APRIL 2023

The Month of April is dedicated to the Holy Spirt.

1 CHARITY * UNITY * FRATERNITY * PATRIOTISM
FAITH FAMILY COMMUNITY LIFE
A sellout crowd of nearly 1,000 people crowded into the ballroom at Landerhaven in Mayfield Heights on March 26 for the 39th annual Bishop’s Seminary Brunch. The event raised more than $150,000 to support both the seminarians and the diocesan seminaries.

A SAINT IN THE MAKING

On May 26, 2020, Pope Francis approved a decree recognizing a miracle attributed to the intercession of Father McGivney and opening the way for his beatification. On Oct. 31, the Mass for Beatification was celebrated in the Cathedral of Saint Joseph in Hartford, Conn. An Apostolic Letter was read from Pope Francis that declared Father McGivney would now have the title of Blessed Michael McGivney. He is the third priest born in the United States to be raised to this honor, and the first priest to be beatified who spent his whole priestly ministry in a US parish.

The pope’s Apostolic Letter stated that Blessed Michael McGivney’s “zeal for the proclamation of the

Gospel and generous concern for the needs of his brothers and sisters made him an outstanding witness of Christian solidarity and fraternal assistance.”

The Cause for Canonization for Father McGivney was opened in the Archdiocese of Hartford in 1997, when he was given the title Servant of God. On March 15, 2008, his heroic virtue was recognized by Pope Benedict XVI, and Father McGivney was given the title Venerable Servant of God. This important step occurred after years of careful investigation of Father McGivney’s life, spirituality and holiness by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. The declaration of Venerable confirmed what those who knew him in life, and others who call upon him since his death, have believed about Father McGivney: He lived a life of heroic virtue with an extraordinary love of God and neighbor.

God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Blessed Michael McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue, may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church.

Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify Blessed Michael McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request).

Through Christ our Lord. Amen

Having been raised to the honors of the altar, Blessed Michael McGivney has an annual feast day of Aug. 13, the day between his birthday (in 1852) and the day he passed into eternal life (in 1890). His cause has now entered the final phase toward canonization or sainthood. One more confirmed miracle attributed to the intercession of Blessed Michael McGivney is needed for him to be declared saint.

All Knights and their families, as well as all those devoted to Father McGivney, are asked to pray for his intercession in their daily needs, especially in cases of serious illness, and to report any favors and healings to the Guild.

HIS VISION, YOUR MISSION

You can play a key role in advancing Father McGivney’s cause by joining the Guild for free and praying for his intercession and canonization. May Father McGivney intercede for you!

The Father Michael J. McGivney Guild serves as a source for information about the life, works and spirituality of Father McGivney. The Guild publishes a quarterly newsletter and offers a weekly Mass for the intentions of members.

FAITH FORMATION

The month of April is dedicated to the Holy Spirit. To believe in the Holy Spirit is to profess that the Holy Spirit is one of the persons of the Holy Trinity, consubstantial with the Father and the Son: "with the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified." (Catechism of the Catholic Church)

The Holy Spirit is the Person of Love in the life of God. He is also like a breath, an aspiration of infinite Love, from which we draw the breath of life.

On the day of Pentecost the Divine Spirit communicated such an abundance of life to the whole Church that to symbolize it "there came a sound from heaven, as of a violent wind coming, and it filled the whole house where they (the Apostles) were sitting."

But it is also for us that the Holy Spirit has come, for the group in the Cenacle represented the whole Church. The Holy Spirit came to remain with the Church forever. This is the promise of Jesus Himself. He dwells in the Church permanently and unfailingly, performing in it without ceasing His action of life-giving and sanctification. He establishes the Church infallibly in the truth. It is He Who makes the Church blossom forth with a marvelous supernatural fruitfulness, for He brings to life and full fruition in Virgins, Martyrs, and Confessors those heroic virtues which are one of the marks of true sanctity.

(The Mysteries of the Rosary, Dom Columba Marmion, O.S.B.)

The Holy Spirit and Our Spiritual Life

Everything depends on the Holy Spirit's operation in us. The more fully we allow ourselves to be drawn and guided by the Holy Spirit, the closer we shall come to Jesus and His mysteries and graces. The Holy Spirit must draw us to every good thought, word and deed. Every act of faith, of hope and of love for God requires the inspiration and help of the Holy Spirit. If our virtues and our deeds are to be truly perfect and worthy of God, they need the special and continual touch of the Holy Spirit. Even though we are endowed with all the supernatural virtues, we still remain mere apprentices in the spiritual life. We know what we must do; and yet lack the virtue and the faculty to perform these things with ease. The Holy Spirit must guide us. He must seize our intellect and our wills and guide us in prayer, in work, in the decisions we have to make, and in the difficulties we encounter every day. He must share with us His manner of seeing, of loving, of thinking, and of working.

