, à l'époque, il n'aurait jamais pensé qu'il deviendrait, quelques années et moult péripéties - plus tard, haut fonctionnaire du Conseil de l'Europe. D'abord prof d'anglais à l'École d'ingénieurs de Strasbourg, ensuite correspondant de Reuters et du Times, David est finalement entrer en 1962 au service presse de la plus ancienne institution paneuropéenne pour y prendre, en 1977, la direction du service de la culture. Un " virage " qui fut une " chance ", dit-il, " j'ai ainsi pu mesurer, durant les années 1990, combien les pays de l'est de l'Europe avaient besoin de soutien à leur vie culturelle dans leur marche vers la démocratie ". Chargé ensuite de l'organisation des grandes expositions organisées par le Conseil de l'Europe, David fut aussi actif au sein même de la ville en participant à la création de la structure d'échanges artistiques européens " Apollonia " et au lancement du festival de littérature " Étonnants voyageurs " qui fait les beaux jours de Saint-Malo depuis 1988. C'est ainsi que tous les ans (avec son épouse, la journaliste européenne Françoise Schöller), il retourne en Bretagne pour mettre son parfait bilinguisme au service de la manifestation. À Strasbourg, ce jardinier dans l'âme cultive son potager et profite des espaces verts " si bien entretenus ". Il apprécie l'offre culturelle " pléthorique " proposée par la ville, la possibilité d'y faire du sport "à tout âge", la place accordée au vélo et se passionne pour la mystique rhénane. " Strasbourg a du coeur, dit-il en citant Emmaüs ou Oxfam, structure dans laquelle il est impliqué. Elle est capable de se mobiliser pour les sans-papiers ou bien encore les journalistes otages ". Ses restaurants favoris : Osaka (50, rue du Jeu-des-enfants), La Cuccina di Mamma mia (17, rue Geiler), Le Liban Nord, (6, place du Marché-aux-vins), le resto du Musée d'Art moderne pour la vue et l'atmosphère. Sans oublier les winstubs. Son café préféré reste Le Brandt dont il attend comme beaucoup la réouverture. L'aquarelliste qu'il est y a fait des dizaines de croquis. Son rendez-vous immanquable : les (formidables) Bibliothèques idéales organisées en septembre par la librairie Kléber et la Ville de Strasbourg, Traduire l'Europe, manifestation portée par chaque année par l'association Capitale européenne des littératures et le festival Musica.

