1.Introduction We think our teacher chose this project because, we can learn how to analyze and read photographs and also to find a meaning to them. We are going to analyze this photo because we think it has an important meaning and it transmits us very strong feelings.
2.Analysis of the photograph a. Observation Skills i.
The story behind this photo In this photo we see a father that is giving to another person his baby to save him. They are escaping from something.
ii.
Context It is placed in a fence.
Nerea and Sabela think it is from the nazi Holocaust because we think the father is jewish and is living in a concentration camp. Quite the opposite, Patricia and Daniel think they are escaping too, but from a war, maybe the last syrian one.
iii.
Characters The characters are a father, his baby and the person who takes the baby. The father is wrapped up in a jacket, but the baby and the other person are wearing a short sleeved t-shirt.
The father is bended and we don’t see the other person’s pose. The baby is in the hands of both people. The father is worried, and it seems as if he is telling something to the other person.
b. Technical Knowledge i.
Photographer’s point of view We think the photographer was crouching next to the other person when he took the photo to see better the expressions.
ii.
Lightning The lightning is natural, it comes from the sky, from in front of the photographer. The photo is in black and white, and we think it is to make the photo sadder.
iii.
Framing and cropping The photograph focuses on both, the father and his son. The rest of the photo is blurred. The cropping cuts the other person, so we can’t see him/her completely. The baby is in the middle and the fence is above the baby.
c. The real story of the photo “I camped with the refugees for five days on the border. A group of about 200 people arrived, and they moved under the trees along the fence line.” Said Richardson to World Press. The photo was taken in the border between Serbia and Hungary,
he explained that the refugees had to cross the fence at night, escaping from the police. When the police went next to where they were, they fixed the fence, but the syrian engineers opened it again to escape. A few days after the police came yelling “do not come illegally into Hungary, go away, we do not want you here, if we catch you, you will be arrested.” They sprayed pepper into refugees, to prevent them from trespassing the border.
3.Warren Richardson’s biography Warren Richardson was born in Australia in 1968. He is a self-taught photographer. He works on humanist or environmental projects but also, he works for magazines, newspapers and companies. During a period, he worked on celebrity photography in the UK and US.
For his works he won the 2015 World Press Photo of the Year.
4.Conclusion We think this is the best photo in the world, because it represents an actual problem and it expresses very strong feelings. Also, the photo makes easy the understanding of the problem, because you can put yourself in their shoes.
Also, our feeling for this photograph is supported by the prize this photo won, “photo of the year.