Our works and our conduct will be perfect only when the Holy Spirit has taken complete possession of us. Therefore, in addition to the supernatural virtues of faith, hope, charity, justice, fortitude, temperance and wisdom, He gives us also His seven gifts. Thus He equips the tiny boat of our soul with sails upon which He Himself, the Spirit of God, blows. Our progress across the sea of life is then no longer slow and painful. We are propelled and guided by the Spirit. If the Spirit of God breathes upon the sails of our boat, then our journey will be a happy one. Then through the work and the help of the Holy Spirit, who lives in our soul, we shall come to the Father.

Excerpted from the The Light of the World by Benedict Baur, O.S.B.

Prayer to the Holy Spirit

Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy.

Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy.

Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit, that I love but what is holy.

Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy.

Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit, that I always may be holy.

Amen. (St. Augustine)

FAITH CORNER WITH TONY!

Our Lenten journey has come to a close as we roll into holy week and the most spiritual time of the year. Say a prayer for our priest’s as they have a busy week preparing us for the crucifixion and the resurrection of our Lord and savior. Happy Easter Brother Knights.

Your friend in Christ, Tony Offenberger Faith Director

STATE OFFICER REPORT

For those of you that are into the NCAA Basketball Tournament, what were your thoughts just a couple of weeks ago when the tournament opened? Full of optimism, anticipating winning the office pool? Maybe, this was your year to pick the perfect bracket? You did your homework, got your PhD in Bracketology and sat down ready for some exciting basketball. Then….they actually played the games. The outcome I am sure is not what you expected. Who would have thought San Diego State and UConn would be in the Championship game? Sometimes, things just do not go as planned? So does the life of our councils.

March certainly lived up to all of the madness on and off the court. We started the month off hosting a very competitive diocesan free throw at St. Hilary in Fairlawn with those winners getting the opportunity to represent Cleveland at the State Finals. Well, we had some great shooters, but unfortunately, we were shut out this year at State. I am sure we will be back next year ready for all competitors. The last thing I told the participants before the start of the State Finals was to have fun. I certainly hope they did.

Thank you to all of the councils and members that attended the 39th Annual Bishop’s Brunch at Landerhaven. For me, having the pleasure of working on the committee for the past four years has been a great experience. Talking with a lot of the members, clergy, and community

citizens at the brunch, they know and appreciate all of the hard work that YOU and YOUR councils do day-inand-day-out in your parishes and communities. It makes me so proud to hear that our councils are out there putting their faith into action.

Then, there was the Cavs Knight against the Houston Rockets. The game was great and having about 100+ free throw participants, families, and the state officers there made it special. There were some hiccups along the way but we made it through. Something is there, I hope, to build upon to give our youth something different then just a trophy or medal.

The Charity Brothers Need YOU to keep selling those Super Cash Bonanza tickets. The first turn-in is NOW! This is where you can maximize your rebates. The second turn-in is May 12th.

The 124th Annual Ohio State Convention is fast approaching. Have you elected your delegates and alternates? This is an election year. Please make sure you register for the convention by visiting the state website AND registering for hotel. New place this year in a new facility. Come and see.

For Cleveland, we will be hosting a Meet the Candidate Night on Friday, May 10, 2023 at 7:30PM as part of the Chapter Meeting. This is open to ALL councils and members that would like to talk to the candidates for State Warden. Please plan to attend whether face-to-face or virtually.

Council elections are coming up soon. Hopefully, your trustees are working on a slate of officers. COVID certain hampered officers stepping up into leadership roles. Being a council officers can be a very challenging position. Personally, I thought it was one of the most rewarding. Being able to be on the ground level, working to promote charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism to our members, families, parishes, and communities. If you are GK that is retiring and you are looking for more, there are opportunities throughout the diocese where you can help as a District Deputy. Next to being GK, being a DD is a great experience and you get to meet so many more members and councils that you may never have had a chance to previously. If you are interested in learning more, call, text, or email me. We can have a cup of coffee and talk about your future as a leader in the Knights of Columbus in the diocese.