" STRASBOURG HAS A HEART ; IT IS VERY CAPABLE OF MOBILISATION " He has both British and Irish passports, speaks 9 languages and travels frequently, David Mardell chose Strasbourg as a main residency. Or maybe Strasbourg chose him. He arrived in 1954 and put his luggage in the Hotel du Centre in Colmar. Not to sleep, but to work, and at the time, he never thought that a few years later he’d become a senior official at the Council of Europe. He first worked as an English teacher at l’Ecole d’Ingenieurs de Strasbourg, and then as a correspondent for Reuters and Times, David then entered the press service of the oldest pan European institutions to be head of cultural services. “A lucky turn” he says, “I could then figure out, during the 90’s, how the countries in Eastern Europe needed support in their cultural life on their way to democracy”. Then in charge of organising the large exhibitions from the council of Europe, David was as much active within the city by participating to the creation of the European cultural and artistic structure “Apollonia” and to the launch of the festival of literature “Etonnants voyageurs” that has been happening in Saint-Malo since 1988. That is how every year, with his wife, the European journalist Françoise Schöller, he goes back to Brittany to give a hand thanks to his perfect bilinguism. In Strasbourg, he cultivates his garden and enjoys the green spaces “so well-looked after”. He appreciates the abundance of the cultural offers, and the possibility to practice sport for all ages, the spaces for cycling, and is passionate about the Rhine region mystic. “Strasbourg has a heart, he says, quoting Oxfam and Emmaus, whom he is involved with. “Strasbourg is able to get involved for illegal immigrants or also hostage journalists.” His favourite restaurants : Osaka (50, rue du Jeu-desenfants), "La Cuccina di Mamma mia" (17, rue Geiler), "Le Liban Nord", (6, place du Marché-aux-vins), resto the Musée d'Art moderne’s restaurant for the view and the atmosphere. And of course the winstubs. His favourite café remains Le Brandt, he is waiting impatiently for the re-opening. He exhibited a few sketches there. Er besitzt einen britischen und einen irischen Pass, spricht neun Sprachen und hat ständig eine neue Reise im Kopf. Für Straßburg jedoch hat sich David Mardell als seinen Hafen entschieden. Wenn es nicht sogar Straßburg war, das sich für ihn entschieden hat… 1954 hat Mardell seine Koffer im Hôtel du Centre in Colmar abgestellt. Nicht, weil er dort schlafen wollte, sondern um der Arbeit willen. Niemals hätte er gedacht, dass er einmal, nach zahlreichen Umwegen, hoher Beamter des Europarats werden würde. In Straßburg war er anfangs Englischlehrer an der Ingenieurschule, anschließend Korrespondent für Reuters und die Times. Ab 1962 arbeitete David Mardell in der Pressestelle des Europarats, bis er dort 1977 die Leitung der Kulturabteilung übernahm. Eine Kursänderung, die er als großes Glück bezeichnet. «In den 1990er Jahren erlebte ich mit, wie sehr die osteuropäischen Länder unsere Unterstützung auf dem Weg zur Demokratie benötigten." Später war er für die Organisation der großen Ausstellungen des Europarats verantwortlich, engagierte sich aber auch als Mitbegründer des europäischen Künstleraustauschs "Apollonia" und 1988 des Literaturfestivals "Etonnants voyageurs" in Saint-Malo. An Straßburg schätzt der passionierte Hobbygärtner die gepflegten Grünanlagen und das große Kulturangebot, die vielfältigen Möglichkeiten, auch in seinem Alter noch Sport zu treiben (zum Beispiel mit dem Rad) und er begeistert sich für die rheinische Mystik. " Straßburg ist eine Stadt mit Herz ", sagt er. Diese Stadt setzt sich sogar für Obdachlose oder entführte Journalisten ein. Seine Lieblingsrestaurants : « Osaka » (50, rue du Jeu-desenfants), "La Cuccina di Mamma mia" (17, rue Geiler), "Le Liban Nord", (6, place du Marché-aux-vins), das Restaurant des Musée d'Art moderne, wegen der Aussicht und der Atmosphäre. Und natürlich die Weinstuben. Sein Lieblingscafé ist und bleibt das Café Brandt, dessen Wiedereröffnung er herbeisehnt. Er hat dort schon Dutzende von Skizzen für Aquarelle angefertigt. Difficile de dire ce qui séduit le plus lorsque l'on franchit la porte du Bouchon Brionnais. Ce subtil équilibre entre spécialités lyonnaises et cuisine du marché ? L'ambiance bistrot chic mais jamais hautaine ? Ou la personnalité du patron, Vincent Vigneron, ancien de l'École hôtelière de Strasbourg, qui a cette qualité rare de vous faire sentir chez vous dès la première rencontre ? Un peu comme s'il accueillait de vieux amis autour d'une bouteille de petit producteur ou d'une bonne table d'antan. Sans doute tout est-ce tout cela à la fois que l'on aime chez cet homme à la générosité gourmande qui a su en à peine trois ans ressusciter un nom tenu pendant 18 ans par l'emblématique « Claudie ». Sur l'ardoise noire, quenelles de brochet, saucisson brioché, œuf en meurette, tablier de sapeur (gras double pané), côtoient sans rougir tartare charolais au couteau, entrecôte Simmental, onglet aux échalions. Autant de plats et de viandes qui font depuis la reprise du Bouchon par Vincent le succès de cet établissement de plus en plus convoité. Autre atout de charme, le caveau qui refait peau neuve pour la mi-février. Un nouvel espace privatisable que Vincent a voulu dédicacé à l'univers viticole avec une séduisante carte de vins, des planchettes de fromages tel que le Saint-Marcellin et autres charcuteries de pays. Dans cette ambiance plus feutrée où se lovent banquettes et vieux tonneaux, le diner pourra également se clôturer, tout en détente, autour d'un Cognac millésimé ou encore d'un vieux rhum rare. Avant, qui sait, de se laisser tenter de rester, le temps d'une ou plusieurs nuitées, dans l'un des trois appartements également mis à disposition par l'établissement.

