1.Introduction. This project is about music and poetry, but we only worked with poetry. The first thing that we did, it was to read how the different poems do and what their names are. Then, we wrote different poems and we analysed a poem each one. And finally, we prepare a different container for present our chosen poem.

5.A dream within a dream. Take this kiss upon the brow! And, in parting from you now, thus much let me avow — You are not wrong, who deem that my days have been a dream; yet if hope has flown away in a night, or in a day, in a vision, or in none, is it therefore the less gone? All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream. I stand amid the roar of a surftormented shore, and I hold within my hand grains of the golden sand — How few! yet how they creep through my fingers to the deep, while I weep — while I weep! O God! Can I not grasp them with a tighter clasp? O God! can I not save one from the pitiless wave? Is all that we see or seem but a dream within a dream? 11
5.1. Biography of the author. The poet of this poem is Edgar Allan Poe. He was born on 19th January 1809 in Boston (Massachusetts). Poe was an author, poet, editor and literary critic. He belongs to the American Romantic Movement.. He was to the University of Virginia where studied languages, and then he was to the Military Academy of the United States. Poe wrote the poem called “A dream within a dream” in 1849. This poet died on 7th October 1849 in Baltimore (Maryland).
5.2. Analyse. 5.2.1. Introduction. The title of the poem “A Dream Within a Dream” is symbolic because it refers to the important things of poet’s life that are “disappearing”, for example, the parents of Poe died when he was a child, his brother died when he was twenty two years old and his wife, Virginia, died in 1947 too. For this reason, this title refers to some people of the poet’s family that are dead , and it is a metaphor. “A Dream Within a Dream” is a long poem that has got twenty four lines. It is divided in two stanzas. The first stanza has got eleven lines and the second has got thirteen lines. Other poems by Edgar Allan Poe are “Lenore” that is about the death of a beautiful woman; “Annabel Lee” which is about the love between Poe and Annabel Lee; and “”Ulalume” that is about the death of a woman like “Lenore”. The author uses new words in the poem. 5.2.2. Content.
5.2.2.1. Speaker. The speaker of this poem is the poet, Edgar Allan Poe, because he talks about his life and his family. It is involved in the poem because he refers to himself in 1st person when he talks that his days were a dream and when he writes the metaphor in the second stanza: I stand amid the roar of a surftormented shore, and I hold within my hand grains of the golden sand — 12
How few! yet how they creep through my fingers to the deep, while I weep — while I weep! O God! Can I not grasp them with a tighter clasp? O God! can I not save one from the pitiless wave? In this part, the speaker refers to himself like a victim because the important people of his life are “disappearing”. The speaker is from an identifiable time period, in particular, he belongs to the American Romantic Movement because in his poetry uses themes like death or love.
5.2.2.2. Tone. I think that this poem is a farewell letter from the important people of the poet’s life that are “disappearing”. For this reason, Poe talks with rage and sadness in this poem. The tone changes as the poem progresses because for example, the author expresses sadness in the first stanza when he said goodbye to that people: And, in parting from you now, thus much let me avow — You are not wrong, who deem that my days have been a dream; But he expresses rage in the second stanza when he does the metaphor. For this reason, the tone isn’t consistent at the beginning and at the end of the poem.
5.2.2.3. Tension. The conflict of this poem is spiritual and moral, because the poet talks about the death of some members of his family and he expresses the rage and sadness that he feels because he can’t do anything to save them. In the poem, the poet expresses this conflict with metaphors and with a
question that he writes at the end of the poem (Is all that we see or seem but a dream within a
13
dream?). Finally, the conflict doesn’t resolve because his relatives are dead and he can’t do anything to help them.
5.2.2.4. Context.
Edgar Allan Poe wrote this poem, “ A Dream Within a Dream ”, on 31st May 1849. It was published in a Boston newspaper called “Flag of Our Union”. The poem and the author belong to the American Romantic Movement. In that period there were bad conditions of life. His wife
dead because she had tuberculosis and his brother dead because he drank a lot of alcohol. This is the reason why Poe talks about the disappearance of the important people of his life, so these events have influenced him to understand the poem. Other poets from this period wrote about similar themes (death, love…) like Edgar Allan Poe.
