INTRODUCTION: In this project we are going to talk about movies and in specific about Forrest Gump. We are going to analyze all the things of the film like the poster, the trailer, the best and iconic phrases. Then we are going to write a dialogue with a quote by Forrest Gump. Before, in the individual part, we have analyzed the film and the characters. The objective of this project is to know more about films and cinema, and practice our oral english doing the part of the dialogue. We chose Forrest Gump because it's a very famous film and all the people know it.

SUMMARY OF THE FILM: Forrest Gump is a 1994 American dramatic comedy film which received numerous awards and is based on the novel "Winston Groom". The director "Robert Zemeckis" created very successful films at the ticket office but none achieved the success that Forrest Gump had whose protagonist is the famous actor “Tom Hanks”, with this film won the Oscar to the best director. The film was reviewed by important newspapers and magazines around the world as: “Variety”, “Philadelphia Inquirer”, “Diario El País”, “BBC”, “Rolling Stone”, “LA Weekly”, “Chicago Reader”... In general the reviews are very good and they all agree that it is a movie that reaches the heart and reflects society, but there are also some critics who say that the film is very patriotic and that they are afraid of generating debate. References also say how good the soundtrack is. Forrest Gump reminds us of Joshua Weigel's movie "The Butterfly Circus" because it is also a story of overcoming and tries to give life lessons such as not giving up. In addition, the protagonist is also earning the respect of others and making his way regardless of what the rest think. It also has some similarity with Rain Man because of the character of Raymond in that film, which is autistic. The story is told by Forrest while sitting at a bus stop, he tells the story of his life to the people who sat waiting for the bus but they all left thinking he was crazy and that he was inventing everything, except a lady who he did not judge him and even let her bus pass by to continue listening to his story until the end. Since he begins to narrate his first memories, we can realize the social injustice that he lived as a child, they did not respect him simply because he has a mild intellectual disability and they did not give him the same opportunities as the rest at the beginning. The character of Forrest expresses very well what the film means, despite all the difficulties and problems that life puts him, he goes on with a smile.

2

The mother always defended the idea that we are all equal and did not allow to treat her son differently, she was his greatest support together with Jenny and she said phrases like: "Of course we are all different, Forrest, if God had wanted. for us to be the same, he would have put all the devices on our legs." Phrases like that helped Forrest a lot during his life. While Forrest tells the story, the flashbacks seem to put the viewer in a position and explain in some way why he is waiting for the bus and makes the film more dynamic. The whole film is told from Forrest's point of view and the things that happen next to him, except when in some scenes things are told about Jenny, even though Forrest and she are not together at that moment, like when she tries to kill herself. The climax of this film is at the end because in it is solved in an unexpected way one of the themes that is mentioned throughout the film and that is very important for the protagonist. It is not the most exciting point but it is the part of the movie that makes a difference. There is an Open-ended because it leaves us with the curiosity of how that child's life will be. The point of view of the film allows to interpret parts of the story in its own way. In our point of view the most exciting part is when Forrest can walk without the help of his supports and starts running to escape from the bullies. Also when he was in the war is a very exciting moment. The film contains many lessons and metaphors that lead to the free interpretation of the spectator. In "Forrest Gump" is used an absurd humor with many incongruities that does not offend anyone and makes the movie have a fun time. As for example that the dream of "Bubba" was to open a shrimp business. Also it has many references to how Forrest creates many things and this make the film dynamic. For example, when Dan sent a letter to Forrest saying that there was no need to worry about money, referring to the fact that they had created Apple. Things like that make you love the characters throughout the movie because you see how they are progressing in their lives and how they change their thinking for the better. As for sound and special effects, they seem very good for the time. Music has an important role in the world of cinema because its use creates emotions and makes you get more involved in the story. The music used in this movie seems perfect for the story and with the use of silences that are very important at a crucial moment to give tension to the situation, it makes "Forrest Gump" have very exciting scenes. This movie belongs to the genres of romance, comedy and drama, a very complete movie. Now let's focus on the characters:

