Estimado Sr. Hansen, Deseo felicitarle a usted y al equipo de trabajo del periódico El Osceola Star por 25 años de continuo servicio a nuestra diversa y continuamente creciente comunidad.

Mientras la comunidad Hispana del Distrito 43 continúa creciendo, sus esfuerzos para mantener nuestra comunidad

informada son un servicio ejemplar tanto para nuestros constituyentes de habla hispana como los de habla inglesa. El periódico El Osceola Star siempre ha procurado proveer a la población del Condado Osceola los eventos actuales y los esfuerzos de líderes comunitarios; con el fin de informarles sobre cómo estos

Valencia College- Noticias / News Valencia Celebra Ceremonia para Colocar la Primera Piedra del Campus de Poinciana Kissimmee, FL – Con la fase inicial de construcción ya en proceso, Valencia College llevó a cabo una ceremonia para colocar la primera piedra para la nueva construcción del Campus de Poinciana a un costo de $27 millones, el jueves, 19 de mayo a las 9 a.m. El Campus de Poinciana dará oportunidades para muchos que no pueden asistir a clases en el Campus de Osceola, lo que representa dos horas de viaje en autobús y 45 minutos en auto.

Cuando abra en otoño de 2017, el campus ofrecerá a 2,500 estudiantes buscando obtener un título, así como adiestramiento a 1,000 estudiantes adicionales que busquen adiestramiento para

trabajar.

Actualmente, Valencia ofrece matemáticas, redacción para estudiantes de primer año, de cómo dirigirse al público y otros cursos de educación general en Liberty High School que pueden solicitar un grado asociado en artes.

“Creemos que este campus hará posible la educación post secundaria para más estudiantes de Poinciana,” dijo Kathleen Plinske, presidenta en los campus de Valencia en Poinciana, Osceola y Lake Nona. Right now, the number of high school graduates who go on to college is far lower in Osceola than in neighboring counties, and the rate of college attendance is lowest for Liberty and Poinciana high schools.

Although Valencia leaders had been eyeing a possible Poinciana Campus since 2003, it was the united efforts of state legislators, county leaders, community partners and college officials that provided the momentum needed to make the new campus a reality.

In March, Gov. Rick Scott approved the final $12.1 million in funding needed to open a campus in Poinciana. Central Florida’s legislative delegation also played a key role, led by Rep. Mike La Rosa and Sen. Darren Soto. Osceola

County donated 19 acres of land for the campus at the intersection of Pleasant Hill and Reaves roads.

DLR Group is the architectural firm for the project and Clancy & Theys is the construction manager. Once complete, the campus will house 11 classrooms, two computer labs, a science lab and a culinary teaching kitchen. Other architectural features in the 65,000-square-foot building will include: •An indoor/outdoor cafe area •Native landscaping Poinciana trees

•A two-story campus library with multiple settings for studying, group collaboration and tutoring.

The library will be elevated into a “treehouse” concept to overlook the Poinciana trees in the courtyard to the west and the natural conservation to the east.

As you may know, Toho Square is the current home of the Bette Sprinkle Memorial Statue and with the upcoming development project we will be looking to relocate the statue.

Bette Sprinkle, dubbed the “First Lady of Osceola County” in 1997, was a pillar in our downtown community.

She ran a family business, Draperies and Interiors by Bette & Lauren, lived in downtown Kissimmee with her

president of the Downtown Business Association (DBA) for 25 years.

Sprinkle was downtown Kissimmee’s biggest activist and spent 42 years truly caring about every aspect of downtown Kissimmee. As we gear up for the exciting changes ahead, we are looking for the community’s help to relocate this extremely important statue.

St Cloud - Noticias / News Bomberos de St Cloud Estrenan nuevo camión Municipio de St. Cloud, FL – St. Cloud Fire Rescue (SCFR) presentó una ceremonia para “retroceder” y dedicar su nuevo camión de bomberos Squad 31 el 16 de mayo en la Estación de Bomberos #31. Una ceremonia de “retroceder” (llamada Push Back Ceremony) es una tradición dentro del cuerpo de bomberos que vuelve al tiempo cuando los carros de bomberos tirados por caballos tenían que ser desenganchados de los caballos y retrocedidos manualmente por los bomberos hasta la estación.

“Esta ceremonia le hace homenaje a nuestro pasado y también celebra nuestro futuro”, dijo el jefe de bomberos de SCFR Bill Sturgeon.

