“I have nothing but amazing things to say about MaryEllen and Marty. My wife and I were looking to buy our first home and initially felt lost and overwhelmed by all the infomation that’s out there. That’s when MaryEllen and Marty helped. They are extremely knowledgeable about the market, especially in South Florida. They navigated us through the entire process, were very patient with us and gave us great advice. They found the perfect home for us and continued to be there for us every step of the way, providing the best guidance, knowledge and support as we found our home, made an offer. had our home inspection, selected home insurance and closed on our home. They’re great at communicating both by phone and email and made staying in contact a breeze. Not only are they experienced and professional, but they’re also very kind and genuine people. February is Black History Month, also known as African American History Month. It is an annual observance in the United States and Canada that celebrates the achievements and contributions of black individuals. First recognized in February of 1926 when historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History announced the second week of February as "Negro History Week."
Over the years, the celebration expanded to an entire month, and in 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month. "I call upon the public and the press to recognize the important contributions of black history in the history of the United States," he said.
But the history of Black History Month extends even further back. In 1915, black community leaders in Chicago held the first "Negro History Week" to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Organized by a group known as the "Committee of Ten," which included prominent figures such as W.E.B. Du Bois, Mary McLeod Bethune, and Carter G. Woodson.
Since its inception, Black History Month has been a time to recognize and honor the countless black leaders and activists who have made significant contributions to society. "A people without the knowledge of their history, origin, and culture is like a tree without roots," said Marcus Garvey, a Jamaican-born black nationalist leader.
As we celebrate Black History Month, it is essential to remember and recognize the struggles and triumphs of the black community. It is also a time to reflect on our progress and the work that still needs to be done toward racial equality.

If you’re a cyclist, a runner, or a walker take your passion one step or one mile further by spending your Sunday morning exercising with a community that has the same pastime. For a decade, members of an active community have been benefiting their health, while benefiting the health of the many children and families at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (JDCH).
The 13th Annual Group Tour de Broward will take place on March 6th at Miramar Regional Park from 7:00 am-1:00 pm. Participants can choose between 50K or 100K bicycle rides, a 5K run or a 3K walk. There will also be the sports-themed “Power of Play Kid Zone” which will provide healthy, fun activities for children ages 13 and younger. Registration fees range from $15-$50 depending upon the event one signs up for and the sign-up date.
This year’s event has already raised more than $500,000 for South Florida’s largest pediatric facility serving Broward, Palm Beach, and northern Miami-Dade counties.
“Philanthropy is an important part of the growth of our hospital and Tour de Broward is a fun way for people of all ages and abilities to help ensure our kids continue to have access to next level pediatric healthcare,” said Scott Wester, MPH, CEO of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.
Last year more than 7,500 participated in-person and virtually, raising more than
$550,000, positively impacting more than 80,000 kids who required outpatient visits, surgery, admissions, and observation stays during the year. So far, in its twelve-year history, the Tour de Broward has raised more than $5 million for pediatric healthcare in South Florida.
Pre-registration and day-of registration fees range from $15-$50, depending on the event and sign-up date. Participants can register in advance at www.tourdebroward. com or at the park on the day of the event. For riders, there may be an additional fundraising commitment, although some exclusions apply. For those unable to participate on the day of the event, a virtual participation donation can be made online at tourdebroward.com.

Out with the old and in with the new. Or, more accurately, the relatively new. For Shenanigans Sports Pub owner Patrick Utter, that’s the operating principle for 2023.
“People still refer to Eastside as ‘the new location,’ Patrick says. “Then I remember that we opened Eastside in 2008, and I laugh. It seems like yesterday, but it’s already been 15 years. It’s not so new anymore.”
Shenanigans Eastside is now the only Shenanigans in town after the recent, reluctant shuttering of the original Hollywood location across from T-Y Park after 30 years. A new year often brings change, and so it is for one of South Broward’s most enduring sports bars and gastropubs.
