1. Introduction This project is about ‘’Las meninas de Canido’’ an idea by Eduardo Hermida that got up in 2008 to make the neighbourhood of Canido alive again and to be a

better place to live and remember how beautiful Canido can be. Every year,

many painters from many countries come to Ferrol (Spain) to help Eduardo Hermida with his work.

2. Diego Velázquez Diego Velazquez was born in 1599 in a noble Sevillian family in Spain. He was a spanish painter, known for his portraits, mainly “Las Meninas”. Althought his early paintings were religious-themed, he became renowned for his realistic, complex portraits as a member of King Philip IV’s court. He was apprentice of Francisco Pacheco, for six years. Then, he abandoned Pacheco’s style, and painted directly from life and was influenced by Caravaggio’s style. Diego Velazquez died on August 6, 1660, in Madrid.

3. “Las Meninas” by Velázquez

"Las Meninas" painting was finished in 1656. It is one of the most famous works by Velázquez. The Infanta Margarita, appears assisted by two bridesmaids or "Meninas" in the center of the picture. Two members of the court are on the right.

4. News article

“Painting “Meninas” to become Canido great again” Eduardo Hermida, with his “Meninas de Canido” project, wants Canido to become great again, by painting Meninas in the abandoned houses. L IDIA , N ATHALY, D ANILO, AR OA, S ABELA & N EREA. GALICIA.

In 2008,Eduardo Hermida started the “Meninas de Canido” project. It’s about painting Meninas in abandoned houses in Canido. More than 60 national and international painters come to Canido each year to paint their own Menina. Before this initiative came up, Canido was wrecking and less people went there, to visit or to live. Now, with this project, each year more people come to see the Meninas, and to live to this neighbourhood. To Eduardo Hermida, “Meninas” picture is “ A wonderful picture, that can bring life to Canido ”, also, he talks about Velázquez as an example painter for Spanish art, and the best Spanish portraitist” . The students told us “we all know that next September, we have another date with Eduardo Hermida and “Meninas de Canido” project.”

5. Editorials 5a. “Darth Vader” by Lidia

My opinion is that this project is very interesting because we can learn new things about Canido and how the young people returned to the town. I think that this is a great idea because thanks to “Las Meninas de Canido” the young people returned to Canido and they built new homes and so Canido recover ed its importance. This is my favourite Menina because it is different from the others and Star Wars is a movie that I love.

5b. “Modern Meninas” by Nathaly I liked to go to Canido to see the Meninas. I also liked to meet Eduardo Hermida, I liked it all, but my favorite Menina is this because it mixes technology with the Meninas that are from another period.

5c. “Meninas and love around Canido” by Danilo I think that the “ Meninas de Canido “ project is very interesting because Eduardo Hermida’s intention is to paint the abandoned houses to make the neighborhood more beautiful. If I could, I would help in this project because I would love to bring happiness into a neighborhood and see people happier. This is my favorite menina:

This is my favorite Menina because I love the perfection she was painted with and its details. I also love the message that is in its chest: “Tu amor te salvará”, for me, it is a wonderful phrase together with the detail of its heart bleeding.

5d. “Robot invasion” by Aroa The initiative of painting "Meninas" all over Canido seems very nice. Because Eduardo Hermida wanted to do it because it looked like Canido was gradually disappearing. And thanks to this initiative Canido has more population than before. My favourite “Menina” is this, because it has to do with today and because I think it’s very beautiful.

5e. “Paint Meninas to decore the world” by Sabela Seco I think this project by Eduardo Hermida helped Canido to become great again by a beautiful initiative. By painting Meninas in abandoned houses, creating a better environment in the neighborhood, and many people go there, to live, or to see the art works. It’s like a museum in the streets, that helps Canido to be a better place. My favourite Menina is Antonieta’s, that uses all the natural spaces that the place has, to create the Menina’s figure. Also, being so original, she uses the leaves to make the Menina’s hair. It is so beautiful to me, and so original too.

5f. “Canido, a museum in the streets” by Nerea Veiga I liked to know Canido neighborhood and the initiative by Eduardo Hermida. I was surprised that even the street furniture look like the Meninas. I like all Meninas but especially this one: I like this Menina because I love cakes, and it makes me look at it.

6. Conclusion We think this project was very good to help us to know more vocabulary, more information about Canido and we learned how to work in groups, that can be difficult but it is more funny.

5a. Lidia My conclusion is that I have been in this group for a little time, but I think that there are good classmattes and it is fun to work with them. 5b. Nathaly I really liked to do this project, because I could learn more about “Las Meninas” and Diego Velázquez. Also, I liked how we worked together and how we organized us. 5c. Danilo I think it was funny to make this project in group, because it is easier and we learn more vocabulary. 5d. Aroa I liked the idea of working in groups to do the project, it is very funny to work with friends. 5e. Sabela I liked to do this group work because it is easier than working alone and it is funny to learn with your friends. Also, I think it was great to know more thing about Canido, a place that we have near, but we don’t really knew about it. 5d. Nerea I like working in group, because it’s easier and more funny and while we do the project, we learn. I like my group because we all get along well together.