“Recordamos nuestra extensa historia con una ceremonia de mojar y retroceder ya que ambos traen gran orgullo para nuestros equipos. La ceremonia de mojar el nuevo camión es la bendición para el nuevo camión antes de ser puesto en servicio. El camión retirado se convertirá en un camión de entrenamiento para el departamento. St. Cloud Fire Rescue personnel ‘push back’, put into service a new engine City of St. Cloud, FL – St. Cloud Fire Rescue (SCFR) hosted a Push Back and Dedication Ceremony for its new Squad 31, May 16, at Fire Station #31. A push back ceremony is a tradition within the fire service that goes back to when horse-drawn carts were unhooked from the horses and pushed back into the station by hand.

“This ceremony honors our past as we celebrate our future,” said SCFR Chief Bill Sturgeon. “We remember our rich history with a wet down and push back ceremony as both bring great pride for our crews. Al Editor / To The Editor La importancia del hermanamiento de Isla Mujeres Mexico con St. Petersburg Florida Por Juan Sabines Guerrero Dos meses atrás, el 26 de febrero de 2016, junto con Agapito Magaña, Presidente Municipal de Isla Mujeres y el Cónsul Adscrito Roberto Nicolas acudimos al City Hall de la ciudad de St. Petersburg, para extender la mano y proponer el Hermanamiento con Isla Mujeres al alcalde Rick Kriseman.

La ciudad de St. Petersburg, Florida, ubicada en la Bahía de Tampa es la de mayor ingreso per cápita en esa área, debido en parte a que varios empresarios establecen su residencia en dicho lugar, una bella ciudad de gran atractivo para la organización de eventos como la Indy Car que cada año recorre sus calles, el Festival de Cine Sunscreen, con espacios culturales como el Museo Dalí, académicos como la Universidad del Sur de la Florida, con la carrera de Oceanografía. Además de ser la casa de los Tampa Bay Rays, que juegan en las ligas mayores de beisbol y contar con un reconocido e histórico club de yates.

Y qué decir de Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo uno de los destinos turísticos favoritos de los extranjeros que visitan nuestro país, una hermosa ciudad, hoy ya “Pueblo Mágico” sencillamente un paraíso de playas limpias, arena blanca y mar en todos los tonos de azul, hogar de gran cantidad de especies marinas.

También cuenta con un reconocido e histórico club de yates.

Ambas ciudades comparten mar e historias, como la Regata “De Sol a Sol” que desde hace 48 años se realiza desde St. Pete a Isla Mujeres, una carrera de yates que ha significado convivencia, turismo y desde luego, derrama económica desde hace medio siglo para Isla Mujeres.

Esta regata no hubiera sido posible sin la visión de don Miguel Alemán Valdés, expresidente de México, que en su calidad de Presidente del Consejo Nacional de Turismo, ante el rompimiento de las relaciones de Estados Unidos con Cuba, país a donde llegaba la regata desde la década de los 30’s, contactó y visitó a los organizadores de la Regata en St. Pete para invitarlos a viajar a Isla Mujeres, ante la necesidad de un nuevo destino, lo que se concretó en mayo de 1969, y sigue vigente.

Sin embargo, ante la reciente apertura de Cuba y sus renovadas relaciones con los Estados Unidos, varios navegantes propusieron regresar la regata a su destino original, en lugar de navegar hacia Isla Mujeres, por lo que había que firmar el Acuerdo de Hermanamiento, celebrar y fortalecer la Regata “De Sol a Sol”, para que permanezca en la ruta a la Riviera Maya.

Posteriormente acudimos con los alcaldes Kriseman y Magaña, con el representante del C. Gobernador del Estado de Quintana Roo, de los Poderes Legislativo y Judicial de ese Estado, el Comodoro Richard Wimyng y con la Delegada de la Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores, en Quintana Roo, Silvia Sofía Saldaña Gutiérrez, a la develación de la placa conmemorativa que sella este hecho, ante el pueblo de Isla Mujeres.

Los participantes de la regata, ahí mismo recibieron los trofeos perpetuos que celebran y agradecen su visita a esta tierra de sol y arena.

Se detona así una relación más profunda entre los pueblos de Isla Mujeres y St. Pete, el mencionado hermanamiento contribuirá a afianzar relaciones comerciales, turísticas y educativas entre ambas ciudades.