5.2.3. Form.
5.2.3.1. Structure. This poem doesn’t follow a formal poetic structure.
5.2.3.2. Stanza and lines. This poem has got twenty four lines. These lines are divided in two stanzas. The first stanza has got eleven lines and the second has got thirteen lines. The lines of this poem have got more or less the same length and the stanzas too.
5.2.3.3. Rhyme scheme. Poe uses the final rhyme in the poem “A Dream Within A Dream” because every word of the final of the verses rhyme between them: Take this kiss upon the br ow ! And, in parting from you n ow , thus much let me av ow — You are not wrong, who d eem 14
that my days have been a dr eam ; yet if hope has flown aw ay in a night, or in a d ay , in a vision, or in n one , is it therefore the less g one ? All that we see or s eem is but a dream within a dr eam . I stand amid the r oar of a surftormented sh ore , and I hold within my h and grains of the golden s and — How few! yet how they cr eep through my fingers to the d eep , while I weep — while I w eep ! O God! Can I not gr asp them with a tighter cl asp ? O God! can I not s ave one from the pitiless w ave ? Is all that we see or s eem
but a dream within a dr eam ?
5.2.4. Figurative Language. The figurative language device s that the poet uses in “A Dream Within A Dream” is the metaphor. He wrote two metaphors in this poem. The first metaphor is the title: “A Dream Within a Dream”. It means that a person can differentiate between reality and fantasy, and for this reason the poem asks “ Is all that we see or seem but a dream within a dream?” at the end. The second metaphor that the poet wrote is in the second stanza: 15
In this metaphor he refers to the members of his family that are dead
5.2.5. Syntax. ‘A Dream Within A Dream’ has got some enjambments because the poet expresses an idea in one line and in the next he continues expressing this idea, for example: You are not wrong, who deem that my days have been a dream …………………… All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream. …………………… O God! Can I not grasp them with a tighter clasp? O God! can I not save one from the pitiless wave? Poe uses active verbs in this poem too.
16
6.3. Recipient. I chose the poem “ A Dream within A Dream” because when I read it for the first time, I felt the same feelings that Poe felt when his relatives died. I said this because my uncle (one of my mum’s brothers) died five years ago, my grandad died three years ago, my great grandmother died two years ago and my greatfather died three months ago. All of these people, that are very important for me, died because they had some illness like cancer or Alzheimer. For this reason I decided to dedicate this poem to these people because although they aren’t now with me, they will be always present in my life. Finally, to present my poem, I decided to do a sand clock because although the time passes, these people will be always in my heart.

6.If you forget me. I want you to know
one thing.
You know how this is:
if I look
at the crystal moon, at the red branch of the slow autumn at my window,
if I touch
near the fire
the impalpable ash
or the wrinkled body of the log, everything carries me to you, as if everything that exists, aromas, light, metals, were little boats that sail toward those isles of yours that wait for me. Well, now, if little by little you stop loving me I shall stop loving you little by little. If suddenly you forget me do not look for me, for I shall already have forgotten you. 18
If you think it long and mad, the wind of banners that passes through my life, and you decide to leave me at the shore of the heart where I have roots, remember that on that day, at that hour, I shall lift my arms and my roots will set off to seek another land. But if each day, each hour, you feel that you are destined for me with implacable sweetness, if each day a flower climbs up to your lips to seek me, ah my love, ah my own, in me all that fire is repeated, in me nothing is extinguished or forgotten, my love feeds on your love, beloved, and as long as you live it will be in your arms without leaving mine.

6.1. Biography of the author. Pablo Neruda was Ricardo Eliécer Neftalí Reyes Basoalto. He was born on 12th july 1904 in Parral, Region of Maule and he died on 32th september 1973 in Santiago, Metropolitan Region of Santiago. He died because he had got prostate cancer and cardiac failure. He was one of the most important poets of the time. Pablo won the “Nobel Prize for Literature” in 1971 and the “ Doctorate Honoris Causa” for the Oxford University. Also, he was a politician of the Communist Party and the french ambassador .
