1. Weegee’s biography
Arthur Fellig was born on June 12th 1899. And he died on December 26th 1968. He was a photojournalist and he is known for his stark black and white street photograph. He worked in New York city and Manhattan.
2. Miriam´s interpretation In this picture I can see a lot of children who are cooling themselves off with water from a hydrant. The children look very happy. They are in a street because I can see the pavements and some buildings around (the children) / them. I think that the children are hot because they are in summer and they decide to cool off themselves The subject of this picture are the children cooling themselves off. The background is the building which is behind the children and the foreground is the photographer. I think that it is summer and these children have just completed the course and they are very hot so they decide to cool themselves and celebrate that they are on holidays. Then, they´ll come home and their parents will tell them of I think that this picture was taken in the 20th century maybe in Germany. Because of the clothes and the street I think that it is more germany than british. I think that the photographer thought that it would be a very funny photo because all the children are happy and maybe in that decade it isn´t very usual. 3 Javi´s interpretation In this picture I see children playing with water from a fire hydrant in front of a building which seems a bank or a museum. Most of the children are happy but two boys and one girl in the middle of the image seem to be cold but also happy. I think that the subject of the photo is children’s happiness because it is the feeling we can see in those children’s eyes I think that this picture was taken sixty or seventy years ago in summer, maybe in in august or july because some boys are only wearing underpants. In the background I see a hairdressing, a store and everything is in a road, probably in USA, UK or Germany. In the foreground I see a girl and a boy running and the water on the road. -2-
4.Character, clothes, pose and expression The boys are wearing trousers and the girls dresses. They are all standing. They are very happy and motivated. All of them are laugthing and look very well. We think that all of them are thinking: Summer is great! The school is finished, now we can sleep however we want. The photo suggests, because of their expressions and the way children are moving that they are really enjoying that moment.
5. Technical knowledge a) Point of view When the photographer took the photo he was standing in front of the children. He took the photo very close. We think that the photographer chooses to compose the picture this way because he is trying to show us how the children are enjoying themselves. b) Lightning The quality of the light is good and probably it is natural. In this photo the light comes from the sun. The lightning is dark, hard and contrasty too. It draws our attention to the children enjoying themselves. The photograph is clear. c) Framing In this picture the frame includes the children and the fire hydrant. In the background there are a hairdresser and a shop . We think that the photographer chooses to frame the picture this way because he wants to show children as the most important element in the photo. d) Cropping The photographer crops the photo because he wants to demostrate that there are a lot of children in this place. e) Intended use of the photograph We think that this photograph was taken for a newspaper because Weegee was a photojournalist. When he took that photo there was no smartphones or consoles and children have fun playing in the street. -3-
f) Finding meaning Our feeling when we saw the photo was friendliness because of their expressions. It make us think of that in that time period, the children have fun only with their friends and with their imagination. g) Metaphor We think that the metaphor of this photograph is that when you are a child, it doesn´t matter the problems that you can have, because children always find the way to have fun.