Este hecho es sólo una pieza, de lo que debe ser una estrategia para fortalecer el posicionamiento de la Riviera Maya en el ánimo de los turistas de Florida, ante la ya mencionada apertura con Cuba, que ahora se convierte en un destino competitivo más en la región del Caribe, que sin duda celebramos.

Es de subrayarse el significado y trascendencia que por sí misma tiene la visita del Alcalde Rick Kriseman a Isla Mujeres para la firma del Hermanamiento. Kriseman es uno de los líderes políticos en un estado conservador que aprecia la relación con México, según el mismo lo expresa, está interesado en generar con sus gobernados una amplia gama de oportunidades para St. Petersburg y para México. Él ve en este Hermanamiento un mecanismo útil de colaboración, es sin duda la oportunidad de crear sinergia.

Su visita a México es otra muestra más de la fortaleza de la relación bilateral, de la entrañable amistad entre ambas naciones. Felicidades Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo; felicidades St. Petersburg, Florida, son otro ejemplo más, que inspira el trabajo presente de muchos, incluyendo el del Consulado de México en Orlando, y dan sentido al porvenir, en el entendimiento profundo, el mar no nos separa, nos convoca a navegar en beneficio de ambos pueblos.

The city of St. Petersburg, Florida, located in Tampa Bay has the highest per capita income in that area, due in part to the fact that several businessmen establish their residence in that place, a beautiful city very attractive for the organization of events like Indy Car which every year passes through its streets, the Sunscreen Film Festival, with cultural spaces such as the Dali Museum, academics like the University of South Florida, with its great Oceanography. Besides being the home of the Tampa Bay Rays, who play in major league baseball and counting with a recognized and historic yacht club.

And what can we say about Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, one of the favorite tourist destinations of foreigners who visit our country, a beautiful city, known as "Magic Town" simply a paradise of clean beaches, white sand, and sea in all the tones of blue, home to many marine species. It also has a renowned and historic yacht club.

Both cities share sea and stories, such as the Regata "De Sol a Sol" which for 48 years has been done from St. Pete to Isla Mujeres, a yacht race that has meant coexistence, tourism and of course, economic flow since half a century ago to Isla Mujeres.

Osceola County - Noticias / News Transición de Facturación entre Toho Water Authority y KUA y de la Ciudad continuarán llegando Kissimmee, FL – Recientemente Toho Water Authority (Toho) envió cartas a clientes de KUA informándoles que KUA dejará de ser su agente proveedor de servicio al cliente para sus servicios de agua en un futuro cercano. The transition of Toho water customers from KUA is the final step of a three part phased approach that began in 2014.

Presently, 44,000 accounts from the first two phases have migrated to the new system.

Toho and KUA are working diligently to make this final transition as smooth as possible for our customers.

By the summer of 2016, Toho expects to transition all remaining customers over to their own Customer Information System (CIS). When completed, these customers will begin to use Toho for making their water bill payments and all their customer service needs.

Two separate bills Once the transition is complete customers will begin to receive two bills one of which will be from Toho for their water utility services. Their electric and City services bill will continue to come from KUA. Toho’s water bill will have a lot more information regarding water usage and customers will be able to track their consumption over the past months. This will bring about more water consumption awareness and foster water efficiency.

Four ways to make payments.

Once KUA customers receive their first water bill from Toho Water Authority, they will begin to use Toho’s selection of payment options. Customers will be able to pay their bill by

mail, over the phone, online or at select payment locations.

The select payment locations include all Amscots, and any commercial establishments that offer MoneyGram services such as CVS and Walmart. These walk in locations carry a $1.25 convenience fee. Toho receives no portion of this convenience fee. Payment methods that carry no convenience fees are e-checks and payments sent by mail.

After the transition has occurred, customers will need to register their water utility account online to make bank drafts or other types of online payments for their water utility service.

Customers can also create an online payment account using Toho’s online payment system.

This payment system can also be used for making one-time payments without creating an account and it has a mobile app.

Toho Water Authority facilities are not equipped to accept walkin or drop-off payments.

Expanded call center Toho has expanded its customer service call center to assist customers with water inquires and services over the phone.

Customers can call for questions relating to their bill, services or water usage. Starting, stopping or moving your water services can be handled easily online at www.tohowater.com or over the phone. Toho facilities are not equipped with walk-in customer service centers. All services and assistance can be easily taken care of by contacting Toho’s customer call center at 863-4961770.