Finally, I would be remised if I did not mention growth in the Order. You can see Cleveland is still in second place. I am so proud of the recruitment and Exemplifications taking place. Keep up the great work, my brothers and I hope to see you all at Convention.

Vivat Jesus, Jim

STATE GROWTH REPORT

MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM AWARD POINTS **IMPORTANT**

There are about 26 different Councils from throughout the State that have submitted Membership Programs and are seeking Points. Those 26+ need to go back in the program that has been REVIEWED and not awarded, and send back the information requested, and I will reward Your Council with Points. I WANT EVERY COUNCIL TO MAX OUT IN MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM Points. I will give the points, but please supply the information requested by me and resubmit the report AGAIN. I check the website Membership Program every 2 days. I WANT TO GIVE YOU POINTS, just submit the pertinent information.

It is looking like March will be a very good recruiting Month for Ohio. Many Councils held your Mandatory MEMBERSHIP MARCH BLITZ Drive.

The numbers coming in are looking good. Two New Hispanic Councils are in the works as we Speak. One in New Carlisle, Oh (Arch) and the other in Columbus. Both have enough Men that signed up to start a Council. We are waiting after Holy Week for them to take their Hispanic Exemplifications, then we are a GO!!!

Continue to recruit, not just in March, but EVERY MONTH, EVERY DAY!!

Don’t stop recruiting New Members. Remember, the more men we recruit into the Knights, the Stronger the Church will be., for they will be better Husbands, Fathers, and better Catholics.

Important things to remember for Membership in Fraternal year 2021-2022

Just about every month throughout the Fraternal year, there will be some great $$ Incentives for the Proposer who brings in New Members. Usually it is $35 for each new member. However that

will change in the coming months. Keep watching for the changes.

In order to claim the monthly Incentive, the Proposer needs to email to me

mcfreil2019@gmail.com The name and Membership number of the New Member & the proposers home address, so that I can get the check mailed to you. Each month is different. Sometimes we limit it to the First 10 Proposers who sign up a new member, so keep checking the monthly flyer.

IF YOU DO NOT ASK MEN TO JOIN, THEY WILL NOT.

Ask men of your Parishes to JOIN US. Have them go to kofc.org, click on the JOIN US gold banner and have them fill out the brief form. Good Luck, I am hoping that every Council in OHIO becomes STAR Council.

Vivat Jesus ! Michael Freil State Membership Director

EMEMBERSHIP

Happy Easter, Brothers. As we move to the last quarter of the fraternal year and eyes begin to focus on accomplishing membership goals, do not forget the emembers sitting in your candidate tab. The state got credit when they joined as an e-member but it’s time for your diocese and your council to get credit toward completing your membership goal and achieving Star Council.

As you transfer those e-members, I’d like to offer some helpful reminders. Though we all prefer live degrees, the outstanding e-members can be brought in through Wednesday night Ohio virtual degree or degree on demand from Supreme. Truth be told, we all get more out of the degree the second time so get them in via virtual degree but take them to a live degree when it’s offered. The biggest thing is to get them transferred and active in your council. Second, e-members can be transferred by sending a form 100 in to

COUNCIL PROCESS

form100@kofcohio.org but it will take 5-25 days. You can move them instantly using the candidate tab. Your FS or GK can add e-members back to your candidate tab by using the search feature. You’ll need member number, name, and birthdate. After you add them through the candidate tab, be sure they get full credit for the degree by going into member management and adding their second and third degree dates.

E-membership is strong in Ohio thanks to your council. Ohio’s conversion rate it 63% which is better than most of the order. That is wholly due to your efforts. Thank you for recruiting hard and utilizing emembership to get those men in your council and active. Cleveland Rocks! (I loved that show).

• Council Admission Committee contacts the e-member and welcomes him to the Order.

• Interview the eMember utilizing the Admission Committee Inquiries Guide (Form 390)

• Complete Admission Committee Report (Form 283).

• Council Admission Committee recommendation to council officers.

IF FOUND FAVORABLE

• Council ballots (live or virtually) to accept eMember.

Please note that now any forms that have not been submitted that include the Council Officers (185), Service Program Personnel (365), Semi-Annual Audits from Aug and Feb (1295) and the Fraternal Survey (1728) are now PAST DUE. The list on the next page shows the councils and what reports Supreme is still missing. Supreme is behind in getting the forms updated again. If you submitted those reports AND have a confirmation message from Supreme (if submitted via email), PLEASE DO NOT SEND AGAIN.

