1. INTRODUCTION In this project we are going to talk about “Las Meninas” by Diego Velazquez and The Meninas of Canido. The Meninas of Canido are a beautiful example of street art.
2. DIEGO VELAZQUEZ Spanish painter Diego Velázquez was born circa June 6, 1599, in Seville, Spain. Although his early paintings were religiousthemed, he became renowned for his realistic, complex portraits as a member of King Philip IV's court. In his later years, the Spanish master produced a renowned portrait of Pope Innocent X and the famed "Las Meninas." He died on August 6, 1660, in Madrid.
3. LAS MENINAS Velazquez’s Las Meninas is a 1656 painting, in the Museo del Prado in Madrid. Las Meninas (Spanish for the Maids of Honor) is a portrait of Infanta Margarita, the daughter of King Philip IV, and his second wife Mariana of Austria. The painting's complex and enigmatic composition is an excellent example of how great works of art are made. Infanta Margarita has dropped in to see Velazquez at work. She stops right next to him, at the center of the foreground of the painting, but she seems perplexed. Velazquez spotted Infanta Margarita’s psychological perplexity in front of the large window of his studio and analyzed her behavior.
4. EDITORIAL a. Nerea´s Opinion “The perfect Menina and dancer” I think this project helped Canido, specially in the commercial sector. In addition , the people in general are very happy thanks to The Meninas´ colouring and the new neighbours. I believe it´s a noble act to create this project and even still for the motives Eduardo Hermida organized all of this. The visit to “Las Meninas de Canido” was awesome. I learnt a lot of things about the history of Las Meninas, Canido, Velázquez and “Las Meninas de Canido.” By: Nerea R.
I chose this Menina because she is dancing and I love doing that. In addition, is represents our culture and that is the reason why I like more this artwork. Of course, I love this artwork because it´s very nice. b. Maite´s opinion: “The Menina of galaxies” I think that the idea of the Meninas is very good because it gives life to Canido streets. I also think that painting old streets in a small neighbourhood to attract to the tourists who visit the town is a beautiful idea. This Menina is my favourite. It is a character whose name is Darth Vader from the film “ Stars Wars “. The Menina has got a black mask with big eyes, a sword and a black dress with white stripes. By: Maite S. c. Pablo´s opinion
I think that the idea of the Meninas is good because it attracts tourists from over the world. Canido is a beautiful place to visit the Meninas because there is enough space to paint
them. This
initiative
saved the
neighbourhood and people can enjoy watching the painting. This menina is my favourite. It is beautiful, striking and colorful. It is the Menina footballer.
5. NEWS ARTICLE Las Meninas de Canido is a project created by Eduardo Hermida. In this project Eduardo painted a representation of “Las Meninas” by Velazquez. He wanted to give life and colour to the streets. This project started in 2008. Initially Eduardo Hermida painted with his daughter, but later, some Eduardo Hermida´s friends helped him too. There are 250 “Meninas” in Canido. To each Menina, they need 1 or 2 days. Eduardo Hermida had some problem with some of his neighbours, but the majority liked this initiative. In addition, a lot of schools go to visit The Meninas of Canido. There are special places where the children can paint too. When Eduardo Hermida was a child he loved painting. Every years, Eduardo Hermida organizes an event to publicise “Las Meninas de Canido”. There the people eat different foods and enjoy themselves. Now, other countries want to do the same, even Madrid.
6. CONCLUSION
We think this project is very good because we learned a lot of things about Diego Velazquez, Las Meninas and Las Meninas De Canido. In addition, we learned to do projects. We also think this project helped us to negotiate and work in groups. Working in groups is very important for life in general, because we learn to respect other opinions too.