For now Customers should continue to address any inquiries to their KUA account representatives until they receive their first bill from Toho Water Authority. Temporary Protected Status Extended for Honduras and Nicaragua

Washington - El secretario de Seguridad Nacional, Jeh Johnson ha extendido el Estatus de Protección Temporal (TPS) para los nacionales elegibles de Honduras y Nicaragua (y los que no tienen nacionalidad cuya última residencia haya sido en Honduras y Nicaragua) por un período adicional de 18 meses, a partir del 6 de julio de 2016 hasta el 5 de enero 2018.

Una vez que recibamos los documentos, vamos a analizarlos en nuestros sistemas para el procesamiento. Los solicitantes que hayan completado adecuadamente su formulario recibirán un aviso de aceptación de cuenta USCIS a vuelta de correo con instrucciones sobre cómo crear una cuenta en línea de USCIS.

Los actuales beneficiarios del TPS de Honduras y Nicaragua que quieren extender su TPS deben reinscribirse durante el período de reinscripción de 60 días que va del 16 de mayo de 2016 hasta el 15 de julio de 2016. El Servicio de Ciudadanía e Inmigración (USCIS) estimula a los beneficiarios a reregistrarse tan pronto como sea posible, una vez que comienza el período de reinscripción de 60 días.

Una cuenta en línea permite a los solicitantes:

Autorización de Empleo: La extensión de 18 meses del TPS permite re-registro para solicitar un nuevo Documento de Autorización de Empleo (EAD). Volver a registrarse en el TPS: Para volver a registrar, los actuales beneficiarios del TPS deben presentar: • Formulario I-821, Solicitud de Estatus de Protección Temporal (re-registro no tienen que pagar por la solicitud Formulario I-821); • Formulario I-765, Solicitud de Autorización de Empleo, independientemente de si quieren un EAD; • La cuota por la solicitud de la Forma I-765 (o una solicitud de exención de pago) solamente si quieren un EAD. Si el re-registrante no desea un EAD, no se requiere ninguna cuota de solicitud; y • La cuota por los servicios de biométrica (o una solicitud de exención para pagar) si tienen 14 años o más.

Washington Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson has extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for eligible nationals of Honduras and Nicaragua (and those without nationality who last habitually resided in Honduras and Nicaragua) for an additional 18 months, effective July 6, 2016, through Jan. 5, 2018.

Current TPS Honduras and Nicaragua beneficiaries who want to extend their TPS must re-register during the 60-day re-registration period that runs from May 16, 2016 through July 15, 2016. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) encourages beneficiaries to re-register as soon as possible once the 60-day re-registration period begins.

Employment Authorization: The 18-month extension allows TPS re-registrants to apply for a new Employment Authorization Document (EAD). Those who re-register during the 60-day period and request a new EAD will receive one with an expiration date of Jan. 5, 2018.

USCIS recognizes that some re-registrants may not receive their new EAD until after their current work permits expire. Therefore, we are automatically extending current TPS Honduras and Nicaragua EADs with a July 5, 2016 expiration date for six months. These existing EADs are now valid through Jan. 5, 2017.

Re-registering for TPS: To re-register, current TPS beneficiaries must submit: •Form I-821, Application for Temporary Protected Status (re-registrants do not need to pay the Form I-821 application fee); •Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, regardless of whether they want an EAD; •The Form I-765 application fee (or a fee-waiver request) only if they want an EAD. If the re-registrant does not want an EAD, no application fee is required; and •The biometric services fee (or a fee-waiver request) if they are age 14 or older.

Info for Nicaragua only Online Accounts: USCIS is transitioning to process TPS Nicaragua applications electronically; however, applicants must

continue to complete the paper forms and submit them by mail. Once we receive the documents, we will scan them into our systems for processing.

Applicants with properly filed submissions will receive a USCIS Account Acceptance Notice in the mail with instructions on how to create a USCIS online account.

An online account allows applicants to: •Check the status of their case; •Receive notifications and case updates; •Respond to requests for evidence; and •Manage contact information online, including address changes.

We will still process TPS Nicaragua applications even if applicants choose not to access their online account.

We will also send copies of case notifications via the U.S. Postal Service.

Fee-waiver requests must be accompanied by supporting documentation.

Puerto Rico - Noticias / News Cumbre de Puerto Rico 2016 – Hablando con Nuestra Comunidad Orlando, FL - El viernes, 13 de mayo de 2016, la Cumbre de Puerto Rico llevó a cabo su séptima cumbre anual “Sobre Asuntos de Puerto Rico" en el Doubletree Hilton de SeaWorld.