Finally, if you are interested in getting your Columbian Award Application (Form SP-7) automatically populated for you, please contact Jim Maslach. This will only pertain to those councils that have submitted Council Activities and Programs through the Form 10784.

If you need help with any of these reports, please contact your District Deputy, State Officer or anyone on the Diocesan Staff.

EUCHARISTIC REVIVAL

Why do we need a Eucharistic Revival?

Over the past couple of years, our diocese has participated in two major initiatives, the Disciple Maker Index (DMI) Survey and the Synod on Synodality. These initiatives have invited all Catholics to participate and share their thoughts about their experiences of Church. The feedback that we have received from nearly 40,000 people supports the need for a Eucharistic Revival in our diocese.

According to the DMI survey, the majority of respondents (87% / 86%) believe in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, attend Mass and participate in individual prayer time on a weekly or daily basis. Half are also involved in practicing Catholic devotions at least once a month (e.g. rosary, novenas, feast days, etc.) More than half of respondents, however, did not feel prepared to have conversations about their personal faith story, church teachings or the story of Jesus with family and friends. Another significant finding was that 75% of respondents stated they have never participated in a retreat.

In addition, one of the top ten priorities from the diocesan synodal process was participation in the Liturgy. Some of the emerging actions identified, include:

• increasing adult faith formation opportunities, especially formation on the Liturgy and liturgical practices

• equipping missionary disciples to spread the Good News and be witnesses of God's love

• rebuilding a sense of community in our parishes post-pandemic

• reaching out to those who have distanced themselves or no longer feel included in the Church

• strengthening spiritual life through Adoration, devotions, and retreat experiences

These findings show there is fertile ground for the Eucharistic Revival in our diocese.

Please share the good news of your Council’s activity with the Diocesan Eucharistic Revival Team. You may email me at Gregory Coogan, gcoogan@dioceseofcleveland.org.

DECLINE TO SIGN School Nurse Implications

Ohio is now the next target of the abortion industry. They have a petition to put a change to Ohio’s Constitution on the ballot. It is presented as a bill to protect a woman’s reproductive health. Reading the bill tells a totally different story. Many of the articles in the bill are repugnant. Here’s one.

If you are asked to sign the petition to put this bill on the ballot in November, please be kind to the worker, but decline. The bill may be the work of the devil but the person asking for signatures probably does not know all of what the bill contains.

When you politely decline to sign, ask the person if they know that the bill would allow a child to go to the school nurse and ask for an aspirin and a sex change. The aspirin would be denied as the nurse needs parental permission to give it out, but the nurse could assist the child in finding a clinic to do the sex change and the nurse would not be allowed to tell the child’s parents. There is no age minimum for sex change requests.

This is just one piece of the proposed bill. More information will be provided later.

Solon Parent Tearfully Addresses Board of Education on Bus Safety Concerns

A School Bus Safety Alliance Team consisting of Kate Kutnick, Solon resident and Rudy Breglia advocated for seat belts in school buses before the Solon Board*. Kate mentions while choking back tears that her focus on school bus safety increased when her daughter was in a minor school bus accident on her first day of her 1st grade. In her address she mentioned some recent examples of Ohio school bus accidents where students were hospitalized. She also indicated that the Board needs to be “responsible stewards of our children’s safety” and should require that seat belts be installed in new school buses. Kate emphasized the recent “Position Statement” by the 50,000 member Ohio PTA** that

supports having seat belts in school buses and encourages school districts to conduct seat belt installation pilot programs.

I followed Kate’s talk with summary statements similar to those given to the Solon Board back on January 28, 2019 on the importance of having seat belts in school buses to protect children. Also mentioned were the routine nature of children being injured and killed in school bus accidents; the inadequacy of current school bus safety features; the low cost of adding seat belts at <0.5% of total cost of student transportation; the routine complete failure (rollovers) of the primary school bus safety feature (NTSB); the ~1200 Ohio school bus accidents each year; the many governmental (NTSB) and safety organization recommendations (National Safety Council) and

requirements (18% US States & Beachwood) for seat belts in school buses; school districts facing the increased risk of litigation with unlimited compensatory damage awards from student injuries in bus accidents; the substantial evidence for seat belts being considered a “Standard of Care”; the recent activity of Ohio school districts purchasing buses with seat belts and Ohio city councils sending Resolutions to their associated school districts. Furthermore, the goals of the Alliance were mentioned and a guarantee of providing funds for adding seat belts to the 1st Solon Pilot Program bus was made. A meeting of the Alliance team is expected soon for discussions with the Solon Superintendent, Fred Bolden.
