WHEN YOU ARE OLD – William Butler Yeats.

When you are old and grey and full of sleep (10) and nodding by the fire, take down this book, (10) and slowly read, and dream of the soft look (10) your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep; (10) how many loved your moments of glace grace, (10) and loved your beauty with love false or true, (10) but one man loved the pilgrim Soul in you, (10) and loved the sorrows of your changing face; (10) and bending down beside the glowing bars, (10) murmur, a little sadly, how love fled (10) and paced upon the mountains overhead (10) and hid his face amid a crowd of stars. (10)

Analysis of the poem. William Butler Yeats was an author of poems, writer of literary texts and drama. Maybe, the man of the poem “When you are old” is him because he died when he was 73 years old and I imagine that he wrote the poem to his wife because he thought that he was living his last days. He loved her and he decided to write the poem to her because he didn’t want to hurt her heart . In the poem, he remembers her best moments when she was young and when he met her. When I read this poem I imagined a woman in an armchair with a book in her hands and a man looking at her. They are married. He looks at her because he thinks that he will die soon. In my opinion, the poem shows that love never disappears.

Structure of the poem.

The structure is very simple and in my opinion is different from to other poems because it has got a stanza but it's long. The poem has got 12 lines with 10 syllables each. The poem follows a formal poetic structure. This composition follows a rhyme. The lines of the poem are written 2 by 2. These are the words that rhyme:

∙ Sleepdeep. ∙ Book look. ∙ Graceface. ∙ Trueyou. ∙ Bars stars. ∙ Fledoverhead.

Brandi Carlile Hiding my heart. So this is how the story went I met someone by accident That blew me away That blew me away It was in the darkest of my days When you took my sorrow and you took my pain and buried them away, you buried them away. And I wish I could lay down beside you When the day is done and wake up to your face under the morning sun but like everything I´ve ever known. I´m sure you´ll go one day so I´ll spend my whole life hiding my heart away. I dropped you off at the train station and put a kiss on top of your head I watched you wave I watched you wave Then I went on home to my skyscrapers neon lights and waiting papers that I call home I call it home And wish I could lay down beside you when the day is done and wake up to your face against the morning sun but like everything I´ve ever known I´m sure you´ll go one day so I´ll spend my whole life hiding my heart away.

I woke up feeling heavy hearted I´m going back to where I started The morning rain The morning rain and you know I wish that you were here but that same old road that brought me here Is calling me home Is calling me home And I wish I could lay down beside you When the day is done and wake up to your face against the morning sun but like everything I´ve ever known so I´ll spend my whole life hiding my heart away and I can´t spend my whole life hiding my heart away.

About the author. Brandi Carlile is an American singer and composer. She sings pop, rock, alternative country, indie and folk. When she was 15 she started to play the guitar and to compose. Brandi made some presentations in different bars in her country and then she signed a contract with a record company. She filmed videos in her house and then, they were sold. She went on a tour, there, she wrote songs for her album. Some years later, her second album was published. The tone in a song of this second album was different VOC from the other songs because she had a problem in her vocal cords voice. Her producers said that was perfect and she explained that this problem was technically wrong but emotionally right. Now, Brandi Carlile has got 3 albums. I chose this song because it´s beautiful. Adele sings this song too and I like her version.

About the song. This song tells a story. A girl met a boy. She loved him because he was amazing. She did not want said say him this. She dreamed with her love and she wanted be with him all her life , but one day, the boy left the city and she was devastated. She saw how he went away. She returned to her house. She kept on thinking about him. The next days, when the boy left the town, the lady was very sad but she still wanted to be with (the man) him for the rest of her life. I think that maybe, Brandi Carlile wrote this song because she had lost someone very much loved by her. When writers of songs write, they express their feelings about things that they think or they express her life.
