2.Formal analysing a.Basic facts One man is wearing dark blue trousers, a green shirt, a brown vest and a black beret. The other man is wearing brown trousers, a yellow shirt, a dark brown vest and a black beret. they aren’t wearing shoes. In the background we can see a stone house and a stone bench. b.Subject matter. In this painting I can see two men who are sitting on a bench in their town. while they are waiting for the day to go by . Maybe they are looking after a herd of sheep. The two men take a herd of sheep to the fields in a high mountain and at the same time they take advantage to dry the tobacco. They have a rest rolling a cigarette and besides. They are here because they can’t stand their wives. (Gonzalo)
In this picture I can see two men who get out of the work. Maybe, they are thinking about their families. Because their families are very far. Perhaps they are in America and they are thinking in Galicia (Dani)
3.Formal qualities What materials are used / how is the work constructed? The painting is an oil on canvas. What lines are there in the work (horizontal, vertical)? Luis seoane didn’t do lines in his work Foreground /middleground/background. In the background we can see a stone house and a stone bench. In the foreground two men rolling a cigarette What colours are used (cold, warm, dark, bright, clear)? The author used warm colours such as yellow. The colours are bright too. What is the atmosphere of the work The painting has a nostalgic atmosphere in this painting. Does the work contain symbols and if so, which, and do they have a meaning? In the painting there are some symbols. The two men haven’t shoes. This explains that those men are from the lower class. They are rolling a cigarette during the break that is another factor to explain that they are poor
4. Judgement a) What do you think about the work? Is it a good work of art? We think that this painting is a good painting because Luis Seoane G painted it to demonstrate the bright side of the poor people. b) Criteria: What criteria do I think are most appropriate for judging the artwork? We think that the most appropriate criteria for judging this artwork are economic and social. c) Judgement: Based on the criteria and evidence, what is my judgement about the quality of the artwork? We think that Seoane had better works than this painting but, this artwork it isn’t all bad. If we would rate it (from 1 to 10), we rated with a 6.