La Cumbre ha crecido y ahora recibe clientes y participantes de todas las regiones de la Florida, Puerto Rico, Washington D.C., Nueva York, California y de lugares tan lejanos como Kenia, África.

La Cumbre de este año contó con cuatro talleres y un almuerzo de negocios titulado "Puerto Rico - Florida: Los mercados que funcionan para usted".

Dynamic Community Development Corporation (CDC), una corporación 501 (c) 3 de desarrollo económico, es la principal organizadora de la Cumbre.

La Cumbre se celebra anualmente en la Florida Central. En el 2014, la población puertorriqueña de la Florida superó la marca del millón. Muchos de estos individuos se trasladan de otros estados hacia la Florida - pero la mayor parte de estos nuevos residentes de la Florida son puertorriqueños que se han trasladado desde la isla hacia el continente. El Centro de la Florida ha sido uno de los principales destinos de la migración de la población de Puerto Rico.

El objetivo de la Cumbre se mantiene constante y claro: Crear una visión para una mejor comunidad puertorriqueña en los Estados Unidos a través de la potenciación económica, social y ciudadana.

El primer taller de la Cumbre fue "Jóvenes Empresarios", moderado por Sonia Casablanca, MBA, MS / RMI, Profesora de Negocios de la Universidad de Valencia, Recinto de Osceola.

Uniéndose a ella como miembros del panel estuvieorn Julio Fuentes (Presidente de la Cámara Hispana del Estado de Florida y Hispanic CREO) y Inessa Briscoe-Pereira (Asesora Académica, de la Escuela Maverick en Kissimmee). El objetivo de este taller fue fomentar la creatividad y la imaginación en la próxima generación de líderes de negocios y empresarios - para animarles a pensar "fuera de la caja".

El segundo taller, titulado "Demografía de Puerto Rico y la Elección del 2016" fue moderado por Marie Masson Esq. (Vice - Presidenta, de la Asociación de Abogados de Puerto Rico en la Florida).

Este taller fue atractivo e informativo con una presentación especial por el investigador Carlos Vergas-Ramos, PHD (del Centro de Estudios Puertorriqueños, del Hunter College, Nueva York), que viajó a la Florida especialmente para la Cumbre. La presentación incluyó los últimos datos disponibles de los puertorriqueños dentro de los EEUU. La presentación fue recibida con entusiasmo. Formaron parte de este taller el Hon. Darren Soto (Senador del Estado de la Florida), Pilar Ávila (CEO, New America Alliance) y Frank Nieves (Presidente de la Cámara de Comercio de Puerto Rico/Hispana del Condado Broward). Se firmó un Memorando Especial de Entendimiento (MOU, siglas en inglés) entre New America Alliance y Dynamic CDC - organizadores de la Cumbre - para trabajar juntos en el futuro.

El tercer taller titulado "Sin Fines de Lucro "R" Motores Económicos"

fue moderado por Zoe Colón, MPA (Directora de Operaciones en Florida y el sudeste para la Federación Hispana).

El punto de esta discusión era demostrar la importancia de las organizaciones sin fines de lucro en el crecimiento de una comunidad. Como las organizaciones sin fines de lucro crean puestos de trabajo, prestan de servicios sociales y oportunidades económicas. Se unieron a este grupo especial el Hon. Victor Torres (Representante del Estado de la Florida), Yamira Lee Johnson (Co-Fundadora, de la organización comunitaria Alimenta y Fortifica), Gaby Ortigoni (Vicepresidenta del Hispanic Business Initiative Fund), y Pablo Velez (CAO, Centros Médicos Boriquen de Miami-Dade). Un memorando de entendimiento especial también fue firmado entre Dynamic CDC y la Federación Hispana - representada por su presidente, José Calderón, para cooperar en proyectos futuros.

La oradora principal del Almuerzo de Negocios de la Cumbre fue la Ex Tesorera de los Estados Unidos Rosario Marín. Sra. Marín habló de la inmigración como un componente clave en la política económica y cómo impacta directamente la competitividad de nuestra fuerza de trabajo. Ella animó a Washington a tomar medidas para hacer frente a la importación de trabajadores cualificados sin el impacto de la eliminación de empleos en Estados Unidos mediante la promulgación de leyes para actualizar los programas de visa (H-1B), (H-2A) y los programas de trabajadores estacionales (H-2B).