AU BOUCHON BRIONNAIS : THE GOURMAND GENEROSITY It is hard to say what seduces the most once you come in the Bouchon Brionnais. Is it this subtle balance between Lyons specialities and a farmer market cuisine? Or is it the “bistrot chic” but never snobbish atmosphere? Or maybe it is the owner’s personality. Vincent Vigneron comes from Strasbourg’s Ecole Hotellière, and he has this rare ability to make you feel at home as soon as you meet him. A bit like if he invited a few old friends around a drink or an old fashioned meal. Or probably a combination of all that. This generous man succeeded in bringing a place owned by the emblematic “Claudie” back to life. Written on a black menu board, the menu offers quenelles de brochet, saucisson en brioche, eggs en meurette, “tablier de sapeur”, but also a tartare charolais, ou a Simmental entrecôte. All those dishes make the success of this more and more popular establishment. Another asset is the wine cellar being refurbished by the end of February. A new space that can be booked for private functions, all dedicated to the wine universe, where a lovely wine list is on offer as well as platters to share, as

well as local delicatessen. In this cosy atmosphere surrounded by couches and old barrels, the diners can end up relaxing around a vintage brandy or an old rare rum, before, who knows, getting tempted to stay the night in one of the three accommodations available in this establishment.

AU BOUCHON BRIONNAIS : KULINARISCHE GROSSZÜGIGKEIT Es schwer zu sagen, was einen am meisten anspricht, wenn man die Eingangstür des Bouchon Brionnais durchschritten hat. Das feine Gleichgewicht zwischen lyonnaiser Spezialitäten und einer frischen, am Markt ausgerichteten Küche ? Die Atmosphäre eines schicken Bistros, die jedoch nie ins Arrogante abgleitet oder der Chef Vincent Vigneron, der die Hotelfachschule in Straßburg besucht hat, und die seltene Gabe besitzt, dass man sich bei ihm gleich von Anfang an zu Hause fühlt ? Ein bisschen ist es, als versammle er alte Freunde um eine gute Flasche Wein. Gewiss ist es all das zusammen, was wir an diesem großzügigen Gastgeber schätzen, der es in nur drei Jahren geschafft hat, eine Straßburger Institution auf Kurs zu halten, die von « Claudie » 18 Jahre lang erfolgreich geführt worden war. Auf der Schiefertafel stehen Hechtklößchen, Würstchen im Briocheteig, pochiertes Ei in Burgundersauce und Jägerschnitzel neben Tartar vom Charolais-Rind und Entrecôte Simmental. Di Küche macht den Erfolg des Restaurants aus, das ständig an Beliebtheit hinzugewinnt. Ein weiterer Pluspunkt ist der Keller, der Mitte Februar umgestaltet wird. Vincent Vigneron wollte einen Bereich, den man für Privatgesellschaften abtrennen kann, allein seiner ausgezeichneten Weinkarte wegen, zu der verschiedene Wurstspezialitäten reicht. In gdämpfter Atmosphäre mit Bänken und alten Fässern wird man das Abendessen in entspannter Runde mit einem Cognac oder einem alten Rhum abschließen können. Bevor man möglicherweise in einem der Appartments nächtigt, die im oberen Stock des Hauses für einige Tage oder auch länger zur Verfügung stehen.

Situé au cœur de la Neustadt et de l'Avenue des Vosges, l'Atelier, ouvert en 2004 par Philippe et Evelyne Koller, est une adresse rare que les Strasbourgeois peinent à partager. Parce que, justifient-ils, l'endroit a quelque chose d'un cocon. Qui se mérite, presque, à l'abris du tourbillon de la vie et des flots touristiques. Un cocon dû à la qualité d'une élégante cuisine de saison, associant foies gras, poissons fumés, araignées de veau, Highland Cattles, entrecôtes de race à viande, onglets servis tranchés, truites des Vosges ou encore viande de cabris. Pour ces macérations, aussi. Ces éblouissantes Aspérules odorantes, liqueurs de noix et Reines des prés que Philippe prépare à base de fleurs sauvages qu'il va lui-même récolter avant de les sublimer au contact des alcools de l'ami, du « personnage »