“I’ll miss the old place because it was a really nice watering hole, but this is home now – it’s got everything anybody could want,” Patrick says. “We have a Call Ahead, Convenient, Drive-through window for takeout. We have late-night dining with a kitchen that stays open past midnight. We’ve got more than 60 HDTVs showing all the games. And we have a menu with more than 200 items, including Fresh fish, pizza, barbecue, slow roasted prime rib, certified black angus burgers and our Award-winning wings.”
Patrick and wife-partner Christine are encouraged to see that many loyal west customers are making the 2 ½-mile trip east. And they’re happy that the two staffs have blended to form one new “superteam,” including Jeremy Partridge (CEO), Chef Johnson (head chef at the Park Road flagship for 17 years), Eastside Chef Jose (another long-timer) along with veteran
BBQ pitmaster TJ.
“Our formula is still the same – this is where the locals go,” Patrick Utter says.
The first big party and test for the new team will come during the NFL’s Big Game, to be played Sunday, Feb. 12. Plan ahead for your Wings and Tailgate party NOW!
“Always a great day for us,” Utter says. “Now if only the Dolphins could somehow make their way there one of these years.”
Shenanigans will still be involved as a sponsor of Hollywood’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade downtown (Sunday, March 13) and will celebrate ALL Weekend, Friday, March 17-Sunday, March 19.
Shenanigans Eastside was born when Patrick and Christine bought two neighboring restaurants in 2008 – a shuttered Pizza Hut and Charlie’s Bar-B-Q. He connected the properties by building tiki-thatched covered breezeway. The south side has a family-friendly dining room along with a Southern Pride smoker that puts out a full range of barbecue options (including Great ribs, delicious brisket, chicken and pulled pork).
The north side features a traditional sports bar environment with large bar,
high-top tables and a kitchen that features a multi-deck Baker’s Pride brick pizza oven along with award-winning wings, Angus burgers and fresh fish. The encyclopedic menu also includes sandwiches, wraps, salads, nachos, entrees and daily specials. Daily all-day drink specials include $7 Jameson’s Irish Whiskey, Absolut Vodka, Beefeater Gin, Bacardi and Sailor Jerry Rum, Jose Cuervo and Altos Tequila; $4 draft beers (Bud Light, AmberBock and ShockTop) and $5 Goose Island IPA. Craft beers plus the shortest Guinness draft pour in town!
When he opened the original Shenanigans in August 1992, Patrick wanted to bring better options to the dark and smoky world of sports pubs. A lot has changed in the 30 years since, but Patrick’s passion for quality and hospitality hasn’t wavered. Burgers are still hand formed, made from fresh, not frozen, Angus beef. His plump chicken wings are always free of antibiotics and additives. And his fish is often straight off the boat, caught by friends and suppliers in local waters.
“Friends don’t let friends eat frozen fish,” Patrick says.
And there is still service with a smile from the crew working the kitchen, bar and dining room floor. Some things never change. New year, new groove, new memories – same old great Shenanigans experience!
▸ Shenanigans Sports Pub, 1300 S. Federal Highway in Dania Beach, is open 11:30 AM to 2 AM Daily, open until 4 AM on Friday & Saturday. Call 954-923-3008 for takeout & pickup.
The Hollywood Historical Society (HHS) has won an Emmy® award for its documentary film, The Grand Lady,” which tells the story of the venerable The Hollywood Beach Hotel, built in 1925 by Hollywood’s founder, Joseph W. Young, Jr. and one of the first great resorts in South Florida.
The film, made with filmmaker Pass Story of Diaspora Forward, Inc., had been broadcast by South Florida PBS in June, and then submitted for the 2022 National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Suncoast Regional Emmy® Awards. The win came in the category of Nostalgia/ Long Form Content.
“It was truly thrilling to be called on stage to represent us,” said HHS President Clive Taylor. “And right on the heels of the first-ever Haunted Halloween party at our Hammerstein House headquarters, which was an amazing success, it’s only made us more excited about all the things we have planned at the Hollywood Historical Society for 2023 and beyond.”