Representando a Puerto Rico en el almuerzo estuvo Ramón "Ray" Flores (Vicepresidente de AT&T Puerto Rico/ Islas Vírgenes de E.U.) quien habló sobre cómo el sector privado y AT&T siguen invirtiendo en Puerto Rico. Junto a Ray estuvo Troy McNichols, DPL (Director de Asuntos Legislativos y Externos de la Corporación AT&T para el Centro/Norte de la Florida) que expresaron su apoyo a la cumbre anual.

Durante el almuerzo, se entregaron reconocimientos a estudiantes de Valencia College y Mavericks High School que participaron en el primer concurso "Plan de Negocios” de la Cumbre. A los estudiantes ganadores les fueron presentadas i-pads y premios en efectivo y fueron alentados por los conferenciantes a perseguir su educación y sueños futuros.

El cuarto y último taller titulado "Crisis Fiscal de Puerto Rico" llenó la sala y fue objeto de gran interés para todos los asistentes a la Cumbre. El moderador fue Milton Vescovacci, Esq. (Gray-Robinson, Oficina de Miami) y los miembros del panel fueron Sonia Colón (Presidenta de Bancarrota y Derechos del Acreedor de Ferraiuoli LLC), Antonio SosaPascual (Fundador y Director General de REOF Capital LLC), Héctor Mayol, Esq. (Director Ejecutivo Interino de la Cámara de Comercio de Puerto Rico en San Juan), y William Ramos (Director de Asuntos Intergubernamentales del Departamento de Comercio de Estados Unidos en Washington, D.C.). El panel exploró y discutió enérgicamente las posibles causas históricas de la actual crisis fiscal de Puerto Rico - incluyendo la interrupción de la IRS 936 y las crisis financieras del 2000 y 2008 - las condiciones económicas actuales y la propuesta del Congreso – el proyecto de

ley HR 4900 (PROMESA) - y la medida de capítulo 9 prevista en el proyecto de ley para ayudar a reestructurar alguna de la deuda del gobierno de Puerto Rico de $ 72 mil millones. La audiencia finalmente pudo participar en una serie de preguntas y respuestas con los participantes en el panel. Se aprobó una resolución en la Cumbre - dirigida al Presidente, ciertos miembros del gabinete y al Congreso de los Estados Unidos - solicitando que se aprueben con prontitud la PROMESA en su sustancia.

2016 Puerto Rican Summit – Addressing our Community Orlando, FL - On Friday, May 13th, 2016, the Puerto Rican Summit held is seventh annual “Summit on Puerto Rican Affairs” at the Doubletree Hilton

by SeaWorld. The Summit has grown to host guests and participants from all regions of Florida, Puerto Rico, Washington D.C, New York, California and from as far away as Kenya, Africa.

This year’s Summit featured four workshops and a business luncheon meeting entitled “Puerto Rico – Florida: Markets that Work for You”. Dynamic Community Development Corporation (CDC), a 501 (c) 3 economic development corporation, is the prime organizer of the Summit.

The Summit is held annually in Central Florida.

In 2014, Florida’s Puerto Rican population surpassed has the one million mark. Many of these are individuals relocating from other states to Florida – but the bulk of these new Floridians are Puerto Ricans who have relocated from the Island to the Mainland. Central Florida has been one of the main destinations of this migrating Puerto Rican population.

The goal of the Summit remains constant and clear: To create a vision for a greater Puerto Rican community in the United States through economic,

social and civic empowerment.

The Summit’s first workshop was “Young Entrepreneurs”, moderated

by Sonia Casablanca, MBA, MS/RMI, Professor of Business at Valencia College, Osceola Campus. Joining her were panel members Julio Fuentes (President, Florida State Hispanic Chamber and Hispanic CREO) and Inessa Briscoe-Pereira (Academic Advisor, Maverick High-Kissimmee).

The objective of this workshop was to encourage creativity and imagination in the next generation of business leaders and entrepreneurs – to encourage them to think “outside the box”.

The Second Workshop, entitled “Puerto Rican Demographics and the 2016 Election” was moderated by Marie Masson Esq. (Vice - President, Puerto Rican Bar Association of Florida).

This workshop was engaging and informative with a special presentation by researcher Carlos Vergas-Ramos, PHD (Center for Puerto Rican Studies, Hunter College, New York), who traveled to Florida especially for the Summit. A special Memo of Understanding (MOU) was signed between New America Alliance and Dynamic CDC – organizers of the Summit – to work together in the future.

