INTRODUCTION The project is about analyzing films, trailers, characters and posters. Also we are doing this project to learn how films are publicized how the trailer is made to catch our attention with the most important shots of the film, how the poster is made to attract people’s attention and curiosity.
We are doing this project so that we can realize which the most important parts of the poster are.
First, we did the individual project.
Secondly, we wrote the introduction and the rest of the project in groups. ABOUT THE FILM: The music in this film is also from Clint Eastwood. It is sad music which makes the film sader.
The movie is recorded in the United States in 2004
Million Dollar Baby is a drama film, since it is based on the plot and deals with situations of life and stories that provoke a great development of the protagonists throughout history. Also, no special effects are seen in this movie.
The film is about a girl named Maggie who has worked as a waitress since she was thirteen years old and wants to become a professional boxer. For that, she resorts to Frankie's gym, where she tries to convince Frankie, a trainer of professional boxers, without any success. Scrap, an ex-boxer friend of Frankie, helps her to convince him until he finally accepts. After some time training, she starts fighting and wins all the
matches until one against the “blue bear”, the German champion, does not turn out as expected… If we talk about Maggie’s past, we can tell that her past was hard, very hard, in a house where they always had problems with the mortgage, and Maggie had to work as a waitress a lot of years to bring some money home. The story is told by Scrap, one of the protagonists of the movie. This affects that there are things that we can only understand at the end of the movie, when it is revealed that Scrap is the narrator. Things that are revealed thanks to the narrator: ● That everything that is heard in off mode is a letter to Frankie’s daughter. ● That Scrap was blinded by a cut.
Within the film there are moments of tension or complicated, some are: ● Between Maggie and her family, since they are ungrateful that they only want her and they pay attention to her for her money, when she has it. ● Between Scrap and Frankie, when they remember what happened in the last Scrap competition, before going blind.
This movie has some stories inside this one. For example: ● When Maggie tells Frankie that one day her father goes to the forest with his dog and only comes back with a shovel, as he leaves to end the suffering of his dog, named Axel. ● The story that Scrap tells maggie in a restaurant, that he, when he was younger in one of the most important battles of his career, along with his manager Frankie, lost one of his eyes. There are several crucial moments that are only resolved at the end: ● At the end of the film, when Frankie has just stuck the needle to Maggie, he reveals the meaning of the phrase puts on the robe he gave her when she started fighting, "Mo Cuishle", its meaning is "My love, my blood".
● Also at the end of the movie when maggie asks Frankie to do with her the same thing her father did with his dog. ● When Scrap was talking at the beginning of the movie and there was a black-skinned man who was fighting with someone who had a cut under his eye. Later, he said that if you bend a person's neck a few degrees more than necessary, it breaks down and you become immobilized, and he was referring to Maggie.
In this movie we can find values like overcome, strength, perseverance, determination and discipline. ● Strength: Maggie tried very hard to get all her wins, she took good care of what Frankie taught her and put it into practice as she was told. In the end it was so good that nobody in her category wanted to fight against her. Maggie was strong, determined and stubborn, as the fighters have to be. ● Perseverance : Maggie insisted to Frankie a lot to train her and after a lot of practice she succeeded, and that at first things would not have gone as she wanted or that from a young age she was working on something she did not like, she didn't stop when she wanted to fulfill her dreams. ● Determination: Maggie knew what she wanted, and did not let anything get into her decisions, as I had already said, she was very stubborn. ● Discipline: Without Frankie's help, Maggie would not have arrived as far as she has come, because when she arrived at the gym, she didn't even know how to hit a punching bag.
The story goes chronologically, but in some parts, it tells us about some stories of different characters, and these stories go blend from the beginning, it tells us about the story of Maggie and Frankie at the same time until the end, but on the middle it tells also the stories of “Danger Barch”, “Scrap”... I think that the tension is in the final part of the film and it is the hardest also.
