Introduction In this project we are going to talk about an image to learn to read images, to tell what we think it could mean, what the author wants to express and to write a conclusion about it.

OBSERVATION SKILLS In this image we see a couple in a rickshaw and a young boy pulling it, the couple is taking a selfie and the young boy is carrying them. We think that the subject is the couple, in the background there is nothing, and in the foreground the ‘’camera’’. Irene’s story I think that the couple went on holidays to South America and to visit the city where they hired the rickshaw. Afterwards I think that the child will continue with his job and the couple will pay to him and return to the hotel. Raquel’s story The couple went to South America for a vacation, and they contracted the rickshaw for a ride. Afterwards I think that the couple will come back to the hotel. Christelle’s story The couple bought the boy to transport them. Ainara’s story I think that before, the couple was walking on the street when they saw a rickshaw and they decided to go in one. I think that next, the couple will go to eat something, or to see a movie.

We think that the picture was taken in South America in 2003, because of the clothes and the type of phone. We think too that this image isn’t real and it tries to express the child exploitation that many little boys suffer to help their parents or to maintain themselves.

CHARACTERS We think that the woman and the man are 43 years old and they are from North America, and the kid is 6 years old and he is from the country that they are visiting. The man is wearing a polo shirt and a crop trousers, the woman is wearing a blouse and the kid is wearing a tshirt, a pair of trousers and a cap. This tells us that they are tourists and the kid is poor because he has no shoes. In this image the couple is sitting and relaxed while the kid is standing, sad and tired. The man and the woman are enjoying the moment and smiling, the kid is thinking why he has to do that and why he can’t be playing like the other kids. He wants to finish the work. We know that for their faces and expressions. The photographer only put colour in the couple to stand out them. He was standing and by the subject’s side.

LIGHTING We think that the light of this image is artificial, because this isn’t a real photo, the light came from in front of the kid because of the shadows. The light is dark around the kid and bright around the couple, it’s soft and diffused. The couple is focused to draw the attention and it’s clear. The light tries that we don’t look at the kid, he looks sad and tired, and they look happy and having fun. This is for the effect of the light, the colours and the shadows.

METAPHORS We think that this image represents the child exploitation, to show the world this real problem, and that we can’t let this happens because no one child must be working, they must be learning at school. It makes us feel sad and it makes us think about the kid sadness he is suffering from that. The principal symbols are the couple's clothes that look expensive, the kid’s clothes that look old and cheap and his way of looking at them.

AUTHOR The author of this image is Banksy, we have little information about him, his identity is unknown. He was born in 1974 in Bristol (England). He is a graffiti artist. In his artworks he uses dark humor and satirical pieces about politicians, pop culture, morality and ethnic groups. Children, police, monkeys, rats and members of the royal family appear in his artworks They are in many countries all over the world, but specially in London. Some of his artworks are: “ Smile”, “Liberty’s statue?, Follow your dreams (CANCELLED), The Wall... For example ‘’The Wall’’ is made / drawn in the wall that divides Palestine and Israel to make that wall disappear. Our image is called Rickshaw. Banksy painted the fat couple to represent that they have money, properties… The couple has no sympathy for what the boy represents (poverty). He knows that his audience is appalled but they will not do nothing, he sees this like a problem of our society.

CONCLUSION At the end of the project we learned to read images better, to search for information about the author and it helps us to take a good photo with the techniques that we learned like the lighting. We learned too to put in common all the ideas about the image. We think that this project was very interesting because we worked with photos for the first time and it helped us to be more creative. The most difficult part

of the project was to put all the opinions in common, and the easiest part was to analyze the image. Raquel’s conclusion My opinion about this project is that I would work better with other people, it was difficult to organize us, but it was interesting too. Irene’s conclusion: My opinion about this project is that I learned how to put in common my opinion with the other members of the group, but I think that I would work better. Christelle’s conclusion: My opinion is that this project is very creative and interesting, but very long because we had to analyze many things. Ainara’s conclusion: My opinion about this project is that I learned to be more creative and to express what I see in a photography to put in common with the other members of the group.