By Robin DrulardAmong the plans going forward are more holiday and seasonal events, and more films -- the next one, scheduled for release in a few months, will look at the history of Liberia, Hollywood’s unique African-American city originally planned and laid out by J. W. Young in 1923 -- plus new programs in educational outreach, museum-style exhibitions both at Hamm House and around the city, and small, in-house member gatherings. All of this is in addition to monthly walking tours and fascinating lectures, ongoing event attendance, bike tours, Hammerstein House tours, and more.

Hollywood City Manager Wazir Ishmael announced his intention to retire at the end of March. He has been City Manager since 2015 and has been instrumental in guiding some of the tremendous change over the past decade.
Dr. Wazir joined the City of Hollywood as Assistant City Manager for Sustainable Development in August 2014. Dr. Ishmael oversees a city government comprised of more than 1,589 full-time and part-time employees with a combined budget of nearly $755 million.
He has over thirty years of experience as a local government administrator, planner, educator, and international business executive with the City of Miramar; Broward County Planning Council; Clark County, Washington; Wigan County Council, Lancashire, United Kingdom; and PlanLogical Corporation. During his 16-year tenure with Miramar, he progressively held the positions of Planning Manager, Community Development Director, Assistant City Manager for Development Services, Deputy City Manager, and Interim City Manager.
The city grew substantially during Ismael’s leadership. Hollywood’s taxable value grew from $11 Billion in 2014 to its current amount in excess of $21 Billion. Over the same period, the General Fund reserves grew from $23 million to $41 million. Hollywood’s credit rating stabilized during his tenure. The city currently has an A rating with both Moody’s and Fitch.
In his resignation letter, Ishmael highlighted some of his accomplishments.
“We have been able to work collaboratively with our collective bargaining units resolving and reducing litigation and achieving several long-term labor contracts. This has allowed us to dramatically increase pension funding levels, significantly reduce other post-employment benefit liabilities, restore and enhance public safety positions, and raise the city’s salaries and benefits to competitive levels.” He wrote, “Together, we have achieved so much. I will forever be grateful for your support and the work of our superlative staff and their dedication, professionalism, skills, and passion.”
The city is actively searching for Ismael’s replacement, with both external and internal candidates being considered. City Manager, along with City Attorney and Community Redevelopment Agency Executive Director, is one of three positions appointed by and reporting directly to the City Commission.
hen hitting into a headwind, your shots carry shorter, fly higher and come down at a steeper landing angle due to the extra lift and drag the headwind causes. Under calm conditions, the air is moving into the ball at the same speed the ball is traveling.
When there is a tailwind, the wind speed subtracts from the airflow. When there is a headwind, the wind speed adds to the airflow. The greater the speed of the headwind, the more lift and drag is produced. The higher airflow into the ball causes more lift (what makes the ball rise) and more drag (what slows the ball down) causing the ball to balloon into the air. It’s a common misconception that the ball spins more when hit into the wind. It’s actually the added lift when hit into the airflow that gives this false impression. However, more spin is the enemy when hitting into the wind as more spin creates more lift and more drag and a resultant ballooning ball flight that winds up short of the target. Instead of swinging harder into the wind, usually resulting in more club head speed and more spin, use a club with less loft which will help you reduce the spin and optimize the flight of the ball into the wind.
The opposite is true with a tailwind. If you hit a shot with too little spin when downwind, the ball will drop out of the sky too soon and fall short of the target. Remember, a tailwind will produce shots that carry longer, fly lower and roll more
Wonce they land due to decrease amount of lift on the ball. Your best bet downwind is to launch the ball higher so that it will fly higher, carry longer and land more softly. The relationship between the lift and drag do not behave linearly, and that is why a headwind hurts more than a tailwind helps.
Now that you know how the relationship between headwinds and tailwinds affects the golf ball, here is a general tip for calculating how many yards to add or subtract on a given shot. Throw up a few pieces of grass and pay attention to how far away from you the grass lands. For a tailwind, add two yards of extra distance to how far your shot will go for each yard that the wind blows the grass toward the target. For a headwind, subtract four yards of carry for each yard the wind blows the grass away from the target. This general rule with help you estimate which club to use when playing into a headwind or when playing downwind.
