May is ALS Awareness Month

MEET YOUR FUTURE Young Adult Scholarships For Career Opportunities

I

n May 2011, a father of three was playing basketball with his 14-yearold son. Each time he shot, the ball uncharacteristically fell short of the basket. After just a brief time on the court, the man was much more tired than normal. The following morning he noticed he had trouble buttoning his shirt before work. Over the next month, the father of three saw other strange symptoms; he was much more tired than usual, his joints were sore, and his hand-eye coordination was

progressively getting worse. Two months after that father-son basketball game, Michael Jaillet was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. He progressively lost control of his muscular system until passing away on December 14, 2014. He was 45 years old. May is ALS-Awareness month. Each year 5,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with the disease. The horror of slowly losing control of your body as your mind stays sharp is something no one should endure. There is still no cure and few treatments. Many of us remember the Ice Bucket Challenge in 2014. The viral campaign raised millions of dollars to support the victims of ALS and to fund research. Unfortunately, the need for funding continues today. If you have the means, please support ALS research by donating to the ALS Foundation at ALS.org. With your help, in the future children won’t have to watch their dad fade away. In memory of my brother, Michael. Sincerely,

Terry & Christy Jaillet OUR CITY MEDIA PUBLISHERS

Chen Senior Medical Opens its Newest Medical Center in Hollywood By Terry Jaillet

C

hen Senior Medical Center opened its newest location right here in Hollywood! The practice offers seniors a whole new way of accessing medical services and provides a superior level of care. Chen Senior Medical Center is a family-owned primary and specialty care practice committed to delivering superior healthcare to Medicare-eligible seniors. The practice is Chen Medical’s first in Hollywood and is accepting new patients. They offer quality, empathetic, well-coordinated care that detects issues before they become more serious. Dr. Jenling James Chen founded Chen Senior Medical after his own experience with a life-threatening illness. In 2003, Dr. Chen was diagnosed with cancer and given only two months to live. He and his family experienced firsthand what it was like to be on the receiving end of patient care, struggling to access quality medical care while fighting for his life. Dr. Chen recovered, defying his original diagnosis. And he knew he had to do something to help others in their time of need to overcome the frustrations he experienced with the existing fragmented and unsympathetic healthcare system. That’s why he founded Chen Senior Medical Center, to turn the healthcare system around and make it more focused, convenient, and effective for the people who need it most - seniors. We sat down with Medical Director Yahaida RimolaDeJesus and center director Matthew Kaminske to learn more.

What makes Chen Medical Center different?

Our nationally recognized value-based care has been proven to help keep people healthier and out of the hospital. Our doctors lead all your care with the support of an entire medical team, including high-quality specialists who work together to oversee your care. Because our doctors know you best, they

will help you find the best specialist. Our doctors work together with specialists to make more informed decisions about the care that is right for each patient’s needs. Many specialists are available right at the Chen Senior Medical Centers, so you don’t have to run all over town for your medical care. We also offer online video appointments and private door-to-door transportation for all patients.

Tell us about your team.

Our doctors intentionally see just 400 hundred patients. That is a fraction of the 2,300 to more than 3,000 patients that most doctors see. We never rush time with our patients. We get to know each of our patients and are able to listen. We serve you with kindness, dignity, and respect. The entire staff treats you like family - they take the time to get to know you and your health. You’ll even get your doctor’s cell phone number to use any time you need to. We offer walk-in, same-day, and virtual appointments, and we have on-site tests, screenings, and most medications. We’ll even arrange a ride to your appointment if you need one.

Sounds incredible! What do your patients have to say? Our patients are delighted with what we offer. In fact, more than 4 out of 5 patients would recommend us to family and friends.

Have you made any accommodations for COVID-19?

The pandemic has been a difficult time for everyone, and we wanted to make sure our patients remained safe and at home at the height of the pandemic. Once the vaccine became available, we began administering the vaccine and the booster to our patients. In addition, we educated them about safety practices, including

washing their hands, wearing masks, and maintaining an appropriate distance with family and friends. We practice ludicrous safety tactics daily to make sure patients feel safe and cared for, including offering virtual visits for patients, instituting patient love calls so our patients had enough medication, food, and personal items – in addition to helping to fight loneliness, and we committed to ludicrous safety at our medical centers.

What can patients expect when they visit your office?

