1. Introduction This project is about photography, we think that our teacher chose this work so that we can learn new ways of understand photos. We chose this photo because we think it conveys many ideas. We can imagine many stories and with this image we can talk about what factories were like in the past.

2.Analysis of the photography a) Observation skills: i. Action: In the foreground there is a man, the man is serious. Behind him we see more workers, they are making cigars. In the middle we see a man, he is reading a newspaper. On the wall on the left there is a hanger with hats and jackets. The room is very big. 3

ii. Topic: We think the photo theme is how the factories

were in the past, the way they worked, without Machines. (Traditionally)

iii. Characters: ■ All they have a long moustache and almost all the men have a hat. Almost all of them are wearing white shirts, and two of them black shirts. The man in the middle is wearing a black suit. He is the most elegant. We think that the photographer is a factory worker because we see an unoccupied place.

b) Technical Knowledge i. Photographer’s point of view The photographer was standing and he took the photo in the middle of the room. He was in front of the workers. 4

ii. Lightning The photo is in black and white. The light is artificial, because there is a lamp in the background, that it’s hanging over the ceiling. And also the light is natural because it comes through the widow. The photo expresses the work in common of the workers.

iii. Framing and Cropping We think that the photo is cropped and framed this way for several reasons. One of them is for you to look at the man that is sitting on the table with the newspaper.

3.The real history

We couldn't find the necessary information to explain the history of this photo but formerly the factories used readers. Cuban cigar factories have a tradition of employing readers, that sit at the front of the factory room, reading the newspaper to entertain the workers. The repetition of the job makes it easy to concentrate and, also, alleviates boredom with the original task. Patxi, our Spanish language teacher, explained it to us. 5

4. Conclusion With this project we learned how to work in English in a different way. We liked it but we think that it was a little difficult. It transmits us a new form of working that in the present is lost. We chose this photo because we find it interesting to know how the work was in the past. 6