Whenever I am on the course and feel a stiff wind in my face I automatically take two extra clubs. For example, from the 150 yard marker when it would be a 7 iron in distance, I would now select a 5 iron and make a nice easy smooth swing knowing that I have enough club selected and that my ball will bore through the heavy wind on target with just the right amount of distance.
The same goes for when I am faced with the same distance and I have 150 yards to the green and a strong gusty wind is at my back. I take a 9 iron to compensate for the wind and the ball has a much higher trajectory, whereas the wind carries it right on target with the proper amount of distance as well.
Hi everyone, this month I’m excited to share a list of the many capital improvement projects that are scheduled to break ground in our City this year.
• New Playgrounds are coming to the ArtsPark, the Lakes of Emerald Hills Park, Kooser Park, Stan Goldman Park, McNicol Community Center, and Driftwood Park.
• Also at Stan Goldman Park, a new Concrete Skate Board Park is coming to the newly named Justice Skate Park, along with 2 new Pickleball Courts, a new 10 foot wide pathway with pedestrian lighting and improvements to the Dog Park.
• Four new Pickleball Courts will be built at Jefferson Park.
• Artificial Turf Fields will be installed at Dowdy Field.
• Improvements to Hollywood Marina’s fueling station will be made, as we continue to seek funding for our newly adopted Marina Master Plan.
• New exercise equipment will be installed at Oakridge Park.
• Pathway renovations will take place at Joe DiMaggio, Zinkil, John Williams, and Mara Giulianti Park.
• New floating docks will be installed at Holland Park and the observation tower will be refurbished.
• New Bottle Filler Fountains will be installed at many of our parks and community centers.
• We’ll also be pursuing indoor pickleball for seniors and more teen programming and partnering with Memorial to provide aquatic exercise classes and games for seniors.
Driving down Sheridan Street, Hollywood Boulevard, Pembroke Road and Stirling Road, you can already see what a beautiful difference the new Florida-friendly landscaping has made, and I thank the team for their ongoing work on this.
On the beach, we’ll be renewing the Broadwalk kneewall’s LED lights with new watertight fixtures. We’ll complete the installation of vehicle access management gates for the Broadwalk. The undergrounding of the overhead utilities along A1A between Sheridan Street and Hollywood Boulevard will be substantially completed.
We’ll be starting a massive 4-year, $50 million project to underground utilities and rebuild and raise 18 of the side-streets that lead from A1A to the Broadwalk and beach between Harrison Street and Magnolia Terrace. This is a significant resiliency project as well as a major beautification project with streetscape improvement like the pavered side streets completed in previous phases on Central Beach.
We’re working to install new near-shore artificial mermaid coral reefs at four locations, two off of North Beach Park, one off of Keating Park and one off of Harry Berry Park.
Keating Park, which is just north of the Diplomat, will begin major renovations, and we’ll be beginning to improve the Broadwalk’s lighting to be even more sea turtle-friendly.
Downtown, our CRA team will be beginning to oversee a transformative streetscape project that will beautify the historic segment of Hollywood Boulevard with new and wider sidewalks, cafe space, trees and lighting on each side of the Boulevard.

Citywide, we’ll be completing designs for our neighborhood bicycle greenways, and designing phase 2 of our neighborhood traffic calming program.
The citywide roadway beautification project where we’ve already installed new landscaping and trees along 12 miles of our main corridors will be continued.
• The State Road 7 Mobility Hub and Linear Park
• Avant Garde Safe Routes to Schools Sidewalks
• The Surf Road and Balboa St Road Hardening Project
• The Fletcher Street Wall
• FDOT’s resurfacing of US-1
• The much-awaited irrigation and landscaping project for Hollywood Boulevard from City Hall to Dixie Highway.
All this - and more - will get underway this year! Big thanks to our teams. This has all been years in the making. Let’s get ready for some construction and beautification in Hollywood!