3

-FORREST:

About the character we think that he is lit because he is a very fast person and a special person too. Forrest in the film wears a lot of clothing but in the bench he is wearing a blazer with a tie but in the film he wears military clothes or sports clothes or kid clothes, when he was a kid. This character has a very good relationship with the other characters like with the lieutenant or with his infancy friend. The character says “My mama always said, ‘Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get”. With that Forrest is trying to say that life is spontaneous and unpredictable. Everything he does is run and run, is all that he knows how to do but it is an ability that helped him very much like in the war or in the rugby. He expresses his problems running because he doesn’t know to do any other thing. The best traits of the character are running because he doesn’t think very much because he is very innocent. This character is realistically depicted because he tells us his story. The characteristics of this character are important because he is the protagonist and his life is about these characteristics. Forrest is a very innocent person that gives all of him for his friends and for all the people. We think that he is a very honest person. The character is coherence because at the end of the film he assumes the life of his kid and his wife while she is dying. And if he is a honest people he is a credible person too. We think that the character progresses in a right form because he realizes all the people is taking advantage of him.

-JENNY:

Jenny is Forrest's best friend, a blonde girl who did not discriminate against her on the school bus and with whom she spent a lot of time together. She had a difficult childhood due to her father's abuse and found support in Forrest until they grew up and she disappeared because she was not allowed to live her life. Throughout the film we can see how it evolves, it becomes hippie and has a very toxic relationship with a boy who hits her, they were drugged together and Jenny thought of committing suicide several times. Something that draws attention is that she confuses sex with love, for example, in a scene they are in the room at Jenny's university and she thinks that what Forrest wanted was sex. It is a character who has a great evolution throughout history, life made her a consistent person, but some of her decisions took her to the limit. What we can see is a big difference in the stages in which she lived, she matured throughout the film. Although Jenny is a secondary character, we find her an even more interesting character than Forrest Gump himself and with a very interesting psychological complexity that allows the viewer to draw his conclusions about his story.

5

-FORREST GUMP’S MOTHER:

Mrs. Gump is a kind and sacrificial woman, she would give anything for her son and she feels very proud of him for getting better day by day. She has done immoral things only for the sake of his son and has cared for him until the day of his death. Mrs. Gump normally wore a dress, if it came out it was a more formal one and when she was at home an old dress. She is normally at home. She says phrases that stay etched in everyone's mind like the one in the box of chocolates. She could be judged by her actions but she does everything.

6

-LIEUTENANT DAN:

Lieutenant Dan Taylor is the 4th platoon officer stationed in Vietnam during the war. He is a character with a long military tradition and who always took everything very seriously. In the war Forrest save the Lieutenant Dan, but this lose his legs. from that point it is evolving and relating more with Forrest, at first he was lost in the desperation of losing his legs but Forrest helps him and they make a shrimp business with which, they end up getting rich. Lieutenant Dan becomes a good person and he thanks Forrest in his wedding.

7

-BUBBA:

He is a very peculiar person, he is very kind to Forrest and they immediately forge a friendship. He never stopped talking about his big dream of fishing prawns. Bubba used to see himself in the military suit, because whenever we see him he is in the army. Bubba inspired Gump to create the shrimp company Bubba Gump with which he earns a lot of money. Later he donates a part to Bubba's family when he dies. Even after his death Gump thinks a lot about Bubba and he misses him, since he was his best friend. He could be judged by the strange way he talks, and I think that's why he offers Forrest a place next to him.

