Better Nutrition for PLHIV/AIDS Infant Feeding Options from a Mother infected with HIV

The importance of nutrition for people living with HIV

Exclusive and Continued Breastfeeding: It is recommended in countries with a growing proportion of children with other diseases such as diarrhea and respiratory diseases and malnutrition, which increase the likelihood of child mortality. The important role breastfeeding in protecting children from these diseases is emphasized. Exclusive and continued breastfeeding is also emphasized in the case of lack of to breast milk alternatives for economic reasons.

Good nutrition is essential for growth and development and for the maintenance and restoration of tissues and cells and for resistance to disease and infection. Therefore, proper and good nutrition of people living with HIV, is reflected, on the whole community and PLHIV becomes tender and productive and can participate in the desired development of their own lives as well as their families and hence communities. The aim of good nutrition is to support and improve the quality of life of people living with HIV to be effective and productive members and is able to interacting positively with society. Good nutrition is also help in making the most of treatments and medicines they take.

Early breastfeeding cessation and replacement of breast milk: Advise the mother about the importance of starting to replace the milk as rapidly as possible and not given during infancy other milks so as not to increase the likelihood of transmission to baby. It is also important to give advice on how to prevent breast engorgement Extracted Mother's milk after being heated: Extracted mother milk needs to provide advice on how to extract and boil breast milk to in a small bowl and leave to cool. The milk is given in a cup or spoon in a period not to exceed an hour after the milk is boiled. Replacement feeding: Is how to feed the baby, who did not breastfeed at all? Replacement feeding is giving all the nutrients (including micronutrients), this till the child is able to entirely depend on the family food

Objective of the Interventions to PLHIV

Nutritional

An effective program of nutritional care and support will improve the quality of life of people living with HIV/AIDS, by:

     

Maintaining body weight and strength; Replacing lost vitamins and minerals; Improving the function of the immune system and the body’s ability to fight infection; Extending the period from infection to the development of the AIDS disease; Improving response to treatment; reducing time and money spent on health care; Keeping HIV-infected people active, allowing them to take care of themselves, their family and children; and Keeping HIV-infected people productive, able to work, grow food and contribute to the income of their families.

Importance of Good Nutrition:   

Good nutrition help body growth and development and maintenance and repair of body’s tissues Good nutrition makes you feel that you are strong and fit Good nutrition helps support and improve the immune system regardless of the situation of the HIV Good nutrition delays the progress of the HIV and the development of the AIDS symptoms Good nutrition help you to productive and be able to do your own in-house and personal activities Good nutrition may stop weight loss Good nutrition is very importance with regard to the drug’s efficacy.


Food and HIV Drugs’ Interactions Vomiting Drink plenty of fluids after meals. If a person is too sick to eat, small and frequent drinks of water, fruit juice and vegetable soups may help Try not to prepare food yourself. The smell of preparing or cooking food may worsen the feeling of nausea. Ask somebody else to prepare food or eat foods that require little preparation. keep drinking small amounts of water, soups and spice teas

Drugs Side effects

Drug interactions with food:

Notes that many of the drugs used to treat HIV or for the treatment of opportunistic infections result in several disturbing side effects such as;

There are several forms and types of interaction of food and medicine, including: 1. The impact of food on the efficiency of drug action 2. Drug effect on the efficiency of absorption of nutrients and metabolism and distribution of nutrients within the body and the excretion processes 3. Side effects of the drug on eating food and absorption of nutrients 4. For individuals who consume alcoholic beverages, the (ARVs) cause inflammation of the pancreas while “Isoniazid” medication is causing the inflammation of the liver.

       

Changing the taste, Nausea, Anorexia, Emphysema, Burning, Constipation, Vomiting and Diarrhea.

Drink plenty of fluids (water & juices , soups) every 10 minuets  eat small quantities of porridge, yoghurt, bananas  Do not eat uncooked vegetables or drink sweetened fluids because they worsen the situation of diarrhea  Cough The food must be well done and semi liquid if possible

Drink plenty of water. Water better than any medical treatment because it helps out phlegm. Reduce the inflammation of the throat by drinking tea with lemon and honey. Or by herbal therapy. You can work this mixture to treat all kinds particularly dry cough. Take one teaspoon of this mixture (every two or three hours), one teaspoon of water + teaspoon of honey + one

Nutritional Interventions at Home Fever

Cold the body by pouring water, : wrap the skin with cloth soaked in cold water on the chest and head Drink plenty of water, even if you are not thirsty. Take Panadol, Aspirin, Keep a clean, dry skin and use lotion or corn-starch to help prevent rashes and boils to appear

Food decreases the absorption of Aspirin (reduced pain).  Food reduces absorption of TB anti-inflammatory such as Isoniazid and Rifampin.  Food reduces the absorption of (ARV) such as Indinavir.  High-fat diets help to make some (ARV) more available, which helps to absorb the majority of such medication Tenovir.  But it reduces the absorption of some drugs such as Zidovidune and drug Indinavir.  When using drugs such as Isoniazid we need to increase some nutrients’ intake such as vitamin (B6), When using Rifampin we need to increase the intake of vitamin D, so that the benefit of these drugs is significant.

Good nutrition means eating variety of foods as, no one food contains all the necessary nutrients required by our bodies. The only exception is the Breast Milk up to 6 months.
