1.Introduction This project is about the analyse of the book ‘The Lost Thing’. When we saw the cover page we thought the story was about a desert, contaminated and boring city where people just worked but the red machine is something different with respect to the city.
2.Book analyse The author: Shaun Tan is an Australian draughtsman and writer, he grew up in the northern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia. He graduated from the University of Western Australia in 1995 with joint honours in Fine Arts and English Literature, and currently works full time as a freelance artist and author. He lives in Melbourne with his partner Inari Kiuru, and a small yellow parrot. He won an oscar by his short film ‘The Lost Thing’. Setting This book is set in an indeterminate time and in a modern and contaminated city where people just work. Plot The story is about a man who finds a strange red machine in a beach, he tries to find his owner but the thing is simply lost. we think one of the messages of the book is that people don’t mind about some things that don’t fit in their environment like maltreatment, poverty, etc. Characters: The protagonist: He’s the narrator of the story, it’s a normal man, he wears glasses and the author draws him as himself. The lost thing: It’s a strange red machine which doesn’t belong to that city Pete: He’s a protagonist’s friend, he only appears just once when the protagonist visits him to ask him if he knows where the lost thing comes from.
3. Conclusion This book has different messages but the most important is that we live catched in the routine and we don’t take care of some things and we don’t see that, the machine represents all the things that we don’t see, like maltreatment, poverty, etc The author wants to tell us how the actual cities are, modern and contaminated and how the people always follow their routines. The book has a lot of details in its drawings After reading the album we think that we would buy this book, it’s a children’s book, yes, but it has a great drawing and in some aspects it is not a children’s book. We think this project was great, we never did something like this, this was different. We learned to analyse the images of a graphic novel and think deeper about the themes of a book. We think the hardest part of this project was to understand the meaning of the pipes in the book, the easiest part was to analyse the cover page.