6.2. Analyse. 6.2.1. Introduction. The title of my poem is symbolic, I think that it refers a person, specifically a woman that the author loved. For the title I know it because the title expresses love and sadness. My poem is long and it is divided in irregular stanzas. Other love poem s by this author is “ Twenty Love Poems and a Despair Song”, This poem was written when he was married with his third wife, Matilde Urrutia and he was in Switzerland and his wife was travelling to Paris. He used current words.
6.2.2. Content. 6.2.2.1.Speaker. The speaker in my poem is the author that is in love with a girl and he is an omniscient narrator. In this poem the author is referring to himself in some parts and in the other parts he is referring to a girl that, I suppose that she is his wife. The author belongs to vanguardism and postmodernism . In this poem I don’t really know the historical context because his theme is the love and the words that he used to write about it is very common.
20
6.2.2.2.Tone. I think that the tone of the author in this poem is very slowly and shocking because the boy was telling her that when she forgot him, he forgot her and it is very important to understand the poem because it expresses very well that the poem is about love. I think that the tone doesn't change and it is consistent from the beginning and to the end of the poem.
6.2.2.3.Tension. I think that the tension in this poem is when the author says: “Well, now, If little by little you stop loving me I shall stop loving you little by little” Because the boy talks to a girl and he tells that it can happen. I think that it is an internal conflict because he is in love with a girl and she forgot him or he thinks that she forgot him or because he is in love with her. I think that this conflict is developed in the poem in this part: “..and you decide to leave me at the shore...” I think that the conflict is resolved because at the end the boy says that he is really in love with her and he doesn’t think that she will forget him. 6.2.2.4.Context. This poem was written when he was in Switzerland and his wife in Paris. After that time Neruda was living with Matilde in Naples and Capri because he was exiled. These events change the theme of the poem because the distance between Pablo and his wife is the theme of the poem so the love between them is the theme.
21
6.2.3. Form. The structure of my poem is very irregular because the stanzas have got fiveteen verses, two verses, etc. It has got six stanzas and fifty one lines. As I said before, the stanzas don’t have the same length. I think that it can be this way because it can be a way to relate their story and it can be the pass of the time while the boy was becoming aware that the girl was his real love. There isn’t a specific rhyme.
6.2.4. Figurative language. My poem has got metaphors. One of this is: “and my roots will set off to seek another land.” Those verses represent the memories and the feelings of the author. “if each day a flower climbs up to your lips to seek me” This flower refers to the love that he fell toward his wife. In these verses: “You know how this is: if I look
at the crystal moon, at the red branch of the slow autumn at my window,
if I touch
near the fire
the impalpable ash
or the wrinkled body of the log” When the author wrote these verses he was in a hotel just off a lake in Switzerland and it was his inspiration 22
6.3.Recipient. I chose to give and to dedicate my poem to one of the most important person of my family, my grandad although he isn't with us, because he died of cancer when I was a little baby. I didn’t know a lot about my grandad but my father, he was his father, told me a lot of things about him. One of those things is that he loved the beach and that is why I chose to make this recipient. Although my poem says that I forgot my grandad, I will never forget my grandad and he will always be in my heart. For this reason I wrote: “ If you forget me... I won't forget you ”
23
7.Conclusion. In this project we learn a lot of things of poetry. Andrea though t that it would be more different that in real is. In the first time she didn't really like poetry but when we wrote different poems she liked it and she seemed very funny. Although the idea to analyse a poem seemed a little boring. Now she likes poetry especially to do acrostics. Before to do the project, Patricia didn't like poetry a lot, but now she likes it more because she understood that poetry is a way to express our feelings and that it can be funny, especially to do poems like acrostics, haikus... Also, we analysed a poem each one and we wrote different poems with different things. We think that Loly wanted to do this project because she wanted to the students understand the poetry of a different way.
