Romance by Edgar Allan Poe

Romance, who loves to nod and sing with drowsy head and folded wing among the green leaves as they shake far down within some shadowy lake, to me a painted paroquet Hath been—most familiar bird— taught me my alphabet to say, to lisp my very earliest word while in the wild wood I did lie, a child—with a most knowing eye. Of late, eternal condor years so shake the very Heaven on high with tumult as they thunder by, I have no time for idle cares through gazing on the unquiet sky; and when an hour with calmer wings its down upon my spirit flings, that little time with lyre and rhyme to while away—forbidden things— my heart would feel to be a crime unless it trembled with the strings.

Opinions David Maceiras: I chose this poem because it talks about how the romance taught him all when he was young and then he has not any time to love but, not to fall in love is a crime. Alba Fornos: I chose this poem because it seems different to others. It's called Romance but it's not about nature, a beautiful place… The poem is about life, family, friends and how quiet life should be. David Calvo: For me this poem is about a person that is alone, because the two last lines are about a heart that is stopped and that heart needs a person that helps it to start to beat. I chose this poem because I liked it the first time that I read it, because it is very beautiful and because the poem transmits these feelings very well.

Conclusion of the poem "Romance" Edgar Allan Poe talks about his great love, Virginia. A woman who died at 24 years of tuberculosis. The writer suffered much the death of his wife and drank a lot of alcohol. Virginia is the bird, the eternal condor. The author talks about serious concerns and about the passage of time. The poem shows the pain and grief that Edgar feels.

Author information Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1809 and he was educated in USA, Scotland and England. After that, he was a writer and journalist but he died in 1849 and there are possible causes of his dead like drugs or some diseases. He wrote throughout his life other important poems like: “Song” or “Annabel Lee”. 18

Conclusion of the project In this project, we learned to express our feelings and emotions in a different way, through a poem. We learned the different types of poems that exist and how to illustrate them differently. It also taught us how to analyze the poem "Romance" and what the feelings the author wants to express really mean. we liked this project because it was a funny way to learn something and at the same time we can express what we feel.