Patients can expect to feel loved, appreciated, listened to, and respected by their doctors and medical center care team. In fact, nearly 95 percent of our patients say that their provider genuinely cares for them, according to a recent survey by third-party research firm Medallia. According to survey results, 96.7 percent feel respected by their doctor, and 93.3 percent of our patients feel genuine care and concern demonstrated by their doctor. In addition, 90.3 percent felt the same care and concern was demonstrated by the staff at Chen Senior Medical Centers. In 2021, Patients in Hollywood responded YES 98.6% that they were satisfied with their doctor – this was the best score in South Florida and 2nd out of over 100+ centers

inside the company.

Is there anything else you would like readers to know?

We make it so easy for seniors to meet our doctors, and we can provide round-trip transportation on request. Just give us a call and come meet one of us and our care teams. You will be glad you did!

Take a virtual tour of one of our centers to see what it’s like by visiting www.chenmedicalcenters.com.

INSPIRING INDIVIDUAL

Miramar Resident Receives Champion for Children Award

E

very year, The Children’s Trust awards the David Lawrence Jr. Champion for Children Award to an individual with a lifetime of notable achievement and dedication to children in South Florida. The 2022 recipient of this award truly epitomizes the spirit of this award and has spent his entire career dedicated to providing mentorship, opportunity, and guidance for children. This year’s recipient is Gale Nelson, President and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Miami. Gale was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, and moved to Toledo, Ohio when his parents divorced at age two. He credits his mother, who raised him and his brother as a single mom, as providing him with a solid groundwork for his entire life—instilling in him family values, the importance of hard work, and a sense of belonging. After receiving his bachelor’s degree in corporate finance, his life took another significant turn, one he likes to call the “Gale Force Wind” chapter (pun intended!) In the summer of 1991, he reconnected with his father and, after Hurricane Andrew hit, moved to South Florida to try to strengthen the relationship. His father was in construction and moved from California to Florida to help rebuild after Hurricane Andrew ravaged South Miami-Dade County. Through his father, he visited a 44.85-acre campus in Cutler Ridge called ICARE, the Interfaith Coalition for the Andrew Recovery Effort. The campus was later developed into BayPoint Schools for at-risk children through the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice. Gale felt a connection to helping the boys in the facility build better lives because he saw himself in them. He started at the campus in 1993 as a teacher and coach and worked his way up to Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President. The program began with 36 youth and grew to more than 200 youth and a $10 million budget under his tenure. After helping rehabilitate hundreds of youth at Baypoint, he realized that the true root of the issue was that these boys had to be arrested in order to get the structure, support, and mentoring they so desperately needed. In 2006, he joined Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami to try to help close the gap. Since joining BBBS 15 years ago, over 20,000 youth have been served, 95% of graduating Littles go to college, police and youth relationships have been strengthened increasing public safety, and career pathways have been created through workplace mentoring for over 15,000 students. Gale has developed multiple programs including “Bigs in Blue,” a mentorship program with police officers, and 20 / Our City Miramar / May 2022

a corporate mentoring program called “School to Work” where high school-aged students meet their mentors (‘bigs”) at the corporate location. Gale resides in Miramar with his wife of nearly 27 years. He has four children—three boys and one girl ranging in age from 15-23 years old. His greatest source of pride is being able to give his children a solid family unit with an active and present father; something he did not have growing up. Gale is a true example of how providing structure, love, and guidance to children can make all the difference in the world.

The initial release of the annual forecast was produced by Professor Michael M. Bell and Research Scientist Philip J. Klotzbach on April 7, 2022, and will be updated several times in the coming months. The pair issued a statement that read, in part, “Sea surface temperatures across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic are currently near average, while the Caribbean and subtropical Atlantic sea surface temperatures are warmer than normal. We anticipate an above-average probability for major hurricanes making landfall along the continental United States coastline and in the Caribbean.”

“Coastal residents are reminded that it The forecast predicts 19 named storms only takes one hurricane making landfall and nine hurricanes this year. HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS SECTION

Hurricane Season Begins June 1st

A

BE PREPARED!

tlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1 through November 30 each year. It is no secret to South Florida residents that hurricanes are dangerous and can cause major damage. Storm surge, wind damage, and flooding can wreak havoc on property and pose major threats to people and pets. According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the best way to minimize those risks is to be prepared.

Make an Emergency Plan

Make sure everyone in your household knows and understands your hurricane plans. Include the office, kids’ daycare, and anywhere else you frequent in your hurricane plans. Ensure your business has a continuity plan to continue operating when disaster strikes. Determine the best way to protect yourself,

family, and pets in the event of a major storm.