POSTER ANALYSIS: The title is Forrest Gump and this is the name of the principal character, and over the name of Forrest Gump you can read the actors’ names, it’s a characteristic that we had never seen before in other films. The principal character of the film is sitting on a bench with his suitcase, this action appears in the first moments of the movie and is the place where his story starts. The suitcase represents all the travels in his life. We think that the bench represents the end of his travel. The background of the poster is white, we think that this is like that because until the viewer has watched the movie, he doesn't understand the background. This is the reason why in the background it doesn't appear how normal people see the world because the background is white. We can confirm our theory observing the tagline in the picture, which is “The world will never be the same once you’ve seen it through the eyes of Forrest Gump”. The billing block is under the release date and under the main image, in it, we can read the names of all the people that collaborated in this film like directors, actors and sponsors. The release date is under the main image and it is in blue letters and it represents the premiere date.

MOVIE TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYSnxZKTZzU In the movie trailer, many famous scenes appear. It begins with Forrest on the bench offering chocolates to some old people. Then Forrest appears when he was a child, the trailer shows that he has a low IQ. It also show Forrest meeting Jenny and the adult Forrest saying that she is special for him. When the trailer ends with Forrest and Jenny, it shows an iconic scene with Forrest running to escape from the bullies and Forrest running in the rugby match, and how he became an elite player. We can also see how Forrest was in some historical events of the United States. Then it shows Forrest in the war and his friendship with Bubba. When he returns from the war and he is awarded some prizes. We think that the trailer is so long and the viewer can see all the scenes of the film, this is something that shouldn’t happen because it’s telling all about the important things in the story. On the other hand, we think that although the trailer shows too many aspects of Forrest’s life, they did it to create curiosity to the viewer about the peculiar life of Forrest and want to know he in full.

DIALOGUE: Video: https://youtu.be/qv2F3gnuurY “My mom always said you've got to put the past behind you before you can move on”

-SITUATION: Jenny dies and Forrest is dejected but before, Jenny says sorry to Forrest because she had not valued him. When Jenny is dying their son enters the room and sees her dying. The child did not overcome the loss. Forrest goes to console his son and tells him his story and his mother's phrase.

-CONVERSATION: (...The son watches the scene from the door...)

10

-JENNY: Sorry Forrest...I’m so sorry. I have made you suffer, but you have always been by my side when I needed you. Forrest, you are a good guy and I want the best for you. -FORREST: I think that you are a good girl too. I have nothing to forgive you, I love you too much. I do not want you to worry about anything, I will do everything in my power so that our son can move forward and do not miss anything. -JENNY: I love you too, thanks for everything. (...Jenny dies and Forrest realizes that her son is at the door...) Months go by and Forrest does not get his son to cheer up, so he talks to him: -FORREST: Son come here, I want to talk to you. -SON: Tell me dad. -FORREST: Tell me what happens to you, you have been very bad for months, you don’t smile as before and your grades have dropped. I do not know how to encourage you anymore. -SON: I miss mom. -FORREST: I also miss her but we can't let her absence prevent us from moving forward in life. Listen to me, my mom always said: (...Flashback...) -FORREST MOM: (...Flashback...) You have got to put the past behind you before you can move on. -FORREST: My mom was very intelligent, thanks to her and her teachings I got many things in life. Pay attention to your grandmother's quote, it will help you to overcome the loss, just as it helped me when my best friend died in the war. -SON: My grandmother was right. Dad, I'm going to try to leave the bad times behind and get ahead. Do You help me? -FORREST: I will always help you because you are the most important person to me. -SON: Thanks dad, I love you. -FORREST: I love you too, Forrest.

11

CONCLUSION: Our conclusion is that with this work we have learned a lot about Forrest Gump movie, because when you go deeper into it, you see many things that just watching the movie would not be appreciated, like the personality of some characters, for example Jenny. When you analyze the movie, you understand better her actions, and the same thing happens with other characters and other aspects of the film. It is a great movie full of teachings, for example it teaches us to never give up and pursue our dreams. It also gives us another great teaching, if you want you can because despite the many obstacles with which you see Forrest he always keeps trying, and we believe that everyone should see it.