The third workshop entitled “Non-Profits “R” Economic Engines” was moderated

by Zoe Colon, MPA (Director of Florida & South-East Operations, Hispanic Federation). The point of this discussion was to demonstrate the importance of non-profit organizations to the growth of a community – that is – how non-profits create jobs, provide social services and economic opportunities. Joining this panel were Hon. Victor Torres (FL State Representative), Yamira Lee Johnson (Co-Founder, Feed & Fortify Community Organization), Gaby Ortigoni (Vice President, Hispanic Business Initiative Fund), and Paul Velez (CAO, Borinquen Medical Centers of Miami-Dade). A special MOU was also signed between Dynamic CDC and the Hispanic Federation – represented by its President, Jose Calderon, to cooperate on projects in the future.

The keynote speaker for the Summit Business Luncheon was former US Treasurer Rosario Marin. Ms. Marin spoke about immigration as a key

component in economic policy and how it directly impacts the competitiveness of our workforce. She encouraged Washington to take steps to address the importation of skilled workers without the impact of eliminating US jobs by enacting legislation to update the VISA programs (H-1B), (H-2A) and seasonal workers programs(H2B). Representing Puerto Rico at the luncheon was Ramon “Ray” Flores (Vice President AT&T Puerto Rico/USVI) who spoke about how the private sector and AT&T continue to invest in Puerto Rico.

Joining Ray was Troy McNichols, DPL (Director of AT&T Corporate External and Legislative affairs, Central/North Florida) who expressed his support for the annual Summit.

During the luncheon, awards were made to students from Valencia College and Mavericks High School who participated in the Summit’s first “Business Plan Contest”.

Winning students were presented with i-pads and monetary awards, and encouraged by speakers to pursue their education and future dreams.

The fourth and concluding workshop entitled “Puerto Rico’s Fiscal Crisis” filled the hall and was the subject of much interest to all Summit attendees. The Moderator was Milton Vescovacci, Esq. (Gray-Robinson, Miami Office) and panel members consisted of Sonia Colon (Chair, Bankruptcy & Creditor’s Rights, Ferraiuoli LLC), Antonio Sosa-Pascual (Founder &

Managing Director, REOF Capital LLC), Hector Mayol, Esq. (Acting Executive Director, Cámara de Comercio de Puerto Rico in San Juan), and William Ramos (Director, Intergovernmental Affairs, US Department of Commerce, Washington, D.C). The panel explored and vigorously discussed the possible historical causes of Puerto Rico’s current fiscal crisis – including the discontinuance of IRS 936 and the financial crisis of 2000 and 2008 – the current economic conditions and the congressional proposal – HR bill 4900 (PROMESA) – and the Chapter 9 measure provided in the bill to help restructure some of Puerto Rico’s $72 billion in government debt. The audience was engaged with a follow-up questions and an answer session of the panel participants. A resolution was adopted at the Summit – addressed to the President, certain Cabinet Members, and the US Congress – requesting that they promptly approve PROMESA in its substance.

Sin victorias en sus últimos 6 partidos Orlando, FL - Orlando City sufrió otro revés la semana pasada cuando viajó a Kansas City. Los Leones tuvieron problemas con la defensa y dejaron a Kansas City hacer 16 tiros en tan sólo la primera mitad.

Las cosas comenzaron a verse mejor para el equipo que trabajó para crear oportunidades para Orlando. En el minuto 67 de juego, anotaron el primer punto de su meta.

Winless in their past 6 matches Orlando City suffered another upset loss last week when they traveled to Kansas City. The Lions struggled defensively and allowed Kansas City 16 shots in just the first half. Things began looking up as the team worked to create opportunities for Orlando. In the 67th minute of play, they scored their first goal. It was technically a Kansas City own goal, but we’ll take it. Despite having the lead, Orlando never seemed to control the tempo of the match for too long. Seven minutes after Orlando scored, Kansas

answered. And just five minutes after that, they took the lead. Orlando never saw good opportunities after that. And now that they’ve hit a rough patch in their season, winless in their past 6 matches, fans are beginning to demand changes. Coach Adrian Heath’s substitution style has been questioned. The referees have been blamed and players are being disrespected. Orlando will look to beat the Montreal Impact this Saturday at Camping World Stadium.