Recognize Warnings and Alerts

Stay informed during a hurricane threat by monitoring news channels, and paying attention to emergency information and alerts. Download the FEMA app to receive real-time alerts from the National Weather Service.

Keep and Protect Important Documents

Make sure your insurance policies and personal documents are up to date. It is a good idea to have both digital and physical copies of these important documents, especially if you need to evacuate.

Make a Hurricane Kit

One of the best ways to prepare for a potential storm is to prepare a hurricane kit. A basic emergency supply kit could include:

(3 Gallons Per Family Member) ▸ Water Food (3 Days Worth) ▸ Non-Perishable Cell Phone Charger ▸ Battery-Powered NOAA Weather Radio with Extra Batteries ▸ Flashlight ▸ First Aid Kitwith Extra Batteries ▸ Whistle ▸ Package of Surgical Masks ▸ (To Filter Out Contaminated Air) Sheeting & Duct Tape ▸ Plastic Towelettes ▸ Moist Bags ▸ Garbage medications & glasses ▸ Prescription food ▸ Pet ▸ Personal hygiene items

HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS

Five Things Every Homeowner Should Do BEFORE HURRICANE SEASON

H

urricane Season starts next month. This year’s season is expected to be “above average.”, Most South Floridians have experienced the rush to “get things done” when a major storm is on the way. There are a few things, however, that homeowners can do ahead of time to make that storm watch period a little bit less stressful.

1. Prune trees and clear yard debris

Hurricane-force winds can convert almost anything into a missile, capable of inflicting damage to homes, cars, and people. High winds can pick things like coconuts or dead branches and launch them at windows or people. It is a good idea to prune back dead branches and tree limbs that overhang homes. Dead and diseased plants should also be removed.

2. Repair windows, doors & roofing

BEST OF

PLANTATION 2022

In severe weather, your roof is your first line of defense, and a roof in need of repair is exposed to heavy winds. Examine the flashing for leaks and look for loose roof tiles that may be prone to wind and rain. Make sure it's ready to withstand severe winds and make any necessary repairs. The same goes for windows and doors.

4. Clean and inspect drains, downspouts & gutters

3. Have a plan to install hurricane shutters

5. Check Your Insurance Policies

Clogged or damaged gutters and downspouts are one of the most common sources of water damage to homes during a storm. Water that does not drain away from your home may flood it. Make sure they are secured in place and free of any debris.

Installing hurricane shutters prior to the arrival of a major storm can be a challenge. Contractors and handymen become booked around the clock during a hurricane warning. It is a good idea to prearrange the installation of hurricane shutters prior to a storm warning. If you plan to install them yourself, make sure you have the appropriate tools and ladders needed. Home improvement stores frequently sell out quickly!

Review your insurance documents to make sure you have the right amount and right types of coverage. Ask your insurance agent if your policy covers replacement costs or cash value. Also, if you are in a flood plain, make sure your flood insurance is up to date. A few, simple things, done before hurricane season will make it a breeze if a big storm comes!

Disney Sails into Port Everglades By Terry Jaillet

T

he Broward County Commission gave Disney Cruise Lines the go-ahead to set sail into Fort Lauderdale Harbor in early April. The Commission approved renovations that will turn Port Everglades’ Cruise Terminal 4 into Disney Cruise Line’s second home port. “Disney is known for its remarkable creativity worldwide. I’m sure this new terminal will reflect the magical Disney experience for travelers. We are certainly very happy and complimented that Disney Cruise Line will be sailing from our Port Everglades,” said Broward County Mayor Michael Udine. Improvements to Cruise Terminal 4 and the adjacent berth will begin once the interior and exterior designs are complete. The entire project must be completed by Fall of 2023 when Disney Cruise Line sails for the first time from Port Everglades. “Our Seaport Construction staff has been working closely with teams of Imagineers and other creative groups to brainstorm designs and ideas to maximize guest flow and efficiency. I am excited to see the final product,” said Port Everglades Chief Executive and Port Director Jonathan Daniels.

“We continue to make progress on our specially-designed Disney Cruise Line terminal, which will allow us to provide the outstanding experience our guests have come to expect from us, along with that special touch of Disney magic,” said Disney Cruise Line SVP and General Manager Sharon Siskie. The family-favorite cruise line is bringing its magic to Broward County’s cruise port under a 15-year partnership that includes one ship to be homeported in Port Everglades year-round beginning Fall 2023, joined by a second, seasonal ship in 2025.

