1.Introduction This is an English and History interdisciplinary project. This project is divided in two parts , one individual and the other one in groups. In the individual project we chose a Menina, analysed it and compared it with “Las Meninas” by Velázquez. In the group work we wrote both an introduction and a conclusion, together with two articles, one of opinions and one of facts. The reasons why we work as journalists are to learn how to analyse the parts of a newspaper, fake news, recognise and differentiate facts and opinions and write an article. In the second term we went to Canido to interview Eduardo Hermida, we analysed some paintings and knew their stories. In the excursion, our History Teacher explained us the story of ”Las Meninas” by Velázquez. This is about “Las Meninas de Canido” by Eduardo Hermida. Canido is a district of Ferrol. In the past, the status of Canido was damaged and this man, Eduardo Hermida, started this project because the suburb needed a renovation.

2. Biography of Velazquez Diego Velazquez(1599-1660) was a spanish painter in the golden age of Spain. He works for the court of king Felipe IV and it was of the contemporary baroque period. Diego has have a lot of paintings, and one of the most popular is “Las Meninas”, the focus of the project.

3.Future article

The changes of Canido A revolutionary form of art By Pablo Palacios This street art initiative caused a revolution in Canido: both the economy and the population grew up. This initiative started because Canido was in ruins and Eduardo Hermida painted the suburb to renovate i t. Eduardo was the first who painted the suburb walls then asked some of his friends for help to continue with this initiative along the years. Las Meninas de Canido are an interpretation according to the Meninas by Velázquez from the point of view of the artist who paints the walls of the district, it started in 2009. Nowadays it is the most expensive suburb of Ferrol. There lives the rich people and a house that in the past cost €60,000 today, for example, costs €120,000.

4.Editorial

Fantastic renovation Canido takes a bath in glory By Pablo Palacios

The Meninas of Canido was a very good option to renovate this ancient and ugly district, but this was cast into oblivion

because nowadays is the best district of Ferrol. Eduardo Hermida is a very good painter and the initiative shows his real love for art. We think this is a good initiative and he is is very brave to confront this, because some people are against it, for example the man who covered one of the p aintings. The neighbors take advantage and increase the price of the plots for the same house, it isn’t a good attitude and Eduardo doesn’t agree with it and for things like this he thinks that after ten years i t is the moment to stop with this movement.

I chose this menine because I like the meaning and the colour of the triangle, the size and the place where it is painted. In this Menina we can see two women into a pink inverted triangle. The background is grey. The Menina on the left is wearing a white brown dress and two flowers on her brown hair. The Menina on the right is wearing a beige dress. He has got some flowers on her wrist. In her black hair there are some beige flowers. Both Meninas have got black nails. At the bottom we can see the paint slipping down the wall. This Menine symbolizes the free love between two womens. The sad colours symbolize sadness and silence. These women don’t reveal their true love but they are scary of the society in that age and they hide it inside this triangle. The paint is erasing, this refers to their interior fight. The shadows in the painting symbolize their sadness. The author is Sfhir, he was born in 1981. He is from Madrid, the first picture he painted was in 1995. When he was a child he loved painting, with fourteen years old he was expelled from the high school because he was discovered painting with spray. He has an artistic group ‘La Coma 7’ it was created in 1998,by a multitude of different artists. In his works he combines graffiti with varied tools such as airbrushes, pistols, brushes or rollers.

I chose this Menina because I like It so much. The most important reason is her clothes and the red color that Is the principal one. These things get draw attention of the Menina. When you look at this Menina, the first you see is the red circle that encircle the girl. She is wearing a red dress. On the final of the dress, a cloth very large make curves around the girl. These paint is not anonymous, but the author is invisible on internet. The information about the creator is non-existent. In the painting of Velazquez the principal Menina, Margarita is encircle of a lot of people and objects, she is not alone. But my Menina is alone (the only similar with the painting is the dog) and is encircle by the solitude.

6.Conclusion In this project we learned to write a feature article and an editorial, we knew the story of “Las Meninas de Velázquez”. After analysing the initiative of Eduardo Hermida we realized how a ruined suburb r ecovers its economy.