The climax in this film is in the part where Maggie fought against the “the blue bear”, who was a prostitute before being a boxer and had a dirty way to fight. After the combat, which was won by Maggie, due that the blue bear fought in a dirty way and the referee disqualified her, Maggie had a health problem due to the blow that she received, and I think that was the climax of the movie, because that was is where the biggest problem appears, and the characters have to solve it.
We think the kind of humor that is being used is satirical, especially in boxing combat scenes.
Then, in our opinion, if you won a lot of money in the future and your family came to demand money, when they haven’t worried about you for years and now that you have money, as if by magic they remember you, for us, this is not a family, only people that hadn’t ever believe in you and now, as you have money, they are interested in you. One of the things that in our opinion stands out is how Maggie’s family that they didn’t believe in she and when she won some money and she overcomes the economic problems
and
she
is
in
serious
condition. The family by cheeky and go with her to obtain all her money. For us, this situation is like an irony, because the people that never believe in you and they are the people who expect you to give them money, after a lot of years without
communication, at least they can ask you “how are you?” at least a couple of times a year.
Characters that we do not like, they are Maggie's family since they are ungrateful and only pay attention to their money.
Within the film some scenes are limited, the ideas that the characters have. An example is when at first Maggie talks to Frankie, he discriminates against her and tells her that he will not train her, because she is a woman and also because of his age.
Within the film there are scenes with background music, which create an atmosphere of tension and emotions, especially combat scenes and scenes with intensity. Talking about the setting, we can say that the setting of some scenes are very dark, for example when Maggie is training in the gym and it’s night, in a lot of scenes we can see a dark background and she was training, but in other scene all the gym is illuminated, for example in scenes like those of Danger Barch. In my opinion the gym is the mythical gym of american films, like all old machines with his rusty iron, punching bags…
And if we talk about the soundtrack of the film we can say that it’s one of the most important parts in a film, because a good soundtrack in the opportune time can transmits a lot of feelings, emotions… can make a scene harder , happier… For example at the end of the film the music is the most important thing of the scene, because this little thing can make a scene very different than the same scene without music, because music transmits very well the feelings, emotions… In the cast, apart from the main characters, also there are more interesting characters like Lucia Rijker as Billie "The Blue Bear" Osterman that in the real life, she is a Dutch professional female boxer, kickboxer and actress.
OUR EXPERIENCES: ● I saw some drama sport films but none of them finished like this. I saw for example “Peaceful Warrior” that is about a man who practices artistic gymnastics and confront some serious problems, one of them with his legs, and he learn a lot of things about the real meaning of life. ● This movie reminds me of Creed, which is also about boxing. ● This film reminds me of a story that happened recently: a quadriplegic woman, who had been wheelchair-bound for several years, asked her husband, when the time came, that she could no longer handle the pain I felt, I would kill her with a poison that she bought when in a wheelchair she could still move her arms and order that product. and even though he is now free of conviction, this woman's husband was tried and accused of killing her, because of sexist violence. And it reminds me this story because in both cases the women suffer the same. ABOUT THE CHARACTERS: DANGER “Danger Barch” or in spanish “Peligro” interpreted by Jay Baruchel, I am impressed with this guy because he
is
a
Canadian
actor,
director,
comedian,
screenwriter, fashion model and singer. He is known for his voice role as Hiccup in the “How to Train Your Dragon”. Danger Barch or Peligro, appears at the beginning of the film, at the beginning you can see that the Danger Barch’s dream didn’t correspond with her physical condition, because he is very very skinny. He went to the gym so that became the world champion. Then analysing him mentally, he is very vain and this causes him problems with other characters. I think, and not it’s a
prank that I really think this, I think that he has some type of intellectual disability. He is determined to be the world champion of boxing but from the beginning, all the people know that it’s impossible but that he never gives up, and he continues and continues and continues, and all this can be interpreted as if you want to get some objective, that nobody tells you that you can’t do it, because if you want, and you struggle for achieves it, maybe you can achieve it finally. He always says, in all the film, that he never throws in the towel. Because of Danger Barch’s nature, a man beats him and when he recovered he arrives to train with the same attitude as if it was the first day. He is the pure example of spirit of sacrifice, constances, work… and try to transmit that for many times that you fell down, you always have to rise up, continue all the time. This character didn’t change from the beginning. SCRAP Scrap is the character that I decided to analyse. Scrap is an ex boxer who lives at Frankie’s gym, due to when he left the boxing, his manager run away with the money he had won. In one of his fights, he lost an eye. He was fighting and his adversary G punched him in his face, under her eye, that was the moment when he should had stopped fighting, but he didn’t, so when his adversary punched him again he lost his eye. At first he didn’t realise that he was blind, but after some days he couldn’t see.
