1. Introduction In this project we are going to analyse poetry. But to do it we used all the techniques that we have learnt during all the ESO. We started this project creating different kind of poems as for example: haikus, acrostics… etc. Then we chose a poem and we started to analyse the content and the feelings that we felt the first time that we read it. Javier chose “I’m Nobody! Who are you?” by Emily Dickinson and Noa chose “When you are old” by William Butle Yeats.

5. "When you are old" by W. B. Yeats When you are old and grey and full of sleep, And nodding by the fire, take down this book, And slowly read, and dream of the soft look Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;

How many loved your moments of glad grace, And loved your beauty with love false or true, But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you, And loved the sorrows of your changing face;

And bending down beside the glowing bars, Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled And paced upon the mountains overhead And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.

a) Introduction I have chosen this poem because it transmits me a sad and lovely feeling because it reflects the love a man feels for a women. b) Author's biography He was born on 13 June 1865 in Dublin. He was one of the most representative figures of 20th century. Also,he was one of the founders of Abbey Theatre in 1899. In 1923 he won the Nobel Prize in Literature. He had a famous family; his father and brother were famous painters,his mother belonged to a rich family and also he had two sisters : Lily and Lolly. He married in 1918 with a “medium, called George Hyde-Lees and he had two childrens: Michael and Anne. Finally, he died on 28 January 1939 in France. c) Analysis I think that this poem is about a lovely story that is narrated by a widower. 10

The tittle of the poem refers to a sadness and beautiful period on the life of a person. I think that with it we can appreciete that this poem is told by an old person. We can think this because the person who tells about the old age is only an old man or an old women. Also, we can appreciate that Yeats doesn’t use a old words. The structure of the poem is divided on stanzas. The stanzas represent a different moments in the women’s lifes. - Content 1. Speaker : The person that is telling the poem is a specific person. This person is an omniscient narrator. He doesn’t express it in 1st person and I think that the narrator is an old man because he tells the pass of the time of a woman. 2. Tone:In the poem we can observate that the author uses a consistent sad tone for the sad story that he is telling. 3. Tension: In the poem we can see an internal conflict. This confict is a spiritual and philosophical conflict and it is about the love that he feels for a woman but this problem isn’t solved 4. Context: This poem was written in 1891. In the 19th century we can see the Romantism and in the poem we can observate the love that the author expresses uses. Also, it is based on a sonnet by Pierre de Rosard - Form 1. Structure:This poem follows a normal poetic structure. 2. Stanza and lines: Their stanzas and lines have the same length. 3. Rhyme scheme: The poem follows the rhyme scheme ABBA and this is an end rhyme. For example “sleep” rhymes with “deep” and “look” with “book”. - Syntax 1. Verbs: The author used active verbs.

11

2. Sentence structure: The poem uses complete sentences and natural word order. 3. Punctuation: The punctuation that the author uses represents the passage of time. For this reason, William uses commas in all the poem except at the end of the poem because it represents the end of the woman’s life. - Language 1. Word choice: In the poem the author used formal words. 2. Meaning: Some words are metaphorical words and phrases such as: Pilgrim soul, sorrow of your chaning face. 3. Rhythm: All of the verses have 11 syllables, except the last verse in each of the stanza. - Imagery 1. Visual and sensory : The images are figurative and abstract. They aren’t repeated in the poem. 2. Symbolisim: Some actions that symbolize things such as love, youth, etc are on the poem. Also in this, we can see a figurative figure language in the poem.This figurative figurate language is a personification in the sentence “And hid his face amid a crowd of stars. d) My poem to my father The object that I have chosen to present is a kind of book. This book is a special object. In the cover we can appreciate that it seems a new book and also it has the tittle of the poem. Inside of the book, we can appreciate the poem in different pages. In the pages we can see the images, things or actions that represent the verses. When we pass the pages of the book we can appreciate that the poem is deteriorating. Finally, in the back cover it seems an old book. I do this because in the poem the narrator says that the girl reads a book and for this

12

reason I have chosen this object. The other characteristc (the degrade in the book) is because in the poem it is narrated the pass of the time. This book is for my farther because he likes books and poems and I know that he likes this particular presentation and poem.

5. "I'm Nobody! Who are you?" by E. Dickinson I’m Nobody! Who are you? Are you – Nobody – too? Then there’s a pair of us! Don’t tell! they’d advertise – you know! How dreary – to be – Somebody! How public – like a Frog – To tell one’s name – the livelong June – To an admiring Bog! a) Introduction I have chosen this poem because when I read it for the first time I thought that it is a short poem but with a lot of feelings inside. b) Author's biography E. Dickinson was born in US and she lived during the 19th. During her childhood she studied in two schools but finally she returned to her house. She wrote almost 2000 poems during her life but because she was a woman she couldn’t publish them and when she published a poem the publishers modified it. In her adulthood she was secluded in the house of his father. Finally she died in Massachusetts. c) Analysis - Content 1. Speaker: In this poem the speaker is the poet, who is an omniscient narrator because she knows everything about herself. She uses the 1st person because she is the poem protagonist. 2. Tone: The tone in this poem expresses a sad feeling, related to the feeling of not being anyone, I think it, just because in the title and in the first line he says “I’m Nobody! Who are you? 3. Tension: I think that the biggest tension point of this poem is when he says “Don’t tell! they’d advertise – you know!” because he explains that if you tell a secret to somebody he will diffuse it.

14

4. Context: “I’m Nobody! Who are you?” was published in 1891. In this period of time US was recovering from the Civil War. - Form 1. Structure: This poem doesn’t follow any formal poetic structure, it is a characteristic of Emily Dickinson’s poetry. 2. Stanza and lines: The poem is made of two stanzas of four lines each. 3. Rhyme Scheme: The poem has no regular scheme of end rhyme. However, line 1 rhymes with line 2 and line 5 with line 7. Each of these rhymes is masculine. There are no feminine rhymes in the poem. - Syntax 1. Enjambment: There is no enjambment in this poem. 2. Verbs: In this poem every verb are in active voice. 3. Sentence Structure: The author uses a combination of complete sentences and fragments. 4. Puntuation: In this poem it is very important the use of exclamation marks and question marks, because the author tryed to represent a dialogue. For example: “I’m Nobody! Who are you?” - Language 1. Word choice: Emily Dickinson uses a conversational world choice. 2. Rhythm: The poem doesn’t follow any pattern. - Figurative language 1. Simile: “How public, like a frog”. Comparison between the speaker and a frog. 2. Anaphora: How dreary to be somebody! 15

How public, like a frog d) My poem to Javi Prado I have created this “performance because who is going to receive it loves jellies and computing. It is a chewing gum box but inside it there is a bundle that contains a USB and when you connect it to the computer you can read the poem.

7. Conclusion In this project we learned how to analyse poetry in two branches: feelings and content. We learned also how to write haikus, acrostics, calligrams, etc. For us the best of the project was to write haikus, acrostics‌ and the worst was to analyse the poem.