High School Voter Drive

B

By Zach McDaniels

roward County Supervisor of Elections, Joe Scott, led a month-long voter registration drive at county high schools during April. Representatives from the Supervisor of Elections Office visited every high school in the county and met with students in their classrooms, encouraging them to register. Students were given paperwork and guidance on how to properly fill it out during history, government and civics classes. Many of the students were already registered via the state of Florida’s driver’s license voter registration program. However, others took advantage of the opportunity to participate in future elections. “No part of my job is more rewarding than helping young citizens vote for the first time,” said Scott in a video released on the Browardvotes.com, “Here in the state of Florida your sixteenth birthday is an

important milestone. I am not saying that because you can get your drivers’ license, I am saying that because you can register to vote.” Students who registered will not be able to vote till they reach 18 years old, but will automatically be added to the voter register if they participated in the drive. Many of the students received a keepsake water bottle emblazoned with the @browardvotes logo. “I was really excited. I can’t wait till I turn 18 to vote in my first election. Hashtag adulting!” said Stoneman Douglas junior Jo. “When you become an active voter, you will have an impact on who our government leaders are at every level, including city, county, state, and national governments,” commented Scott, “I’ll see you at the polls.”

THE DONOWAY CENTER Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation for Advanced and Oligo-Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer

If you are being treated for advanced or oligometastatic pancreatic cancer you may want to contact Dr. Robert Donoway at ATLAS ONCOLOGY in Hollywood, Florida. Dr Donoway is using multi-modality therapy combining Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation with chemo-immunoradio therapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients from around the world after they have stopped responding to standard of care therapy and have been left with few options for further treatment. With over 32 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in south Florida, Dr Donoway recognized that because of late diagnosis, up to 85% of patients treated for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis. This fact limited the benefit many patients might receive from pancreatic surgery, which is problematic as surgery has been long held to be the only reproduceable therapy for cure; whereas in reality surgery is currently more likely Palliative in almost 80% of the cases. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating NanoKnife surgery with chemotherapy and now supplemented with immunotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially when compared to chemotherapy alone. Dr Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex cases. During the past decade, patients from around the world have traveled to benefit from

this groundbreaking treatment by Dr Donoway, which is FDA approved. Dr Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, Breast, and sarcomas, using NanoKnife Surgery based on its FDA approved guidelines. Patients experience a brief recovery, which means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating Pancreatic Ca. The treatment history been largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 10% five year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein‘s definition of insanity.” Dr Donoway is involved in ongoing research in identifying the best chemo-immuno therapy and sequencing to be used along with Pancreatic nanoKnife/IRE . Dr Donoway states, “the results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over nine years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have lived a little over a year, and so this technique opens a whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” Dr Donoway has presented his results of pancreatic ablation at the recent annual meeting of the American Pancreatic Association. By Senate Democratic Leader Lauren Book

his past January, I packed up my 5-yearold twins and headed to Tallahassee for the 2022 legislative session to be a voice for Broward County. For those of you I have not had the pleasure to meet, I am Lauren Book, your State Senator and the Senate’s Democratic Leader. As a working mom, fighting for Broward families is one of my top priorities. This year, I was able to pass meaningful legislation to benefit families in our local community and across the state, including two long-standing priorities I’ve held since first being elected to the Senate in 2016 while pregnant: a sales tax exemption on diapers that will save families hundreds of dollars a year, and expanding Medicaid to cover prescribed breast milk for medically at-risk babies. In addition, I passed legislation to combat digital sex crimes – making sure the law has caught up with technology, our use of cell phones, and the Internet.

Budget Victories for Miramar

This year, I fought to bring home more than 24 million in taxpayers’ dollars to be reinvested back into Broward County. These funds will go towards hardening our infrastructure against storms and climate change and expanding healthcare initiatives for vulnerable populations. For the fourth year, my office will bring home nearly $600,000 to the David Posnack Jewish Community Center in Davie for seniors to receive kosher meals. We also secured over $355,000 for the Country Estates community in Southwest Ranches to maintain its clean water and to clear roads of flooding so that emergency vehicles can safely pass through. These dollars have been included in the 2022 Florida Budget and presented to the Governor for approval. Despite legislative leadership’s continued focus on passing controversial “culture war” bills that garnered national attention this year, my focus remains squarely on addressing critical issues facing Floridians. I was proud to lead the Senate Democrats in a bipartisan call for a Special Session to address the current property insurance crisis, which needs immediate attention to protect Floridians’ property and their pocketbooks.