Scrap is a nice person, he is the first one to help Maggie and the one who taught some things to “Danger”. When someone made fun of “Danger”, he was there to defend him.
This character always wears comfy clothes like tracksuits, and greasy socks.
Throughout the film, Scrap gives advice to Maggie and supports Danger, defends him and silences the mouth to those who tell him otherwise. Scrap is a humble person, good and willing to teach everything he knows.
This character is the narrator, one of Frankie’s good friend and is the one who starts giving advices to Maggie. FRANKIE Frankie Dunn is a man who, although he passed the age of retirement, still runs a gym and trains boxers in California. He is a white, Catholic Irish roots man.
He is dour, reserved and full of repentance, he has lost contact with his daughter and he searches for salvation by going to church daily, but there he does not find the answers.
His daily life takes place between work in the gym, discussions with Scrap, his only friend, and watching the boxing matches on television, which alternates with the reading of Yeats and the study of classical Greek. This routine is interrupted when he accepts to train Maggie and their relationship goes from professional to personal. Then his defenses collapse and, although he does not show his emotions too clearly, the character undergoes a radical transformation.
MAGGIE My character, Maggie Fitzgerald (Hilary Swank) is a 31 year old woman whose dream is to be a great boxer: She is a very beautiful woman, blonde and with white skin. It is thin and of medium height. compared to the main characters of the movie you will see much younger. she is often seen in the movie wearing sports clothes and before competing in a green robe with the phrase "my love, my blood".
I think she is a very impulsive woman, since she does what she thinks is better without taking into account what the people around her say, although she is also strong, since she did not have a very easy life and still wants to follow her dream.
Through his behavior, he can learn that he never has to go to the first difficulty and that if he has a dream he must fight and fight for everything he wants to achieve.
She is a protagonist represented in a realistic way, because what happens in the movie is a situation that can happen to any person, and she has a belief or idea of life and struggle to achieve it. It is also a consistent and credible character, since anyone who has a clear idea of what they want to do and achieve can do it, just like her. SINOPSIS Frankie Dunn has trained boxers for a lifetime in the ring. At present, runs a gym with his unique friend, Scrap, a veteran ex-boxer.
Maggie Fitzgerald, a girl willing to fight hard for the dream of becoming a great boxer and go out of misery, asks Frankie to train her. persuaded by his determination, reluctantly agrees to direct and represent her. While she wins combat after combat, Frankie and Maggie discover that they share a common spirit, which transcends the pain they drag from their past. Together they will face a battle that will require much more heart and courage than any other they have ever faced.

POSTER The information transmitted by the poster is: The
main
protagonists,
the production
(among them: the director, the creator, the production, the head of the design, the production of the image, the associations ...) and the entertainment company, Warner Bros.
Also it shows us an image with a black background in which the three main actors appear, although they are represented very
dark and it gives us a sense of wanting to be scary.
In the poster we can see the three principal characters of the film, we know that those are the protagonists because they appear in the foreground and their names are highlighted, with the surnames in red. they don’t give any clues about the place where the movie was shot since all the elements are in black color.
The information about people who participated in the film is at the bottom of the poster. The most important information is the name of the film and the principal characters’ name that appear in large, bold and with the colors red and white, that stands out on the black background.
The least important part of the information, which is about the people’ name involved in the production, image, video, associations, the film company… is small and in a yellow color that stands out on the background, but less than the red and white.
“Coming soon” means that the film isn’t published yet but soon the film will come out.
