INTRODUCTION In this project we are going to talk about a photo. We are going to show all behind it and demonstrate that behind the photo there are a lot of technical elements ( light, frame, cropping‌) and a lot of things if we look more carefully. This is the best photo and we are going to tell the reasons why. We hope that you like it.

BIOGRAPHY: ROBERT DOISNEAU

He was born in 1912 in Paris. Nobody taught him about photography. He worked for Renault in 1934-1939. In 1939, he decided to work in an independent way and he worked as a photojournalist. In the Second World War, he had to leave his dream and fight with the French resistance. In 1949, he started to work with Vogue and he became famous. He died in 1994.

ANALYSIS OF THE PHOTO Observation Skills: In this photo we can see a street, in this street there are different people walking and we can see some cars on the road. The important thing in the photo is the couple in the middle of the street kissing each other. We think they are kissing each other because the boy is going to take a plane or a boat to go to a war and he is saying goodbye to his girlfriend with a kiss. In the background we can see different cars ( a type of car from the 40’s) and we can also see some buildings. In the foreground we can see the couple and other people an a lamppost too. We guess that before the photo was taken the boy was running to say goodbye to the girl, and while the boy was running she was walking in the street. We think that after the photo was taken the boy was going to take a plane or a boat to go to the war and fight in it. The photo was taken in the street, in the 40’s or the 50’s. We say that because of the cars in the background, the clothes and the people’s hairstyle.

We think the story behind the photo is that the boy had to fight in a war. We think this because the kiss is very romantic and we think the kiss is a “goodbye kiss”. The real history: At the beginning, the people thought that the photo was spontaneous. But, in 1990 it was discovered that it was made by actors, because the actors reclaimed the prominence of the photo.

For us, the photographer was thinking about the love and suddenly he saw the couple, so he took the photo. We think that the girl in the picture is about 20 years old and the boy is 24. They are from the 50’s, but we can’t say where they are from. The girl is wearing a skirt, a shirt and a jacket. The boy is wearing a suit and he is carrying

a

briefcase. They are standing in the middle of the street. They are worried, because probably they won’t see each other again. They are thinking about their relationship. Nothing in the photo suggest

us what they are

thinking and if they are really a couple.

Technical Knowledge: For us, the photographer is a man, because in that period women only did the housework. The photographer's point of view is from the right of the couple and he is in a medium distance, because we can see all the body. He is standing, because it is a general shot. He decides to choose this composition, because he wants to focus the people’s attention in the cwouple. It is natural light and comes from the Northeast. The light is hard and contrasty, because the people are wearing dark clothes and the background is light. The couple is

focused but the background is blurry,

to draw your attention in the couple. The mood created by the light is lugubrious and sad.

In the frame there is a couple, some people and some cars. We think that outside of the

frame there is a street ( the street that is on the setting continues out of the frame), more buildings, shops and people. The photographer chooses this frame to put the couple in the middle of the photo, to focus them. The effect of the cropping is to draw the attention in the most important elements and eliminate the less important things. It affects our perception because you only see a little part of the scene and not it all, so you can’t see what is happening in the rest of the photo.

We think the photographer uses this photo for an art exhibition about the 40’s or 50’s. The photographer takes this picture to capture a romantic moment. We think that it was taken

during

the

Second

World

War,

because the people are wearing typical clothes of this period. It communicates us that in that war time there was love ( even in war time). We don’t know about other photographers that worked in this time period. The photograph says that love is very important in the world, because people is happier with love and they don’t think in bad things. The first time we saw the photo, we felt romantic emotions and affection. It made us think of romantic movies, romantic moments and in love in general. We think that the photo isn’t creative and is very simple, so it doesn’t inspire us. We think that the metaphor of the photo is that love doesn’t understand distance and time. The symbol of the photo is the kiss of the couple.

CONCLUSION With this project, we learned a lot of things about photography and now, we can analyse a photo (and this is something very important, for example when we see photos in the social medias). For us, the best part was to invent the story and the worst was the framing and the cropping.

We think that it is the best photo, because we can see a scene of a period that we didn’t live in and we can learn about that period. It represents too important values, like love in bad times.