L'ATELIER : THE ADDRESS STRASBOURG PEOPLE WOULD LIKE TO KEEP FOR THEMSELVES Situated in the heart of the Neustadt, Philippe and Evelyne Koller’s Atelier is a precious address Strasbourg people are not keen on sharing. Because they claim the place has something very “cocoony”.It nearly has to be earnt. It is set away from touristic life and flows. A cocoon because of the quality of an elegant seasonal cuisine, associating foie gras, smoked fish, veal, prime cuts of sliced beef, trout from the Vosges, or kid meat. Also the liquors: those amazing asperulas, walnut liquors, and Reines des près that Philippe prepares with wild flowers that he picks up himself because subliming them with alcohols from Willy Hagmeyer’s distillery. All those stored next to more little treasures such as this absinth from Pontarlier or other Whiskies such as Monkey Shoulder and Caol. Also, those marvellous grand crus d’Alsace by Seppi Landmann, who was the first Ice wines producer. We can understand why the Strasbourg people are secretive about this place. They just love to keep on feeling privileged, as it does not simply feel like going to the restaurant, but just to some old friends’ house. Because the reception is exceptional and precious. It is also a place where many artists and photographers take refuge. So yes, join l’Atelier, we can only advise you to, but shhhh, don’t spread the word around too much, please.

L'ATELIER : DIESE ADRESSE HÄTTEN DIE STRASSBURGER LIEBER FÜR SICH BEHALTEN Philippe und Evelyne Kollers im Herzen der Neustadt gelegenes Restaurant L'Atelier ist eine der wenigen Adressen, die wir Straßburger nicht gerne weitergeben. Weil das 2004 eröffnete Restaurant etwas von einem beschützenden Kokon hat. Als ob man es sich verdienen müsste, hier abseits des Alltagslärms und der Touristenströme Gast zu sein und die exzellente, elegante Küche genießen zu dürfen. Je nach Saison finden sich Foie gras, geräucherter Fisch, Highland Cattles, erstklassiges Entrecôte, Forellen aus den Vogesen oder Zicklein auf der Karte. Als ob man sich diese Kasteiungen erst einmal verdienen müsste. Und dann wären da diese Liköre, ein verblüffender Genuss, aus Waldmeister, Walnüssen und Wildpflanzen, die Philippe Meyer nicht nur eigenhändig herstellt. Er sammelt auch selbst die Ingredenzien dafür. So viel der Köstlichkeiten reihen sich auf der Theke des Restaurants aneinander und gesellen sich zu anderen Schätzen, diesmal weit weg von ihrem Herkunftsort wie der Absinth aus Pontarlier oder erstklassige Whisky-Marken wie Monkey Shoulder und Caol Ila. Und dann wären da einige der besten Weine aus dem Elsass, die Grand Crus von Seppi Landmann, der um der Vollständigkeit Genüge zu tun, der erste in der Region war, der Eisweine hergestellt hat. Wer hier ein Essen genießt, weiß das wie ein Privileg zu schätzen, als sei er zu Gast bei alten Freunden. Weil auch der Service zuvorkommend wie keinesfalls selbstverständlich ist. Weshalb das Restaurant zweifellos von Künstlern und Fotografen geschätzt wird, die sich gerne an diesen Ort flüchten. Mehr als Ihnen dieses Restaurant ans Herz zu legen, können wir nicht. Aber bitte, sagen Sie es nicht zu oft weiter...

Le tout, rangé sur le haut du comptoir de l'Atelier, aux côtés d'autres petits trésors, cette fois expatriés de leur terre natal, comme cette absynthe de Pontarlier ou autres whisky Monkey Shoulder et Caol Ila. Et puis, ces vins merveilleux, ces grands crus d'Alsace de Seppi Landmann, qui, pour la petite histoire, fut le premier à se lancer dans la production de Vins de glace. Somme toute, on comprend cette retenue à partager. D'aimer continuer à se sentir privilégié, comme l'on irait manger non pas simplement au restaurant mais mais presque à la table de vieux amis. Parce que l'accueil, lui aussi y est rare et précieux. L'une des raisons, sans doute aussi, qui le fait apprécier d'artistes ou de photographes qui aiment s'y réfugier. Alors oui, rejoignez l'Atelier, on ne pourra que trop vous le conseiller, mais chut, ne le dites pas trop, s'il vous plaît...