The image appears in dark colors and the text is in highlighted colors. So there are a good balance between the text and the image. The colors give us some clues about how the film is going to be. In this case, the colors are the black and the red. These colors tell us that the movie will be hard, that there will be moments of tension in which characters will suffer and they will let us know. TRAILER https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_RsHRmIRBY&t=75s
We think that they included those scenes of the film because, for example at the beginning of the trailer, Frankie appears sad because his boxer abandons him and as Frankie rejects Maggie. It is also represented as Maggie goes to take the train every day without surrendering and striving to achieve her goal, as well as when Frankie tells him that he will train her.
In the trailer, in some scenes Maggie appears with her mother, that has a very important role in Maggie’s life, and there are other scenes that Maggie is fighting some battles. All this is like the most “important” thing to get an idea of what you will find when you watch the movie without getting spoiler, since people wouldn’t like it. DIALOGUE http://cort.as/-JEDX ●
Ana: Scrap
● Mara: Maggie ● Claudia: Frankie ● Aarón: Danger (voice-over) Maggie and Frankie are training together. Danger is watching them in a corner of the gym.Scrap comes in and stares at them too.
DANGER:(voice-over) She was fantastic, she got to be the best in quickly, she fights for what she loves with a lot of longing and vigour only present in few people. She got an incredible effect on Frankie, he had a new ilusion in his life, he tries to achieve the dream of the one who played the role of his daughter. FRANKIE: (teaching Maggie to fight) No, not like that, stop. MAGGIE: How do you want me to do this, boss? FRANKIE: You need to avoid the right and hit from below in the nose. MAGGIE: (Maggie does what Frankie says) W hat do you think, boss? Did I do it well? (Scrap goes into the gym, and he sees Maggie and Frankie training. He sits near Maggie and Frankie to see them training)
FRANKIE: It is right, but try to do it faster with the arm. MAGGIE: Ok, boss. What do I do now? Can I already compete ? FRANKIE: Not yet, you need to learn more about avoiding and hitting before.
SCRAP: (He gets up and goes near Maggie and Frankie) B oxing is about respect. Getting it for yourself, and taking it away from the other guy. The fight isn’t the only thing in boxeo. FRANKIE: (He goes to pick a bottle of water for Maggie) MAGGIE: ( she goes next to Scrap) W hat do you want to say? SCRAP: (thinking about his past) I was a professional boxer, Maggie, but I wasn’t a good boxer, because didn’t learn this at the time I needed. I didn't need to learn how to fight. In boxing, to hit and dodge isn’t the most important. If you don’t respect the other person you can’t become a good boxer. MAGGIE: I try to respect Scrap, but when the opponent does cheating in the game, I do the same, I need to win. SCRAP: To win isn’t the important. If the other person does cheating, you need to do better than you are doing. You have to show to the other person that you don’t need to do a bad game to win the battle. You have to learn this, Maggie. This is the best you can learn about boxing. MAGGIE: (Maggie sees Scrap and hugs him) Thanks, Scrap. FRANKIE: (He enters the room and gives the bottle to Maggie and goes with Scrap) SCRAP: Go, Frankie. Maggie needs to practice this knock. MAGGIE: (When Frankie and Scrap are going out) Y ou are a professional and good boxer now, Scrap! DANGER: (voice-over) She learned from the best. They wouldn’t be perfect boxers, but they were perfect people. She met them the correct place and moment in her life. They taught her to be the best version of herself and she taught them what is the joy of living, of having a clear objective in life, and in the attempt to achieve it, to achieve happiness, to fight for what you want. CONCLUSION In this project we learn how to analyse a trailer, a poster, a character, and how to create a dialogue. We think it was interesting. To make this project we used what we learnt in this term, but also we used some thing that we learnt the past term when we
learnt how to analyze an advertisement campaign, and we use it to analyze the poster and the trailer.
Also we created a scene written by us, with a dialogue, the situation of the film, the characters involved‌ and the most difficult part, that is acting. With this film we observed how your life can change in a moment. Also that you have to push yourself, work hard, if you want to fulfill your dream.
