5. Poems 5.1. Javier Poem (Follower) 5.1.1. Introduction In this project I’m going to talk about a poem. The poem which I’m going to analyse was written by Seamus Heaney. The poem is called “Follower” and it is about how a boy admired and followed his father.
5.1.2. Seamus Justin Heaney Seamus Heaney (1939 - 2013) was the highest child of nine born to a farming family in County Derry, Northern Ireland. Heaney was a professor at Harvard from 1981 to 1997 and he worked as a playwright, translator and lecturer. He won a lot of awards.
12
5.1.3. “Follower” This poem was written by Seamus Heaney and it was published in 1966 in the book “Death of a Naturalist”. In this poem Heaney tries to reflect how people live in the farm. The poem is about a boy who admires his father and he follows him in the farm. The boy is very clumsy. I think that this farm is in Ireland because Heaney was born there. I think that the poem was called “Follower” because the boy follows his father where he goes.

5.2. Diego Poem (Storm on the island) We are prepared: we build our houses squat, Sink walls in rock and roof them with good slate. The wizened earth had never troubled us With hay, so as you can see, there are no stacks Or stoocks that can be lost. Nor are there trees Which might prove company when it blows full Blast: you know what I mean - leaves and branches Can raise a chorus in a gale So that you can listen to the thing you fear Forgetting that it pummels your house too. But there are no trees, no natural shelter. You might think that the sea is company, Exploding comfortably down on the cliffs But no: when it begins, the flung spray hits The very windows, spits like a tame cat Turned savage. We just sit tight while wind dives And strafes invisibly. Space is a salvo. We are bombarded by the empty air. Strange, it is a huge nothing that we fear. Ted Hughes
5.2.1.Introduction In this project I analyse a poem that I chose. I chose a poem by Ted Hughes. The poem’s name is “Storm on the island”. This poem is about a storm on an island, where people are preparing to the storm.
14
5.2.2.Ted Hughes Ted Hughes was born on England in 1930 and he died in 1998. He was a poet and a children’s writer . He was married a poet, but she suicided at 30 years old. The most important theme in his poems is nature.
5.2.3.Analysis My opinion about this poem is that the other wants to represent that there are some bad times, and you have to be prepare to confront it. I think that he writes this poem because his wife suicided and he crossed a bad time because he wasn't prepared to it. This poem has nineteen verse and one stanza. The verses of this poem are long. I think that the storm is a metaphor that represents a bad time .

5.3. Sergio Poem (There is another sky)
There is another sky, by Emily Dickinson There is another sky, even serene and fair, and there is another sunshine, though it be darkness there; 5
never mind faded forest, Austin, never mind silent fields here is a little forest, whose leaf is ever green; here is a brighter garden,
10
where not a frost has been, in its unfading flowers I hear the bright bee hum: Prithee, my brother, into my garden come!
5.3.1.Introduction - The title of the poem really called my attention, and when I read it, I thought that it meant the same sky, but watching it from the other side of the world. I chose the poem because I like the idea of talking about death referring to it as “another sky.
16
5.3.2.Emily Dickinson -
Emily Dickinson was born on december 10, 1830. She was imprisoned during a lot of time during her life in his father’s house. During this time, she dedicated to write poetry. All of her poetry, was published after her death.
5.3.3.Theme - The voice of the poem is the receptor’s brother, or sister, and he wants his brother to come with him to “the other sky”, or the death.
5.3.4.Speaker - The first time that I read it, I thought that the “second sky” was the same sky, but VOC from other point of view, but the second time, I realized about something, and I thought the poem was talking about the sky who is after death. The voice of the poem is talking from the called “second sky”. That makes me think that he had a tragic dead and he couldn’t say goodbye to his brother, and that’s why he wants to run into him. I think the voice of the poem can see all what is happening around his brother from an omniscient way, but I’m not very sure about that, because that voice could know that his brother is still alive only because he isn’t in the sky.
17
5.3.5.Tone - I think the speaker of the poem is talking with sadness and melancholy. In some lines of the poem, the speaker is talking about the place where he or she is, and in the rest of lines is trying to persuade his brother to come with him, and this is one of the things that called my attention about the poem.
There is another sky, even serene and fair, and there is another sunshine, though it be darkness there; never mind faded forest, Austin, never mind silent fields here is a little forest, whose leaf is ever green; here is a brighter garden, where not a frost has been, in its unfading flowers I hear the bright bee hum: Prithee, my brother, into my garden come! -
It’s talking about the place where he is.
It’s trying to persuade his brother to come with him.
5.3.6.Tension - The principal problem, is the distance (that it is) between the two brothers. The voice of the poem wants to see his brother again, and I’m sure that the feeling is mutual. I think it’s sad that the voice of the poem wants his brother to come to stay with him, even if he loves him very much, but I think this is the only possible “solution”.
5.3.7. Context 18
The poem was published in 1890, on the S.XIX . It doesn’t know when it was written, because Dickinson didn’t published it during his lifetime.
5.3.8. Form The poem doesn’t follow a formal poetic structure. The stanzas and lines of the poem have different length. The poem has a Slant Rhyme, which Dickinson uses so often.
5.3.9. Shyntax The poem is not clearly punctuated, because sometimes she uses full stop , other times (uses) semicolon, dashes…
5.3.9. Language The voice of the poem talks informally, but (the voice of the poem) it appreciates so much the receptor. The poem hasn’t any onomatopoeia, but uses two different ways to speak to the receptor; when it’s talking about the place and when it’s trying to persuade his brother.
19
6. Containers of the poem 6.1Diego’s container I made this container because a pen is an object where you can have texts or information.
20
6.2 Sergio’s container - I’m going to dedicate the poem with its container to one of my friends, who lives in Barcelona. I decided to make this container because he likes origami and I think it is an interesting way to write a poem. He was who involved me in the origami world.
21
6.3 Javier’s container I choose this container because this think represent the video games.
22
7. Conclusion In this project, we learned how to analyze poetry, and how to write our own haikus and acrostics