The address is confidential, situated in the bottom of a courtyard near the train station district, but it is worth seeing. La première fois que l'on a rencontré Philippe Meyer, c'était rue Sainte Madeleine. Dans sa boutique un brin girly aux ambiances fifties, objets déco tendance kitsch'n pop tranchaient déjà dans le paysage morne de l'époque. Depuis, quelques années ont passé. Face à un bouche-àoreille grandissant, changement de lieu mais pas de décor et déménagement rue des Bouchers où il dirige désormais deux boutiques. L'une dédiée au petit mobilier, textiles et bijoux, l'autre à la papeterie. Mais sans jamais se renier. « Le seul maître mot est : que ce soit différent ! », s'amuset-il. Tête de rennes en crochet coton, affiches graphiques, coussins Laissez Lucie Faire, portemonnaies Mr and Mrs Clynk, sacs Les Touristes, CathKidson ou Pampa et Pop, vêtements et bijoux Nice Things, textiles et luminaires Madame Mo, lampes oiseaux Mathieu Challières, vintage scandinaves, Philippe cherche ses inspirations entre Londres et Berlin, Stockholm et Barcelone avec quelques AR en Asie ou aux États-Unis. Selon l'humeur et les envies mais toujours avec cette furieuse envie de surprendre et de séduire, avant d'ouvrir un nouveau volet de l'histoire de Mémé, courant mars : un sous-sol, un escalier plus bas, entièrement dédié à l'ameublement.

The first time we met Philippe Meyer was in rue Sainte-Madeleine. In his shop, a bit girly with a 50’s atmosphere, a few objects with some “kitsch’n pop” tendencies, contrasting against the dull landscape of those times. A few years later, because of a growing popularity, a change of scene was necessary, but the décor remained the same in rue des Bouchers where he now manages two shops. One dedicated to small furniture, textile and jewellery, the other one to stationary. “The only motto is “it has to be different” he says, amused. Reindeers heads made out of

crocheted cotton, graphic posters, cushions from Laissez Lucie Faire, purses from Mr and Mrs Clynk, bags from Les Touristes, Cath Kidson or Pampa et Pop, clothes and jewelry by Nice things, textile and lamps by Madame Mo, Bird-lamps by Mathieu Challières, Scandinavian vintage. Philippe looks for inspiration between London, Berlin, Stockholm and Barcelona with a few trips to Asia or the US. All depending on the mood, but always with this furious will to surprise and seduce, before opening a new chapter in the story of Mémé, mid Mars: A basement floor, entirely dedicated to furniture.

Als wir Philippe Meyer zum ersten Mal begegnet sind, hatte er seinen Laden noch in der Rue Sainte Madeleine. Dort bot er Girly-Schick mit Fifties-Charme und poppig-kitschige Dekoobjekte. « Omi in Österreich » war ein Lichtblick in all dem Einheitsbrei. Seitdem sind ein paar Jahre vergangen und dank seines zunehmenden Bekanntheitsgrades und einem Ortswechsel in die Rue des Bouchers darf man sich nun über gleich zwei Shops nach dem bewährten Konzept freuen. Im einen verkauft er Wohnaccessoires, Textilien und Schmuck, im anderen originelle und schöne Papierwaren. Bei der Auswahl seines Sortiments zählt nur ein Kriterium : « Es muss anders sein ! », sagt Meyer amüsiert. Und was gibt es dort ? Gehäkelte Rentierköpfe, Plakate, Kissen, Portmonnaies und Taschen in ungewöhnlichen Designs, Kleidung und Schmuck, Leuchten und Vintage-Objekte aus Skandinavien. Nach Ideen sucht Philippe in London und Berlin, in Stockholm und Barcelona oder auch einmal in Asien oder den USA. Je nachdem, wonach ihm der Sinn steht, aber immer mit seiner unbändigen Lust, zu überraschen und zu verführen. Im März schlägt er ein neues Kapitel von « Mémé » auf. Einen Stock tiefer eröffnet er einen Verkaufsraum, in dem er ausschließlich Möbel präsentiert. FÉVRIER 2014 •
